Great start, characters, and worldbuilding.
I just can't deal with the female MC (NASA employee) going "my love for the solar system." when discussing star gazing in a city, within the valleys of buildings. (planet stargazing is best done when the planets are dancing on the horizon, and you can't see that within the alleys between buildings. Her day job at NASA is working on techniques for "deriving star formation" - a wonderful astrophysics area of study ... for the galaxy and the universe. Yes, it includes creation of planetary systems - but her drive of "I needed something, anything, to fuel my love for the solar system but especially the stars." is like nails on the chalkboard ... we have one star in our solar system - the woman is involved with STARS, not planetary bodies.
It's like saying "I love for doors, so I have a blog on architecture around the world and design skyscrapers." Or "I'm into one-person plays, so I have a blog on actors and actresses and work in the movie industry." Or "I'm into tomato soups, so I vlog on restaurants and work in the food transportation industry."
The venn diagram is reverse of what it should be and I just can't. Take away - When adding science to your story, run it by people interested in science. (subject matter checks, even when it's just personality-character building things.)
I'm sorry to go on and on about this, but it is a really weird problem and I'm trying to figure out how to explain it.
