It was a letdown.

I really loved the first book in this series so I went into this one with high expectations. Sadly, it didn't work out the way I hoped.

My main problem with this story was that I couldn't warm up to both Hunter and Rosie. Rosie isn't my kind of heroine. Never. She thought of herself as a strong and independent woman, but what I saw was opposite of what she thought she was.

Although Hunter is so damn hot, what he did to Rosie was one big NO for me. She gave him all of herself and her heart but he just walked away without saying a word, because he thought he wasn't good enough for her and it was good for her this way. Really?! He thought she was his responsibility and he was afraid he would fail her. I know, at that time he was young and stupid, but it was unacceptable that he saw his own mother in her, a vulnerable woman who believed she couldn't exist without his father. I was so fed up and this totally ruined the book for me.

I'm sorry. I can't rate it higher than 2 stars.

While second in a series, it isn't really necessary to have read the first to understand this one. Rosie's sister is present, but it's a standard sister relationship so you won't miss much if you haven't read the first.

Much like the first book, this is short and relies a lot on past action given through exposition. I wish that Rosie felt more like an actual martial artist, but I may be over-picky about that. Muay Thai is a particularly brutal martial art and if Rosie is into it then she should be a whole lot tougher than she is, here. And I'd have expected her to do a whole heck of a lot better when confronted by four untrained guys especially in a constrained space where they can't really gang up on her (as happens in the early part of the story).

As in the other story, too, most of the friction is Rosie's negative motivation*. Which was an additional layer of disappointment. Hunter wasn't bad, though he has kind of extreme communication issues. A lot of the angst could have been circumvented if he'd have lead with an explanation of what was going through his head five years ago when their relationship tanked. Course, then the story would be even shorter.

Anyway, the three stars is, in fact, rather generous but I had enough interest in finishing to justify that, I think.

A note about Steamy: There are two plus explicit sex scenes and they aren't short. Which means a significant portion of this is the sex and that's way past my steam tolerance, really.

* Negative Motivations: I kind of hate that the term "negative motivation" isn't widespread, yet. Since it isn't, I'm going to save off this little jag to append to my reviews that feature the term. Jennifer Crusie blogged about it a bit back and it changed how I understand story. The problem with the term is that if you've never heard it before, you'd assume it meant motivations that are harmful or immoral. Not so. What it refers to is motivations not to do something. The thing is that many of us are motivated to not do things for a lot of different, perfectly valid and reasonable, reasons. The problem is that in a story motivations to not do things are a huge drag on the plot—particularly considering the fact that most negative motivations are overcome by the character simply deciding they don't care any more (or, rather, that they do care and are now motivated to do the thing). So not only do you have a counter to action but you also have a situation where to overcome it, all a character has to do is change their mind. Which means eventually, the reader is rooting for the character to get over him/herself already and do the thing we want them to do. Conflict drives story. Conflict between a reader and a main character drives readers away from story.

Hunter the mysterious and Rosie the ass kicker.
When Rosie was 19 or so, she fell in love with Hunter. They were both into martial arts and had a torrid affair from which he walked without away without a second thought. Rosie was crushed and has kept her love life safe and boring since then. She had let her sore heart blind her to the bigger picture of their brief relationship. It was a powerful love, but there was a disconnect in their communication back then. Hunter returns from Thailand after making it big in the US film industry. Their re-acquaintance begins during one of her most embarrassing moments, of course. This one isn't as humorous as the first book Ripped, but it was still pretty entertaining. I was happy with the HEA and how things are resolved, but I was a bit underwhelmed by Hunter's interest in her at the start. After all the buildup in the last book and this one about how horribly crushed Rosie was, I wanted Hunter to be equally affected, but he wasn't. . I think the author was trying to say that the first time couldn't have lasted anyways, so it was just as well they split. ...About her ass-kicking
So all in all, a good read, but not as satisfying as the first book.

"He’d always been protective. He’d always tried to keep me from being hurt. The irony was that in the end he’d been the one who had hurt me."

description

I am a big sucker for "The one who got away.....but came back eventually" concept, so I guess it's no surprise why I liked this novella. This was a very quick read for me, and I honestly enjoyed it. I also enjoyed the first installment of this series, but I felt like the first book had a lighter plot than this one. I felt like Burned's plot had more depth, and the drama and conflict was more interesting.

