The Hungry Bones

Rate this book
Alexa Glock is at a crossroads, personally and professionally. Now that DI Bruce Horne, who said he loved her, won't deny he cheated on his ex-wife, how can Alexa trust he won't cheat on her? She and her abandonment issues need some space, so she throws her hat in the ring for a position far from New Abertay University in Scotland. Her professional crush, Dr. Ben Odden, is interested in her expertise in teeth. If he makes an offer, will Alexa bite? Meanwhile, a human skeleton has been exhumed in a quaint former gold rush town in New Zealand. A benefactor believes that the bones are that of a Chinese gold miner, and she wants to repatriate the "hungry ghost" of her ancestor to China. Alexa is called in to examine the teeth and the secrets they contain. She didn't expect to discover a hole in the skull. When another skeleton is unearthed nearby and also shows evidence of a violent death, Alexa heads to the police station to open a cold case. Then, the town's beloved school principal goes missing. Alexa is quickly recruited to assist with the search, and as she digs into both cases, the secrets she uncovers make her dangerously unpopular with those who want to keep the past buried―and perhaps Alexa along with it.

Alexa Glock is at a crossroads, personally and professionally. And on a personal note: Now that DI Bruce Horne, who said he loved her, won't deny he cheated on his ex-wife, how can Alexa trust he won't cheat on her?

Alexa at a crossroads, both personally and professionally. When the question of "can I trust him", stalls her love life, she begins to explore new paths for her professional career at New Abertay University in Scotland and Dr. Ben Odden. It's a real change of pace from her current residence in New Zealand. As intriguing as all of this is, It slowed the story down. What had started at a fast pace seemed to come to a standstill while Alexa weight the pros and cons of this move. There's nothing like the discovery of a human skeleton to pick things up. The discovery of the skeleton that shows one too many holes in the skull. Soon another is found close by that Alexa believes to have had a rather violent death some time ago. Between the implications of historical, systemic racism, the cold case she reopens, and the school’s missing principal, Alexa may just have "bitten off more than she can chew".

There are some darker themes present in this good murder mystery. We learn that this killer has a bit of a bit of a nasty habit for paying a lot of close attention to the teeth and bones of his victims. The history of the place also takes center stage more than once, and not just in relation to one of the many puzzles that Alexa has to solve; it colors the scene everywhere she goes and presents a veritable kaleidoscope of sensory details that will draw the reader further and further into the story

Of course, being Alexa, and devoted to her job, she digs into these complex cases. Soon we have more players entering the game. We also learn of some juicy bits of gossip that she uncovers making Alexa out of the running for the "most popular person" with those who stand to lose something with each new discovery. Alexa is not bothered by any of this...not one iota... at least for the most part.

Sara Johnson has created a heroine who depends less on confrontations and more on her wits and intelligence, which all come in handy when the plot picks up the pace and each of the mysteries present their own twists and obstacles.

This is a book as well as a series, that was created Mystery & Suspense lovers, as well as anyone who enjoys seeing the past and the present crash together in unexpected ways,

Alexa Glock is still wondering what to do about her relationship with Bruce, so she's asked for some space to assess her feelings. She acknowledges that her brother is right, in that she has a tendency to run from a relationship when things might get serious.

In the meantime, she's applied for a job at New Abertay University in Scotland, and she's called in to examine the teeth of bones that have been found in a former gold rush town’s cemetery. A benefactor believes that these are the bones of a Chinese gold miner, and she wants to repatriate her ancestor's bones back to China.

Alexa is fascinated by the history and by the task, but everyone is surprised when the skull has an unexpected hole in it. Then another skeleton is found, and also shows evidence of violence, and Alexa decides this is a cold case, and wants to involve the police.

Then, a local school principal goes missing and everyone recruited for the search feels strongly, with no evidence, that a man, who was on parole after many years spent in jail, is guilty.

