A wonderful modular story that features multiple narratives capturing the harrowing murder of a son, and the revenge of a father, and a haunting, otherly justice system.

So I read the book first start to finish and then put it aside and finished it again in chapter order (a bit of a journey). Both readings are absolutely 100% worth doing.

I think it is really cool and creative for the author to give two ways to read the book. The most obvious way is suspenseful due to its ambiguity of characters and actions. It is fascinating because of the bouncing timeline and the uncertainty of right and wrong. Then, reading it from 1-73 is suspenseful in it’s own way, with literal physical breaks needed in between chapters because the next needs to be found. It is fascinating because of fully knowing how the dialogue plays in and being able to find the common threads (like the commentary on air between the executed character and the father). It is powerful because of the ending.

Really, really enjoyed this book and the unique presentation of it.

One sentence review: I have trouble putting down a book when its prose is as propulsive as its narrative arc is intense, so this one got read in one fine sitting.

Propulsive, angry, and dark. Beautifully edgy writing on grief. Slightly too experimental - in some chapters the POV became muddled beyond comprehension. Also I didn't understand the significance of the numbers. Still, a powerful piece of fiction.

(Ah I see, another reviewer clarified that the numbers are an alternative way to read the book. I'll go back at some point and read it that way. Neat!)

Such a quick read but the writing is beautifully written. When I finished the book I didn’t want it to end. I needed more. I need more still… wish I could know more about both of these guys story lines. I sat in a Spokane, WA hotel room getting ready for a trip in the morning only to realize the author and his family lives in Spokane.
