Layla is a human.

In the Northern Forest Pack, humans are tolerated, but not exactly … loved. After her best friend is mated to the alpha, Layla doesn’t know where her place is anymore. She is aware the pack is in a lot of danger, certainly her best friend. Disaster of the Otherworld is a cult intent on destroying everyone and everything for power. She does have one little secret. Every night, she goes out to find him.

Alexander knows he shouldn’t be tempted by the little human. He is a very old vampire and he doesn’t know what it is about the young woman, but he can’t seem to get enough of her. He has extended his stay at the pack to help protect it. The cult is a danger to them all, and he is willing to offer his services to help destroy them.

Disaster of the Otherworld is after something important. The moment they harvest it, they can finally take complete power. There is only one problem—they don’t know who holds the power.

In the Northern Forest Pack there is a secret. One that has been kept for over twenty-one years. Layla is not all what she seems. Her true parents made the ultimate sacrifice to keep her safe. She is special. Will it be too late to save her?

Sam Crescent is passionate about fiction. She loves a good erotic romance and so it only made sense for her to spread her wings and start writing. She began writing in 2009 and finally got that first acceptance in 2011 by Total-E-Bound.
She loved creating new characters and delving into the worlds that she creates. When she’s not panicking about a story or arguing with a character, she can be found in her kitchen creating all kinds of havoc. Like her stories the creations in the kitchen can be just as dubious but sometimes things turn out great.

More than skin deep

Did you ever wish you were meant for greatness? What would happen if you found out you were? Well the author made it her mission to tell us all about it. She took the characters we already loved and gave them their moment to shine. I love how the romance is more of a slow burn, and the secrets that were revealed. Not to mention getting to see the bonds of friendship grow even stronger. The author took us deeper into the fairy tale to show us the evil that lives in the dark, and the magic that can be found there. But not to fear, she gave us the perfect HEA, and the possibility for so much more to come.

Layla has been a part of the Northern Forest Pack for as long as she can remember, although she is human the pack has always tolerated her, but recently things have changed. Her best friend Elle has finally been accepted as the Alpha Brandon’s true mate after he had rejected her. But with that news came the prophecy that they were all under threat, a cult known as the Disaster of the Otherworld. Suddenly the town has many different paranormal beings hanging around waiting for the threat, Alexander is a vampire who makes her feel things that she has never experienced before, she can’t stay away from him and slowly their relationship has changed making her realise that anything she had ever felt for any other man was nothing more than a crush. But how would the pack react to her loving a vampire, but there are more shocks than that in her future and it’s becoming clearer that she is more than just one human and that her reason for being could save everyone she loves. When that time comes will she survive and can she have them man she loves by her side, can she save the people she considers family or is her future only something she can imagine?

Alexander is an ancient vampire that has made decisions he has had to in the past to protect his family but times have changed, although he never saw himself helping the Northern Forrest Pack or meeting a woman he had feelings for after so long. He was never going to be a good man after all the bad and evil things he’d done and his playboy reputation had once been one he’d been proud of. That is until he meets Layla a human who should have no hold over him and although he says that he is there for the greater good the truth is he can’t leave Layla nor does he want to, it’s not until he learns who she truly is that he realises that he is hers and she is his and he is her protector and guardian against a cult that is coming for her and the ones she loves. Will Alexander be able to keep her safe or will the danger that is coming be too much for all of them to beat, is he destined to lose his mate when he only just found her?

This is a stand alone book but I really recommend that you read book one to fully understand the dynamics. It’s a short read that is spellbinding, Layla is a loyal and deep character who loves with her whole heart and Alexander is enigmatic, you will need to know how their story ends and begins. 4* read

3.5stars- LAYLA’S CHOICE is the second instalment in Sam Crescent’s contemporary, adult DISASTER OF THE OTHERWORLD paranormal, romance series. This is ancient vampire Alexander, and Layla’s story line. LAYLA’S CHOICE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story line is revealed where necessary.

