It’s senior year and all Adelynn wants is to feel normal after her assault. One day, she uncovers the secret of who she truly is. She is presented with two living a normal life, or attending Linden Academy, a school for the magically gifted in an unknown realm.
Normalcy is hard to obtain at Linden when she is surrounded by royalty and advanced gifted students, and she has not shown any of her own gifts yet. But Adelynn won’t let anyone doubt her, and she is determined to prove everyone--including herself--that she is capable.
When a fellow classmate pushes her to explore the darker side of herself, using her doubt against her, will Adelynn go too far to the point of no return?
A new adult fantasy featuring a strong female lead, elemental magic powers, and a magical academy, Justice in Magic is the first book in the Chronicles of Evvalor series.
This book contains potential triggers related to sexual assault, mental health issues, and adult content.
Vera Kane loves to build fantasy worlds, write love stories, and send her characters on great adventures. When she’s not writing, you can find her either reading a book or spending time with her family. She enjoys being a wife, a child of God, and a mama to her daughter and two fur babies. She currently lives with her husband and child in Southern Ohio.
As always, I didn't know what I was getting myself into because I never read blurbs. But this book was a pleasant surprise. Not going to talk much about the story because the book isn't released yet but if you're looking forward to binge read a new series by a debut author, I assure this won't disappoint. Comes out towards the end of this month.
The character development is commendable and I loved the main character, Adelynn. She had to make some difficult choices but I can say she made the right ones. All the characters are realistic so full marks to that. I loved the world building too. Lots and lots of magic. And a big yes to the found family trope. If your book has it, I will read it. I enjoyed how books, movies and sitcoms were mentioned in the story. The book ended on a huge cliffhanger and I want the next book right away. Why so many secrets, huh?
This was a quick read. Brilliant debut. Definitely recommended.
I’m so proud of this book. Going back and reading it, and feeling such a deep love for this book and the characters that I’ve written. I cannot wait to share Evvalor with you guys, and I cannot wait for you guys to meet the band of royal misfits 🫶🏼
I had a hard time deciding how to rate this one. On the one hand it's fun and an interesting read. On the other is marketed as an adult urban/paranormal fantasy, which I don't feel it is. This reads more like a YA Fantasy to me, so that threw me for a loop as I wasn't expecting that.
That being said, I enjoy YA Fantasy, so after I changed my thinking on the style of writing, it flowed better for me. This was a solid fantasy read for me and had some Harry Potter nostalgia going on. What I appreciate is that while it may have some HP vibes, it is different enough to be enjoyable and stand on its own.
For those who enjoy YA Fantasy with an academia setting, I would say grab this and give it a read. It's fun and definitely worth picking up.
I sincerely appreciate the author and The Book Scenes Tours for providing a review copy. While a review wasn't expected, I have offered my opinion and these are my own thoughts.
I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review. I’d like to start by saying that this is Ky Venn’s debut novel! It took me a while to actually get into the story and writing style but once I did I enjoyed it. The cliffhanger tho- can’t wait for the second book!
The book got an updated version and it’s even better now! Love the cover and the story and can’t wait to see how it continues
Wow🤯 This book totally had a Zodiac Academy vibe! I was definitely enthralled the entire time while reading 📖 it. Addie’s magical journey throughout Evvalor, and while attending Linden Academy was nonstop action.
**spoilers below people, so if ya don’t wanna know, don’t read🤷🏻♀️**
I was super impressed by Ky’s world building, although I was perplexed with the two completely different male characters Addie was basically torn between. I loved Kyde, and he was just so damned sexy 24/7 but my fav is definitely Ezra. And OMG that ending?! Whyyy did her twin just show up out of like nowhere,😳🤯and is she like super evil 😈 being the fact that she’s got her parents tied up waiting for her return to the earth realm?!🤔 (I’m so freakin glad Ezra is there with her tho.) I have so many questions! Aahhh Ky’s second book can’t get here fast enough for me y’all! I cannot wait until it’s released in September!📚🙌🏼❤️
This book was such a fun read! I don’t want to give too much away because it hasn’t been released yet (it comes out next week!!!!) but I am SO grateful to have received an ARC for this (my very first one!). The world building was really interesting, I thought it was very well done and Addie’s character was very relatable. I also loved the butterfly significance :,), it was so beautiful. If you’re a fan of N/A fantasy, magic schools, and strong female main characters, you will LOVE this book. But the cliffhanger ending??? Literally had my jaw on the floor for at least a full minute. I cannot WAIT for book two. Amazing debut (:
I received this book as an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review.
