Before my mother died, she warned me about these things. Werewolves would always hunt me. Sentinel Falls held a trap I wouldn't see. And I should not - no matter how romantic or inevitable I thought the idea was - believe in fate. Because Grayson Devante believed in fate. And if he has his way, I'll probably end up dead.
With unforgettable characters and heart-breaking romance, The Wolf in the Watchtower enters a world filled with dangerous intrigue, dark magic, suspense - and the price of love. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Suzanne Collins, and Stephenie Meyer. Book one in a trilogy, this paranormal fantasy ends with a mild cliffhanger. For readers over 18.
Sue Wilder first discovered the power of story as a child living in California, when she was caught starting a grapefruit war in a neighboring orchard. She managed to absolve all her cohorts from guilt and has since moderated her behavior. She now writes New Adult romance and Paranormal Fantasy romance with hunky heroes, independent women, and twists, suspense, spice, and HEAs.
She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and a yellow lab named Maxine.
This book is not for the faint of heart. It isn't dark but it's an ongoing fight for survival for the main female character and the pack her family is from. There is history of the MFC's mom's struggle with "mental health issues" in the human world and the inhumane treatment she received as well as mental/emotional abuse from her husband.
The world is complex and magic is woven throughout. The wolves have their own culture, rituals and history that a no-wolf wanted to be a part of when she was little but ran away from as a teenager. As an adult, she's getting a crash course in survival skills from a wolf's perspective and learning about the world she left behind. Throughout she's challenged by her emotionally constipated Alpha who knows too much but not enough about what is happening in their world and her position within it.
This book isn't heavy in romance but builds the foundation for affection and connection.
This world caught my attention and the characters kept my attention. The humor in interactions and the beauty of the world helps keep the book from being too heavy. I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Where to begin, I loved thus book, drew me in from the beginning, Now was easy to relate to, trying so hard, and a lack of confidence we all have and try to hide. A completely different take on shifters, this book gave me all the feels, and then it ripped my heart out and left me crying like a baby. Read with kindle unlimited, but I will be buying both books because I loved it.
The other reviews are correct. This book is beautifully written. I also enjoyed it. I wouldn't catrergorize this book as a romance novel. It's a fantasy adventure. The FMC can get a little whiny. I want more POV from the MMC, but that just adds more allure and mystery to the novel. I like this book. Looking forward to part 2.
I had a hard time putting this book down. Every page was a wild read. You never know what you would read about everything you turned a page. I had to make myself put this book down just so I could take care of my pets I can't wait to read the next book about the two main character in this stories.
Am absolute rush from start to finish! Loved reading this book, can’t wait to read the next. An engaging story with unique characters. I enjoyed the constant push and pull, and signs of growth. It was a little frustrating, the backsliding. I hope that will be resolved in the next!
I really enjoyed this book. It was dark yet compelling and full of danger, mystery, and some magic thrown in. It was not alight read but that was because there is darkness on the horizon as Noa ends up back at her dead grandfathers town and finds out not everything is what she thought. A slow burn romance brews between Noa and Grayson that had me wondering what was going on between these two as events played out slowly that had everyone guessing and trying to but all the clues together. Really liked trying to guess what was going on and thought the story was compelling and just drew me in. Need the next one to see what happens next.
What I Liked: The Wolf in the Watchtower did a good job of building up a slightly new interpretation of a world with werewolves, vampires, and more without it feeling like over-explanations. It is mostly from the perspective of the female protagonist, Noa, but a few chapters are from the POV of the alpha wolf, Grayson, which makes the reader connect with him more without giving away his air of mystery.
What I Didn't Really Like: Noa's negative view of herself makes me really sad, but I hope that's something she will overcome in the books to follow.
Overall: This was an excellent slow-burn romantic fantasy and should be read by anyone that enjoys wolf shifters and alpha males. Just be warned that it does end on a cliffhanger, which is more of an unexplained reveal, and the second book is due to be released in Feb 2024. If you don't like a bunch of unanswered questions floating through your head, hold off until you are sure you can get your hands on the second book immediately.
Writing style not my favorite, but liked the story
Story: 3/5 Spice: 0.5/5 Pace: Medium/Slow
The writing style in this book wasn't my favorite. It made it hard to focus. It was like trying to follow a train of thought that bounced around. It was choppy and lacked flow. With that said, the storyline itself had me interested. I loved the aesthetic of the book. Loved the elements of the paranormal (wolves, vampires, witches, the green man, etc.) and the darker tones. It was different, which was refreshing. I just felt like I'd get more confused when the author would say something and not fully explain it and then switch what they were talking about. I like mystery and not being able to predict what's happening, but this kind of took it too far? I felt like I never really got a feel for the characters and who they were. I wanted to know more about them and their personalities. And characters were always leaving thoughts linger that, to me, didn't have an obvious conclusion. There was a disconnect with the characters and the reader. I'm so sad because this had SO much potential. And I wanted to fall in love with it. I've had this on my TBR forever and waited until the final book came out to start it. I'm going to continue reading, because I'd like to see how it plays out and I'm hoping it gets a little easier to digest. But it overall wasn't my favorite, mainly because of how it was written.
I am not normally a romance reader but I have been more into it recently. That being said, I love that this book is not just a romance story with other things packed in around it. There is so much detail and depth to the word, the conflicts, and the mysteries to uncover. I sure do love a good puzzle and this book has lots to unpack and overthink! Love it!
One detail I really liked in this book was the lame comebacks our main character gives time and time again. I am not a person that can think of snappy comebacks in the moment. I will think of what I should have said hours later so for me the lame comebacks and childish songs she repeats in her head were super relatable.
I cannot rave enough about this book! It was so unique, very well written, and drew out a myriad of emotions. I devoured this book and the 2nd and cannot wait for the third!
