This book left me with a lot of conflicted feelings. It’s beautiful in its stark and plain language. Its tortured and tragic and bleak. I had a fair amount of unanswered questions at the end, and the writing was alright for what it intended itself to be, simple. You won’t find flowing prose here, but the story didn’t need it.
It gets 5 stars for the feelings I’m left with upon finishing it. It’s searing.
I picked this up at a used bookstore just for the name; Angeline is my middle name, and I rarely see it anywhere. This story will stay with me.

My class read this book for an assignment and I really enjoyed it. The characters were wonderfully human and the plot wasn't what I expected at all. The writing is so rich that it sucks you in, as well as the stark contrasts of color used in the novel. We also were able to skype with the author Allen McCune which was extremely insightful. Learning that he hadn't taken English classes in college and works in government, but was able to write such a fantastic novel was amazing.
