#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery writes heartwarming and humorous novels about the relationships that define women's lives—family, friendship, romance. She's best known for putting nuanced characters into emotionally complex, real-life situations with twists that surprise readers to laughter. Because Susan is passionate about animal welfare, pets play a big role in her books. Beloved by millions of readers worldwide, her books have been translated into 28 languages.

Critics have dubbed Mallery "the new queen of romantic fiction." (Walmart) Booklist says, "Romance novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and RT Book Reviews puts her "in a class by herself!" It's no wonder that her books have spent more than 200 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list.

Although Susan majored in Accounting, she never worked as an accountant because she was published straight out of college with two books the same month. Sixteen prolific years and seventy-four books later, she hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time with Accidentally Yours in 2008. She made many appearances in the Top 10 before (finally) hitting #1 in 2015 with Thrill Me, the twentieth book in her most popular series, the Fool's Gold romances, and the fourth of five books released that year.

Susan lives in Washington state with her husband, two ragdoll cats, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Her heart for animals has led Susan to become an active supporter of the Seattle Humane Society. Visit Susan online at www.SusanMallery.com.

To be honest, I was looking for a light read. And the title appealed to me. Having facilitated a book club for 12 years, this sounded like something that would be a delightful experience. I wondered if I would meet a group of interesting women who love to read and talk about books.

Well, the theme of the summer book club was secondary in that they read mysteries one summer, old-time science fiction the next and 80s romances, in the last one. It really didn’t play much into the storyline other than what they were reading.

This was really a story about second chances in life and love. And what the women did with it.

And yes, it was a light read with serious issues for the women to overcome and recognize their strength along the way. If this appeals to you, it will be a somewhat satisfying read.

The Summer Book Club focuses on three women, their friendship, their past and their strengths.
Each is facing a challenge in their life and with the love and support (even tough love) of each other they find a way to overcome their obstacles.
I enjoyed all of the characters and would have enjoyed an epilogue.

Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing/Canary Street Press for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.

Could I please get:
- a female character with self-esteem
- less inner dialogue (especially if we are just putting all the second-guessing on repeat)
- a leading man who could actually exist in this world we live in (for example, 1-5 small flaws? a quirk, perhaps?)
- a plot event that could not be seen from a mile away
- some heat to go with any or all of the romances
- a title that conveys something closer to what this book is actually about ... because it is just barely about a book club

The story line had a strong possibility of being a great book, but the characters are just not that likable. They constantly repeat the same things over and over.
Also does any of the females in the book have self esteem? It’s annoying

EXCERPT: The fortysomething teacher with prematurely gray hair smiled as soon as she saw Laurel.

“You look panicked.”

“I’m having some breathing issues,” Laurel admitted lightly, shaking the other woman’s hand before sitting in the chair next to her desk. “I don’t usually get asked in for either of my girls.”

“That’s right. Jagger has a younger sister.”

“Ariana. She’s ten. She’ll be in middle school next fall.”

“We look forward to having her.” Mrs. Krysty rested her hands on the desk. “I want to start by saying that Jagger’s doing well in all her classes. I spoke to her other teachers myself and they think she’s an excellent student. She’s friendly, cooperative, bright and well-liked.”

The other woman smiled. “She seems to be a natural leader and has no trouble expressing her opinion.”

Laurel told herself to relax, that so far nothing bad was being shared—only she was pretty sure there was a giant “but” in her future.

“There have been a few odd comments,” Mrs. Krysty said slowly.

Odd comments? “About what?”

“It’s more a who.” She paused. “About men, actually.”

“Men? What does that mean?”

“Last week, in her European history class, the teacher showed how the Cold War was linked to World War II and other events of the past hundred years. Jagger said wars were started by men and if they would mind their own business, the world would be a better place.”

Mrs. Krysty offered a faint smile. “Conversation became heated and Jagger and another student got into a shouting match. Jagger told him that men have always subjugated women, that they only care about themselves and not their families, and for him to give her one example of a woman starting a war. Any war.”

“She’s not wrong,” Laurel murmured. “Women haven’t been in power until recently so they couldn’t start wars, but I’m guessing that isn’t your point.”