This was a fascinating and quite compelling entry in this series. Author Sara E. Johnson has incorporated a little of the history of a gold rush in New Zealand, the influx of a number of Chinese men there in the hopes of sending good money back home. Of course racism played a part in how their activities and opportunities were heavily circumscribed, and how they were harassed. Johnson extrapolates upon this history to tell of a man who came for the gold, but became a shopkeeper, and who wrote letters home for other men, and whose life was cut short for unknown reasons.

The author includes the dead man's letters, which further humanizes the early 1900s pair found in the cemetery, and touches Alexa in a way I don’t remember happening so deeply in her previous cases.

When in the process of investigating the present day murder, Alexa’s results invalidate the verdict of a murder case for which the parolee was convicted twenty-five years ago, and further investigation reveals some surprising connections.

The three different cases, as well as a more introspective Alexa make this novel particularly enjoyable, and I wonder in what new ways Alexa can apply her considerable technical skills, research abilities, and tenaciousness after the truth.

Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press for the digital copy to review.

This is the fifth book in the Alexa Glock series and as I had not read the prior four books, it read absolutely fine as a standalone. I did not have all of the history with the characters but I was up to speed quickly, and I connected well with Alexa as the protagonist. I loved the New Zealand setting, it was perfect for the story and loved that this procedural was focused on bones and the story they told, so this one was a little different than procedurals I’m used to reading. The historical aspect combined with the current day was well done, I liked this one a lot overall, and am looking forward to continuing on with the series.

I didn't realize going into this that it was the fifth book in this series. Normally, I try to read a series in order, but it really didn't end up being a problem. I caught on to the histories of the characters easily, and I'm interested in reading the first four books.

I enjoyed the historical and contemporary aspects of this story. They combined well to form an intriguing and mysterious plot. The history of the Chinese miners and how they were treated was hard to read, but riveting.

Alexa Glock is capable and driven. Her use of forensic science to help solve this mystery is compelling. I also loved the New Zealand setting. It doesn't seem like I read many books set there. It was very different from what I'm used to.

Overall, this was an entertaining read with a suspenseful mystery. I look forward to reading more of this series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Another riveting Alexa Glock forensic mystery. Sara E. Johnson skillfully weaves suspense, forensic science, New Zealand landscape and culture, a touch of humor, and a touch of romance through the eyes of a complex main character. Alexa is part reluctant hero, part confident scientist, and a completely believable, good-hearted human being.

The Hungry Bones is the fifth installment in the Alexa Glock forensic mysteries series by Sara E. Johnson.

With this being the fifth book and having not read any of the other books, I didn't really know what to expect, although I had high expectations being a crime buff and all. What I got was a suspense-less mystery with a less than desirable protagonist. It could be that I wasn't familiar enough with the character and the backstory, but Alexa's random tangent thoughts about Bruce (her kind-of ex...I think) just made her seem kind of weak and needy, especially since I don't know their relationship.

Being set in New Zealand, forensics and criminal investigation could be handled differently than they are here in the US where I live. Now, I don't know if the author thinks the readers are dumb, or if the characters thought that Alexa was dumb, but there were too many instances where someone explained the most basic crime/forensic rules. For instance, Alexa is told to grab an article of clothing for a search dog to use for tracking, and when she hands it to the dog handler, in an evidence bag and sealed, he proceeds to ask her if she touched it with bare hands. She's a freaking forensic analyst, she knows not to touch things without gloves!! I'm not sure if that was for the reader's benefit, but most people reading these types of books know the basics of forensics from other books, TV shows, and movies. Granted, how the media depicts these activities isn't always true to real life, but we get the gist of the basics.

This was slow to start, and didn't really seem to pick up the pace. Even though there are ongoing cases, there didn't seem to be any suspense or tension about solving them. I wasn't really concerned about the missing woman or how the cases would be solved. I was really indifferent to the characters and, really, the story as a whole.

All in all, I would say pass on this one unless you want some New Zealand history or have enjoyed the other books in the series.

Thank you to @PoisonedPenPress and @NetGalley for a digital copy for review consideration. All opinions are honest and my own.

