Cyril woke up in a hospital bed with a ruined body and no memory of how it happened. His only chance at a normal life was agreeing to a splicer's experiment with a twisted he was forbidden to learn the circumstances surrounding his injuries.
Rose saved a life and wound up exiled from her gang, friendless and broke in Oolytau. Given an out by a notorious mob boss, she found herself in the Tracts working with a man who might be everything she never knew she needed.
Yet, the past has a way of shaping the future, and both would have to confront it in the wilderness with few friends and little hope of rescue. Rose would face the fight of her life, while Cyril must come to terms with the fact that non-humans are - first and last - monsters.
I've enjoyed this whole series If you liked all the previous books you will not be disappointed. Once again I'm really engrossed in the fantasy world building back story. Cebelius only gives out a few crumbs per book and what should be aggravating the hell out of me is instead a tantalizing mystery. Yeah, this one was pretty good. UPDATE two days later: I went back and restarted the series from book one and son of a bitch!, Cebelius sure as hell did drop hints and lay the ground work in book 1 for events that only come to light in book 5. I am impressed. I noticed other story lines being advanced and wondered how intricate this whole thing was and now I see this is approaching Christopher Nolan levels of wheels within wheels. And yet it's fairly subtle. you don't need the extras to enjoy each book as standalone.
A wonderful continuation of the series, whats more enjoyable about this series is how they connect with each other without focusing solely on a set of character. But still the event in one book will affect the characters of the other even if in an indirect manner. I like how the author has forethought some key elements for this series and decided to answer past speculations later on and still makes it work in an organic manner.
I will come right out and say I enjoy whatever Cebelius writes. He has both talent and skill with his story writing. Even knowing that the two leads will fall in love, each story in this quirky world of humans and monsters he's created feels fresh, real, and engaging. Each monster girl brings her own problems that the human male has to adjust to. And, at the end, a little disappointment that the story is over.
Rose is an oni woman who blossomed with a little love, which given the circumstances, you wouldn't think of as being romantic, but that's where the love comes in. If you like urban fantasy, give this series a try. I mean seriously, if you can imagine humans and elves or such, this series isn't much of a stretch.
Each of these stories can be read as stand-alone tales, but each novel builds on the previous ones, so when characters get mentioned, it has more of an impact, and the milieu continues to expand.
We're at the 5th book in the series and one thing i've come to expect from these books is that i can't have expectations. It never goes where I might think it will and that is the best part.
This man knows how to write a story.
The series continues to slowly expand the larger world and the shift its beginning to go through while primarily focusing on new characters because we're here for a story, not a history lesson lol. It was a very unexpected turn of events and Ceb really knows how to write. Each entry in this series is unique in its own way as well as its characters.
I've come to realize that the author is very intelligent in the way he constructs some of these passages, dialogue and plot points. I've re-read the other installments several times now, because i enjoy them that much, and I catch some new details or deeper understanding each time.
Some of the nods to other books in the series and its details are downright meticulous. As stated before, you could read these in almost any order and be fine. The extra details that the overarching books connect do not detract from the main story, but add a superb amount of context to the large amount of worldbuilding that we are only given a glipse of.
The worldbuilding seems so much deeper than the books allude to which is a stroke of genius in story telling to me. 10/10 series
Cebelius strikes again with yet another action romance. As always, the editing is superb. His dedication to the world building and storyline over having more sex scenes makes the book a joy to read. The inclusion of character's from his previous books are fun to spot while not having so many as to make them hard to remember. The first book is still my favorite due to my preference for slow burn romance, but this book definitely lives up to the quality the series has shown so far. I am ravenous for the next book, I must know what happens to the madam! (The slime core)
This man has set this series up to tease you relentlessly with hints of how overall amazing this crazy world is but never giving you everything you want to know for each story. Slowly but surely we learn more about this world and the monsters in it but never enough to make us understand what the future holds or what the main climax will be. I just want to know everything and what the heck he is building up to but I can tell you it was be huge, especially since a crazy dragon is involved and is shown to be just stupid powerful
Rose and Cyra are an interesting pair that bond under extraordinary circumstances in a well crafted story a with action, adventure, and spicy parts. Not to mention a crazy wanna be girlfriend. I like the call backs to other characters from his previous books in the series. And holy plot twists the ending. Looking forward to book 6! Do yourself a major favor and read these books!
I have been waiting on this book forever. Even without knowing the plot or characters initially, I knew I would love it. Cebelius is an awesome author, and this world is so deep and nuanced that every volume lets us adventure into a new part of it. I loved the fact that the characters left the city for once, and we got to see how others live. Can't wait for the next.
The author has hit on a winning formula here, and at book 5 the WYLAMG franchise is going strong. Lots of moving parts, and significant characters from previous books pop up often enough that you can see all the connections. Looks like this world has a fair bit of mileage to go, so expect to see more of these.
This book was amazing. I will refrain from saying too much here as it would go into spoiler territory however I strongly suggest reading the other books before reading this one. You won’t regret it.
Another awesome story from a great storyteller!!! I truly enjoy how this series is captured from different perspectives and still has tie ins to the main plot!! I can't wait to see what comes next!! A truly great series!!!
