The Inn On The Marsh: A fascinating story of scandal, betrayal and debauchery

Rate this book
The Malted Shovel, exuberant heart and soul of Hollinbury Hamlet, buzzed with talk while the ale flowed. Talk of Dumb Lukey's crazed acts and the romance between Lucinda and Joe Lee, the Thames bargee. Talk of the Crimea and the terror of Napoleon.

At the tavern, hard-headed Beatrice and her sister Dot care for their invalid father and for Lucinda, their pretty orphaned niece. The inn is their livelihood but village business is ever Beat's business too. And now some dark cloud has descended on them all . . .

What an amazing historical novel and family saga, engaging characters, lots of drama and suspense and tragedy, depicts like in 19th century England perfectly. Well depicts the misery of the working classes, the children working in factories as young as four, half naked in hellish , dangerous conditions, given little food and allowed to dies if injured. Lucky a kindly woman creates a society to care for the few who she is lucky enough to be able to help. Altruism is a beautiful things.
Uplifting ending,

I first read this book on holidays many years ago, I was young when I read it and so the story did not make sense to me fully however it was a book I could never get out of my mind. I managed to find it some years after the holiday in a second hand bookstore and read it again as a young adult and my understanding was much higher and it really did solidify my mind that this is a very, very captivating story.
