Unfortunately, this is an example of how an ensemble cast in a series can put too much strain on the plot. There were so many povs and so many different plot segments that the book felt very disjointed. I thought this would mainly revolve around Delphine considering she's on the cover but it felt like she was only the focus for 25% of the book spread out over 500 pages. A lot of time was spent on Amina, who was barely a character in the first book, and while I enjoyed her friends (love the trans and enby rep!) that were introduced, it felt like too much of the story focused on her instead of the characters we've come to know in the first book.

And speaking of characters, Cass and Hannah (mainly Hannah) still feel utterly useless to the story. I think they should have been scrapped in editing. They're just there for most of the book, either getting captured or hurt. I thought Hannah would become important to bring back Ezra but didn't.

I'm still mad that Ezra died instead of Gideon because Ezra was a much more interesting character out of the two and I liked him so much more than Gideon. And him letting Calla go so effortlessly was a let down too, very anticlimactic.

A lot of stuff from the first book still bothered me in this one, so I think I might drop the series here. We'll see how I feel whenever the next book is released.

Got an arc from work

This one felt a lot more intense than the first and a little more muddled (there were a bunch of new characters introduced whose 3rd person povs we got) but this was enjoyable nonetheless and I’m very excited to see how this wraps up. Honestly this series needs more love and having finished the second book now I stand by that!

A Reckless Oath is the sequel to Kaylie Smith's 2023-YA Fantasy release, A Ruinous Fate.

I had so much fun with that 1st-book, becoming extremely invested in the characters. I couldn't wait to find out where the story was going after the jaw-dropping conclusion.

This story drops you right back, smack dab into the middle of this vast and complex world. The author doesn't provide much of a refresher regarding the events of the 1st-book, so you better come prepared.

Sadly, I wasn't prepared. It had been about 13-months since I read A Ruinous Fate, and while I did remember the gist of the story, a lot of the finer details were lost to time.

Because of that, it did take me a little while to find my bearings with this one.

The Heartless Fates series features lots of different magical beings, including Witches, Valkyries and Sirens. There's a magic system that I'm still not 100% clear on, and there's a fairly large cast of characters.

Somehow though, it all works. The characters are endearing, the world is vast and interesting, as is the overarching plot. Even though I'm slightly confused half the time, I still really enjoy these books.

It's got a magical-Epic Fantasy feel that's just addicting.

After the events of the first book, our main cast of characters has been torn apart. This book features each of them trying to pick up the pieces of their lives and progress forward in preparation for the oncoming war.

It's like a game of chess, each character is a piece, moving step-by-step across the board, calculating, but are they all still on the same side?

Out of all the different perspectives, I think I loved Delphine's the most. She's a Siren and has returned to her home for the first time after an extended absence.

I found the Siren community to be fascinating. Their politics, interactions, etc., I almost wish that whole perspective could have been its own book.

I did still really enjoy Calla's perspective though, as well. Amina in the land of the Valkyrie's was also exciting. Together though, at times, with the back-and-forth, it did feel a little jarring.

There's new revelations in this book that definitely help to progress the overall plot of the series. Relationships have developed further and the intensity has increased. You can feel something building. War is imminent.

Overall, while I found this to be a bit chaotic and occasionally hard to follow, I still am really, really enjoying these characters and this world.

I'm excited to see where it goes next.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Disney Hyperion, for providing me with a copy to read and review.

I truly enjoy Kaylie Smith's writing and will continue picking these books up!

Thank you to the author!! and publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

OH MY GOD! A reckless oath picks up right where ARF left of and let’s just say it’s a whirlwind of emotions!

The readers get so much information on this wonderful and well-crafted world and all the beloved (and some less well liked) characters in this book. Not only are we rewarded with so many details on the backstory of certain characters, but also get lots of more romantic tension, more friendships, new characters (I love my stabby girl Sabine), new enemies, new magical creatures and lots of fuel for theories.

This sequel perfectly picks up all the great details and dynamics of book one while further developing the characters and plot lines and giving us so much to look forward to for book three. I NEED IT RN.

Calla is a wonderful main character who grows into her own powers, while being forced- and learning how to- deal with her emotions and her past. But also other characters shine in this book, especially Amina, Delphine and Gideon. Hannah and Caspian develop a wonderful friendship and especially Caspian manages to keep the humor he had in book one while not shying away from being vulnerable. And Ezra!!! Oh my heart.
This book introduces multiple POVs more frequently than book one, and even if that slows the first half down at some points, it all comes together easily in the second half! I swear those last 30% were filled with magic I couldn’t stop reading.