To be completely honest I almost DNF'd this book, the main reason I finished it was because there were some interesting concepts and ideas for the world that this book is in, but the follow through was not there for me.
This book follows a girl who has recently graduated from high school, then finds out that she has magic powers. Her "friends" are people who are from a different realm and have been keeping an eye on her until she figures out that she isn't normal. The concept is very much Harry Potter or Zodiac Academy which I love, it is my perfect cup of tea, but it was not elaborated on enough for me. I feel like the author scratched the surface on a lot of the character building and the relationships between the characters in the story.
It is a YA book, upper age range, due to some more specifically explained sex scenes, but it is not explicit. I really wanted to love this book because it has everything that I enjoy in a book. Enemies to lovers, "You're a wizard Harry", magic, evil, traumatic childhood (normally a good character arc), but I just needed more from the story itself. I would love to see the author grow as a writer and maybe read another story in the future.
4/5: i loved the world building of this fantasy novel. it definitely felt like a first year college/university coming of age story. the first parts were mostly made up of the senior year and start of this new magical school. i signed up for the ARC because it was a harry potter x winx club and i love both and it was 100% that! you get the magical school, training, ‘you have powers’ trope & the magic was similar to the winx so it was easy to keep up with. in harry potter, i always loved the idea of taking a magical creature class with Hagrid and i LOVED learning about the mythical creatures in this book! GIVE ME MORE OF THIS!! the found family was perfect, especially in the end. i wish it was more plot driven but this was a fantastic start of a series. addie was relatable, and i’m glad her healing from her trauma wasn’t what made her, her. she was relatable for me in many ways. the love interests were hard to keep up with in the start but easier for me once i got deeper into the story; but i have a feeling it’s going to be a love triangle/two love interests and i’m 100% rooting for Erza.
* edited because i misspelled mc name 🫣. i did like how unique the fantasy names were! spice level: 🌶️
This is the debut novel for Ky Venn and it did not disappoint! If you love the academic vibe filled with strange creatures, a magical realm and deception you will love this book!
I had so much fun reading this book. As I said it is filled with magic and the system it is built around was fun to read and learn about. The world that the book is centered around is complex and super original. I love any book that has an academic side to it and this one gave me Harry Potter feelings and that is a good thing. The friends and family that are in this story are wonderful and the relationships are fun to get to know and I bet we find out some secrets in the next book.. I truly loved everything about this story and recommend to anyone who loves secrets, magic, and family. I got sucked in and read this in one day. The only thing I wish it had more of was additional detail about the friends backgrounds and the world itself. I know its hard to put everything in one book so I am hoping to see more information in the second book. This one leaves on a doozy of a cliffhanger but it allows me to look forward to the next one. I give this story 4.5 stars but have rounded up.
This was an interesting read but the beginning seems crammed with information that gets lost later on in the story. The main character "Addie" has strange mood swings that don't make sense, she seems like a level headed person who avoids conflict to suddenly blowing up in anger then goes back to being level headed and accepting. You get introduced to characters in a way that feels rushed and not entirely thought through. Mostly Silas the boyfriend, who is introduced as the caring, loving and thoughtful boyfriend who suddenly drops her like a hot rock the moment something strange happens in her life. I understand that it was important to the story line but the breakup could have been done a lot better. All things considered, it's definitely worth reading but it takes a bit to get to the good part.
this book is quite the roller coaster, starting out with a bit of a slow pace filled with world and plot building. but once it takes off, it's a wild ride! and then just when you think things are settling down, she hits you with that LAST LINE OF THE ENTIRE BOOK???
this book is truly so fun. the characters are so solid as they are, but the potential of where they may go is astronomical. I absolutely can't wait to see the payoff of some of the things that were set up in this book.
I loved the academy vibes & the found family within these pages. I love the growth of our FMC. & I absolutely can't wait to see how far she goes!
&& pls...are we just NOT going to talk about EZRA?
The revamping of Justice in Magic really did the story and the characters justice this time around. They had better growth and better character arcs. Any lingering questions I had about development or why they did something was wrapped up and this time the only questions I had were what happens next?? I loved the parts of the story that stayed the same, but the changes and additions were perfect and not that obvious. The beginning does help to build the backstory and world building quicker than last time, and once Addie reaches Linden its full steam ahead.
this book such a fun read!! i loved all of the references to different shows/books/movies
the characters are well written and they’re all loved when they’re supposed to be loved and hated when they’re supposed to be hated. the relationships between characters are also written beautifully and soo great to read about!!
i loved seeing the main character, Addie, grow into her new life and how she dealt with everything.
