The Hulk. The Abomination. The Leader. The Harpy. Doc Samson. Born of gamma radiation, they represented a new chapter of humanity. Now, spawned through their respective DNA has come the next generation... the Gamma Corps. Recruited and trained by the enigmatic General Ryker, their mission is a simple one - to kill the Incredible Hulk. And considering he's facing 5-1 odds, is that a mission even this new and improved version of the Green Goliath can prevent? Collects World War Hulk: Gamma Corps #1-4.
Of all the pointless tie-ins with World War Hulk this has to be the worst. Or at least tied with Heroes For Hire. As if there weren't already enough parties involved with a pretty simple conflict, Marvel had to go out and invent an entirely new one. Who are these people? Why should we care? Issue #2 makes an admirable attempt at humanizing these strangers, and a supergroup consisting of the Hulk's victims is an interesting idea. Sadly whatever moral dilemmas could be wrung from such a premise are thrown out the window in the final chapter, making me go back to asking why any of this should matter to anybody.
Still not sure why I bothered to pick this up. A couple of clever twists in the first chapter don't pay off in the long haul, as characters go about violence without consequence and trauma without real ramifications.
It looks like a lot of people didn't care for this one, but it was much better than I expected. A group of people who have lost family members in the Hulk's past rampages have been given Gamma based powers and placed in a team to get revenge on the Hulk. However, things aren't always what they seem.
The art wasn't my favorite, but I thought the story was good. I will say this probably would have worked better as a stand alone story rather than as part of World War Hulk, but I still enjoyed it.
Why Marvel would set up ANOTHER team of nobodies in an already overpopulated with superheroes and villains universe, I have no idea. There were some decent redemptive arcs plotted out for each of the Gamma Corps members, but of course we knew all along they wouldn't really do anything significant because this is just a tie-in outside of the main World War Hulk books. This book was all set up for the team using WWH as a platform for launch.
As it happens, it is not a very interesting team, and I am glad to be rid of them for now.
I liked the artist in this one, But I didn't enjoy the end with the old 'We are fighting the Hulk and in the last 5 panels have a life altering change of mind and now fight with the Hulk'. So it was less about Hulk than I'd like. At least he was mad and got to smash things.