I also really enjoyed Rosie and Hunter's relationship. It was funny and sweet, but it was actually more than that. Nobody knew Rosie like Hunter did, and vice versa. Their love was not only based on attraction, it was based on trust and friendship. They went through a lot together, and I really admire a relationship that has managed to withstand any experience, be it bad or good.
"I want all of it, Ninja. I want the good and the bad, the exciting and the mundane. I want to prop you up when you feel low, hold you when you’re sad and fight your battles."

I also loved the characters. Rosie was a spunky girl, who didn't let her troublesome past eat her away from the world. Also when Hunter left her with no closure of whatsoever (but of course, we know he did that for a very valid reason HAHA!) Instead, she decided to face the life she was dealt with, and used it to become stronger. She wasn't your typical girl. She can get down and dirty, and kick ass like nobody else. Likewise, Hunter also had a strong personality. But you can also bet that he has this sweet and protective side to him, especially when he was around Rosie. What can I say? Big Knight in Freaking Shining ABS--I mean armor! *wink* I also enjoyed reading the flashbacks! It's fun to get a glimpse of how they met, started their friendship and how it blossomed, and how it developed into something more special.

AND OMG THEIR SEXUAL TENSION!!!
"It was like the collision of two tectonic plates. I felt the tremor right through me from the top of my scalp to the soles of my feet and for a moment I was back there in the madness of it, my mind twisted by the ferocious sexual chemistry that only happened when we were together."

I still remember the first Cosmo Red Hot Read I read by Sarah Morgan called Ripped! It was all kinds of hilarious funny and extremely super hot.

So of course I jumped at the chance to read her second CRHR and oh my was it all kinds of awesomeness! The author once again gave that super sexy flair of passion meets reality meets humor all neatly wrapped with a big bow of amazing writing!

The story tells of Rosie and how her perfect zen balance is thrown for a serious loop when her former coach and lover Hunter Black becomes her new boss!

Talk about awkward! I for one would feel so out of place and would lose more than just my zen. But Rosie decides she won't go all nutty with all the sexual energy crackling between them, she'll instead go a little slutty and take what she wants but this time it's play by her rules or no playing at all. Poor Hunter has no idea what he's in for.

I really loved the sexiness of this read, the super hot chemistry between Rosie and Hunter was off the charts, and had this certain sneak around kind of feel about it making it all the more sexier.

The characters were very well written and nicely developed for a short read. None of that "I am missing this part about the personality or What? Why? What did I miss?" I know from previous short reads by other authors that it so very often happens that all you have a super red hot sexy story but no substance into the characters and it all just seems too rushed, not the case in this read, nice work Sarah!

Aside from sexy heat, fantastic chemistry, well developed characters there was also the fact that this is a fantastic well written second chances read.

I totally loved the ending in this read, it was so sweet, so kind so melt my heart inspiring it took my breath away. But am of course not going to tell you, you will need to read it for yourself all I will say is " Happy Birthday Ninja!"

Long lost love

Nico and Rosie were each other's first loves so when they meet again 5 years later she tries to play it cool. There is too much raw sexual tension between these two too deny and it draws them back to each other. Being terrified of loving Nico again Rosie breaks things off but true love conquers all when Nico refuses to let her go.

It started off with a ton of promise- and quickly fell on it's face. It's been a build up of hurt for the readers. Starting in Ripped when we first meet Rosie and find out about her mountain sized (or Hunter sized) weight on her shoulders. Readers get the understanding that Hunter hurt Rosie and therefore Hunter in an asshole. And for five long years she's been nursing this wound, never letting it heal. Purposefully retarding her relationship growth by choosing losers. Burned begins with Rosie getting dumped by yet another loser (this seems to be a pattern for her post Hunter), and this kick ass lady is letting some celery stick of a man go on and on about all her supposed 'deficiencies'. She's just reinforcing a ton of self hatred towards herself. Like I said, she is letting all her wounds fester. Hunter shows up on a dinner date (with a blonde friend or date Rosie cannot see the woman as anything else but a date) and her brain starts exploding. Rushing out of the restaurant- but not before Hunter gets to hear all the bullshit that the celery ex-boyfriend has to say about her. Then she gets caught in an alley by a gang of would be rapists- and this muay-thai kickboxer cannot save herself, no, Hunter MUST come to the rescue. Then he gets to be all up in her space and bosses her around. Follows her into her house. And does not take no for an answer because he's so Alpha, and so 'competent' that he can keep saving her from herself. It's like nails on a fucking chalkboard to me. When Hayley came to the door and to Rosie's defense I thought OK, here's the part where the supposed jerk gets told off by someone finally. Well if he could catch an insult in the slew of Rosie-humiliating word vomit that Hayley spewed I'd be amazed. Everything Hayley said was intended by the author to put Rosie at a disadvantage. The power structure was never once in her favor.

