Family ties… Can put you in a real bind. One thing that retiree and amateur sleuth, Loretta Barksdale loves almost as much as whipping up culinary delights with her group, the Clubhouse Cooks, is eating. So, when the group decides to do a bake sale in their peaceful Breezy Lake, FL, community, she’s all about it.
Things go awry, however, when the brother of one of her friends shows up, looking raggedy and acting oddly. He seems convinced that he’s being pursued, and winds up getting side-eyed by many community members, but Loretta believes that something else might be prompting his strange behavior.
When people actually do show up looking for him, Loretta’s heart goes out to her friend and she slips naturally into mama-bear mode, vowing to discover the truth about what seems to be a dangerous situation.
As she digs deeper to find out what exactly is going on, Loretta finds out something that would make everything much worse, but it just might be the truth.
Can she help her friend and cook up a positive resolution to what might be a scary problem? Or will she just end up getting burned?
A bake off and a family visit end up causing lots of excitement. The bake off is a fund raiser and Pauline and Loretta make it a competition between them to drum up interest. Kelly's brother comes to visit but when Loretta and Harold go on a date they run into Kelly and her brother, he acts like Kelly betrayed him and rushes out, Harold follows and it becomes clear that something is wrong with her brother and he is taken to the hospital where a strange couple shows up at reception with the woman claiming she is Kelly and wanting to go see her brother, Harold intervenes and everything goes straight to chaos. Between break ins, threats and trying to find out who the couple really are it's a real maze of twists, turns and suspense but in the end the truth comes out and the bake off has an unexpected ending. Great read.
This time no one was murdered at the village but there was definitely a remote murder that’d happened at one time or another as Loretta found out when she dug into what could be wrong with Kelly’s brother, Sammy. He’d shown up displaying characteristics of someone overly bothered with something or taking some meds gone wrong. It wasn’t anything like that as things played out and Loretta realized she and Kelly might be in real danger.
The showdown was planned and extremely satisfying as the guilty were outed and taken care of. Sammy had a good ending after all and could rest easy knowing the truth about his boss’s disappearance. Can’t wait to borrow and read the next book!
Loretta has her first public date with Harold so that people would know that they were dating. At dinner she sees her best friend out with Kelly’s brother. From there it takes a sudden turn and the action begins. Lots of twists and turns with a surprise ending. A fun read.
This is such a cute series and this latest book is the best yet. The storyline is unusual and the book is well written. Of course there is a mystery to solve and Loretta jumps in with both feet to help a friend. The characters are a group of seniors although fifty is really pushing the downward limits of the term. Great quick read!
What could possibly go wrong at a bake sale? Unfortunately, a lot as secrets will be discovered in this cozy read,
Loretta will have work cut out as she unravels unwanted secrets that have been hidden. I found it to be a quick paced read that I found to be delightful. I can not wait for the next installment.
So this was not just about baking. But there was a visit from nasty strangers that also caused massive problems. So a few good things happened, and that was a date interrupted. So can they live with the baking results? Can they also live with the fact they are dating? More importantly the cat likes him.
