Here comes another western adventure of relentless action, obstacles and a touch of western romance
Dr. Maynard Blackwell spent the war saving lives. The only life he couldn’t save was his fiancé. With her gone, he gave up his guns, and he almost gave up medicine.
When a marshal is killed transporting a murder witness to safety, Doc Blackwell takes up the task. There’s just one catch.
The witness is an eight-year-old girl named Fern.
Fern is traveling with her mother, Layla, a beautiful and headstrong woman who will do anything to protect her child. With notorious outlaw Rowan Calderwood already behind bars, the trip should be quick and easy. But nothing goes as planned. Rowan has no intention of hanging. He’ll do anything to ensure Fern never makes it to the judge. After all, her testimony can’t hurt him if she’s dead.
Can Doc put his past behind him and keep Fern and Layla safe until the trial?
A Historical Western Adventure book by James Leonard is a standalone and can be read out of order.
The Teflon Doc. In every other chapter he is injured. Shot , stabbed, beat up etcetera, etcetera. Nothing stops this superman. He takes a lick'n and keeps on kill'n. Doesn't even stop to take a nap. That's some kind of hero.
Don' sell the heroine short either. She has her own list of injuries that would put mere mortals in bed for a month and still manages to knockout the head bad guy.
Her daughter is no slouch. She gets bit by a rattle snake and pretty much blows it off. Most five year old would have nightmares for life over what this kid has gone through or at least been a little whiny. Nope. She's a trouper.
The basic story wasn't bad. The characters both good guys and bad were out of proportion to the story. Not sure I'll try another James Leonard book.

I read a lot of western novels. I'm really impressed by those of James Leonard. With the exception of a few typos, the books I've read are great! He includes details that others do not and still moves quickly unto the next phase. His love interests are clear and realistic. His fighting scenes are better than 95% of the others I read. He includes realistic action with the hero getting injured by various realistic action . The hero gets injured but heals quickly. As you can tell I really like his books and will read everything he writes. I recommend you do also.
5 STARS James Leonard earns for Book 2 in his powerful Southwest Western Series. It is a well written & fast paced storyline with shocking shoot-em-up action jam packed into this book. Doc might be a trained doctor but he excels at killing also.
This page turning adventure is not for the weak because it is hard-core with its violence. That was the way the violence in life was in the western part of the country after the end of the Civil War.
You will not be able to put this one down or forget this book any time soon
Kill or be killed. There are a lot of mean people in the world. It is better to heal that hurt. Losses can heal and love can come again. Sometimes its best to walk away, sometimes you can't. Sometimes you have to take a life to save one. Highly recommended for all adult reader.
This is a great book that people should read their selves right from the start.I am glad the hero won and went on to have a happy life and a family.I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Doc was a medic in the civil war. He finished up the war and was on his way to peace and quiet with his future wife. But, sometimes the fickle finger of fate has its own plan.
An entertaining book with an unusual spin on life in the early west. Strong characters with an excellent storyline made the pages go by quickly. I've found a new author to follow.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Plenty of action to keep you entertained and some romance. At one stage I felt sorry for the hero as he was the one getting injured all the time. It was good to see a HEA ending.
I liked the story and the characters. And once I started reading it was hard to put down. I’m sorry to find out it was not the first in a series but a standalone story. My only complaint and I did find it irritating at first and by the end just funny, was the overuse of the word snickering
The story was just filled with battle after battle. I don't know how Doc. Could function with all the winds he had. Happy ending anyway. It was long and so violent. I will read more of your books, but hope they are not all like this.
Taking you through the life of a civil war Doctor, Leonard keeps us through the challenges of living in the time. The reader can enjoy the failures and the satisfaction of success.
I have enjoyed many of James Leonard books. His characters are interesting and the reader gets invested the first chapter. Highly recommend the author and his books. Wonderful stories can't wait to read the next one. Enjoy!
Super read and interest ing characters. A strong g story that has my character excitement and action. He perspective of a doctor in the west is refreshing. Read on.