All this time Rosie is fighting her attraction to him. I get that. I get having someone so in your blood that you cannot think of anything else but having them again. But that isn't always love. Sometimes that is being addicted to someone who is terrible for you. Hunter and Rosie have such an awesome back story, I love the tension and heartbreak having him have left her so coldly after having meant so much to each other- but it was all so easy for him to get Rosie back in his orbit. He gets to just jump back into her life without hardly any resistance. Rosie talks herself- and gets talked into giving Hunter a chance. And there is maybe half a chapter in which Rosie spends a miserable couple of weeks avoiding Hunter, and that is suppose to make me cheer for them to be together? I still can't understand how Hunter got to break her heart and then waltz back into it no problem. Why build up my righteous anger at him if I wasn't going to see him grovel or be grounded under a boot- even for a minute? I had whiplash going from hating Hunter for Rosie, to saying "Oh no girl! remember how he dumped you?" as Rosie spends a weekend with him saying it's only sex, then reading her immediately start asking him every girlfriend/relationship question known to man. To pushing him away for a nano second, to happily ever after. Burned could have really been something special, but working within the confines of being novella sized, this story had no room to breath. I feel short changed. I think my idea of romantically holding onto a grudge and making someone suffer comes from a teenaged version of me reading Judith McNaught's Paradise. That is why I'm so frustrated by Burned, it could have really simmered before it boiled over you know?

FTC : I requested this book from NetGalley. It is the first I have read from this author.

This is another great read from the Cosmo Hot Reads line and now I am going to go back and read the first in the series (I didn’t realise that it was the second in the series ’til half way in). It is hot, funny and the only complaint is that I didn’t think there was a whole lot of character development going on but I’m going to put that down to the length.

This book is written in first POV but I liked the character of Rosie so that was fine. She was tough, much to the disgust of her other suitors, but not when it came to Hunter. When it came to Hunter she was a marshmallow and it was fun to watch her struggle not to jump on him at every opportunity. I think the majority of women would relate to her internal struggle not to show how she was feeling towards a man she thought left her for being too clingy the first time round. She didn’t want to want him, did everything in her power not to want him, but in the end he was just too much. The good thing about this book being written from her POV was this book had a dry sense of wit running through it because of it; there were many moments that made me chuckle.

Because this was written in first POV, I never actually found out how Hunter felt about….well, anything! Rosie made a lot of assumptions about him but I read his actions in a different way to the way she did. From the moment he first came back into her life, he tried with her. He tried to show that he cared about her with his actions. He respected her strength, adored her as a woman and was God-damn dreamy. I loved him but I was unsure of his intentions towards Rosie, wasn’t sure if he wanted to be anything more than a bed-mate because she never let him talk. That is one issue I had with this book being written from only Rosie’s POV; I feel it took something away from the story for me as a reader.

This is a short, sassy, sexy mouthful of a read. I loved the characters, love the set-up and most of all I loved Hunter!

Unless you’ve lived through it no one ever knows how they will react if they were to see their first love and first heartbreak return into their lives. I know we’d all like to think we could handle it, be mature, forget the past and that’s exactly what the heroine in Sarah Morgan’s Burned tries to do but instead she finds herself in a bad situation one her ex helps her get out of right before he swoops in and throws her life upside down once again.
I’m a sucker for lover’s reunited stories and this is a very good one. Rosie is one of those heroines I fell immediately in love with because she refuses to change who she is for a man. She’s tough, she loves her job, has great friends, and a sister who loves her. The one thing that has escaped her is a man who treats her well, isn’t threatened by her strength, and who loves her the way she is. Then Hunter Black walks back in her life stirring up the hurt from the past and making her heart and body react like no other man since he left her years ago. Thing is it’s easy to see that Hunter is equally affected by their intense chemistry and appreciates all aspects of Rosie which makes me love him all the more.
It doesn’t take this couple long to jump back in to a physical relationship one that Rosie insists only be physical because her heart can’t take another pounding. Together they are combustible and their intimate scenes are scorching hot.
Although this is a novella, the characters are well developed and their relationship doesn’t play out so easily that it’s unbelievable. I felt this author did a great job of balancing this story; there was just enough strife to make it interesting, some fantastic sexy times, and the relationship had a foundation from the past in which to build upon. Sarah Morgan is a new to me author but after reading Burned, I’ll be checking out her other offerings soon.

