Leonora Romilly was murdered. The catch? She didn’t stay dead.
Instead, she finds herself alive-ish and swept away to Ashvale to learn how to be a fully-functioning, albeit undead, member of society. At Ashvale, the blood runs free and the sexual tension never sleeps, but under the surface, something much more sinister lurks. With her would-be murderer still roaming free, a new-found love, and her lost memories on the line, can Leonora survive Ashvale with both her head and her heart intact?
From bestselling romance author Jade Church comes a deliciously bloody vampire romance. The Vampire's Thrall is book one in the Ashvale duology and is perfect for fans of The Originals and Vampire Academy. If you love morally grey FMCs, mystery and spice, then click to buy now!
Jade Church is putting the ‘O’ in romance with her high-heat and swoony romance books. Jade currently lives in the U.K. and when she’s not cuddling her cats or writing, she spends the majority of her time reading and binge re-watching The Vampire Diaries.
I received this complimentary ARC, courtesy of Jade Church, in exchange for an honest review.
This is probably the best book Jade’s written yet.
The vampiric world building was so good and rather reminiscent of The Vampire Academy. Setting it in a gothic castle of the undead was a brilliant bloody (literally)🩸choice. I want to attend a school for vampires now!
Leonora was a compelling protagonist and Hayes a broody hero, but Rowan was my favourite overall.
Sexy vampire? ☑️ Loves literature? ☑️ Dark haired? ☑️ Pure hearted? ☑️
The ending broke my heart (Jade, how dare you?), but I genuinely cannot wait for book two! ♥️
Sorry 😬
I received an ARC of this book, and here are my actual thoughts:
This would have been 5 stars, but for me the beginning was a little hurried and I didn’t want a cliffhanger.
It’s like a steamier Vampire Academy mixed with a little something extra. It’s a bit of a slow burn, but you don’t mind as much because there’s so much horniness roaming around.
It’s full of intrigue and sexy denial, the plot is interesting, and that’s why I was so mad at the cliffhanger. I cannot wait a whole year to find out what happens. The SECRETS.
My one hate of this story: the woman main character has a moth tattoo and I don’t fuck with moths.
Great story if you're a fan of the vampire diaries and Vampire academy than this is definitely the book to read. But maybe this will be the 18+ version.
I really enjoyed the plot and the characters, it has been quite some time since I read something with Enemies to lovers trope and this book delivered on that part.
Though, I have to be frank, while I enjoyed reading it and there wasn't a single time where I felt bored, I felt like there were somethings missing. Like some world building and some backstories. I still don't understand the difference between humans and vampires and how does one have a human life than vampire one, it got confusing for me.
The smut though... damn. I never expected whatever that happened between Hayes and Rowan. I actually was gobsmacked from that one scene when Leonora entered his room. It's like a love triangle but not a love triangle. I love it
It’s pitched as Vampire Dairies meets Zodiac Academy - I haven’t read the latter but know of it. And I think this is a pretty spot on description.
Initially, I was confused, but then I realised that was the point as we’re following our FMC having amnesia, so if she’s confused, we would be too. I like the mystery that was the overall story arch, that was great.
The vampires work a lot differently in this universe, and it took me a while to figure it out, but once I did, it made sense and it’s an interesting spin on a creature we’re all very familiar with.
I also enjoyed the magic system, and that there were mages. I hope we get to explore that more in book 2.
My only little gripe is that the FMC is supposed to have a unique ability but for some reason it only works on 1 person, but is described as generic - I’m trying to be vague so as not to spoil the book. This bugged me, but the last 40 pages made me forget all of that!
I liked our FMC a lot, she is quite pragmatic and doesn’t fall apart in a heaping crying mess, but rather gets angry - which is far more productive and lethal!
ARC REVIEW This was brilliant, i love when there are different types of vampires. Plus hidden society. Leonora is gorgeously plus size but its not her whole personality. I love the development of her friendships "i hated you at first" are the best kind of friendships. I cannot wait for the sequel! What a cliffhanger!
Ok I think I’ve finally cured my vampire fixation. I was kind of scraping the barrel with this one. Ok well it’s not that bad I suppose, I’m just not the target audience for this. I was drawn in by the “for those that like their vampires with the moral switch off” tagline, but I think I was really expecting something more adult. It’s stuck somewhere between melodramatic YA Netflix show and horny wattpad fanfic. The most adult it gets is a bit of gore and lots of people in their early twenties being horny at each other. I think I was expecting something with a little more grit and conflict, but that’s not what this is. If you like YA vampire themed fanfic with lots of descriptions about what the FMC wears, then you could do worse I guess
This was 𝘀𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝘂𝗻! 😄 it had so many of my fabourite tropes and then you add in vampires and you get this beauty!