A great sequel that makes you hungry for more!!! I need book three in my hands asap

This was an enjoyable read — I was absolutely rooting for our main characters as a couple, even way back in the beginning, lol. The magic systems are unique and interesting. There was just sort of something missing though, not sure what exactly. I didn’t love the multiple POVs, with the three different people we got, I get how it added to the story but I felt way less invested in the valkyries. I don’t feel like this book was a well fleshed out as book one, maybe just doing too much.

Oh man. Why did I continue with this series? Still no explanation of the dice here. What does a 1 mean? What if you roll a 1 and a 4? It’s supposed to mean how much power the witch gets, but umm, could we PLEASE get an explanation of wt actual f?
While we are at it, I was so confused about the siren sea. At first I thought it might be an orbed land with air and gravity, like the old Atlantis movie, but no, there’s a water fight. How are their lights? How do you have fancy dresses? Sheets? Food? How does the wine stay in the glasses and not be mixed with water. How are you going the bathroom? Does glass really make a shattering sound ALL UNDER WATER?! Please, I just can’t. This is such LAZY world building here. Electricity? Underwater😭⚡️
The book spends some time on Hannah and Cass getting gillyweed .. wait that’s Harry Potter.. whatever breathey root they were getting, to never use. Edit this out. Then Calla and Caspian go to save Ezra and, well, just to say goodbye? This book could have been 250 pages shorter. Or the same length with some sort of world building, better editing and the freaking dice explained.
You just know the Valkeryie brought back Ezra. They never name the name of the soul.
So much potential. So much disappointment.

Thank you to the author and Disney Hyperion for providing me with an ARC in exchange of an honest review ✨

Ooh to see my favorite witches again and get to know other characters all in one book. I loved seeing how the aftermath of book one was dealt with in this book. As I reader I had my concerns because not only I needed closured like the characters I felt like I needed it to happen for my ship to sail (sorry being selfish here my team Gideon heart was worried).

In this book we get to know the background of Delphine WHICH HELLO?????? My heart 🥲 I need to talk with Smith and have more than a word. We also got a lot of the plot being developed from book one to now. Despite having multiple POV with their own plot I absolutely ADORED how we slowly put them together and then BAM it all made sense. Truly amazing. I loved collecting the puzzle pieces!

• what I loved the most: AMINA’S STORYLINE! all the side characters and Amina’s voice and plot and everything, every time it was her turn I got so so so excited. The girls were amazing I could read a whole series of them just doing their things and I’d loved it. Truly felt in love with her and her two best friends. I need more and I can’t wait for them to meet my baby Calla 💗ALSO CALLA’s ROMANCE STORYLINE! I don’t want to spoil it but jeowbsjwkavahw I died. I loved them your honor 😭😭🤌🏼🤌🏼

• what I didn’t love most: as much as I loved collecting the puzzle pieces I wish I knew sooner what everything was for. I was a bit confused at time at why everything was happening the way it did, and I was still a bit confused about certain plot points. Although all of my confusion were mostly answered in the end, I wish I was more in the loop of things throughout the book!

Nonetheless this didn’t make me enjoy the book any less, I was still avidly reading it to solve the mysteries and follow my babies adventures. Sorry they are all growth witches but I can’t help but to love them so much.

🌊 one bed

🖤 DO NOT MISS OUT ON THIS ONE! Kaylie has an amazing way of writing characters that makes you so so attached to them. AND THE END? THE END HAS COMPLETELY MAKE ME GO INSANE FOR BOOK THREE! HOW DARE U!!!!!!!!!!

Waiting not so patiently for book three 🥲✨

Like A Ruinous Fate, A Reckless Oath was an enjoyable and rememberable read. I did reread A Ruinous Fate before reading A Reckless Oath. I retained the story of A Ruinous Fate quite well, and I enjoyed my reread. I felt my reread was a good refresher, mainly pertaining to who was who was in the decently sized cast. Some of the side characters from A Ruinous Fate have bigger roles in A Reckless Oath.

A Reckless Oath begins right where A Ruinous Fate ended. A Reckless Oath was told through multiple perspectives and introduces some new characters. There were some pretty big reveals in this installment, as well as some character development. The cast was diverse. There was more violence and gore in A Reckless Oath compared to A Ruinous Fate. The ending was left open for the next installment.

The author included a glossary for the characters and other beings at the beginning of the story.