“No. In her social studies class they were discussing different forms of courtship. How some customs are similar to what we’re familiar with and some are not. The example was that even in modern India, many couples use matchmakers.”

Mrs. Krysty put on her reading glasses and glanced at her notes. “Jagger said she was never getting married because men can’t be trusted and always let you down. Women would be better off living together in groups and only letting in men so they can have babies, then locking them out.”

She dropped her glasses to the desk. “I understand you and Jagger’s father are recently divorced and that’s always traumatic for the children, but this seems like more than that. Jagger seems to dislike and mistrust men.”

“That can’t be true,” Laurel said automatically, as confused by what her daughter meant as by where she’d developed that attitude. “She’s never said anything to me.”

At least she didn’t think she had. It wasn’t as if they sat around discussing gender roles and whether or not men made good fathers in general. She knew Jagger was furious with her dad for leaving and that her oldest had become protective, but not to the point where she didn’t like men.

“What about the male role models in her life?” Mrs. Krysty asked. “How is she getting along with them?”

“Male role models?”

“Male role models?”

“Yes. An uncle, or grandfather. A family friend. Perhaps someone you’re seeing.”

“You mean am I dating? God, no. Not only does love turn women into idiots, the last thing I need in my life is some man screwing up everything that I’ve…” Her voice trailed off as horror swept through her."

ABOUT 'THE SUMMER BOOK CLUB': The rules of summer book club are simple:
• No sad books
• No pressure
• Yessssss, wine!

Besties Laurel and Paris are excited to welcome Cassie to the group. This year, the book club is all about fill-your-heart reads, an escape from the chaos of the everyday—running a business, raising a family, juggling a hundred to-dos. Even the dog is demanding (but the bestest boy).

Since Laurel’s divorce, she feels like the Worst Mom Ever. Her skepticism of men may have scarred her vulnerable daughters. Cassie has an unfortunate habit of falling for ridiculous man-boys who dump her once she fixes them. Paris knows good men exist. She’s still reeling after chasing off the only one brave enough—and foolish enough—to marry her.

Inspired by the heroines who risk everything for fulfillment, Laurel, Paris and Cassie begin to take chances—big chances—in life, in love. Facing an unwritten chapter can be terrifying. But it can be exhilarating, too, if only they can find the courage to change.

MY THOUGHTS: The Summer Book club is not so much about a book club at all! - in fact, the book club itself barely features - it is more about being open to change and second chances.

We all know women like Laurel, Paris and Cassie. Laurel and Paris are long-time friends who accept Cassie into their little group when she moves to Los Lobos from Bar Harbour, Maine. Each of the friends face a 'pivotal moment' in their lives and rely on the good advice and encouragement of the other two to make the right decision.

There are one or two cringeworthy moments (I did - I physically cringed!) and some rather more frequent annoyingly repetitive angst-ridden declarations; but if you can get past these, you'll enjoy the read. Susan Mallery's books are ideal if you are wanting a light read with a guaranteed happy ever after ending.

I enjoyed the diverse characters of the women - there's always someone you can relate to in a Susan Mallery book - and the challenges they faced. Of the three women's stories I enjoyed Laurel's the most. I also enjoyed the thrifting expeditions!

The Summer Book Club didn't set my world on fire but it was an enjoyable, fun and comforting read.

I grabbed this book as soon as I saw it. Susan Mallery's books are always fun to read and I've enjoyed many of them. This book has three main characters: Paris, who owns her own farm stand; Laurel, who resells items she finds at thrift stores and estate sales and resells them for profit; and Cassie, who is new to town and working at a wine bar/bookstore. Each of these women have issues they need to overcome to find happiness in their lives and all are currently single or divorced.

My Thoughts:
I loved the way the story developed and the characters were fully drawn so that I felt as if I knew them. I liked all these charactes, but enjoyed Cassie's story the most. Each woman faced an obstacle that she had to deal with to move on with her life, and the ways they dealt with their issues was interesting. Susan Mallery is a masterful storyteller and I recommend this to anyone who likes reading about relationships.

The author portrays the three main female characters as weak, needy and emotionally unstable.

The story line is predictable and boring.

A light realistic romance.

Three different women with different paths and concerns in life, but they have one thing in common – a love of books.

The book itself doesn't focus on the "summer book club" – there are many other things going on.