Told from omniscient third person perspective LAYLA’S CHOICE focuses on the building relationship between ancient vampire Alexander, and Layla. Layla’s best friend Elle had fallen in love with the Alpha Wolf leaving Layla focusing on her lack of a love life. Having grown up around the Northern Forest Pack, Layla was all too aware of the dangers of the supernatural life but when a cult calling themselves DISASTER OF THE OTHERWORLD sets their sights on our story line heroine, ancient vampire Alexander becomes guardian, protector and lover, a position that will make him a target as well. As Layla is prepared for what is to come, she will discover the secrets of her life are hidden behind a very powerful magic.

The world building continues to focus on the coming of the cult known as the Disaster of the Otherworld, a group determined to take down the most powerful of their kind, someone with the power to destroy them all.

The relationship between Layla and Alexander begins as a friendship. Layla had always believed she would fall in love with a wolf but Layla’s vampire would be her fated mate. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters included Alpha Brandon and his mate Elle: wolf Lewis; vampire Charles; and Layla’s parents, Crazy Lizzie the witch, who is not so crazy afterall.

LAYLA’S CHOICE is a quick read; a story of power and control, secrets and lies, fate and love. The fast paced premise entertaining and intriguing; the characters are engaging but felt as though some important information is missing; the romance is seductive.

I wish Layla’s Choice was fleshed out more. There’s a great core story here about hidden power, external threats to paranormal creatures, and mysteries of the past. But it felt like the pool I was in was about 15 feet deep, but I was only allowed to swim in the shallow end. Layla and Alexander are fascinating. Layla comes across as a simple human girl, and I loved how Crescent kept revealing more to make you realize what’s happening with her. Alexander is jaded from a thousand years of life but even for someone like him, there are moments where he realizes he’s transforming.

But this is a short book at 150 or so pages, and that’s not enough time to truly build out the story. The bad guy was obvious just from the number of characters in the book, for example. Alexander and Layla are suddenly announced as mates, and everyone just seems to go along with that (when they really shouldn’t considering the relations between wolf shifters and vampires). And someone who’s literally referred to as crazy is odd until she needs to offer a lot of plot exposition, and suddenly she’s the sanest person in the room and leading things.

Because this is so short, nothing from the first book is truly explained, including the antagonist group (with the unfortunate moniker Disaster of the Otherworld, which sounds like a rock band rather than a group name) and what they’re doing. So it would be good to read The Alpha Takes a Mate first.

I enjoyed Layla’s Choice, and I recommend it. But I hope one day Crescent returns to this series and expands it. She has a great paranormal romance structured in Layla’s Choice, but it could be so much more.

Layla’s Choice by Sam Crescent is a great example of the paranormal/fated mate trope. I really enjoyed reading the story and the author maintained a great flow from beginning to end. The chemistry between Layla and Alexander was there from the start of the book and left the reader yearning to continue their story. To the point where I finished this book in less than 24 hours,.. I just couldn’t seem to put it down!

A few critiques.. Erm suggestions.. That I would give to someone picking this book up.. Read the first book!I went back and checked whether this novel could be taken as a standalone and it does say that it is. I am mixed on this as it is obvious that the reader is missing important pieces of the storyline from the previous book. I am now in the position of wanting to read the first installment, but troubled that I already know exactly how it will end. I’m currently teetering on if I will go back and read the first book.

My only complaint regarding the actual story is that I wish that the backstory was more in depth. There were several times as I was reading that I felt like I was missing important details that would have made certain scenes more meaningful. Whether this is due to a general lack of story or because I didn’t read the first book, I am not sure. Regardless of this complaint, I did really enjoy it and would be happy to continue the series.

I'm struggling with how much I disliked this book ...

Things I liked: the plot. There were honestly some great plot elements in this novel, and I can see the author has a great imagination.

Things I did not like: the plot execution and the writing.
When I was reading this book, I kept thinking this was the authors second book they'd ever written. And maybe because of that, they trusted a bad editor and their skills were not fully polished yet. I was a bit floored to see this was the tenth book they have written.

The writing was very repetitive, words (other than fillers) were used two to three times in one long run-on sentence. Some of these sentences were so long they were an entire paragraph. Not only that, but it felt almost juvenile.

In addition to clunky wordsmithing, the plot was too rushed. There were a lot of great elements and points that could have been expanded on, instead the same thing was re-told to the reader multiple times. The Character of Crazy Lizzie was nothing more than an expositional mouthpiece. Quirky when she needed to be then it was all dropped for pages of explanations.

