Paramahansa Yogananda (Bengali: পরমহংস যোগানন্দ Pôromohôngsho Joganondo, Sanskrit: परमहंस योगानंद Paramahaṃsa Yogānaṃda), born Mukunda Lal Ghosh (Bengali: মুকুন্দ লাল ঘোষ Mukundo Lal Ghosh), was an Indian yogi and guru who introduced many westerners to the teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga through his book, Autobiography of a Yogi.
With all that you have, many of you are as miserable with your possessions as you would be without them.
Paramahansa Yogananda, the phenomenal yogi, teaches here in this novel, truths that help us live a truly happy life. This is a book I recommend not only for earnest seekers of truth but also persons who are seeking to live a happier life. Master teachers us that the keys to living a happy life are very simple—> learn to be grateful for whatever life gives you, and reduce all your likes and dislikes. The more you search within (yourself), the more joy you find.
Without inner contentment, even a paradise on earth can become jaded.
This is part of an anthology of collected talks by the beloved Yogi, Paramahansa Yogananda, which includes, The Divine Romance, Man's Eternal Quest and Journey to Self-Realization. They are beyond review. They are what I keep in my own nightstand and what I open during times of trouble. They are what I travel with and what I share with others when authentic spiritual guidance is sought.
These timeless teachings are practical, but wholly genuine. Dear Paramahansa Yogananda is forthright, but loving. He is is eloquent but charming. His grace comes to life in the pages of all three of these treasures. The reader will get out of it what he came for; for any plight, the casual reader can blindly open up to any page and find solace, or encouragement to drop the self-sabotaging bad habits that keep us from the peace and joy we have a right to; the true seeker, whose genuine yearning of the heart will have brought him to these teachings, will find the way to Self-Realization. It is nothing short of a guide to the divine within.

Paramahansa Yogananda is known as an author, for his Autobiography of a Yogi. But this book and its earlier volumes, Man's Eternal Quest and The Divine Romance: Collected Talks and Essays on Realizing God in Daily Life offer insights beyond his autobiography. These talks and essays were delivered by him over a thirty year period and reveal an unparalleled depth of understanding of human nature, God, and the workings of the cosmos. Some of the material from these lectures are incorporated in a set of lessons he created for his organization Self-Realization Fellowship. If the quest for Self-realization interests you, readAutobiography of a Yogi first, but then dive into these three books of his talks.
The book really makes you think of how to better yourself as a human being living in this place called Earth. It offers so much inspiration and motivation to pursue your true path and to follow your heart. A book that is worth re-reading!
This is a wonderful journey. This book contains the essence of our vedas and puranas and bible in a way that is understood by the present generation which has no exposure to any kind of past scriptures and books of knowledge. This book a series of lectures can be read from any page without worrying about sequence! Further it is a book that has to be read again and again and assimilate it into ones actual life practices. A wonderful book for the younger generations which have grown up without any exposure to spirituality. A book that makes spirituality a scientific process. A life long companion.
The first time that I read this book was sometime in 2000 or 2001. It still retained its freshness and power when I "studied" it almost 19 years later. Of course, I shall be reading it again in future.
The English lawyer, courtier, philosopher, and essayist, Francis Bacon, had once said, "Age appears to be best in four things...", and one of the four things he identified was "old authors to read" [Apophthegms New and Old (1625) no. 97]. Paramahansa Yogananda is one of such authors. He is just not a writer but one who is highly qualified to speak to the many human problems in His text.
If we remember what Bacon said in his "Essays (1625) ‘Of Studies’": "Read not to contradict and confute; nor to believe and take for granted; nor to find talk and discourse; but to weigh and consider”, we will derive the maximum benefit from, not "reading" but, perusing the book.
One does not have to read the book cover to cover: one can randomly turn to any chapter, or to even any section in a chapter, yet one will feel inspired and highly motivated.
Although there is, of course, a strong undertow of spirituality in it, the text's uniqueness is, it stands to motivate even Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, the best deniers of God. Curiously, however, it is very non-sectarian in outlook, and reads like a perfect psychology or motivational book written for the 21st century public.
This book will speak directly to the emotions of one who has resigned to fate, and of those who cannot find the success that they have been looking for all their lives, and of people who cannot make sense of all the brouhaha about evils in the world.
In case some of us do not know who Paramahansa Yogananda is --- He is the same author whom Steve Job read until his last sojourn on earth.
This is really simple yet effective information that is esential to all seekers of eastern meditation, yoga and mysticism. But there are also western concepts as well. Yogananda recognized jesus and worshiped god as the emanation behind all souls. Pracitial tips like avoiding meat and drugs are key to mankinds developmens. Next to mohammad, yogananda was one of the greatest to ever live.
I like many books on Eastern spiritual/wisdom traditions like Buddhism and Taoism, but not this one. I'd recently watched a documentary on Yogananda, and this is the first book of his I tried to read. Maybe it wasn't the right one to start with, because I didn't make it through the first chapter. Read like a mad libs of Judeo-Christian terminology.
If you have any doubts related to anything like life, science, relationship, health, spirituality, psychology etc. It will be solved by reading it. Really it's a divine knowledge. Such a great yogi he is. India is proud of you....
A simple and quick read which consolidates the best practices of the East and West on life's universal truths to achieve a life of abundant material riches through humble service.
