A Hunting We Did Go : True Mountain Adventures

"To sit in nature’s cathedral and look down on the creator’s masterpiece is almost a spiritual experience for Lloyd Antypowich. Every year, for forty years, he took time out of his busy life and followed the call of his heart as it led him into the mountains that he loved. He revelled in their magnificence, the splendour of nature and the solitude that “recharged his batteries.”

He sharpened his senses, as he pitted his skills against those of the animals that he stalked; animals that in their own territory are much more skilled than man, and time after time beat him in the challenge. If he got his game it was a bonus. The real success was reconnecting with nature and enjoying the peace that he found there, away from the stress and chaos of everyday life.

Many dream of experiencing nature as he did, but he lived those dreams. In A Hunting We Did Go, True Mountain Adventures, the author takes you along on his journeys into the mountains. While you read, you feel like he is right there beside you, sharing his experiences with you. You feel his wonder, his awe, the excitement of the stalk, his exhaustion after a rough climb or hours in the saddle, his fear when he comes face to face with a grizzly bear, a cougar and even an unhappy moose. You will also experience his satisfaction when he outwits his prey and the effort of bringing the meat into camp.

From his personal experience and firsthand knowledge of the subject and the settings, the author has woven a compelling read that shares the reality of hunting in the mountains."

I have never hunted, but I am a passionate environmentalist, who loves hiking and camping. As such I have to say `A Hunting We Did Go' is an amazing book. The author Lloyd Antypowich is not only an expert hunter but he loves what he does passionately. His love radiates from every page. I could so visualize his paradise, e.g. when Lloyd shares:

"...Grizzly Valley has an abundance of juniper and in the fall of the year grizzly feed on juniper berries. As we rode along I was enjoying the beautiful scenery. The colors seemed to blend so well. There were so many different colored bushes and small trees and the valley was a splendid example of the handy work of Mother Nature. No pictures or words can really explain just how beautiful it can be in the high country..."

That brings me to another reason why I loved reading this book. Even though I am a savvy camper (and a former girl scout troop leader) somehow I am not sure that a "greenhorn" like me could do a hiking trip like that. What would I do if I encountered a grizzly? Lloyd encounters a big one... a sort of stare-down with reaching an understanding follows. I loved reading the passage about "second chances" but won't give away spoilers here. What a neat thing that I got to read Lloyd's book instead of having to figure out what I would do.

Lloyd's hunting stories are stories of fairness. Though expert hunters seem to have so many technical advantages, hunting is not as easy as it sounds. The story "Never try to out run a caribou" eludes to that.

Lloyd Antypovich describes a special world of beautiful nature, animals, cool hunting cabins, and great friendships. I was very sad to read about the passing of his friend Leo, who also loved fishing like I do. I was ridiculous impressed (and slightly jealous) with the picture of the 12-lb Lake Trout the author caught at Quesnel Lake.

5 stars for `A Hunting We Did Go'. The stories and many fabulous pictures touched my heart. In fact, ever since I have my new Kindle this was the first book I downloaded to my computer just so I could see the many wonderful pictures on my 20x13" screen. I truly hope that as many people as possible (especially politicians) read these beautiful stories so they can "feel" why we have to protect these amazing natural habitats. Thank you, Lloyd, for giving me the opportunity to feel along with what it is really like to be one-on-one with nature

What a fascinating story. If you’re a huntsmen/outdoorsman, this is your book! Lloyd Antypowich takes the reader on many of his adventures into the wilds of Canada and the stunning scenery it has to offer, which is spectacular!
The story of Lloyd coming face-to-face with the largest grizzly he has ever seen will have your heart pounding. It reminded me of the story I read in Sport Illustrated, back in the late 60’s of the teenagers that were out camping in Yellowstone, that turned tragic. Fortunately for Gloria and him, his had a better outcome.
You will meet many of Lloyd’s hunting partners but no one as close as Leo. They were thick as flies but on one hunt, Leo just didn’t have the same fire he did in the past. He also worked for Lloyd and his boss noticed he was slowing down a bit, but attributed it to age. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. His daughter, at Lloyd’s convincing set up a Dr. appointment for her dad. He was sent to Vancouver for a more thorough examination where they found cancer, not in one spot but three. It was only a matter of time. The reader can feel Lloyd’s emotions come through the pages as he says goodbye to his long time hunting partner and friend.
I could go on and on on what a great story this is. It even had me reminiscing of my best friend, Mike Poehling who would have gotten along handsomely with Lloyd, for he to, was a great outdoorsman/sportsman.

This is a five star work.

Lloyd Antypowich shares with his readers his love of the outdoors, lets them experience the solitude and grandure of nature that he finds when he gets away from the turmoil of everyday life, and makes you feel like you are on the trip with him.

Lloyd is a hunter, but he shows the reader that the animals instincts and familiarity with the land scape will often outwit the efforts of man. He learned the skill of hunting at his father knee, during a time when hunting was a respected and honored tradition, a neccessitie for survival. Lloyd still has that respect and honors that tradition. He does not view hunting as an avenue to slaughter. Instead he pits his wits against his prey, and often comes up empty handed. But to him that is just another day in his mountainess retreat.

So join Lloyd Antypowich, sit around the fire with him, smell the coffee, hear the howl of the wolves, meet a grizzly bear face to face when the author only carrys a water pail, ride horseback as he scouts for game, hike the steep mountains along with him to find that the animals spotted you long ago and moved on,then come home exhausted. You may be temped to recreat the experience for yourself!

Don't miss this great read!