The spicy scenes were OK. Open door starting fairly early in the book. What I didn't like though was the MMCs handling with the FMCs virginity. he basically says 'it's going to hurt no matter what, so I'll just ram in balls deep with no prep'. It was a major eye roll moment and it felt like a man trying to write a woman and doing it badly.

This continues after “Alpha Takes a Mate.” In that story Layla had a crush on Lewis, Brandon’s friend and her BFF Elle’s mate. But things aren’t the same. She realized that she only saw him as a friend. With Alexander she feels more. But would a vampire really want to have a relationship with her? Alexander has been alive for a thousand of years. He never expected to find his true mate. He doesn’t want to hurt Layla but there is something that keeps drawing them together. I have to say I love this story. We learn that Layla’s past is not what she thought. Her parents, who she really is, and what the future holds is a total surprise. You wouldn’t have thought that but WOW. And I do love that Alexander is as normal as he can be. When do you read that a vampire likes a little garlic in his food, FOOD? He actually eats. These two are great. I love their story. But the Disaster of the Otherworld is coming. There is a war and they have got to be ready. I wonder who will be next to joy our group. And Crazy Lizzie, she is a hoot.

I do love Sam Crescent books, my favourite tend to be mafia/bravata type, however I really, really enjoyed this book. I did read the first book in the series (The Alpha Takes A Mate) before Layla's Choice, you could read Layla's Choice by itself, but you have more depth and understanding of the world as a whole, as well as the main characters if you read them in order.

I loved how Layla grew and developed in the book, from being uncertain about herself and her place in the world to a strong women, who will do whatever it takes to protect her loved ones. Also, I really like Alexander, who was such a gentleman - a bit different to most of Sam's main male characters that ai have read who are often "less than gentlemen" (though, there is nothing wrong with either type, just a nice change).

Crazy Lizzie is an hilariously awesome character, loved some of her one liners / jokes. Eg
often referring to Alexander, a powerful and respected 1000 year old vampire as "fang boy".

I hope there are more books to come in this world (maybe with less than 10 years between them!).

“It was like he was looking into the eyes of an old soul.”

Well, it took ten years for us to finally get the follow-up to the first book in the series, The Alpha Takes a Mate. While I’m happy we finally know what happens next, I have to admit, this story wasn’t as good as the first one was, even though the actual writing is better. The chemistry between Layla and Alexander wasn’t as intense and even the action was somewhat flat considering what was going on. And no, I’m not discussing the details. I don’t want to spoil the story. While Layla and Alexander’s love story has the HEA ending this is clearly not the end of the series as Disaster of the Otherworld is still a threat to the world. I’m not sure who the next book will focus on, perhaps Lewis or Brandon’s beta, Drake, who was oddly only a minor character in this book. I’m sort of hoping for it to be Darcy as I think he’s actually the more interesting of Brandon’s best friends. Whoever it ends up being I just hope we don’t have to wait another ten years to find out what happens next. Three and a half stars, I’m rounding up because I really liked Alexander and because Crazy Lizzie is such a hoot!

This is a great read! Very addictive and captivating, so much so I could not put it down. This is the second story in the "Disaster of the Otherworld" series but can be enjoyed as a stand alone. There are connected characters and a connected threat. This one is about Layla, and Alexander, ancient vampire. She is young and innocent human living with the Northern Forest Pack in Grace Hill. She works at the local dinner with her best friend Elle. They were two of the few humans living with the pack. She was feeling out of sorts and alone. She began sneaking out at night to meet Alexander. He had remained in Grace Hill because he was drawn to the place and was warned the cult was still a threat. He was also drawn to Elle, she was different. He just did not know how different she was or what she would become to him. I loved the characters!!! Elle becomes determined and a force to be reckoned with. Alexander was always protective, honest and loving with Elle. Such a great paranormal read with some mystery, suspense, action, danger, passion, steam, loyalty and love. I need to back track and pick up the first one in the series to read.

MMC/FMC- Alexander and Layla

POV- 3rd person

Genre- Paranormal Romance

Sub Genre- Vampires and Shifters and Witches (oh my!)

