3.5 rounded up.
This book is probably my least favourite in the series so far, though I still enjoyed it. I feel like this book focused a lot on giving more information to help wafers understand events that are likely going to take place in the last few books. Due to this, there wasn't a lot of action or adventure taking place, which was a little bit of a let down. However, it was nice to learn some additional background information on the magic systems, as well as some key characters. We did also get a lot more Jessica and David time that we have the fast few books, which is always a bonus!
One thing that is starting to become more evident as the series goes on is the political ideology within the story, as it does discuss events happening in the real world, though not always by the specific name. For example, they talk about a pandemic that led to knockdowns in 2020, but never actually says COVID-19. While I don't feel like this harms the story or adds any harmful narratives, it is there slightly. It's by means overpowering or even the main focus of the book, but it is there underlying things at times. There is also a fair bit of conspiracy theories at play, but again, I don't think they harm the story in any way.
One thing I really enjoyed about this installment is the massive cliffhanger it ended on! Right after the twist was mentioned, my mouth was hanging open, I was so surprised. Thankfully I was doing a long drive and was able to start book 7 immediately.

I do like the magic/energetic story at play, though I have a few gripes...
1. Every character has the same voice. My dads voice is different than mine, which is different than my kids. Even the gargoyle character has the same voice as a Scottish witch and as a Boston witch.
2. Other than a single sláinte, and a single Ach there is nothing to make me feel the characters are actually in Scotland

Compelling Saga
This book draws you into a magical world that is recognisable to me. It's not the far off lands of fae or mythical creatures. It's Edinburgh and Glasgow and set in the current time. The characters are well written and you feel like you know them as you read the series. I can't wait for more.

I like the story. I'm not a fan of the writing though. In this book, I'm reading about the past with David's parents and then leaving him with Aunt Gen. All of a sudden, without a page break or next chapter, without warning, were on to Gen and Jonathan talking in the present. It really confused me for a second. I have seen a few grammatical errors, and again, the overusage of the words 'just now'. Just now, which happened even twice in one sentence is really bothering me. I had to do a word search to see how often it's used and it's over 30 times in such a short book. There isn't much Scottish lingo at all and every character sounds the same to me.
How did it take so long for anyone to question who Terrance was? He is a wee beastie from the underworld who is looking out for David. With a beak and claws and wings and is quite small. No one thought to question that? And from the underworld? There is nothing else in the books even mentioning anything about the underworld. And everyone is just like, okay, cool. And then he lets them know he's actually a monk from the 7th plane.
I do hope the rest of the books will be better. Not much has really happened this far but then again they are short novels. Like I said, I really do like the story and it's concept!

New Twists and Lingering Frustration
Book Six continues the wild ride of Steven Aitchison’s The Witches of Scotland series, but once again, much of my frustration circles back to Jessica. David shoulders the work and pain of the trials to get into the Academy, yet Jessica will reap the benefits without the same amount of work or sacrifice. Her continued tiny minuscule increments of growth make her an insufferable presence in an otherwise engaging series.
Even when she gets the incredible opportunity to be tested for the magic academy and witness David bond with a crystal, she undercuts the moment with fear, resistance, and disruptive behavior. Instead of surrendering to the waves of contentment, she resists, dramatizes, and turns it into another one of her hysterical scenes. For a character I want to like and admire in many ways, she continues to miss chances to show maturity and depth.
“But where do the ideas come from to make these innovations happen? Sometimes it seems like they happen been overnight…”
Jessica does finally show the smallest glimmer of growth by appreciating her father’s help, instead of throwing another tantrum about doing everything on her own. *insert eye roll* Still, her arc feels like one step forward, ten steps back.
On the broader stage, the story remains enthralling. Alicia’s motives remain unclear, and now we’re introduced to her sister, Anna, adding even more complexity to the tangled alliances. The mystery of magic, shifting loyalties, and hidden manipulations kept me turning the pages. But David felt underutilized in this book, and there wasn’t nearly enough Terence and David, their Bromance is always a fan favorite.
Overall, Book Six is messy but captivating. The twists are there, the world keeps growing, and the threads of mystery keep me hooked. But the character arc for Jessica, continues to weigh down an otherwise strong fantasy series.

Dogs? Betraying friends and country and all witches and the world for dogs? This is just so unbelievably stupid. Thanks for fat shaming a female character too. Super cool.
The writing is just bad. Here is just one example:
“The shadows turned into a man and woman. As they became clearer Jessica didn’t know them, or at least it didn’t click who they were.
Then it clicked…”
Going from it didn’t click to it clicked in the space of a few words is simply awful. These characters have no depth.
One character is blackmailed into helping the villain. She does what the villain says but then immediately changes her mind and tells the good guys what she did. There is no suspense or anticipation because she just tells everyone everything on the next page.
Every MC constantly yells “fuck” out of frustration. I don’t have any issues with this type of language but the constancy of this one and only interjection is tiresome and shows a huge lack of creativity.
I honestly don’t even know if I can finish the series. It’s just so bad.

Still trying to d code of this is worth finishing. I want to know what will happen (doesn’t everyone want to know the ending). This is clearly a fictional book. I absolutely despise that the authors realistic point of view keeps appearing within these books. My only other critique is the narrator. Even as a young child reading I would give each character a different voice. This is very difficult to listen to because the entire book is just read. There just needs to be something different.

This series was gifted to me, so I feel obligated to read them. Disapointment overall in book 1-6 so far. Other than listing off the cities the Witches live in, there's zero authentication that speaks to being in Scotland. The main characters are constantly "drinking coffee" even after just having drunk cup after cup. Author needs to widen his view, having his characters more active. I really get the impression this series is self published. Just my opinion.

I am anxious to get through this series now. It is intriguing even while it is over the top in its politicizing, and I really want to see how good is going to triumph. I will echo other reviewers in saying that this is not great writing and does need some editing, and the author needs to take care with his use of the word "just", but it is still an interesting story. Warning: do not read this series thinking that you will get any sense of Scotland, it could be taking place anywhere.

Deeper.
This one has more a political bent than the previous five, but it’s a necessary component. It’s not preachy, but it’s there. There are a couple of slow sections in this one, but the story is definitely getting more interesting. Couple of nice twists that are pretty effective. Moving on to book 7 asap.

I have really enjoyed all 6 books i have read so far and would really recommend. I was glad that 7 books had been released at the time i started reading because i would of hated to wait, i was glued to them and just wanted to keep reading lol, 6 books read now on to the 7th and preordered the 8th, can't wait

This is the 6th installment and I am enjoying the series a lot but of repetition and a lot of saying something about nothing. We get it, Alicia wants to destroy the Akashic records, she's powerful, she's rich. David knows nothing about magic, yet he's somehow going to save the world in two more books...two more short books.

Fantastic
This just keeps getting better!! I’m not normally one to read a series - I’m like the one and done where each character has their own book. But I will say this writer has kept me engaged and the characters are so complex and compelling I can hardly wait for the next read!

This review is sort of more about the first 6 books than just book 6. Every time anyone comes across a problem, it gets solved almost immediately. They are constantly contradicting each other. At one point I think they mention getting Alica out of Jess but then they go back to he entity. Just an example. The story is good, but the writing needs work.

I have been listening to this series on audible and the book is an interesting mix of the real world and a magical world. The characters are well written and have his characterization. The overall plot follows a nice flow and keeps your attention.