While reading this book, I had the feeling that it was real – as if the events were really happening somewhere in a small town in the US.

Laurel & Colton, Paris & Jonah, Cassie & Raphael – these couples were so well written, the development of the women and their backstory was enough to warm my heart on a cold winter evening.

This could be a very cosy family film :>

🤔🧐🤯MY THOUGHTS:🤯🧐🤔

I’m not impressed with this book. It was okay but I expected a bit more. It was just filler and something to listen to while doing laundry and housework.

There is an HEA for the women but even that was pretty mundane.

I love Susan Mallery's books, and while The Summer Book Club didn't move me as much as some of her others have, it was still a beautiful story and I'm glad I didn't miss it! Laurel and Paris are best friends who take Cassie under their wing and into their book club when she moves to Los Lobos after getting kicked out of the family home by her brother and sister. All Cassie wants to do from the moment she arrives is to leave again, but then her friendship with the other women starts to solidify and she even gains a love interest which then leads her to some challenging decisions. I loved the way all 3 of the women grew throughout the book and how Cassie especially blossomed by the end.

The one thing I do wish was that the audiobook had included more than one narrator and even though I did love Tanya Eby, the viewpoints felt rather muddled for me. The story is told through Laurel, Paris, and Cassies POVs, and even though they are different people with different things going on, they ended up feeling rather similar to me. I also wished the book club aspect was more prominent in the storyline considering it's in the actual title, but be that as it may, this was still a heartwarming read about second chances. There was also the perfect amount of humor and romance mixed in and overall was a very feel-good read that I would 100% recommend be tossed (gently and lovingly) into your beach bag this summer.

We all have baggage from our past that we wish we could check to another destination. Sometimes it takes a different set of hands to point you in the direction of the airport. And sometimes it takes a friend or two to show you that once you do that you can move on and learn to live without all the guilt and sorrow that was packed in it. This, essentially, is the story of Laurel, Paris, and Cassie, each woman struggling with issues from their younger years and searching for that ultimate happiness in life. Together they learn to lean on each other to find the answers to their life questions. Susan Mallery does a fantastic job of weaving regrets with acceptance and forgiveness to show us how this is done. Well done!

Paris, Laurel, and Cassie all have their issues to work through during summer book club in Mallery's latest. Paris had severe anger issues that she feels she has a handle on, but her life is upended when her ex, who left her in the midst of her tirades is back in town. Laurel's doing great with her daughters, but she's shocked to find out her oldest hates men, due to Laurel's terrible ex husband, but when she finds a new guy to be her friend and show her daughters that all men aren't terrible, she finds she's very attracted to him. Then there's Cassie who has just been forced out of her old life in Maine by her siblings and is in town to see about an inheritance from her uncle. She's meant to only be there for six months, but she starts building a life for herself and finds she doesn't actually want to leave after all. Full of the sweetness, fun, and heart that you've come to expect from a Mallery story, The Summer Book Club does bot disappoint.

This was a good, easy read. The book club portion was a very minor point, but I guess she had to name it something. The problems mostly felt relatable and I didn't find myself yelling at the characters for their dumb decisions like I do in a lot of these types of books.

I've read Susan Mallery before, so I was excited for this one. But, ultimately, it was a big let down for me. There was so much potential. Now, I will say, I am not a huge fan 3rd-person writing. But if the story is good, I can easily get past it. This was not the case. There was so much potential here, but it just fell flat in the end This book follows three women struggling with navigating different areas of their lives. One is moving away from everything she's ever known, one is facing her past, and the other is worrying about how her life decisions have ruined her children. Again -- potential. But when you take something that can be so good and keep it monotoned, it loses it's appeal. Mallery flirted with the idea of fake dating, but never actually played into it. She flirted with self-acceptance, but the characters, for the most part, weren't actually learning self-love. It just felt like there was so much depth missing from each of the characters. The title is also quite misleading as the book barely delves into the book club and focuses more so on their individual lives and how they intertwine. I wanted to love this, but I just really missed the raw emotion that was needed here.

