What a lovely little read this was.
Katie is a travel and food writer waiting for her big break at the company she works at. When she finally gets the call from her boss she finds herself in Italy on an island called Ponza.
But it isn’t long until disaster strikes and Katie’s best friend and travel buddy ends up in an accident and hospital bound thus extending Katie’s trip to be there for her friend.
Whilst Katie’s on the island she visits many beautiful places and makes friends with wonderful locals including Nico, the local chef.
Nico was such a charming character, always there to help when needed, always there to lend a hand and to talk to.
Their story was beautiful, I loved watching it develop between the pages.
It’s been fun reading Katie’s story and reading the adventure she’s on. The way the author describes the dishes had my mouth watering, they sounded delicious.

‘De Italiaanse vakantie’ past zowel wat betreft stijl als inhoud in het feelgood genre. Het bevat de nodige romantiek, maar gaat daarnaast ook over vriendschap en belangrijke waarden in het leven. Niet onbelangrijk: het toverde regelmatig een glimlach op mijn gezicht en gaf dus letterlijk een goed en warm gevoel. Het maakte het echter ook ietwat voorspelbaar, maar persoonlijk vind ik dat bij dit genre niet erg. Al op voorhand kunnen uitkijken naar dat einde is voor mij een van de charmes van feelgood verhalen (net zoals van een kerstfilm).
Het verhaal gaat over Katie die voor een werkopdracht naar een klein Italiaans eilandje afreist. Haar beste vriendin Farrah reist met haar mee. Dat niet alles over rozen loopt tijdens dit reisje zal geen verrassing zijn.
‘De Italiaanse droom’ is opgebouwd uit 29 hoofdstukken. Over het algemeen zijn ze mooi chronologisch opgebouwd al lijkt er hier en daar in het verhaal een kleine tijdssprong gemaakt te zijn (enkele dagen) terwijl iets verder blijkt dat dat niet echt zo is. Een beetje verwarrend dus. Ik kan het niet duidelijker omschrijven aangezien ik liever geen spoilers weggeef ;-). Maar misschien valt dit andere lezers wel helemaal niet op.
Het laatste hoofdstuk is voor mij een beetje kort uitgewerkt. Daar zit ineens veel tezamen, wat voor mij persoonlijk nog iets meer mocht uitgewerkt worden.
Catherine Mangan heeft een vlotte pen. Ze beschrijft het verhaal op een bijna filmische wijze waardoor ik soms het gevoel had mee op dat kleine eiland te zijn. Ze gaf mij zin in de heerlijke pasta’s, maar ook om de prachtige natuur te verkennen. Haar stijl is eenvoudig maar niet simpel en zal wellicht vele lezers aanspreken.
Wat de cover van het boek betreft: het Is er eentje van dertien in een dozijn. Mij spreekt het niet echt aan. Maar het lijkt te passen in de serie, dus ik begrijp zeker de keuze van de auteur en uitgeverij.
Voor mij was dit een eerste kennismaking met deze auteur maar zeker niet de laatste.

I don't read many romantic fiction books but sometimes, when it feels that everything is out of kilter, escaping into a lush Italian-based novel seems like the perfect choice. Last year I read One Italian Summer by Catherine Mangan which brought me back to Ischia, an Italian island in the Gulf of Naples that I had visited years ago. In The Italian Holiday, we set off an adventure to the island of Ponza situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, the largest of the Pontine Islands archipelago. I have never been to Ponza but Catherine Mangan has and through her eyes we explore the glorious landscape, the sparkling sea and the absolutely heavenly dishes, alongside the delightfully romantic story of travel writer Katie and her unexpected quest as she discovers that her path in life is about to take a very dramatic and unexpected turn.
Katie is a New York based junior writer, with ambition, working for a renowned magazine. Katie dreams of heading off on scintillating adventures, like her senior colleagues do, but first, she has to prove herself to her domineering boss. Katie is Irish but has made New York her home, having just put down a deposit on an apartment with her American boyfriend, Steve. Katie is feeling overwhelmed by life when suddenly an unanticipated job lands on her lap. Her boss was due to travel on an all-expenses trip to Ponza in order to write a feature for the magazine, but unforeseen circumstances result in Katie being offered the opportunity. Ecstatic and unable to believe her luck, she convinces her friend Farrah to join her, as Steve is unable to go.
When the two arrive at their exclusive accommodation, they are immediately smitten by the views, the people and the food. With mouth-watering dishes and vivid, almost photographic, descriptions of the scenery, Catherine Mangan transports the reader to this Italian paradise. Katie and Farrah are in awe of how the island has such an incredible approach to living to the fullest. Inspired and almost overwhelmed, they dive straight in, with a plan to experience everything the island has to offer. Katie has a schedule to stick to for her feature but, in her off-time, she is excited to further explore the island. But Katie's plans get derailed when Farrah has an accident and they are 'forced' to remain on the island for a month. With nowhere to stay, a deadline looming and a cantankerous boss, Katie goes into panic mode. But there is a ray of light in the form of a local chef with a curious desire to remain quite anonymous. His name is Nico and he is a huge advocate of sustainable living and slow-food with no carbon footprint. His ideas and enthusiasm are contagious, throwing Katie into a spin.
Katie had her life planned out but now, on this Italian island, is she just another holiday cliché seeing everything through rose-tinted glasses? Or has a genuine alternative presented itself? Confused, exhilarated and very much alive, Katie has decisions to make but will she make the right choice?
The Italian Holiday was exactly what I expected, and hoped, it would be. I love Italy and hope to return next year but right now, Catherine Mangan's sumptuous descriptions will sustain me for another while as I dream of bougainvillea strewn streets, luscious food, tongue-tingling wines and spectacular views.
The Italian Holiday is a very beguiling novel with a story that will sweep you off your feet and instantly transport you to the Italian island of Ponza, that I have seen described as 'Capri without the tourists'. Sounds absolutely magical. I did spot that Catherine Mangan was off on her Italian travels again, all in the name of research, so I'm looking forward to continuing my Italian adventures through her writing and adding to my must-visit Italian hideaways