Content Guide: violence, kidnapping, gore, brief sensuality, torture

Overall, A Reckless Oath was very well written and a great installment to the Heartless Fates Series. I enjoyed my reading experience. I could see myself rereading A Reckless Oath as well as continuing the series.

I would highly recommend A Reckless Oath to other YA fantasy readers who enjoy stories centered around magic, dangerous and foreboding enemies, fates [ both of 'destiny' and beings ], and an intriguing ending.

Thank you to NetGalley, Disney Hyperion, and Disney Worldwide Publishing for this advanced copy! You can pick up A Reckless Oath on January 30, 2024.

I was lucky enough to receive a physical ARC of this book in a giveaway from Kaylie Smith, so I actually finished this a few months ago -- and I loved it! Kaylie took an already dynamic world and expanded it significantly. The multi-POVs really allowed us to explore the Siren Sea and Land of the Valkyries, as well as Delphine and Amina's backstory. We met more characters (good and bad) and watched Calla go through a heartbreaking character arc as she grieved Ezra.

I'm still not sure how I feel about Gideon and Calla, but I'm glad we'll get to explore more of that dynamic in the third book. I'll admit that I was slightly more invested in their storyline than the others, which caused the book to slow at times. But, if Amina or Delphine are your favorite characters, you'll love the deep dive we take into their world.

All in all, an excellent sequel and one that hits shelves in just a few days!

Darling Delphine on the cover of this beautiful book, j’ADORE! Full review to come after I organize my chaotic jumble of Notes reactions in a non-spoilery way! But I’ll just say—there's more romance, more deadly terrifying creatures, and more action-packed scenes than ever before. Be prepared for some characters to realllyy GO THROUGH IT in this one!!!

I know this book comes out in 2024 but I am *already* biting at the bit for book THREE!

Rating: ★★★★.75 stars

”You were never broken before,” he implored. “And if you’re broken now, so am I. Together, remember?”

✍️ One Sentence Synopsis: An enchanting follow-up novel that showcases three streams of events: Calla & Gideon, as they grapple with their harrowing new reality; Delphine, who struggles to find a way out of her newfound watery prison; and Amina, who has returned from exile after many years and is filled with delightful vengeance.

💭 Overall Thoughts: As a reader and lover of book series’, my hope when I pick up a book’s successor is that the latest book will add more depth to the characters and enrich the overall storyline. A Reckless Oath is an example of a book that does just that. I was truly engrossed in each POV, and found myself racing to get to the next chapter to see how things turn out. I think the pacing in this book is pretty typical— there are slow parts that are essential to set the stage for what’s to come, scenes of tension, rising action, and then finally a heart-pounding ending. By the end of this story, you will feel relief, excitement, and a burning curiosity about what happens in book 3.

”It’s time you face the nightmare you forced me to become.”

What I Liked:
👍 Delphine: If there’s anything I can guarantee about A Reckless Oath, it’s how much Delphine will steal your heart (pun intended). She was the brightest burning star for me, for a multitude of reasons. Her story is gritty, complex, and best of all, fulfilling.
👍 The POVs: Shifting point of views can often be divisive among readers, but in this case, it’s a strength to the story. The timing of these perspective shifts is just right, and it’s effortless to get into the headspace to begin each new chapter.
👍 The World: This book takes us on a journey around many new parts illustrated in the beautiful world map. We get the chance to see where some of our main characters are from, and how these environments shaped them. I loved getting a glimpse into each corner of this world, and I’m sure there’s more still to be seen!
👍 The Plot: While many things happen within this book, I am mostly in awe of how each plot line culminates to essentially the same point. I could tell that Smith was flexing her literary muscles when plotting this book. It feels very wisely crafted, and gives me so much faith that book 3 will have an immensely satisfying ending, tying up all loose strings.

”You know how to collect the hearts of those you meet,” Gideon told her. “You and he were similar in that way.”

What I Wanted More Of:
👐 This book gave us so much already that I feel bad asking for more, but here I am! I desperately want to dive more into Hannah, Caspian, and most begrudgingly, Kestrel’s, backstories in the next book. I felt that these supporting characters played somewhat limited roles in this book, and I’m excited to see what they have to give in the next one. Given the depth Delphine and Amina displayed in this book when they weren’t the main focus of book 1, gives me hope in this aspect.

⚠️ Content Warnings: Blood, torture

She didn’t know what her future held. What she did know was that the queens didn’t think she was a contender in their game of war, but she was about to show them just how strong an opponent she would be

What in the ever loving hell do you mean that this is over? I need the third one immediately.