Leonora and Hayes are our push and pull couple of the story. They love each other but love to hate each other more - this is where the sparks fly people!
Leonora is a fantastic plus sized representation in this book and I love her growth throughout. Whilst her size isn't a vocal point of the storyline I really liked that it was mentioned. Hayes puts the B in LGBTQ+ and I'm 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗜𝗧!!!
I'm pretty mad that I read it so quickly and that it ended on that cliffhanger. How could you Jade?! How could you! 😵 I'm so excited for book two in this series.
Think of Vampire Academy and Vampire Diaries mixed into one, and this book is what you get.
The story begins right away, throwing us right into the paranormal world and action as we learn as the main character Leonora does. I absolutely adored the plus size rep, and the fact she has full tattoo sleeves, I feel like that's something that's less common in romance books, so I really appreciated the rep. Leonora is very confident, dominant and morally grey. She's a total badass with an attitude.
The world building was a little overwhelming at times due to lots of info being given in a short time, but by the end I was pretty confident with the magic system and world. The setting of Ashvale being this dark but modern castle was really cool, and though we don't really get to see many more places, I still liked the atmosphere.
The characters were fairly well developed, and I really enjoyed the friendships. Speaking off, Emerson is so sweet and strong, and I really am hoping she gets her own spin off book or something. The enemies to lovers romance was done well, and I particularly liked that Hayes is bi. Their bond was one of my favourite tropes, and the spice scenes were really well written, especially that hottt ball scene.
Plot wise, it's fast paced but maybe predicable for some? I did guess a lot of the twists and revelations, however there were some things that surprised me too. The ending left off on a massive cliffhanger and I can't wait to see what happens next, especially between Leonora and Hayes!
When I tell you my jaw dropped bitch what the fuck?! YOU CANT LEAVE IT LIKE THAT HELLO?!?! WHAT THE SHIT??? I NEED BOOK TWO FUCKING RIGHT NOW HELLOOOO ANYONE?!?
The whole story was a lot….a lot of info to process blah blah. The writing was fine too even tho sometimes I felt like it was meh. I was extremely intrigued by the start but then the drama and all it kept going.
The last parts? I lost it I lost my shit. THIS IS NOT HOW I WANT THIS TO END HELLO NEXT BOOK?!
The couple is nice and all but idk I didn’t feel the chemistry forming tbh….like all of a sudden they are together and they fuck and leave fuck leave fuck leave be mean be nice drink blood leave and then all of a sudden he calls her ‘love’ and I’m like ok? But anyway
The parts where we find out stuff ……..I didn’t even think that far. Slay I guess ? Whatever.
It felt a little like teen vamp drama but fuck I need book 2 rn
Tropes: mate bonds, vampirism/blood sucking, mind reading, magical abilities, elemental magic, shapeshifting, hidden identity/hidden royalty, hate to love, betrayal, he takes care of her, touch her/him and die, chosen one, jealousy / “mine”
What I loved: perfect for TVD fans, fast paced, tight pacing, excellent characters, divine spice, spice arrives early but makes sense given the plot, mystery element was well done
Didn’t like: nothing - easy 5+ star read that I finished in under a day

I can't believe the next book isn't out yet! I need it!
I loved the beginning of this book, with a girl waking up in a graveyard not knowing how she got there or who she is. As it progresses and we learn more about the vampire society, it also gets a bit steamy. But there's very little feeling involved. Soon, there are murder mysteries to solve, and the ball coming up, and I wish there was more of a build up. But all in all, this book was better than expected, as I got it for free on stuff your Kindle day.
Okay I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this one, it's been a long time since I read a vampire book that I'd enjoy.
Leonora is a very inconsistent character though (The ending???) and Hayes seems to have had an insta-love moment at some point. But still very enjoyable, even though I'm still confused with the lore, A LOT. But cute dark academia with some murder mystery thrown in.
omg how the turn tables!!! i pretty much screamed my way through the last chapter- fucking hell what a ride! i want to sob and cry and scream and throw up all at the same time! i was so sure i knew what was going on but fucking hell that last bloody chapter!! lort knows i’m immediately starting book 2 as soon as i hit post on this review
I needed a little more world building before just jumping completely into everything and trying to play catch up as information was just casually mentioned but not explained. But I still enjoyed the romance/flirting between the two main characters.