I loved "Ripped", Hayley and Nico's story and of course I wanted to know who Rosie's ex was. I mean, he had taken on Voldemort like proportions! Well, I finally read "Burned" and got to meet him and boy was he worth the wait.

The story starts with Rosie in a lovely restaurant getting dumped by current boyfriend and tool Brian. He's intimidated by the fact that she is stronger and more bad ass than he is ann wishes she would join a book club and bake cakes. Tool! While listening to this idiot Rosie notices a couple who had just gotten seated, the guy looks a bit familiar but she dismisses it until he turns around and her past comes crashing back on her.

Yes, "he who must not be named" is back and he is back in Rosie's life like a tornado ripping through. She tries her best to avoid him but the circumstances make it almost impossible. Plus, he seems to be on a mission to get Rosie back. Her mind wants no part of it, however, her body is saying a a whole other story. Watching them battle was so much fun. I have to give it to Rosie, she fought a good fight.

My favorite part of this story was Hayley's reaction to Hunter being back. I want a sister like that. My sister's are too polite to go all out. I love them, but I'd love it if we could be more like Hayley and Rosie. I absolutely enjoyed the Miller Sisters series and highly recommend it if you enjoy well written, fun stories with steamy sex and fantasy worthy guys!!

And she's done it again!

I do believe Sarah Morgan may just have stolen the crown as my number one red-hot read author. I've found that with Sarah Morgan books especially her Cosmo red-hot titles that she has a fabulous way with words. They read with such ease and clarity that you can not help but fall in love with the characters or the plot.

Burned is brilliant, I loved it. I loved that it linked in with the first in the Miller Sister series Ripped, and I loved that yet again as hot and wild as it was it had a romantic lovely story underneath which made it just that bit better than the rest that are just full on erotica. It was pretty obvious during the end what was going to happen, but that wasn't a bad thing at all. It was the link to book one that made you smile widely and be all giddy with excitement. It truly is a magical book and a magical series.

Bursting with sexual tension this book it is as hot as hell and you can guarantee to have your fingers burned whilst reading it.

I gotta say...I'm kind of annoyed.

Page after page was just Rosie brooding about her past with Hunter. How broken he left her when he broke things off. How she was actually very clingy so she can't really blame him. And because she thinks that's the reason he broke up with her she's too embarrassed to question him why he actually left. But now she has learned her lesson and is 'strong.' HA! She was not strong at all! She was pathetic. It's been 5 years, move on!

And then more pages of just inner monologues about how sexy and powerful Hunter is. How crazy their chemistry is. And she couldn't even be in the same room with him without getting all hot and bothered. Like, I get it. You guys have chemistry. No need to hit me over the head with it repeatedly.

I'm so disappointed. At the beginning I thought Rosie was going to be a kick-ass heroine but she was so whiny and pathetic.

The story would've been better if we had Hunter's POV as well.

Still a solid read from Sarah Morgan, but I didn't find it was witty as the first book about the other Miller sister, and it feels like there was a lot of tiptoeing between around that could have been avoided between the two main characters, who had a past together before Hunter left suddenly.

Memorable funny quotes:
I started, fascinated, envious, as the guy threw a bundle of notes on the table without counting them. So cool. I've only ever seen that happen in the movies. If I'd done the same thing I would have showered the table with receipts, expired coupons chocolate wrappers and a ton of other crap that somehow finds its way into my purse.
I laughed at that because that was also totally me, except me as a mom I would probably also be throwing my kids' Kinder toys and wet socks on the table.

I read "Ripped" last year and it was a revelation: funny, hot and sweet. So I got "Burned" as soon as it came out.