the ending had me SHOOKETH!! i want the next book already🧍🏻♀️
I won't lie, I had a hard time getting into this book at first, BUT it turned out really interesting. It is a slow burn. There are plenty of magical aspects that I loved. The realms sound so beautiful, wish I could actually visit them. I would say this is more a YA book. The characters go from HS to college. Think Harry Potter meets Narnia. Also that ending was such a tease!!!!! Now I have to read the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed this young adult fantasy romance with an academia setting by Ky Venn. Adelynn is an amazing main character and her character development throughout the book is realistic. He character is strong and had to make a few difficult choices. I really liked the style of writing and it flowed well. I really liked this fictional world. It gave me Harry Potter vibes and it felt nostalgic. I can’t wait for book 2 especially after that cliffhanger!
I enjoyed this book very much. I am excited about the new revised edition. It has a new cover, just as beautiful as this one. I just got the ARC for the 2nd edition, and I will review that one. 📚🪱❤️
This book started off a little slow with the world building & info dumps, but once you get going this book gets SO good. Ezra my bb plz dont die in the later books I’ll cry 😭😭😭 I’m excited for the rest of the series to continue.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Some Harry Potter vibes, but it’s definitely it’s own, magical world! I loved the main character Addie and how easy it was to relate to her. I also enjoyed her interactions with all the other characters. And there’s a little bit of spice! Huge cliffhanger at the end - can’t wait for book 2 in the Chronicles of Evvalor Series!
Thank you to Ky Venn & The Book Scenes Tours for the advanced copy of this book!
I learned my lesson in the beginning of my book blogging career. Never request a review copy you're not that interested in. Nowadays I check blurbs, check genres and determine if I would have also gotten the book if I would have had to pay for it. That's usually a great system. I rarely request review copies of books that eventually disappoint me. But once in a while a book sounds awesome and seems cater all my wants and then turns out to be not for me.
It's hard to write my review for this book, because I quite clearly saw all the potential. There is an amazing world that's just begging to be explored. There are some amazing characters who I'd love to get to know better. And once in a while there are glimpses of a bigger storyline filled with mysteries and discoveries. But despite the book having potential, I never really cared about the book or the characters in this story. I never felt any connection with them.
I think part of the problem is the pacing and how detailed situations, meetings and characters are described. Some things are described vividly and take a lot of time. Other times weeks pass by in three single sentences. That doesn't have to be a problem, but I somehow had the feeling that the more detailed scenes were mostly in the beginning of the book, which was very much the introduction. Where the scenes that I would have wanted to feel and experience were passing by in a blink.
The other issue I had with the book is that it feels like the book is missing a certain punch line. I understand that in our lives loads of things happen without a reason, but when everything in a book happens without a reason, when we learn nothing of motivations or thoughts behind decisions it feels like the story lacks direction. I think the direction is probably there and might be revealed in future books, I just think this book ALSO needed a clearer direction already for the reader.
I think the biggest issue though is that we are told about the characters in this story, but are never given the chance to actually get to know them. The author describes what's happening, but we simply read that our character feels a connection with other characters, but we're not really shown those. Especially the romance doesn't get enough attention. We get no chance to build a connection with the love interest, to understand what makes him so unique, to fall a little in love with him too.
And last but not least: For New Adult the heroine sounded a little young and especially with her history I would have expected her to be less naive. The writing style also seemed a little simple in general. If those few smut scenes hadn't been in the book, this could have been a YA aimed at 14 year olds. (Which is NOT bad perse. Just not what I personally expected.)
This book I debated what to say for a review for a long time. I even reached out to the author as I felt so conflicted about this review. I’d give this book 3.5 stars mostly based on the interesting fantasy world presented & the hope that as the series goes on it’ll capitalize on that potential.
I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book with its potential and the end product having such contrast. I feel like this book struggled to find its identity, it sometimes felt like it was a Disney story trying to play dress up like it was HBO. The main character Addie is presented as a girl getting ready for college. I’m not a teenage girl but I found her coming off much younger. I consulted with some younger friends, and they all seemed to agree. The first 25% of the book introduces us to her daily life and seldomly gets out of the main characters own thoughts. It’s good to set up details about our leading character but I felt this intro could’ve been much shorter & it added very little to the overall story. Much to my surprise many things established in the early part of the book seemed totally abandoned throughout the story.
Addie is a leading character I find myself not relating to and often find her unlikeable. I’m hoping as the series goes on some of her actions can be explained better, but it was hard to really get into the story that's heavily from her POV & she doesn’t come off as someone I want to root for. I can’t explain too much without giving away major story points, but I find her to obsess over things only to a minute later completely abandoned her feelings to go in an opposite direction. I hope future books can help clarify these matters.