A cast of witches and Valkyrie take on fate and try to overthrow some selfish bitchy Queen in the process oh the sheer amount of tension in this book is off the charts and had me punching a wall

I had such a freaking blast reading this book that I wanted to savor every single minute of it. The world and the plot just keep growing, and I am so excited to see how this is going to end (or destroy me)

Calliope, Delphine, Gideon Cass Hannah —all my babies were going through their freaking ringer

Kaylie I’m in your walls how dare you make me like the person responsible for [redacted] characters demise

I love messy relationships, and pretty much every single dynamic in this book is messy as HELL. I really didn't care for Amina's chapters, but overall I really enjoyed this one. All of the Ezra scenes broke my god damn heart.

Also, if Hannah isn't on the cover of book 3 I will riot. Give my girl the respect she deserves.

I received an ARC of this book - thank you to the author and publisher! ❤️

This is the perfect sequel to A Ruinous Fate! Getting to spend more time with my favourite disaster girl Calla and her posse of idiots, and meeting new characters to love and loathe has me itching for the next book already!

Smith leaves puzzle pieces and Easter eggs crafted as expertly as Ms Taylor Swift herself throughout (Kaylie Smith is the real Mastermind), bringing all those pieces together so expertly in the final Act of the book.

Beautiful and immersive world building, more snark and tension than we deserve, and a spotlight on some of Book 1’s side characters, this book is fantastic!

The only bad thing about getting an amazing ARC (thank you, Disney Hyperion!) is that you have to wait *even longer* for the next book.

This book has so much potential after the first one and it simply fell through for me. Normally when I listen to audiobooks, I listen at 1-1.15x speed because I want to savor and enjoy the story. I literally bumped this speed up to 1.5-1.75 (as fast as I could listen without losing myself in the words) because I really just wanted to get it over with.

I likely will not be continuing the series unless I see reviews of the next book that convince me otherwise. There was a few sections that I did actually enjoy, particularly towards the end. This is what bumped it up to 2 stars from a 1 star rating, however, it was not enough to make me want to continue the series on its own.

My main gripe was how messy the POVs made the story. This book suffered from too many POVs that seemed rather pointless and didn't really have anything to do with each other, though they got closer towards the end to being related. I think this book would have benefitted from being split into either multiple smaller books, or three parts, separated by the main story lines: Delphine and the Sirens, Amina and the Valkyries, and Calliope and the Witches.

Sometimes, the POVs wouldn't even seem consistent, where section would start off in one person's perspective, but then suddenly they would mention something that only another character would know, like what their body was feeling or what they were thinking. On top of that, the relationships between characters and how they interacted with each other was completely unrelatable and dare I say unrealistic. Some things that people said I literally scoffed at.

I really wanted to enjoy this book, but alas everyone gets disappointed sometimes.

What a solid, action-packed second volume! If you enjoyed A Ruinous Fate, you’ll find everything you loved about it againin A Reckless Oath.

I have some thoughts. Let me break it down into things I’ve loved VS details that ‘bothered´ me.

What I liked:
Getting more Delphine. I adored her in ARF and I really loved her POV in this book. We learn everything about her backstory, the way Siren’s Sea and its Shoals works, and she proves once again how strong minded and brave she is!
• Amina. Honestly? I was skeptical of her POV at first because let’s be for real— considering where we left things off in ARF, I wasn’t really fond of the girl. But the way things start to slowly tie up plot-wise thanks to her character’s input? Exciting! Also, Sabine was hilarious. Her energy was chef’s kiss. When she and Delphine meet……. We’ll be in for a hell of a ride!!
• This volume is once again action-packed, in a way that never makes a POV change a bother because you know shit is about to happen! Multiple POVs narratives can get frustrating sometimes but I find it never to be the case with this cast of characters.
• The twists here and there that constantly keep you on edge.
• Some of these lines HIT.I will not quote for the sake of secrecy until the release, but let me just: JABSSJDJZJDJSKDK. There.
• THE LAST 20%?!?! THE EPILOGUE? SO MANY THINGS HAPPENING. FIGHTS. MAGIC. REVEALS. SO PROUD OF MY GIRLS. I love that these books always end with a quick unhinged-Calla moment!