Five stars!
Alexa Glock is a forensic odontologist who’s requested to accompany a dig within a small old mining town in New Zealand, paid for by an ancestor in China looking to bring the “hungry bones” of her ancestor home. Alexa’s main goal is to examine the teeth of the deceased, determine the DNA match and help them back to their rightful home.

During the dig, things change dramatically when there is another skeleton found nearby…with evidence of a very traumatic death, around the same time frame as the bones she is examining. Alexa takes this information to the police station, hoping to open a cold case and gain further knowledge of whose bones lie in the woods. At the station though, she learns that the school principal in town has been just been reported missing…at the same time as a popular named Murderer in town being released from prison,

Under the dangerous circumstances, Alexa is recruited to assist with the search for the missing principal, slowly uncovering many similarities between the recently MIA Principal and the unknown skeleton from many moons ago. This zeros in on the danger Alexa now faces very quickly, causing her to flip between the need of fighting for the others’ lives in their passing…and maybe even her own.

~I was completely unaware until the very last page that this is a 5th installment in a series, so needless to say, it reads perfectly fine as a standalone without confusion! I absolutely loved the forensic aspects of this novel, along with the character development throughout of the main character. We love a lead lady who can still make mistakes! Overall, this whole novel is a total whirlwind, and I was so sad realizing when I hit the last page that it was over. (Except for the other books in the series I now must go buy!?)
Great characters, great story, great details. Love.

A special thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for granting me the opportunity of reading an arc in exchange for an honest review!

I thought this one was a little slow in pace for the first 40% or so but then it picks up and doesn't stop till the very end. I was right in it with these characters trying to figure out this crime scene and the details. It felt like I was a part of CSI or something and I was drawing on my knowledge of shows and books I have read along this genre to figure it out. I did end up guessing some of the big plot points but was still satisfied with how it all played out. I also enjoyed that it was set in New Zealand since I haven't read many books set there before. I would read more Alexa Glcok mysteries in the future for sure!

The phrase "lying through your teeth" takes on a whole new meaning in the fifth installment of the Alexa Glock Forensics Mysteries, The Hungry Bones . From romantic entanglements and tough career choices, to mysteries that span time and continents, the odontologist returns with all the sarcasm and suspense that fans have come to know and love. Many thanks to Sourcebooks Landmark and Poisoned Pen Press for the advanced copy to review.

As mentioned above, this is not the first book of this series, so if you're reading any of the previous ones and don't want any spoilers, STOP HERE.

The plot immediately thickens as we find Alexa at a crossroads, both personally and professionally. As a matter of trust stalls her love life, she begins to explore new avenues for her professional development by way of New Abertay University in Scotland and one Dr. Ben Odden―quite the change of pace from her current residence in New Zealand. As intriguing as all of this is, this reader will admit that it made for a more sluggish start to the narrative than I'd initially anticipated. That's quickly remedied, however, by the discovery of a human skeleton in a town that once saw a gold rush and that features one too many holes in the skull, then another nearby that Alexa believes to have suffered a rather violent death once upon a time. Between the implications of historical, systemic racism, the cold case she reopens, and the school's missing principal, Alexa may just have bitten off more than she can chew with this one.

Amidst all of this drama, The Hungry Bones does a wonderful job of making readers feel like they can immerse themselves in the culture and scenery of New Zealand, which helps to both offset and accentuate some of the darker themes present in a good murder mystery in which the protagonist has a propensity for paying a lot of attention to teeth and bones. The history of the place also takes center stage more than once, and not just in relation to one of the many puzzles Alexa has to solve; it colors the backdrop everywhere she goes and contributes to a veritable kaleidoscope of sensory details that will only draw the audience further and further into the story itself.