The book was fine, the ending is crazy but the book as a whole does make me want to read the 2nd book enough to read it now. It will probably get lost in my tbr
WOW, it's been a while since I've come across a unique vampire romantasy that I've loved this much! This book was gritty, interesting, and brought the tension and the SPICE. I read this in one day and I will be IMMEDIATELY reading the next book!
I received an ARC from Jade Church for an honest review of Ashvale: The vampires thrall.
THE ENDING?! EXCUSE ME??? I literally just finished this in one sitting, not paying attention to the amount of pages left and- and.. it just ended.
This was such a fun vampire-paranormal romance with a curvy, tatted, stubborn FMC and an LGBTQ- friendly *wink-wonk* low-key golden retriever vampire?? I. Need. More.
Had me gripped by the throat from beginning to end with horny vampires, secrets and biting. Sooooo much biting.
I love the way Jade Church writes and the length of the books are perfect (for me) to read in one sitting or two evenings.
Another jewel in the rough courtesy of Stuff Your Kindle Day. To sum it up: The story itself was good, the main character was a breath of fresh air in a world of goody-two-shoes heroines and the world-building left me wanting more. This book could have been great...
Or, maybe not great... But a solid 3 stars at least, if it hadn't been for the sloppy editing. And when I say sloppy, I mean Sloppy with a capital S. Give me a couple of hours and I could easily fix most of the issues. I mean swapped letters, missing spaces, unedited pacing, phrases that made no sense, etc... Nothing devastating, but all-in-all distracting and off-putting (particularly the first page, almost dropped it then and there!). In the beginning, I was taking notes but then, it was either to continue reading (letting things slide) or drop it. And the story was quite interesting! So I had to toughen up and let it go.
So, leaving the editing aside (but really, who releases a book without a couple of edits and several ARC readers?), the story was quite interesting and Leonora as the main character was great.
She is kind of like a feminine Damon with a sense of justice and no squeamishness or guilt when it comes to killing (like really, none, go girl!). She is unconflicted by her new state of being, she revels in her powers and is not afraid to use them, and she is delightfully not shy about her desires (bloody or horizontal!).
Perhaps during the first stages, she came off as a bit convoluted and whiny. I would have maybe done the first chapters from Hayes's POV or presented her differently. Mainly because amnesia and confusion are quite hard to convey realistically, particularly as an introduction to a character that readers don't yet know or care about, and some interactions or phrases during those first pages left me scratching my head. I was unsure if I was reading it right or even understanding the situation. But by the end of the book, I was Team Leah through and through, and things had become considerably clear.
The general plot has a couple of issues, but most of these are personal tastes. I disliked the fact that Leonora was so powerful and above everyone else's power level from the get-go. Don't mistake me, I am all for her embracing her vampire powers and being powerful but it was too much, too soon, and with very little effort on her part. It felt meaningless and empty.
I also disliked how abrupt some interactions were. Like her instant friendship with Novalie after they clashed during class or how the vampire teachers were so irrelevant and forgettable.
Finally, I would have wished for more world-building. Make the sanctuary have a history, a little decor in those empty hallways, and interesting teachers. Maybe even add a couple of quirky old vampires that could show Leonora the ropes or tell her interesting and outlandish tidbits like "Oh, yeah, remember that historical figure, yeah, that was my vampire uncle". Stuff like that would make it seem like the world isn't comprised of 5 people. Otherwise, it ends up feeling empty and unlived.
Still, this had so much potential! I am hoping the author improves on it as the series develops. Definitely will continue reading.
My only problem is… well, one of them… is that she remembers nothing about her life; but knows how “girls work”.
Novalie (a new vampire friend) wanted Hayes, and Leonora was there “you want him taken him.” Nods. Now cool with each other.
It’s the same with talking, walking, maths etc it’s a plot hole that I never really understand d when someone doesn’t remember anything but remembers all this… maybe I’m thinking too much into it….
Oh. Another thing… Things seem to be glossed over: “I’m your dad.” “Alright. Cool. So these dead vampires…?”
Can authors stop shoving information at us and not dealing with it appropriately? If it’s important to tell us, then deal with it accordingly!
Don’t get me wrong, it’s an awesome story. Awesome idea. Just a little bit…rushed? A lot could have been explained in a bit more depth, but maybe it will be in book two (hopefully out end of 2023, or early 2024).
We follow Leonora as she comes to terms with her own death, knowing someone murdered her, being a vampire, blood bonding with someone… just trying to survive really in this new-but-old life.