Now, the few points that bothered me ‘enough’ to prevent me from giving A Reckless Oath a full 5 stars:
• A few things were more told than shown. Hannah’s and Caspian’s friendship development for instance. It was definitely endearing but the glimpses into their characters were too rare for me to really feel the connection. It is mentioned multiple times— by Hannah herself, by Calla and Gideon… But it still felt a bit light and rushed to me.
• In a similar vein, especially at the beginning, everything came a bit too easily to Calla and Gideon. They would just ask whoever and get the information they needed, then they would walk a few miles and find the items they were looking for— and yes, these things came with a price, but they didn’t face actual difficulties. Side and important note: things DID get more complex eventually. (Understatement of the year lol).
• My previous point might also come from the fact that I was SO FRUSTRATED WITH CALLA AND GIDEON at first. I love these fools with my entire heart. But lord did some of their decisions make me scream. Stubborn idiots.

Most of these ‘friction’ points are (roughly) located in the first half of the book and definitely get better— but they were still on my mind by the time I finished the book, hence my mentioning them.

That being said it was a massive pleasure to get these characters back, to see the plot thickening and pieces slowly falling into place. I know ARO isn’t even officially out yet but I’ll give whatever the price is in exchange for Book 3 now!!!!

4.25 stars rounded down for GR— many, many thanks to Disney Hyperion and most particularly to Kaylie Smith for this ARC!

Thank you Netgalley and Disney Hyperion for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

"A Reckless Oath" by Kaylie Smith is a spellbinding continuation of the enchanting world introduced in the first book, with a rich tapestry of characters and intricate plotlines that will keep readers hooked until the very end. Before reading this book, I highly recommend rereading “A Ruinous Fate” if it has been awhile because this sequel picks up right where the first book left off. There are also lots of characters and multiple points of views, so I highly recommend a refresher so you don’t lose track.

Through the different perspectives of several characters, both new and old, Smith weaves together a complex narrative that unfolds with gripping intensity. You will find yourself immersed in the characters' struggles and triumphs as they navigate a world filled with magic, danger, and unexpected twists. One of the novel's standout strengths is its exploration of character backgrounds and motivations. From Delphine's compelling backstory to Amina's journey of vengeance, each character is given depth and complexity, making them feel like real individuals with their own hopes, fears, and desires. I really think this character development is a step-up from the first book as I found myself even more invested in the characters as the plot unfolds. The introduction of new characters, such as Amina's friends, adds further dimension to the story, expanding the world and providing fresh perspectives.

I will say that I found the shifting perspectives a bit daunting at first, especially since I am horrible with names and keeping track of all the characters, especially the new ones, Smith’s writing did an excellent job in integrating these narratives, allowing them to intersect and converge in a satisfying manner. The pacing of the novel is well-balanced, with moments of tension and excitement interspersed with quieter, more introspective scenes that deepen the characters' development. With the faster points of the plot, you can find yourself reading through the entire book in just a few sittings (since it is rather long), but the slower points really allow you to enjoy the character moments.

Overall, "A Reckless Oath" is an engaging (there were many twists and turns I wasn’t expecting throughout the book) and emotionally resonant sequel that builds upon the strengths of its predecessor while expanding the world and deepening the characters. I definitely can’t wait to read more from Smith.

The first book in this series, A Ruinous Fate, won my heart with its found family trope, immersive world-building, and diverse cast of characters. This sequel was high on my list of anticipated reads this year.

The story picks up right where the other book ended – and what an ending that was. This time most of the characters are separated into groups. War is imminent, and they’re on various quests to prepare for it. Many new characters are introduced, and POVs are added. I enjoyed some more than others, and several reviewers mentioned they found it difficult to keep characters straight because of the large cast. That wasn’t the case for me, but I appreciated the glossary of characters the author added.

I was most invested with Calla and Gideon’s story. Their soul bond and its strengths and weaknesses continues to fascinate me. They’re both grieving and experience some intense moments as they deal with a variety of emotions and dangerous situations. More of Delphine’s backstory is revealed (she’s featured on the stunning cover), and she ventures into some gray areas. I honestly didn’t know what choice she’d make, but I agreed with it in the end. The sibling-like relationship that develops between Caspian and Hannah is perfect, and they could both use the support. Although her part is small in the first book, Amina’s POV makes up a much larger portion of the story this time. Her actions at the end will significantly impact the next book.

Smith continues to expand this amazing world filled with witches, valkyries, and sirens in addition to others. Filled with action, friendship, grief, betrayal, and vengeance, this is an exciting sequel that left me anxious for the release of the next book. Recommended to fans of expansive magical worlds, bold and messy characters, and stories filled with a gamut of emotions.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