Much to my disappointment, I did not enjoy this story. Three themes were repeated over and over again: lousy childhood/bad parents of the heroine, first breakup was her fault for being so clingy/messed up and how she was so much stronger now. Unfortunately, her actions didn't support the last. If the repetitive affirmations had been edited out, the story would have been about 4 chapters long!

Instant lust I expect from a Cosmo Red Hot Read. I'd like to have some support for it, though. Waffling and floundering around do not endear a heroine to me.

There were some funny and sexy moments. However, I was so upset with the heroine that I didn't pay much attention to the hero or anything else.

Whenever you want to escpae to the world of romance go grab one of Sarah Morgan's books and curl on sofa with a cup of hot chocolate :).
Burned is book two in the Miller sistres series. It is a second chance story "my favourite storyline".
Rosie and Hunter are back together after 5 years of no see. The chemistry between them confirmed that there are hidden feelings that both Rosie and Hunter unravelled with so much delicatness and raw emotions. The time they stayed together proved that the 5 years gape between them couldn't change much if any of their feelings and that what is known as True love. I did love the story so much though for me the story of Haley and Nico was much fun and heart-warming.

This story just got better the further you read!

I'm always hesitant with stories that (and there's no spoilers here since this is back story) a hero walks out on heroine years ago and devastates her.

But, there really is something very endearing in the way that both of these characters react around each other-quite apart from the explosive chemistry. There are good reasons for how they've both reacted in the past which is refreshing.

Great job by the author and well worth a read if you love an emotive and passion filled read!

A short sexy read from a great author.

However, I have to say that as a Brit myself reading a book written by a Brit and set in the UK, I did find the Americanisms kind of annoying. Rosie mocks Hunter for using 'elevator' and says he must have spent too much time in Hollywood but just before this, Hunter talks about taking her to the "ER" which she doesn't comment on. And no Brit I know would refer to University as "college".

This was an incredibly quick read. I enjoyed it, but I think Sarah Morgan needs more page time to fully flesh out a story and characters. Hunter and ...Rosie (damn, I just finished and nearly forgot her name) are a great couple that anyone can see belong together.

I had a couple of minor issues - the biggest one being the use of assault so the guy can rush in to the rescue, but still not enough to even really do more than make me frown for a moment.

I did appreciate how capable Rosie seems to be. I liked that she teaches self-defense classes, is a black belt in karate, and is studying Muay Thai. I liked that her attraction to Hunter was that she could be who she was, 100%, without holding back, and was comfortable with him. It wasn't just the chemistry between them (which did light off crazy-hot sparks). It was how they were together. And the thing I loved about Hunter was that his past, despite being more than enough to turn most romance-heroes off of romance, didn't do that to him. He was rational enough to realize that not all relationships are as unhealthy as his reference material. And smart enough to go after who he wants.

I'm not always a fan of a man making a choice for a woman, especially in a relationship, but I appreciated how that was handled here. It made sense to me, and maybe he didn't handle it exactly the right way, but I think he did the right thing. Having guessed that was the reason he left (and I do love reunion romances), I was prepared to not be happy with the revelation there. But I was pleasantly surprised and ended up liking both characters more.

I think the only thing better here would have been more time for both of them, and me, to fall into the relationship. Of course that probably would have added more drama, and I do love that these short-stories are nearly drama free.

There's just something about two people capable of kicking the shit out of each other, but falling in love instead.
...
With a little kicking the shit out of each other, let's be realistic.

I really liked this.
Second chance romance is always a winner; nothing more satisfying than the ending you want for two people - before you even know it - coming to fruition.
And the sensitivity towards women who can fight but still feel and are vulnerable to toxic men was nicely realised.
Just because we can throw a punch doesn't make us any less a potential candidate for all manner of patriarchal violations. It's a fact women all know, accept and abhor. It sucks, and will always suck.
The safety of women shouldn't depend on men being able to control themselves.
We should just be fucking safe. At all times. Even down a dark alleyway in 6 inch heels and no upper body strength.
I'll say 'til the day I die:

I need to stop. Reading. Second. Chance. Romances. They almost never work for me, and I need to accept this. The parts I enjoyed most about this book were being in the heroine's head and her interactions with her sister (unsurprising, given that I enjoyed the first book, which was focused on the older sister, more). For me, the first book in the series was good but too short; this book, on the other hand, was also too short, but only because there was seriously insufficient groveling. Not the book for me.