Heat- ☄️☄️ and 1/2 ☄️. I spy with my little eye a lot of words beginning with “C”.

Series? Y

Safety: There’s no cheating, no s. violence, no OM/OW drama. There’s no cliffhanger, but the story isn’t resolved. HFN.

Triggers- Explicit Erotic Content (with related language), Violence, Occasional Dog Odor, Blood.

Tropes- Virgin Heroine, Fated Mates, BBW, Badass Heroine, The Buffy, Fangs for the Memories, The Chosen One, Hungry Like the Wolf.

What I liked- I liked the relationships between the two main characters and between the heroine and her best friend. And I loved when the heroine owned her powers.

What I didn’t- I felt that this book was insufficient to the story. This story was lightly skimmed rather than thoroughly written. The ending was kind of rushed. And it took awhile to build the heat between the MMC and FMC.

Verdict- this was not Crescent’s best work. There was a great deal of potential, but it could have been more.

this book was different and i'm not sure how i feel about it over all. while i did enjoy the story by the end, it was convoluted, a bit strange, the plot was quite twisted and complicated and at times hard to follow. there was almost too much going on in the story all at once. there wasn't a lot of in depth detail and it kind of all centered on about a week in time. the werewolf pack barely featured yet it was kind of important to the plot. this story should have been fleshed out more to enrich it. it had too much crammed into a short read, some things didn't make sense like a jaded 1000 yr old vampire and a 19 yr old naive virgin with no life experience at all.
the world building was nil, the characters weren't even well described as a whole.
there was a great core story here that had it been better written, detailed more and characters enriched could have been magnificent. but it was just mediocre in my opinion.
there wasn't even much romance per say to be honest. it just felt to me all rushed, jumbled up and thrown in the story haphazardly. a bit disappointed to be honest.

i received an arc copy from book sirens and this is my honest voluntary review.

It's been 10 L-O-N-G years awaiting for Sam Crescent to give us the next book in the Disaster of the Otherworld series. I've begged and asked and now that we've been granted the next one, I'm so sad I read it too fast!!
Layla's book was everything I could've wanted and more. It definitely didn't go the way I thought this story was going to go, especially given how the ending of the first book was with Layla having a crush on Lewis.
Who would've thought that two "human" women would be at the center of the prophecy for the Northern Pack? I use human in quotes, because once you read this book you will understand.
I love that throughout the book it is mentioned throughout that the supernatural beings all typically keep to themselves and their own groups. But the Northern Pack is slowly integrating other beings throughout to help protect everyone.
PLEASE DON'T MAKE ME WAIT ANOTHER 10 YEARS FOR THE NEXT ONE!.

This was an intriguing paranormal love story. I was enthralled immediately. There is something special about Layla. She is supposedly human but she just feels restless. Alexander who is a vampire is drawn to her. My first clue that Layla was different was when she heard Alexander’s approach at the lake. Even he was shocked. The other clue is that her parents are just weird. The truth about Layla’s background is revealed. She is afraid but not for herself. She fears for the safety of her friends and family and for Alexander who is her mate. She feels like she is a liability when in reality she is an asset. Layla has to learn to embrace her heritage and her power. She has to let go of her fears because it’s holding her back. She has to embrace her love and connection to Alexander because it will set her free.

I must say that I thoroughly loved this story. Alexander was just existing until Layla. She gave him a reason to live again. His love gave her power. Power to believe in herself and her abilities.

I haven’t read a good vampire romance in a long time. I was burned out on the vampire romance once all the movies and shows came out. I watched for the werewolf’s and witches instead. I love Sam Crescent’s other PNR books and I loved the first book in this series so I jumped at the chance to read this book. I was totally blown away and absolutely loved this book!!! The storyline is original, beautifully written, and captivating from the beginning to end. I was on the edge of my seat and biting my nails through this book. The characters were complex and had amazing chemistry.

Layla was a BAB!!! I loved her growth throughout this book. She was kind, loyal, and a firecracker. Alexander was a refreshing vampire. He was loyal, protective of Layla and deemed to keep her safe. I thought their push and pull was angsty and hot. Their chemistry was a mystery to them. I loved the twists and turns that Sam Crescent woke into this story.