Will I be reading book two? Yes. I need to know the rest of the story! I need to know Hayes story tbh!!
it’s been awhile since i’ve read any sort of vampire book, and this did NOT disappoint! in this story, jade church takes the supernatural and school/academy tropes and merges them into a fantastic novel of compelling world-building, fun characters, thrilling mystery and steamy romance!
the main relationship is a little slow burn, but i’m enjoying how it’s simmering! i feel there’s still a long way to go with these characters and i am eagerly anticipating how this will develop in the next book!
the school setting itself is not dissimilar from other novels with the same trope, but jade takes the idea of a vampire training school and turns it into something of real character. leonora is a really active protagonist, and we start to sympathise to her cause from very early on in the book. she’s a fish out of water in this brand new environment, fighting to prove she’s something in a world where she can’t even truly remember who she is. i’m often not a fan of the ‘amnesia’ trope, but i do really feel it works well here.
the other students within the school felt slightly cliché to me (especially the girl bully who soon becomes an ally), but it wasn’t necessarily bad to read. i liked that leonora became something of a leader during her so-far short time at the school, really stepping up to help her fellow students when the teachers were failing them.
i’m intrigued to see where the supernatural ‘lore’ in this book will go, as there’s a lot of groundwork and foreshadowing that has been laid (this is a spoiler free review, but you’ll understand what i mean when you read it!). i liked the addition of other supernatural elements other than vampires (like magic and werewolves, which are always a bonus when writing in this specific genre).
overall, i really enjoyed this book and i am impatiently awaiting the sequel!!
SOMEONE TELL ME WHY I WANT TO BE A VAMPIRE NOW?? okay i’ll tell you why. Because Jade Church JUST released the most SHEET GRIPPING VAMPIRE PARANORMAL ROMANCE TODAY. I wasn’t sure if I was a huge paranormal fantasy reader BUT I GUESS THIS BOOK CLEARS THAT UP. I AM HOOKEDDD *throws laptop but in a good way*
We all love morally grey men right BUT WHEN THE WOMAN IS EVEN MORE MORALLY GREY?? I LOVE IT and that’s exactly what Leonora is after waking up with just her fangs and no recollection of her life before. While she goes through a whole amnesia recovery journey, do you know who else was there?? My main man Hayes, he had me ovulating by chapter 2. The forced proximity in this book was done through bonding (involuntary marriage of convenience) and I honestly loved that?? And you know what that means?? TELEPATHY.
I LOVED whenever Hayes heard her grumpy thoughts and had the SMUGGEST look on his face. I cannot tell you the amount of times I was ready to strip and use his body as my pole. The JEALOUSY and the ANGST *screech* ladies when I tell you I DID MMA FIGHTING WITH MY BLANKET BECAUSE I WAS KICKINGG MY FEET-
okay look if you want some knee shaking, feral vampire smut, the next stop on your TBR is Ashvale. I will need this paperback on my shelf to complete the ritual of manifesting Hayes to come get me too.
I am Laura from DuoBookshelf and I APPROVE THIS BOOK 🗣️🗣️🗣️RUN EVERYONE, RUN TO YOUR KINDLES 🤸RUN INTO THE ARMS OF HAYES AND HIS OBSESSION WITH US BEING VIOLENT 🛏️🤸
This was spiralling out of control and I couldn't bring myself to care.
This was a really fun, fast-paced vampire romance from Jade! The beginning got rolling immediately as Leonora met her fate of truth death. Being found by Hayes, the mysterious and sexy blonde vamp, she’s thrust into a vampire academy and attempting to acclimate to her new life with minimal memories and so many secrets surrounding her! The push and pull, I hate you but I want you, nature of hers and Hayes relationship was really great and I thought they had good tension and chemistry! There is so many mysteries surrounding Hayes and Leonora’s origins, I definitely cannot wait to find out more after that cliffhanger!
I got this book during stuff your kindle day since I wanted to give a lot of new books a chance in 2024. This was the first I read since I love a good vampire story (rattie at heart).
Overall, I liked the beginning of the book and where everything was going, but this had to be one of the most rushed books I have ever read. I was reading and I felt like I had missed information or parts of the story (i do tend to skim read when I get excited and want to finish a book) so I went back and realized that things just didn't seem to connect like they should have. Everything for me started to go downhill when Leonora suddenly befriended Novalee like it was no big deal.