Of course, as she digs into these complex cases, more players enter the game and the juicy bits of gossip she uncovers make Alexa less than popular with those who stand to lose something with each new discovery. Even without reading the other books of this series in order to get a more complete analysis of her character overall, I found Alexa's demeanor to be one that sets her up to take all of this in stride, at least for the most part. Sara E. Johnson has written a heroine who leans less on physical confrontations and more on her smarts, which do indeed come in handy when the plot picks up the pace and each of the mysteries present their own twists and obstacles.

For crime fiction and suspense lovers, as well as those who enjoy seeing the past meet the present in unexpected ways, The Hungry Bones will fit in nicely on your bookshelves alongside Lois Duncan's rapid-fire narratives, Sherlock Holmes classics, and other more recent thrillers like When She Was Me .

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.

Trigger warning: factual but dauntingly depressing historical racism regarding those who came to the US from another country to attempt to help their families during the Gold Rush.

The Hungry Bones by Sara E. Johnson is a riveting addition to the Alexa Glock Forensics Mysteries series, taking readers on a suspenseful journey through the picturesque landscapes of New Zealand and the dark alleys of unsolved crimes.

In this fifth installment, forensic odontologist Alexa Glock finds herself entangled in a web of mysteries that span over a century. The narrative cleverly intertwines the past and present, as Alexa is called upon to examine the exhumed remains of a miner from the late-19th-century gold rush era. The discovery of a hole in the skull sets off a chain of events that leads to the reopening of cold cases and the disappearance of a beloved school principal.

Sara E. Johnson's storytelling is masterful, weaving intricate plot lines with rich character development. Alexa's personal struggles, including her tumultuous relationship and professional uncertainties, add depth to the narrative, making her a relatable and compelling protagonist. The setting of New Zealand, with its unique history and cultural backdrop, provides a fresh and intriguing canvas for the unfolding drama.

The novel's strength lies in its attention to forensic detail and the methodical unraveling of each layer of the mystery. Johnson's expertise in the genre shines through, as she balances the technical aspects of forensic science with the human elements of the story. The suspense is palpable, and the pacing is just right, keeping readers hooked.

"The Hungry Bones" is a testament to Johnson's ability to craft a complex, engaging mystery that not only entertains but also educates. It's a must-read for fans of the series and newcomers alike, promising a journey full of twists, turns, and revelations that will leave you hungry for more.

"The Hungry Bones" is a well-crafted mystery that delivers on all fronts – from its well-researched forensic science to its emotionally charged character arcs. Sara E. Johnson has once again proven her mettle as a storyteller, and this book is a worthy addition to any mystery lover's collection.

“The Chinese believe that after death, the soul hovers over the grave until he is home. Those buried far from home are hungry ghosts.”

Alexa Glock, a forensic odontologist, is asked to identify the remains of a long buried Chinese gold miner, the work funded by a wealthy defendant in China. The grave is in a small town in New Zealand the country where Alexa has lived for the past year. What seems to be a simple request quickly grows more complicated. Another skeleton, a victim of a vicious murder, is located in the same area. When a local woman goes missing, Alexa is asked to help the small town police force. The case is eerily similar to a kidnapping and murder that happened twenty five years earlier. That killer was recently released from prison and is now missing and assumed to be in the area.

The Hungry Bones is my first mystery by Sara E. Johnson and it will definitely not be the last. The tragic history of Chinese gold miners blends seamlessly with a modern day police procedural and lessons in forensic sciences. All is fascinating. The racism and prejudice of the past is revealed in police reports and a man’s letters home to his mother. Johnson’s skill in characterization brings Wing Lun to life by his written words. The plot is complex and moves slowly, weaving the subplots together. 5 stars.

In Sara E. Johnson's gripping novel "The Hungry Bones," forensic odontologist Alexa Glock finds herself entangled in a century-old mystery while awaiting news of a job application in Scotland. Called to the South Island of New Zealand, Alexa assists her friend, forensic archaeologist Dr. Ana Luckenbaugh, in examining recently unearthed remains that might belong to Wing Lun, a miner who settled in Arrowtown during the gold rush.