Sam Crescent builds these captivating worlds that are unique: shifters, witches, humans, and more attempting to live a good life, protect their loved ones, and find their mate. ‘Layla’s Choice’ is the 2nd book in the Disaster of the Otherworld series. Alexander is a 1000 yr old vampire who is attracted to Layla who believes she’s human. She brings him back to life with her innate ability to see the man, the lover, and protector inside of him.

Sam’s rich narrative and dialogue develops this mystical tale with such grace and depth that the characters are powerful, hopeful, and passionate. The evil that lurks at the edge of their safe world will do anything to destroy Layla and take her gifts. Fighting other mystical creatures terrifies her small town and she scares some villagers even more. This book ends on a cliffhanger as more danger approaches. So darn good!

Ooh Secrets Were About To Be Revealed!

Layla wasn’t what she seemed, there were so many secrets which were about to come out into the open.

The Cult were on their way looking for a specific power but no-one knew what this power was!

Alexander, an old Vampire had stayed behind to look over the pack and protect it but he cannot get Layla out of his mind and every night they meet, he keeps telling himself it will be the last.

Layla keeps sneaking off to meet Alexander, for some reason she cannot resist meeting him, there was something about him that kept her going back and the suppressed passion she had for him kept getting stronger.

An action packed, page-turning steamy read with lots of surprises along the way, a credit to Ms Crescent’s style of writing.

Recommended Read!.

'Layla's Choice' is a story of Layla, a "human" and Alexander, a 1,000-year-old vampire. She lives in the Northern Forest Pack and gets along with the residents of the pack. Alexander and Layla are attracted to one another and it's interesting to see how their relationship changes beyond friendship. Alexander tries to protect her from the evil Disaster of the Otherworld that was introduced in the first book of the series.

Layla and Alexander discover that she is not all that she seems and has believed her entire life and that puts her on the radar of some evil characters. Her strength of character and belief in herself evolves over time until she discovers, with Alexander's support, all that she is and can be.

WOW! I believe this is the best book I have read by Crescent. It grabbed my attention at the begging and held it until the very end. It is full of action and is fast paced. A threat from the Disaster of the Otherworld has brought about powers that have laid dormant in Layla for years and she has now become a force to be reckoned with. Alexander, a vampire is her mate and she will do everything in her power to protect him, her friends and the pack. It’s an excellent story that I absolutely loved. There are other characters who add greatly to the story and I especially liked Crazy Lizzie. This is a story that is definitely worth reading. I sincerely hope there is another story coming that ties in with this one.

Layla, a human who grew up amongst those in the Northern Forest Pack, with her best friend Elle, who is mated to the alpha of the pack, wonders if that type of happiness is out there her. Alexander a 1000 year old vampire is intrigued by Layla and it isn’t long before she finds herself seeking him out. However, there is something dark looming on the horizon a cult greedy for ultimate power and are willing to destroy anyone or anything in the way to obtaining that. While trying to help figure everything out and how best to protect the pack it’s discovered that Layla is not only human but very powerful and the cult is out to get her.

This was an amazing book, I absolutely could not put it down.

I was well aware Crescent could write excellent dark romance novels, but this was the first paranormal novel that I’ve read by this author. She must have used Alexander’s power of “enthrallment” to mesmerize us into enjoying this novel. Lol 😂. This is a fabulous love story between a thousand year old vampire and his fated human mate. The author inserts readers into this paranormal world effortlessly filled with wolf shifters, gargoyles, witches, vampires, wraiths, warlocks, humans, and an immortal human. The novella is exciting, action packed, intriguing and very sensual. No spoiler alerts needed. Readers need no enticements to enjoy this romance between vampire Alexander and the immortal human, Layla. I have received an ARC from BookSirens and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.

I would recommend to go back and read the first book in the series -The Alpha takes a mate - as this will give you a backstory as to why the main characters are there. You don’t have to, but it makes reading this book so much better.
Layla wants to find the one but she never expected to find that in Alexander.
Layla grows in this book from being hesitant to being more self assured. All she need is the backing that confidence bring from her mate. It was great to see her growth and change. Alexander is a 1000 year old vampire who was the perfect gentleman.
There were some funny moments, mostly from Crazy Lizzie and they made me chuckle.
This book was slightly different from her normal character but was still just as good.
I hope there is more to come in this series as I have enjoyed both books so far.