I've just spent a glorious few hours on the sun drenched shores of Ponza, absorbing every last word of this book with a smile on my face, while wondering if Ponza is even a real island - wow just did a search and it is, and its as stunning as it was described.
I feel as though I know every nook and cranny of Ponza, this little Italian island, that Katie and Farrah are visiting. I'm in love with this place and will have to visit it myself one day, as it is such a different way of life to the regular hustle and bustle of city living.
I think this may be my favourite of Catherine Mangan's novels although I did love the others too. This really did transport me to Italy, and it is just what I want in a summer holiday sort of a book. This would have been perfect to read by the pool / sea in the sun!

And I just loved seeing how Katie reacted to things not going so smoothly on her trip in addition to her growing a bit closer to talented Chef Nico (even if he does have the sort of restaurant that personally I'd never eat at!). The descriptions of the food in the book were just mouth-watering.
And seeing Katie and the locals of Ponza attempt to speak to each other with very little foreign language knowledge is a lot of fun too.
This was just a sun filled, utterly glorious summer read that I adored.

I was kindly sent a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. It’s not my typical genre but sometimes this sort of escapist location based romance is exactly what is needed. I enjoyed reading about the island of Ponza in this novel - I’ve never been before but Mangan clearly had and she truly captured and transported me there and I loved experiencing the glorious scenery, idyllic beaches and traditional Italian meals. The romance is pitched well and doesn’t overwhelm the escapist feel of the story. I loved the detailed descriptions and could almost taste the food and it entirely succeeded in transporting me to the Italian island. I think the only things that I didn’t enjoy were how easily her job adapts to her having to stay on unexpectedly and how quickly her relationships changed - it all felt a little bit too convenient so for that reason, and because I probably wouldn’t re-read I’ve gone for 3 and a half stars (rounded up to 4 as it doesn’t allow a half star option).

An enjoyable tale following junior travel writer Katie as she’s given the opportunity of a lifetime: stepping into her boss’s shoes to take a trip to a little-known Italian island to write articles for Intrepid travel magazine. She travels with her best friend Farrah saying goodbye to New York and hello to the sun-kissed island of Ponza but whilst things start off well, Farrah has an accident meaning they will have to stay in Ponza for a few weeks. I enjoyed this novel, the scenic and food descriptions are amazing and instantly transport you there. Add in a demanding boss, passive-aggressive boss and a gorgeous Italian her and you have a fabulous novel. Thank you to NetGalley, Little, Brown Book Group and the author for the chance to review.

A great summer escape read on another island of which I have not heard. This is my 3rd book by Catherine Mangan, and it doesn't disappoint! Cute story that held your interest wanting more.
Breathtaking descriptions of the small, beautiful island, excursions and delicious write-up of mouth-watering, fresh, simple Italian dishes. I'm ready to visit Ponza and look forward to more books.

Absolutely Loved This Book!
I don't know if I've ever read a more descriptive book.
I could smell the air, see the different colors of the sea, suround myself with the stillness, etc.!!!! You have made me very happy, as I can not go to Italy because of mobility issues. However, you brought Italy to me!

Wonderful Escape
This lovely book really takes you away to a peaceful Italian island, and gives a wonderful perspective of life, especially when things don’t go perfectly as planned!