While grappling with a breakup from her relationship with DI Bruce Horne, Alexa gets involved in a current crisis when Earl Hammer—paroled after serving 25 years for murdering a local volunteer—goes on the run. The situation intensifies with the disappearance of Arrowhead Primary School principal Eileen Bowen, who is feared to be Hammer’s latest victim. Despite DI Pattie Katakana’s insistence that the immediate focus should be on finding Bowen, Alexa’s expertise proves vital. Her meticulous forensic analysis, extending beyond dental records to fingerprints, uncovers crucial connections between Bowen’s disappearance, Mulligan’s murder, and Lun’s past.

Though the link between these cases may not be as tight as expected, Johnson’s novel provides a compelling and intricate read, combining historical intrigue with present-day suspense.

[Note: While this was an enjoyable read, I have not read the previous novels in this series and don't know if doing so would alter my enjoyment/understanding of the story.]

4.5/5 stars This book was so close to being 5 stars for me and would have been if not for it starting off pretty slowly before finally picking up steam about a third of the way into it. Once the pace picked up, I really enjoyed it. Alexa Glock is working to identify the remains of a Chinese miner for his ancestors so that they can send his remains back to China but when they unearth the skeleton they discover a hole in the back of it. Nearby they also discover another skeleton that appears to have had a violent death as well. While at the police station to inquire about opening a cold case for the 2 skeletons, the ex-husband of the local elementary school principal reports her missing. Alexa is then brought into work that case as well and the story starts to really pick up the pace at this point. And just when I thought I had predicted the ending for both cases early, there were plot twists that I definitely didn't see coming. I really enjoyed Alexa's character and will be going back to read the other four books that came before this one that I didn't know about. With that being said, the book worked perfectly fine as a standalone book and I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having read the prior ones.

I saw this book on Netgalley and thought it sounded interesting and I love most everything that Poisoned Pen Press puts out there.
Now that I finally came onto Goodreads to write my review I learned that this was the 5 book in the series which I had no previous knowledge of and didn’t read lol. So as for that I’m going to assume you can read these books not in order. I really enjoyed this story. I found the content so interesting. My brother and sister in law are archeologists, so not the same but close enough that I could draw some comparisons. Also I used to look after. Residents whose daughter was a forensic archeologist so again maybe similar. Anyways, I thought it was super cool and interesting and gave great details. I liked learning about things I hadn’t previously known. I liked that there were 3 murders going on at the same time that all ended up kind of connecting.
I enjoyed the characters and learning. More about the ones that were no longer living. It’s sad that such racism ever existed and unfortunately still exists. I’d definitely check out the whole series to see what else is going on in Alexa’s story. I just can’t believe the reasons the murders took place, people are wild.
I’d recommend this read. I’d even buy the whole series for myself.

Thanks you to both Netgalley and Poisoned Pen Press for the copy.

"The Hungry Bones," the latest in Sara E. Johnson's Alexa Glock Forensics Mysteries series, plunges readers into a thrilling adventure across New Zealand's stunning vistas and the depths of historical crimes.
In the series' fifth book, Alexa Glock, a forensic odontologist, is swept into a century-spanning mystery. The plot skillfully merges history with the present as Alexa examines a miner's exhumed remains from the 19th-century gold rush. A mysterious skull fracture triggers a series of events, reopening unsolved cases and leading to a school principal's vanishing.
Johnson's narrative prowess shines, crafting complex storylines and deep character arcs. Alexa's challenges, including a rocky relationship and career doubts, enrich the story, making her a protagonist readers can root for. New Zealand's rich history and culture add an extra layer of intrigue to the drama.
The book excels in its forensic authenticity and the meticulous deconstruction of the mystery. Johnson's command of the genre is evident, blending forensic science's technicalities with the narrative's emotional journey. The tension is tangible, and the tempo is spot-on, ensuring readers are captivated.
I enjoyed reading it and can't wait to read the next installment of this series.