The book provides an amazing fantasy world full of bright colors, interesting animals, & tasty foods. I think it has the potential to make for a wonderful fantasy realm that people would love to visit in their imaginations. I really look forward to this world being delved into during the series. It took too long to get into this world & many aspects of it are left to be exploded.
This book provides an exciting new fantasy world, a large cast unique of characters left to be defined further in the series, some romance & spice for those interested in that, & an interesting story of family & friendship presented in a coming-of-age tale. Much of the actions & emotions need more clarity but I’m willing to give the author the benefit of the doubt that when her full vision is completed, she’ll be able to deliver an exciting adventure into a new realm.
Adelynn has had a rough couple years. She is excited as senior year comes to an end and she will spend the summer with her boyfriend and friends, then enter college in the fall. However when her nightmares become too much to bear, a secret is revealed. When Addie discovers her parents and best friends have been lying to her their entire lives, she is unsure what to do. She has magical water powers and an opportunity to travel to another realm to attend a magical college to learn to use her powers. When she makes the choice to leave the human realm behind everything changes. She's suddenly experiencing things she never thought possible and most importantly she's on a journey to discover the truth about who she is.
Justice In Magic is a fun and exciting read. The world building is amazing. Venn creates magical realms filled with otherworldly creatures, enchanting lands, and vibrant characters. The characters are interesting and reminiscent of students that have their whole lives ahead of them. There is humorous banter among the students as they get to know one another. However things take a turn when Addie meets someone who encourages her to explore her dark side.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars. I found the book to be enjoyable. The world building and magic are detailed and interesting. It wasn interesting to join Addie along with her discoveries of her new world and powers. The story did have a bit of a slow start and pace. At times it felt like it was a bit much and I just wanted to get to the real story. I think this story is more appropriate for Young Adults as they may enjoy the banter and slow pace as she begins school more. I am curious to read book 2 as I hope the pace picks up. If you enjoy stories of college age magical characters living in an enchanting world with amazing creatures this book is for you.
"Justice in Magic" by Ky Venn is like a magnet that pulls you into a world where magic meets justice, and let me tell you, I couldn't put it down from the moment I started. It's that kind of book where you're sneaking in just one more chapter at 2 AM, promising yourself you'll stop, but you can't.
The characters? They're alive and kicking! Addie, the main character, is dealing with her own struggles that hit you right in the gut. Her journey reflects the big questions about right and wrong that the whole story is wrestling with. It's like they're real people and you're in it with them.
What's really something is how Venn blends this fantasy world with deep moral stuff. It's like they took magic and morality and mixed them up in a way that sticks with you. As someone who's seen my share of real-life moral messes, I was nodding along. The themes of power, responsibility, and consequences give this whole thing an extra layer of meaning. It's not just entertainment; it's a conversation starter that lingers long after you're done.
The pacing is spot on. There's action that makes your heart race, and then these quiet moments that let you connect with the characters. Speaking of characters, Addie is someone you can really root for, and there's this other dude whose story I'm dying to unravel. There's foreshadowing galore, and a slow-burning relationship that's driving me wild with curiosity.
To sum it all up, "Justice in Magic" is like blending fantasy and philosophy in a way that's pure magic. I loved how unpredictable it was. The characters are unforgettable, the themes make you think, and the whole thing is put together so darn well. If you're into stories that mess with your head and light up your imagination, grab this book. And can we talk about that cliffhanger? Book two can't drop soon enough! 🙌🔮

♥︎ I wanna thank Ky Venn for letting me read this ARC ! This is of course my own opinion and my own review !
♡𝅼 Alright ! Firstly, let's mention this is Ky Venn's debut novel ! And what a debut !! This was amazing ! If you love the academic scene of Harry Potter and the powers of The Winx then this is your next read ! This book reunites all the good things from both universes !
✦ The elemental powers are always fun to see in a fantasy novel and I feel like we don't see enough MC starting with the "weak" power, won't say which one because I don't want to ruin it for people, but it's really refreshing ! You get, of course, the friend group, each of them having a unique power and forming a little band. And as always we have the bad boy which we all learned to love and this one is no exception !
★ I also really enjoyed having most of the plot consisting of an internal moral battle from the MC, there wasn't much action in reality, but it was never boring because the female lead really seems human and has the same reactions we all would have, unlike some leads where you ask yourself "who would do that ?!" Addie is super relatable and all her friends have unique persona. You'll find someone to like, I guaranty it !