She is a distraction that proves to be too powerful for him

Layla's Choice is the second book in the Disaster of the Otherworld series. I had not read the first book, The Alpha Takes a Mate, as it is from ten years ago and before I discovered this author. So I was not sure what to expect with this book. The story is about Layla and Alexander. He is a very old vampire who finds himself wanting the beautiful Layla, a human. There are really two stories in this book, the romance between Layla and Alexander, and the threat to the pack by the cult, and finding out just what they want.
I enjoyed this book but realized that I most likely should have read the first book, as there were some things that I think I did not pick up on because of this. But overall it was an entertaining story with nice characters who have some heat.

Layla is a human woman whose parents petioned a wolf pack to be allowed to live on pack land. Alexander is an old vampire who came to help the pack with a problem and has stayed on for several reasons. One of them is Layla and the other is a prophesied attack by the cult known as Disaster of the Underworld. It turns out that there are things Layla doesn't know about herself and she and the vampire she desires are an important part of whether her pack survives.

As I didn't read the first book in the series, it took a few chapters to figure it all out. The story is fairly simplistic once you get the background stuff straight. None of the characters are all that deep, so I was drawn into the story but not the people. I think it could use a little more character development, but that's just me.

I was given an advanced copy of this book by the author. My review is voluntary.

Unexpected life turns…

Alexander and Layla’s story had surprises, action and (of course) romance. What could a human and a vampire have in common? Other than mutual attraction? Well, turns out quite a bit as Layla’s true past comes to light and she – along with everyone she loves – has to adjust. Layla took it pretty well, considering, and I admired how she not only accepted the truth but rose to meet all the challenges it brought her. Nothing like a bit of a power struggle with the fate of humankind in the balance to spice up a romance!

This was a good paranormal read where the romance didn’t get overshadowed in the least. A good addition to the series – look forward to more.

*I happily reviewed this story

Paranormal Romance

Layla’s best friend is a part of the Northern Forest Pack since she is mated to the alpha. Layla is welcome in the pack but because she’s human, it’s not the same as if she was a shifter. Now that her best friend is busy being mated, she’s lonely and looking for a connection. She finds that with Alexander.

Alexander is a vampire and he’s helping to protect the pack. Layla is the ultimate distraction and he shouldn’t want her but he does.

This was a good paranormal romance with good world building. There’s a full plot within this paranormal world as well as romance. Very enjoyable.

This is book 2 in a series; I didn’t read book 1. I liked the premise of the book, and I thought it had potential. I liked that it was in multiple POVs, but it often wasn’t clear whose POV we were following. The pacing was uneven — we spent a lot of time in the beginning and middle only to have everything wrapped nicely in a short time.

The writing flow was also interesting. There were moments when I thought the prose flowed nicely, the writing read quite juvenile. Which is incredibly jarring when juxtaposed against swearing and smexy times. Had I not known this writer has written a couple of dozen books, I would have thought this was a sophomore attempt.

Layla's Choice is a phenomenal paranormal packed love story. It is the second book in the disaster of the Other World series. After seeing Brandon and Elle get theirs, it is awesome to see Alexander and Layla come to their well deserved happily ever after. The supernatural paranormal action and the characters made the story compelling and engaging.

With wonderful characters, a storyline wrought with drama, paranormal action, secrets reveled, twists, betrayal, and the knowledge that the cult is not done, Layla's Choice is an entertaining book that I could not put down. I eagerly await the next book in the series!

Werewolves, Witches, Vampires, & humans. What can go wrong you ask?

This is book two in the Disaster of the Otherworld series. Book one should be read first because this one gives no explanation about who is who and it's very confusing. There's romance, a crazy witch, humans with hangups, werewolves & Layla. You understand early that Layla isn't exactly human, but they don't realize until later what she is. It was an interesting tale and had either I read the first book or had the author quickly explained who's who it would have been a bit easier to read. The story was ok but very slow until the end.
