They were kind enough to bring with them a whole new slew of problems for me to deal with.
They’ve started a war of conquest, lost a fellow Marshall, and have done everything they can to make an already dangerous wasteland a powderkeg.
Now they want to send me across the Cut, the most dangerous stretch of irradiated territory in the wastes, to investigate why the Rebuild America System isn’t fully active. I’ve fought the monsters that have spilled from it, and haven’t heard of anyone whose crossed it, and lived. At least, not until now.
I’ve got mutants to cut, cultists to shoot, and mysteries to solve. To most this would all be a death sentence, to me? Sounds like job security.
I liked the story overall. The pacing was fine and there was consistent progression. I personally prefer fast paced growth. The second volumes antagonist was basically a walking pile of free abilities. But I knew eating the entire guy was out of the question. The amount of abilities the protagonist would have gained would be too much for the stories pacing. Knowing this, I predicted the story would set up the antagonists defeat in such a way that it would take the option out of the protagonists hands. The story did exactly that by blowing him to smithereens. Have the protagonist off handedly comment about how it’s such a shame their was nothing left of the guy to collect. But at least he got one bite in. I will admit, I did find that part somewhat unsatisfying even if I understood from a story telling perspective.
I would prefer slightly unconventional ways of growth. Like how eating the ursine bears infected with their own strain of the virus, gave him enhanced stamina. Their meat was low in radiation, so I assumed it was their version of the virus that did it. Upgrading the nanites in his body with the new system update seems pretty cool. But less satisfyingly given the upgrade will inevitably spread to other people. It would be nice if he gained at least a version of every type of observed deadman ability in the story and having those abilities grow in power. He still can’t grow in size and he doesn’t have the green glowing eyes that can see heat or radiation. Upgrades people, upgrades.
The only other issue I have with the story is that it’s too short. I felt like more could have been shown. Maybe the protagonist gets curious and decides to explore the tunnels in the gorge. Trying to find what the sign atop the warehouse was warning about. A mysterious energy? Maybe not actively seeking it out but stumbles upon it by accident. I was hoping to see the human tribes suddenly sweep through and attack Eden. But we didn’t get to see that. Maybe lean a bit more into the subtle supernatural elements that peak through into the world. Hearing the Russian voices in the cockpit was a pretty good moment. Pretty sure aliens are referenced in fallout and this series is clearly inspired by fallout.
I will continue to the third instalment in the series.

Ye gods soooooooo good! And soooooooo much fun!!! Book2 is even better than Deadman Walking, and I loved the first book! I actually started book 1 with trepidation because I hate zombies. But it's Not! So kick that silly notion right outta your head. Donavan (MC) is a Deadman his own race of people beings in this post apocalyptic world. Where Deadmen have been changed by nanites to live in this rad-toxic world. The human population, still living generally treats Deadman as the second rate class. Donavan is now a US Marshal in this weirdly westerneresque story. And with his gun ablazin he wanders the wastelands righting the wrongs, only stopping ta eat 'em if they truly deserve it. Donavan and his gun are the Law stopping the raiders and slavers whenever he runs across 'em. And killin monster beast's changed by radiation because thems good eatin! And he might deliver the mail along the way, his secondary job. And wow Heath Miller's proves himself as a top notch narrator! And he's in top form as he jumps into this weird western!!!
Liked this one a bit less than the first. Donovan continues to be true to his core self, but I’m not sure I like where the politics plot with the Remnants is taking the story largely due to his naïveté.
Felt he was being naive about leaving Potts behind after his meet with the Remnants and wished he would have assassinated the Prophet of the Republic.
His trip through the cut also was a bit of a let down for me. In terms of world building and story it was interesting but I had hoped he’d explore further than just the other side of the cut.
This book was also notably darker than the first, although not so much that I won’t keep reading.
As fun and fast paced as the first book. The side quests were well done, but I got impatient for the main story line to continue. Quite a few discoveries were made, and the fallout will be interesting to see in the next books.
Have to admit, I wasn't too impressed with what Donovan found in The Cut. Some things were disturbing, but there should have been much more for Donovan to deal with.
Will continue the series, I really want to know where the story is going.
I read this series online on Royalroad and thought it was really good with a unique MC. So I thought that I would give the author a bit of support with a review for letting folks read the series for free before publishing and not just doing one book before hiding the rest behind a pay wall.
Continues to build on the world presented in the first book and Donovan continues to be a fascinating, if somewhat disgusting character. Drags a bit then suddenly rushes to finish, but still worth reading.
Feels like a Deadman running nowhere. The first book was interesting, opening the world. the second book i feel like I'm on a journey going absolutely nowhere.