So I did like this book. The four is because it dragged in some places. A five for me is a book that I will read solid, pulls me in and I just finish it. A four, is still good, but does not have that same pull. Anyway, like I said, the plot is good, it is an interesting take on the werewolf genre. An interesting mix of magic and reality.

I wanted to like this more but something about the writing just threw me off - it felt disjointed and the pacing a little slow.
It bored yet interested me at the same time - I can’t describe it but I think it was due to the pacing. Lots of dialogue but the answers were just coming in too slow for me to stay engaged so I start skimming maybe 50% through.
Someone with a long attention span and a TBR less than 1000 might actually enjoy this.
Also FMC annoyed me a little bit but I’m assuming there’s a character arc in there somewhere.
I'm not into werewolves, but I wanted to give this book a chance. It was fine at first... Then, Grayson was too dense for my liking and I didn't know how to feel about Noa, my feelings towards her were confusing. Their romance wasn't something significant, so I got bored pretty fast.
So, I don't know what I'd classify this book as. There's fantasy elements, romance elements, self-discovery elements, and high drama. Not much in the way of action or character development for anyone beyond the main character.
It kind of feels like Alice in Wonderland. You are almost immediately thrown into an otherworldly experience with a massive helping of "WTF is going on here." I still feel this way having finished the book. It's strange enough to keep me interested, but if not for that, I doubt I would've finished it because you really don't learn a lot in this book, but I think that's by design.
None of this is to say that Wilder can't write well. On the contrary, I think she can write very well. It just feels like a lot is missing. There's some emotional feedback in the book, but most opportunities are left untouched, especially anger that Noa has the absolute right to express but doesn't. I think she should've. She didn't shy away from her own consequences for misjudgment, and others needed to be called out too for how she was treated.
The romance hit too much on the wrong side for me. I didn't feel the chemistry that was supposed to be there. Likely, because of the overwhelming disdain Grayson aimed toward Noa throughout the entirety of the book. Because, again, none of this was addressed head-on as it deserved to be, we're missing key emotional elements for a complete story.
The side characters remain unexplored or fleshed out in any meaningful way beyond names by the end of the book. They're like shades that haunt the forest until they're needed. So any casualties or betrayal would be flat.
So, three stars. Because it did keep me reading. And I'll probably read the next one.
I really liked this book. It was an interesting story. I think I would like to find out what happens in the rest of the series. I got a little lost in the middle and I think things will be explained a bit more in book 2, but this was a great read. And it's getting 5 stars because... reasons.
If you love Patricia Briggs, Faith Hunter, Ilona Andrews, Kelley Armstrong, then you need to read this book. Fabulous world building. Flawed and wonderfully written characters. Sue Wilder knocked this book out of the park.
I downloaded this book not really knowing the author…and Sue, you knocked it outdo the park! The world-building! The character arcs, the rich imagery! I couldn’t put it down and now I’ve got to go find the next book! Fantastic! I’ll be following you now!!
I personally wasn’t a fan of this book or the style of writing. It was short and choppy and lacked a good story flow. This should’ve been my first DNF.
Noa finds herself in the last place she expected, back home. She is a no-wolf, an enigma and an outcast. Will she bring the madness the pack believes, or will she be the savior they never realized they needed.
So. I originally put this book for 2 reasons. Some girls out there decided to pull a Regina George & the plastics move and trash someone that didn’t deserve it, and I love a good werewolf story.
The story itself is pretty good. It was an easy light read for me. My only complaint is that some of the transitions were not clear and it was a bit confusing as I read the book.
I will definitely try the next book because I’m the kind of person that needs the whole story. :) I have a theory about who one of the bad guys is. Not sharing here.
Definitely give the book a try, and leave an honest review. Every book deserves legitimate and honest reviews. <3
I saw people were review bombing this book for an amazon issue and decided to pick it up. Review bombing is childish bully stuff but it led me to this book, so I guess some good came of it. I don't know if I would've found it otherwise. The world is fascinating and the characters are interesting, I care about them. I cried, I was on edge. I want to know more about everything but that's how first books work. They reel you in. I'm caught. Already have the next book downloaded.
I couldn’t put this book down! The character development and world-building are phenomenal, pulling me deeper into the story with every chapter. The twists kept me on edge—I was never sure what would happen next. There’s never a dull moment, and I can’t wait to read the next book!
TROPES: Enemies to Lovers, Fated Mates, Fish out of Water, Secret Identities/Powers
I stumbled upon this book after it garnered some attention in several of the Facebook reader groups I belong to. I wanted to actually read the book and give a fair and honest review. I've had to wait until the account wasn't paused to leave my review and rating and in the meantime I've finished the series and have read several other books. I will do my best not to spoil anything.
First, I have read many shifter, vampire and witch romances. I particularly enjoy the paranormal genre. This series has an incredibly refreshing take on the world of shifters and does not subscribe to the rules of the omegaverse. There is more than one Alpha and no use of the terms Beta or Omega. Sue has also built a beautiful world set in the idyllic town of Sentinel Falls, where other mythical creatures exist as well as some unholy ones. I mean there needs to be a bad guy right?
This story is steeped in mythology, curses and fated destinies. Both the MMC and FMC struggle to with the knowledge of the fate they've been born to and work tirelessly to break from roles they seem destined to carry out in order to set right an event that occurred hundreds of years before, leaving some female offspring without a wolf, including our heroine Noa.
While I enjoyed this entire series and read through it so fast, I did find a few problematic things with the storyline. The issues I had aren't really worth listing mainly because they are tiny details that bothered me enough to take note but not enough to keep me from enjoying the story. It's fiction. We are asked to suspend our disbelief when we enter these worlds and enjoy the journey we take along side the characters in the book.