This story was absolutely fantastic. Other than velise i cant think of a better book in the series. I appreciate it wasnt another cop drama. It felt more like a horror story. Top tier writing. I also appreciate the "benny" side story progressing.
I await the red dragon story, will he have to die? Who will be his opposition? Budding sorcerer? Maybe team up of favorites! Since the "new" character has fluctuating weight/volume is it a succubus?
Each story stands on its own yet they all are building a world that is so enjoyable, so intriguing, and with amazing characters that I keep coming back to each story. Cebelius again does not disappoint. Well done!
This is a very good fantasy romance adventure novel. It is well written and edited. I especially like the succubus. I anxiously await the next in this series.
I enjoyed the others in the series more but it wasn’t a waste of my time either. If you like monster girls and romance, this will be an enjoyable experience for you.
I don’t even know where to start with this review.
Cebelius is at their finest with this book. Unlike previous installments in the series, the tension is racked all the way up to 9. It’s a dark, deeply saddening story, with a cast of characters that you can’t help loving.
Cebelius is known in the genre for their lifelike characters, and this book is an excellent reason why. The motives are all unique, interesting, and aren’t handed out at the start. We’re still learning about them up until the very last page. Not just the MC, either. Everyone feels real, their motivations authentic, and their hopes and dreams even more so. And the villain… not going to say anything else about them but holy shit. Heartbreaking.
The plot is another strong suit of the story. Everything is moved along at a pretty rapid pace, but it doesn’t feel rushed or overwhelming. I found myself genuinely surprised at many of the developments throughout the story, even more so than I have been for the past books in the series. Cebelius does a fantastic job of subverting what the reader expects the story to be about in every book of theirs I’ve read, and it really shines in this one. The last few chapters alone left me giving up on guessing what happens next and just reading as fast as I could to see where everything was leading. All the while the author develops the overarching narrative. Slowly tying the previous books to this one, setting up future plot points, and leaving little easter eggs for more loyal readers to pick up on.
Speaking of the plot, a warning: as previous mentioned, this book is dark. It covers some heavy themes and there is a good bit of fighting, gore, and death. The series hasn’t exactly shied away from that so far, but this is a massive step up in this department. If that’s a big no-no for you, skip this one.
The one thing I will point out with this story is that I don’t think it should be read as a standalone novel. I appreciate that Cebelius has tried really hard to make each novel its own contained plot, but this one falls a bit short of that. I truly feel that reading this without reading any of the previous books in the series would be a major detriment to your enjoyment. There’s just too much that the audience is expected to know about the main antagonist and overall world for it to be a 100% standalone novel. I don’t dislike this, though. I feel that, for this story to be told as well as it was, it was a necessary sacrifice. I only include this as a warning for anyone who might be deciding to start with this book for some reason.
Overall, this story surprised me. I love seeing the world develop in bits and pieces with each book, and I look forward to the next one.
If you're this far in the series, it's a bit more of everything you like (plus more smut, if that's your bag.)
However, this gets a 1 because of how they handled Rebecca at first really rubs me wrong. Not because sexual assault is defensible or because victims shouldn't be believed - Cyril's reaction is perfectly fine (and reasonable, as is his guilt and explanation about preference) - but because of how Griffin yen has already been established to be involuntary/compulsive behavior that drives a sufferer insane with obsessive yearning and desire towards a pairing they also have no choice over despite any other factors AND it's been established that the powers-that-be are aware of that - and the representative of those powers fails to mention any of that. So, you have a young woman who CANNOT control her obsession or jealousy because she is quite literally being forced into it by magic... and the author compares that to real life rapists who just choose to rape.
Whether she's a murderhobo OUTSIDE of the yen is pretty moot, it's implied she is, but we aren't told when the yen kicked in, so... but I will say that a yandere villain isn't bad.
As an aside, the whole Oni bit about "you need to fight and scream at me when I'm drunk and angry," also isn't great either, nevermind how obese people are talked about... I'm not saying anything has to be kumbaya and hugs (Velice straight up foofoos safewords more than once, which is NOT okay), but... I'm just saying, I like Cebelius' work overall, but some portrayal choices in this book are just... gross.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Of all the WYLAMG? novels, this is perhaps the darkest we've gotten, and god do I love it.
While there has always been a danger in every novel for the romance to overcome, "Rose" is the most brutal of them all, and continues to grow and further flesh out the unique world Cebelius has built.
If you're looking for a real life-or-death romance novel with action and elements of horror, look no further.
Interesting adventure outside the main city where most of the previous installments took place, again featuring a powerful griffin, as well as a giant Oni. Lots of action in this one, somewhat dark, and although it does feature the splicer sect it didn't clarify the developments of part 4 any further. Looking forward to a possible conclusion of the series that hopefully clears up some of my questions regarding backstory.
Yet another great book from cebelius and believe me towards the end of that book I received quite a shock but a good one now I can't wait for the next one the only thing is I wish cebelius would write faster I can't wait He writes such interesting characters and they're not too heavy on the adult stuff feels much more natural and less forced keep it up buddy
"And now for something completely different". This story was great, but initially it doesn't seem like a logical continuation from last book. Eventually, we do get some answers to earlier volume mysteries. I continue to really enjoy this series and can't wait for next book.
