i've been excited to read this for a while as i actually backed this on kickstarter, but i also got sent an arc copy so figured i could review it now!

full of gross, icky, skin-crawling stories, with a primary focus on insectoids and parasitic relationships. there's some in particular i really enjoyed that i'll go more in depth on below but overall a great collection of horror stories.

- 'antisymbiosis' by danny shaw
a sci-fi horror story written in the form of recordings and notes from an analyst stuck in an underground lab with an unknown entity. i really loved how this was written and the analyst's descent into fear and madness really gripped me. some great tension and a creepy ending.

- 'hard plastic, soft flesh' by elecia page
we follow a character infected with microplastics. they take part in an experimental treatment that cures the microplastic infection, but infects them with something much worse. a fantastic little gory read, it feels almost like a zombie or vampire story but less fantastical and more sci-fi.

- 'familiar faces' by tinamarie cox
in this one we follow maggie, or i suppose the thing wearing maggie's face, as she selects a new host. fantastically well written, i loved the imagery, i only wish it was longer!

- 'cherry on top' by samantha arthurs
this was a particular favourite of mine. we follow cherry, a trans girl living in the bible belt, who's being bullied by popular girl kaitlyn. one day kaitlyn takes it too far and cherry ends up in the hospital. scared and angry, she's ready to get revenge. full of rage and with a fantastic ending, i loved this one!

- 'always check where you're about to piss' by august blaine centauri
this was the last story in the collection and my favourite of them all, mara is convinced she's having the period from hell but actually it's much, much worse. had me literally cringing and curling in on myself. utterly gross but so, so good.

Thank you to Hear Us Scream for this opportunity! It will be available September 23,2023!

So this is a horror anthology so I will give a review of each story instead of just the whole book!

1.) the alligator handbag by A.R.C. Mitra is about what happens when you buy that fugly purse at the thrift store and it starts to change you

2.) pool party baby scorpions by Kourtnea Hogan is about a middle school girl named Melinda who has a red mark on her thigh and goes to the pool party of the year. This one was gross and I will driving the bus to hell for cackling

3.) Antisymbiosis by Danny Shaw is about a science experiment gone horribly wrong. The alien specimen is loose and the consequences are dire. Mind the triggers on this one. Even with the warning to me this was brutal.

4.) peeling back, right down to the bone by Elou Carroll is the one that I should have waited to read. Holy god this one was gross as hell. Good but freaking gross.

5.) shapeshifter by A.E. Santana yikes. Mind the triggers! This one was traumatic. A traumatized child lets put her inner monster. This story is going to haunt me.

6.) ring a ding ding by Katharine Pollock again mind the triggers. What will a woman do to make her ring fit her finger. My skin literally shuddered on my bones reading this one.

7.) Hard Plastic soft flesh by Elecia Page is a medical testing story with a weird twist.

8.) Familiar Faces by Tinamarie Cox
Holy crap!!!! Ahhhhhh! My brain! But I love it even as it made me do a weird OMG WTF did I just read dance in my bedroom. I was so grossed out I couldn’t sit still reading this.

9.) Cherry on Top by Samantha Arthurs whilst this was a good story the transphobia was bothersome but a very big part of the story. Mind the triggers on this one. Also that ending was epic and had me cackling.

10.) treacle fish earth by E.J. Bramble
Ahhhh! No! Nope nope nope. So good but Nope. You know when you see something so horribly gross your whole body shudders away. That was this story for me.

11.) Wormbound by Caroline Barnard Smith worms. Worms everywhere. WORMS!!!

12.) Belly up by Chloe Spencer sea monkey lesbian horror. This one was awesome.

13.) always check where you are about to piss by August Blaine Centuri
There is something in the freaking toilet, Mara! THERE IS SOMETHING IN THE DAMN TOILET!!

This book is filled with gross stories that will make your skin crawl. Make sure to check trigger warnings for each story.

All the stories were gross yet they will keep you sucked in. The stories range from cursed items, scorpion like creatures, people stuck in an underground lab with a horrible experiment gone wrong, the feeling of something crawling under your skin, shapeshifting little girl, and something being in a toilet, just to give you some ideas of the grossness that you will come across reading this book.

I enjoy this book but my skin crawled while reading a few of these. The last story in this book really got to me. Needless to say, I will not be checking under every toilet seat when I go to the bathroom.

Like all story collections, some are better than others, but all are creepy crawly grossness, which was absolutely the intention. Well done.