I feel like delving into the memory retrieval could've helped as well as maybe some more just informational/world building things. The last half of the book felt rushed with the debut and all the murders happening with very little information about each of them and were brushed over. Granted that was part of the story line that Elowen didn't seem to care, but they also just kept going with their lives and 'were careful'.
Spice wasn't super descriptive like I typically enjoy, but was alright. Still debating Id I will be reading the sequel when it is released.

This was a refreshing vampire book, I couldn’t stop reading it!
What happens when you die and come back again alive-ish but with no memory of the person you were before?
Well let’s just say there’s a lot to learn but a lot comes naturally for Leonora finding herself as a new member of society at Ashvale. She becomes pretty familiar with her new life very quickly as things unravel about her lineage and the powers she wields, making some mess along the way.
With some found family, a mystery of her own murder to solve and a blood-bond she definitely didn’t ask for, she’s has a busy and somewhat steamy start to her new life.
I’m curious to find out what happens with her in the sequel to this book, will she be consumed by what she’s done and what she now knows or will there be a way back for her?
"You have the strangest look on your face right now," Novalie said thoughtfully and I smiled, letting more than a hint of fang show.
"Just thinking about burning the world down."
What a ride! This book was a fast paced, mysterious read full of hot, deadly vampires. Need I say more? 🦇
I really liked the academy setting of this book, very dark academia esque, and the characters were very intriguing as well! I loved the dynamic between Novalie, Emerson, and Leonora, it was so cute! And the heat between Hayes and Leonora was off the charts!
I rated this one a bit lower than I thought I would because I felt like I was missing so much information that I was left pretty confused, uncomfortablely often. I think with more depth and bakground/world building, this book would have been much better.
That said, it was still quite enjoyable and I would recommend it if you want a quick, supernatural read with a bit of a bite 😉🧛🦇
What a perfect way to start fall reading 😍 this was a super fun, quick, action packed and steamy read with vampires, an “academia” feel, and a very cool magic system. From page one, I was completely sucked in and constantly guessing.
This book has a very fast pace, but still does a great job of explaining the magic and world (although I do still have the feeling that there’s lots left to learn!). The tension is high, and the balance of romance, steam, mystery and magic was really wonderful. The vampire system with elemental magic and other unique powers, and the hierarchy of undead and living vampires was so cool and unique, and I can’t wait for the next book to come out so to hopefully learn more about Lenora’s bloodline and the role of the vampire royals. There’s just a ton to love here, and I’d definitely recommend for my fellow fantasy romance friends who are looking for something to kick start their 🍂fall vibes🍂 reading!
thank you so much to Jade Church for sending me an advanced copy of this book. 🫶🏻 i’m forever grateful.
this was my very first vampire romance book, and wow i didn’t expect it to be so fun, bloody, intense, and super hot.
i really loved the writing, characters, and the plots. ughh i couldn’t love Jade Church more. she just never disappoints me <3
the way Hayes called Leonora “love” had me melting 🫠 and the way he protected her…. they literally were made for each other ughh i loved them so much 🥹
the only reason i didn’t give it a 5 star was because it took me a while to get into this book, but once it hit me, I HAD A REALLY GREAT TIME READING IT.
i am eager to read more books of hers, and if you’re looking for a vampire smut, Ashvale is a perfect book to sink your teeth into 😉
This is an ode to the vampire diaries if I ever read one. This book was 🤌🏼✨ perfect! From the dedication to every single reference to TVD. I was living my best Elena with her humanity off era in this book, so much Damon and Klaus energy ✨🖤 We have our FMC Lenora who is murdered, but that’s how it starts, as she didn’t stay dead… enter our MMC who takes her into this kind of school for vampires where she gets to figure out who and what she is… there is good banter, excellent tension, a mystery, and just so much fun… this book was everything! Thank you Jade Church for this amazing ARC version of Ashvale ✨🖤
Read if you like: 🖤 The Vampire Diaries (humanity off version) 🖤 The Originals (Klaus) 🖤 Enemies to lovers 🖤 Forced proximity 🖤 Fated mates 🖤 Morally grey characters 🖤 Found family 🖤 Badass and sassy FMC 🖤 A good mystery
The beginning immediately made me curious. The world-building is amazing. I really love all the details in the description of the castle and how it works there. It has vibes of Vampire Academy. I love how the trope forced proximity is carried out. Leonora and Hayes have first a true hate/love relationship. The tension is big. I also enjoyed all the other tropes that are really well written. Their is mystery around the death of Leonora. Little by little you find out more about what happened. I don't like the cliffhanger. The reason for that is that I have to know what happens next.