♡𝅼 I had some trouble with some parts with the writing style, but that's on me, and it's really personal because otherwise everything else is amazing, I read it in a couple of days and couldn't put it down ! I really recommence Justice in Magic if you want a chill fantasy novel to enjoy!
Thanks for reading ! - Your Friendly Goblin✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧
The book follows Adelynn who feels like she has life all figured out after she graduates high school. However during a lake trip with friends after she graduates she ends up having to make a choice.
She either continues the path she is on or attend Linden Academy to explore her new powers she just learned about.
Linden challenges her friendships, her relationships, and herself. She is has to struggle with insecurities and learning something she never knew existed.
There are some trigger warnings of sexual assault, consent, mental health and more. With this being said the start of the book reads more as upper YA and then as it progresses it is navigates to the lower end of New Adult. This is perfect for me as this what I like!
I don’t want to forget to mention the tropes 💫Magic 💫Academy 💫Great FMC 💫Found Family 💫Friendship 💫Royalty
“You’re in charge of waking up the beast”
You would think that quote would have come from someone snippy but it was banter with friends. The friendships in this book are amazing. It really keeps you going. They felt completely relatable.
“I’m not a hero in your story, babe. I’m the villain”
The love interests pulls you in all around. I felt like was rooting for a couple of them. However I am really prone to the one with a certain tattoo (trying for no spoilers).
Things I am hoping for in book 2. More detail around the classes More exploration of the magical realm More surprise powers?!?!? 😬 Oh and answers to the CLIFFHANGER!!!!!!
So I guess I just want more 😍
Thank you so much for this ARC I really enjoyed it.
I received an ARC copy of this book and honestly had no idea what I was in for when I started. I love stories with magical school settings and was super excited to dive right into this. From page one I was hooked and could not put it down. The characters are extremely relatable and had really amazing development throughout. I do not want to spoil any plot points so I will not speak on specifics but the story itself unfolded beautifully. It was written brilliantly and you can tell the author, Ky, put so much passion and hard work behind this masterpiece. I could literally go on for days with a million reasons why you should read this. However I will just say this….READ THIS BOOK! Trust me you will not be sorry. I have found my new favorite series and I cannot wait for more to come in the future.
I absolutely fell in love with this book and it’s characters!! I have been in a bit of a reading slump and when I was accepted to read an early release of this book I was ecstatic!! This book got me hooked immediately and I had a hard time setting it down.
If I could give this book 20 stars I would!! If your looking for your next read filled with magic, adventure, romance, and friendships this book is for you. I am so excited for the next book this is definitely my favourite series of the year!! That’s right the year!!
Even though I got this as an electronic early copy I’m gonna preorder the paperback right now I’m so in love with it
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book is the debut novel from Ky Venn, and it absolutely comes highly recommended.
The found family trope is one of my all-time favourites, and it’s done so well here. All the characters are very realistic, and the character development we see from Adelynn is highly commendable. The world-building is great, there isn’t an overload of information to get through (which can sometimes ruin an otherwise good book), and I cannot wait to read the sequel after that cliffhanger!
This book, personally, gives me a lot of Harry Potter vibes, which I love.
I cannot say this enough I loved this book! It’s a mix of Harry Potter and Winx Club and I’m absolutely obsessed!💙🤍
I’m always up for a book filled with magic so this was right up my alley. The characters are awesome and so well written. The plot was also laid out beautifully.
AND I MEAN THE CLIFFHANGER ARE YOU KIDDING!!!
I will admit the preface and the start of the book took me a while to get into although I think that’s because I’ve been on such a book slump but by Chapter 8 I was done for!!
I need book 2 ASAP!! I also need to add this to my bookshelf so I will be ordering the paperback. All I can say is READ THIS BOOK!
For a debut novel this was so interesting to read! The author has good character development through out and the magical world created in her mind was amazing to see it all unfold. The beginning leading up to the magic was slow, however I feel like it was important for the MC development. I loved the ending and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series as it comes out because I’m left with so many questions! I also wish it was written in first person POV instead of third so we could see more the action through the MC’s eyes and not descriptions of what is happening. Overall I enjoyed diving into this magical realm and can’t wait for the rest of the series!
I was hooked from the beginning and the ending took a very unexpected turn that had me saying “whoa! I was not expecting that!!” I would rate this book a 3.5 and the only reason why I didn’t give it a 4 is because I felt like some of information was repetitive in a way. I also wish we got a little more from Ezra at the end. I feel like majority of women can relate to what Addie experiences with her self esteem and loving someone so much that you end up changing who you are for them without realizing it. Overall, this is a good book and I’m looking forward to the second book and where Addie’s journey will take her next.