Thank you @netgalley, @htpbooks and @canarystreetpress for sending me this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
I’ve been reading Susan Mallery books for several years now (well before I had this account). I enjoy them and some are better than others, but I think now that I’ve discovered so many new-to-me authors, I don’t rush to read these books like I used to.
Susan Mallery writes women’s fiction and they are usually about a group of female friends, each going through their own struggle. Often the themes in her books include friendship, family, romance, and new beginnings. The Summer Book Club is about two best friends, Laurel and Paris, and Cassie who moves to town and joins their book club and friend group. They are each single and have their own issues with getting into a relationship.
This wasn’t my favourite of her books as some of the storylines seemed a bit exaggerated, but I do generally like her writing and I find her books to be pretty quick reads. If you like books that follow a certain formula or books about a group of female friends, you might enjoy this book.

The Summer Book Club is a story of friendship, bonding over books, new beginnings, taking chances and romance. Three women; recently divorced Laurel, single Cassie who has moved to California to claim an inheritance and been kicked out of her siblings home, and Paris, a woman who has been divorced for many years and finally learned to deal with her temper and emotions, are in a summer book club. They are reading romance books from the 1980s and decide to follow the heroines in the books by taking chances that may lead to love.

That is all I will say about the plot of this book. I loved these three friends. They are women who had to deal with things in their past to become the women they are by the end of this book. Susan Mallery has created three wonderful characters, ones that I would like to meet and become friends with. They have a great relationship and support each other in many ways. Although Cassie is new to this group, they accept her and invite her in to their group. The secondary characters also play important roles in this book. We have Laurel's girls who are dealing with an absent father and all the feelings that brings up, a team of archaeologists working on Cassie's land and Paris' ex-husband who has returned to take care of his grandmother and his son from his second marriage. The various storylines blend together seamlessly, making this a wonderful story that I recommend. I listened to this book, narrated by Tanya Eby. She gives the characters voice and makes this an enjoyable listening experience. My one niggle is that sometimes her voice is a bit too saccharine, but that might just be me. If you enjoy listening to your books, I recommend you give this one a listen.

Three women, each resilient, move on and make a life out of the hands they’ve been dealt. They bond and help each other thru their respective issues, each being the voice of reason for the others.

A lighter read centering on women helping, supporting and encouraging each other. Characters are very likable, most situations are relatable and realistic. The bookclub takes a very minor role in the story. I enjoyed seeing each women grow, both individually and as a sisterhood. Found the male characters more simplistic, lacking depth. Overall, it was a lighter read I enjoyed, especially not having read this author in a while. A fun beach read during the cold winter months.

I was given a free copy of The Summer Book Club in exchange for my honest review of the book. I am a huge Susan Mallery fan and I loved this book. The story is about two friends, Laurel and Paris who have known each other since grade school and basically are sisters who have been by each other’s side through all the ups and downs that life can dish out. Along came Cassie who was basically forced to move to the west coast for a certain time limit to see if she can strive on her own and make a life for herself. Once Cassie meets Laurel and Paris they quickly become a close group of friends with the help of a summer book club, wine and laughter. I loved reading about each individual character’s story and how they closely intertwined with each other and how they truly became such a close family. My favorite character was Cassie. I loved how we saw her growth once she was out on her own and making a life for herself. Her inheritance was a game changer for her and I loved that her uncle left behind a treasure that rooted her in a town that she loved around people that became her family away from family. The addition of a couple cute kids and a pup named, Bandit was a plus. If you enjoy reading about sisterhood with a mix of love and laughter I would recommend reading this book.

Was the writing good? Sure.

Was I interested in the three leading ladies? You bet.

Did I love the three male suitors? Hell yeah.

Was I annoyed at how much ground work was laid out for this book? How quickly they all got it together AT THE END? Did I want this "come to jesus" moment for all of them to happen earlier in the book, so I could see the orchard, garage sale, and the move-in come together? YES.

So.. I don't know. This book was fine. I'm glad they all got what they wanted and deserved. Reading this with a buddy definitely helped lol.

I just genuinely really like all of Susan Mallery’s books; she’s a solid 4 star author for me- they’re quick light reads with a lot of heart and humor. And they don’t disappoint. This one is in that sub genre of women’s fiction known as divorce fiction; centering on three women and there newly found friendship and there life struggles with their relationships and there children; it’s a simple story but it was very good.
