Mark Anderson is known as one of the many homophobes at Avery Row High. But Mark has a secret. Mark is gay and must hide it from his homophobic family or be disowned by them. When Mark notices Derrick Vernon, he develops a crush on him. Mark tries everything he can to get Derrick out of his mind and fails.
To make matters worse, Mark is paired with Derrick on an English report. Mark wonders how he will control his emotions around Derrick and vows to himself to do everything he can to hide them from him while they work together. Mark thought his feelings were under control when an incident happened between them that outs Mark to Derrick. Soon after, Mark and Derrick begin seeing each other secretly.
Mark and Derrick are happily together until Derrick gets the news from his parents that he is moving away from Avery Row. Heartbroken at losing his true love, Mark thinks it’s the worst thing that has happened to him. After Mark’s emotional and tearful goodbye to Derrick, Mark’s father finds out Mark is gay, and he sends him to a gay conversion camp.
Mark experiences terrible things at the gay conversion camp True You that will change him forever. When Mark returns home, he is poorly treated by his family. Mark makes it through his senior year with support from his only family member, his cousin Christopher Anderson and neighbor Fabian Lopez.
When Mark is falsely accused of something horrible by his two brothers and cousin, Mark is violently attacked by his father. Mark leaves Avery Row, vowing to never return. Afterward, Mark meets people through his journey that helps him heal from the trauma he has experienced.
Years later, in Mark’s adulthood. Mark never forgot the vow he and Derrick made by their favorite tree. Mark wonders if they will ever unite to fulfill their promise to meet by the tree if they find their way back to each other. Mark also wonders if he will ever reunite with his estranged family.
