It has an older hero, group problem solving, a water world and Nessies. And pretty terrible forces working against survival.

Good Series

This was a pretty good series. The characters were very well written and well developed. The series started as a colonization story. The colonists find a human base on the planet that they just arrived on. Turns out that a Russian colony had beat them to the planet, but had already failed, so they move into the empty base and begin their new colony. They eventually unravel the mystery of why the Russian colony failed and are able to avert the same mistake. Then a second Russian ship shows up. Turns out that after they left Earth, humanity had figured out faster ships that could get there in less time. That's how the Russians arrived before them. They decide to put old hatred and mistrust aside and integrate the two groups and form one colony.
Book three starts a whole new headache for the colony when a ship arrives from Earth using Warp Drive that only took two weeks to get there (it had taken them 148 years in cryo pods originally).
Turns out that humanity had developed a nanite built implant that allowed them to communicate wirelessly. Unfortunately an AI took control and now humanity was just like the Borg, and they were determined to implant all of humanity. Resistance is futile, you will be Assimilated.
The ending is very good, with most of the cast surviving. The colonists devise a way to undo the implants and save humanity.
I really enjoyed this series, even though it has heavy Star Trek parallels. The writing is very good and I highly recommend this series.

wild wild ride

Really just one long space opera. Great characters, adventure, thrilling battles and so many hold your breath moments. In book one a colony ship sets out from earth for a new planet. They arrive 250 years later to find a water world and someone had already beat the to it. The underwater base is there, but where are the ones who built it? In book two, the base is established, but another colony ship is coming - and it’s the Russians! How is that gonna work out? And it does not end there. Read the whole set. Entertaining and exciting but maybe a little long winded at times.

Entertaining from go to whoa

A superb series of twists, amazing turn arounds, hugely engaging characters with the key players in the story being able to adapt to significantly changing situations.

I kept falling asleep each night with the iPad in my hand while reading. I was trying to stay awake to finish the books as quickly as possible because I was enjoying it so much.

So many different enemies the colonists had to struggle against and each enemy was larger than the one before.

And for those who love a little romance tinged with adventure, well, you will just need to read the books to enjoy the unfolding story.

Wonderful story telling.

Well considered

I enjoyed this story. It was a bit predictable but the author kept it internally consistent and well paced, even if the ending was Mattingly perfunctory. I would be willing to read something else by this aut.

Very enjoyable

Liked the story line but got tired of the lengthy explanations of every situation. Many could have been shorter and more to the point. It felt like you were just adding more words to make the story longer. Still a good read.