This book was a very good and easy read, i read it in 2 days which is highly unusual for me considering it took me about 4 months to read my last one. I both loved and hated how the ending was slightly left to the imagination. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed.

Very simple writing. The fact that the text messages were printed completely threw me off. Ponza is not as described according to pictures I’ve seen.

Het verhaal komt voor mijn gevoel wat traag op gang en ik had in het begin wat moeite om me in de personages in te leven. Eigenlijk pas op het moment dat Farrah in Ponza terecht komt merk ik dat ik echt in het verhaal zit en vanaf dan wil ik ook alleen maar verder lezen.
Je merkt tijdens het lezen dat Mangan bekend is op het Italiaanse eiland Ponza, want ze schrijft echt enthousiast over dit idyllische eiland. Tijdens het lezen had ik ook echt het gevoel alsof ik zelf op Ponza rond liep. Als een auteur dat voor elkaar krijgt ben ik altijd blij. Het is als vakantie gaan in een boek.
Hoofdpersonage Katie heeft niet alleen haar werkgever in haar nek hijgen. Ook haar vriend lijkt niet erg zelfstandig en hij wekte echt soms irritatie op. Hierdoor was ik natuurlijk ook enthousiast over het verloop van het verhaal. Al wilde ik Katie op een bepaald moment ook echt een schop onder haar kont geven, want ze laat zich op een bepaald moment echt overrompelen en doet dan iets waar je bijna zeker weet dat dit mis moet gaan. En dat gebeurt dan ook. Maar… het zou geen roman zijn als het uiteindelijk toch nog goed komt. En dat heeft ze op een leuke en mooie manier opgelost.
Wel bleven er tijdens het lezen soms enkele losse eindjes hangen en dat vind ik persoonlijk altijd jammer. Zo wordt op een bepaald moment gesproken over dat Katie moet navragen wat de huur van het appartement is want die mag voor haar budget niet te hoog zijn, maar vervolgens lees je er niks meer over.
Ook de verhaallijn van Farrah had wat mij betreft iets verder uitgediept mogen worden en ik had het leuk gevonden als zij ook nog een romance beleeft zou hebben terwijl ze in het ziekenhuis lag. Het wordt wel soms aangetikt maar niet verder uitgediept. Dat is een gemiste kans.
Echter ondanks de kritische punten heb ik echt genoten van De Italiaanse vakantie en dit zorgt er voor dat haar andere boeken ook zeker op mijn nog-te-lezen-lijst komen.
Dit boek ontvingen wij van HarperCollins. Dit beïnvloedt onze mening niet.

🍕Ik heb van pagina 1 van dit boek genoten. Dit is echt een boek die me helemaal ligt. Het sluit ook nauw aan bij mijn interesses en leefwereld. Kathie schrijft ook over haar reiservaringen (net zoals ik in mijn reis- en wandel blogs) en wanneer ze daarvoor op reis moet naar Ponza, neemt ze je ook echt mee. In haar beschrijving van dit Italiaanse eiland leek het alsof ik er echt rondliep. Ik zag de tientallen trappen die naar de haven leidde en de steile kliffen zo voor mij. Ik heb dan ook enorm genoten van de reis die de schrijfster ons liet beleven. Ook al lag ik gewoon in mijn tuin, ik voelde me een beetje op het Italiaanse eiland. Dit boek was een perfecte review voor dit eiland, want ik ben het meteen gaan opzoeken waar het juist lag en zou het zeker niet erg vinden om er ook op vakantie te gaan. Ik had er trouwens nog nooit van gehoord en vraag me af of het echt niet zo gekend is?

🏝️Het is het perfecte zomerboek / feelgood roman. Vlot geschreven en zeker niet langdradig. Ik heb me bij bepaalde zaken wel wat vragen gesteld waarbij de schrijfster iets vernoemd maar dan uiteindelijk geen antwoord geeft op de vraag. Maar dit is zeker niet storend. Eerder een nieuwsgierigheid. Het slot vond ik nogal kort. Je verwacht toch nog wat meer te weten te komen maar dat komt dan niet. Wie weet komt er nog een vervolg op het verhaal. Ik wil in elk geval de volgende boeken van Mangan ook lezen.

While reading about this beautiful place called Ponza and its now somewhere that I would love to visit. The water sounds and looks beautiful. Katie is a food writer that travels trying all kinds of cuisine which sounds fantastic. For the first time she gets asked to go so somewhere that isn’t in the US, so she’s very excited for this chance of a life time. She heads to Ponza with her friend Farrah and she ends up getting into an accident that makes their stay a little longer and meet a handsome guy named Nico.
