Unfortunately this is bordering on a one star review. I've no idea what the extended novel is/was like but I guessed quite early on was what really happening and everything else just looked like the protagonist's illegal snooping, dramatics, and quite frankly unhinged activity. If THAT had been addressed at the end of the book instead of the 'the author kills herself' bit that made no sense at all (Kind of like Shakespeare killing all the characters off, some from 'happiness', which I have always thought of as 'I don't know how to end this so let's just kill the person off' bad writing). I hope that the novel that came out of this had a better and more intriguing ending.
I do find it hilarious that I read this just after reading books by two Margarets, one being Margaret Atwood's poems about/involving Susanna Moodie, who is mentioned in this book.
I didn't hate this book but I didn't like it either. A very low two stars...