Alexa Glock is a forensic expect specializing in forensic odontology. Originally from North Carolina, she has moved to New Zealand where she travels around the country consulting with police departments who request her help. A skeleton has been found in a former gold rush town that had attracted thousands of Chinese miners back in the 1800's A benefactor believes that the remains belong to her ancestor and she wants to repatriate his "hungry ghost" to China. Alexa is called in to examine the teeth and determine the origins of the skeleton. While working at the grave site near an old cemetery, another skeleton is found that clearly died violently as well. Alexa is working with the police to discover if the skeletons are connected when a local woman goes missing and she is recruited to help with that case as well. This novel is full of interesting background on the history of New Zealand's gold mining era, Chinese funerary practices, local police procedure, and tons of forensic details. All of this is woven into a page turning mystery as Alexa manages to unearth details tying together all of the cases in an unexpected way. #NetGalley #TheHungryBones

The Hungry Bones by Sara E. Johnson is an intriguing forensic mystery and I enjoyed it so much I got the audiobook aswell so as not to miss anything! I didn't realise it was the fifth in a series and firstly, it does great as a standalone, but now I am invested and I will need to get the other four books! I always seem to be late to the party, but now I am here and hungry for more cake1

Alexa Glock is an FMC I can really get behind. She is different, a forensic odontologist on a dig in NZ when what is believed to be the skeleton of a chinese miner is found, with a hole in the skull. This is bad enough, but with the family demanding repatriation, the discovery of another body in the same dig and a potential new job and life in Scotland, Alexa has her hands very, very full

The pacing is on pooint for te narrative and narration is enjoyable. Sara E. Jonson writes a strong storyline, keeping my attention and keeping me guessing. Absolutely perfect!

Great story with good twists and memorable characters.

I had no idea this was the 5th book of a series but I read it pretty well as a standalone.

I read this in a day. It’s fast-paced and the story really pulled me in, I really want to read the other instalments and meet these characters from the very beginning. One of the main things I enjoyed in this novel is the forensic bits, well explained but not boring. I even learned a thing or two since I never actually read a mystery book where the main character is an odontologist.

Alexa is a great character and her development throughout the story also very nicely thought of. She makes mistakes, she has her personal struggles and doubts about her professional life. It adds depth to the character, making her more likable and relatable.

The storytelling is fantastic. The plot is complex and the writing made me fall into the story completely. I love that its set in New Zealand, making it a nice break from all the mysteries that happen in the US and in the UK.

I was delighted to get the opportunity to read an advance copy of this book, since I loved the previous books in this series. This one is wonderful, too. The main character, Alexa Glock, an American forensic odontologist, is at a crossroads in her life both personally and professionally as she continues to work in New Zealand. I love the exotic locale, which makes me want to travel to New Zealand. In this 5th book in the series, she works on multiple cases involving both current and newly discovered mysteries. I appreciate that Alexa is a flawed character, getting in trouble for overstepping her professional assignments and having great difficulty with her romantic, professional and family relationships. She is very relatable, and I look forward to seeing what she does next. The mysteries are complex, suspenseful and intriguing. I highly recommend this book and the series, which has become one of my recent favorites.

I continue to love this character. In a way she is a fish out of water, but she loves what she does and has a reason to be involved in so many murder investigations.

I had no idea that there had been a gold rush in New Zealand in the 1880's. The historical details are nicely woven into the story.

It was also interesting that most of the Chinese men who had investigated the gold rush returned home afterward either richer or poorer. When the bones of one who did not sail on the Ghost Ship are excavated, Alexa Glock helps find the story behind the victim.

There is also a portion of the story involving how fingerprint analysis has helped to convict both guilty and innocent prisoners.

I bought a copy of this story because I know several friends to are also interested in reading another Alexa Glock mystery.

I was intrigued by the premise because of my Asian heritage. While I knew about the head tax in Canada, I did not realize other countries also had this egregious immigration policy.

I liked how the author intertwined the historical crime with the contemporary mysteries. The author added scientific background to the methodologies used by the characters which was interesting but, I felt, sometimes cumbersome. The mysteries themselves were twisty and suspenseful.

