This one has been sitting on my shelf a while (along with a "few" other photography books ;) ) and I finally got around to it. It is meant mostly for a beginner/ mom photographer, maybe even someone who uses her phone but wants to learn more about thinking creatively and taking better photos. For me, there is a certain nostalgia to it; I followed The Shutter Sisters when my daughter was younger and I was just starting out with my camera. I loved that blog, and this is mostly along the lines of the blog. I have also taken one of Tracey's classes and I really enjoyed her thought process, enthusiasm and interaction with the community.
The shutter sisters are a group of women photographers who contribute to a photography blog site. Each part of the book is written by a different woman photographer. Each section discusses an aspect of photography and the subjects people photograph. Sometimes the advice is technical and sometimes the discussion is philosophical. In either case it gets you to think about your own photography and what you are trying to do. I found the book helpful and the view points and discussion diverse enough to keep me interested throughout the book. It would be interesting to be a part of group such as this and explore the creative side of photography more. I'd recommend the book to any photographer who wants to explore his art.
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that is meant mostly for the amateur. It is really about bringing light, detail and even documentation to your everyday photography. This isn't technically perfect photography that is sharp and National Geographic worthy. It's really the opposite. There's a lot of good stuff here for someone who just wants to document their children growing up, their friendships or just a simple walk in the woods. It's a series of blog posts from the Shutter Sisters who, sadly, are no longer blogging. It's inexpensive on Amazon if you buy it used and is worth buying.
This book, packed with beautiful and quirky photos by 10 women is very well organized. Each of its 10 sections -- Horizons, Portraiture, Nature, Spaces, Childhood, Stillness, Documentary, Creatures, Table, and Togetherness -- takes the reader from an essay by the photographer through the same topics: Introduction, Approach, Perspective, Composition, Lighting, Details, and Processing. The emphasis is on the analysis of "expressive" aspects of photography, but there is some technical info as well, and suggested assignments.