The only thing I had difficulty with was the writing style. I found it to be disjointed - not a smooth read. There was also one slip with the use of imperial measurement. All the other times measurements were used, the metric system was utilized because New Zealand is a metric country.

I received a free copy from Netgalley. this is my unbiased review.

✨ New Zealand
✨ Suspense Thriller
✨ 5th book of the series but can read standalone .
✨ Two timelines

✨ Alexa was the focus on this story. The plot was mix into two different timelines so be aware of some confusions .
Alexa is a forensic odontologist. She discover a skull sets of the chain and started to re open a cold case .
✨ apart from the story being fictional , it’ actually gives us an open eye for someone happened before. The refreshing feeling too of writing what New Zealand to offer is a good touch to remove any burden with a wide eye topic.

✨ I got to admit that the story was not my cup of tea. But I enjoy it.
It is a 5th book of a series but can read standalone.

While it would be nice to read this series in order to follow Alexa Glock’s character development, I didn’t mind skipping the previous books to read this one. It wasn’t hard to figure out what happened to her before, so this can definitely be read as a stand alone. I wasn’t the least bit surprised with the whodunnits and whydunnits — they were pretty predictable, but I did enjoy learning about fingerprint analysis and forensic odontology. The history about Chinese miners arriving in Otago, New Zealand during the gold mining era was also quite interesting. I love how the author weaved the past into the present mystery. Wing Lun’s letters to his mother were also a nice addition. If you like forensic sciences then you’ll appreciate The Hungry Bones. Thank you @poisonedpenpress for my arc. It was a fun and quick read!

Alexa is back and this time she is off to the goldmines in Australia. There is a “hungry ghost” whose relatives want to take back their remains to China, in order to give it peace. Can they find the remains? A local principal goes missing, which Alexa also has to investigate. What will they discover in the process?

Even though this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone! If you love forensics, I highly recommend this series!

Sara Johnson does a great job of immersing the reader into her stories, so it feels like you are right there along with Alexa. This makes for a great page-turning mystery that keeps you guessing until the end! I loved all the facts about New Zealand and the forensic investigation! So fascinating! A perfect book to take on your next vacation!

I honestly wanted to love this one. Truly.
It started out pretty well.
Archeology has always been a huge interest of mine. Alexa is working a dig in NZ when these bones are discovered. There are questions about whether or not the bones belonged to the Chinese miners from 100 years prior...
As the story goes on, it gets more "dis-jointed" (please excuse the pun. It's truly appropro here...)
There are multiple murder mysteries going at once along with the questionable bones and a super duper loose kinda romance subplot. This book was honestly just all over the place.
The characters were ok.
This is a good example of more is not always better.

NOT an unbiased review! I love this series about a forensic odontologist currently working for an agency in New Zealand.
Alexa came to help identify a skeleton from the era when Chinese men were brought in to work for gold, stayed to help identify another old skeleton buried nearby, got caught up in a missing person case and the hunt for a recalcitrant parolee. And then things really got complicated.
Background issues are a relationship problem and an offer to go to Scotland to gain her PhD.
I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley. Thank you!

Alexa is called in to consult on the case of a Chinese gold miner found long buried outside the cemetery wall. The title is based on an old superstition that, without his bones being returned to the proper place, the man is doomed to wander as a “hungry ghost.” As the case progresses, Alexa is asked to provide urgent assistance to find a missing woman. The entire town believes that she has been murdered by a convicted killer recently released from prison after serving his sentence – his conviction based on a single fingerprint. A nicely complex, well-constructed mystery plot.

Really enjoyed Hungry Bones by Sara E. Johnson. Alexa Glock's character is both fierce and loveable, and the book includes historical and contemporary mysteries that are suspenseful and have scientific interest. The prominence of forensic science was educational and compelling. I appreciated the setting in New Zealand and learning about the history of Chinese miners there. I plan to read other books in the Alexa Glock series. Thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and Netgalley for the eARC.
