Mob Sorcery #1

Mob Sorcery

Rate this book
In a city where magic is as common as air, Vince receives an offer he can't refuse. The local wolffolk mafia long for their glory days and their alluring don, Alessia Lionetti, wants a powerful enforcer to bring them back. That's Vince. This is his big break from his days as a hired thug.

Working for the mafia has a short life expectancy, though. Especially in a world where the masquerade shattered long ago. Demons run banks, birdfolk ferry people across town, and the police possess crack teams of sorcerers to keep the peace. Bad news for Vince and his dreams of mafia wealth.

Not to mention the corrupt mayor backing the mafia's rivals, or that Vince's usual employer doesn't appreciate his moonlighting. Plus, the don's sister is a wild one.

Vince might not become a made man, but his future with the mob will make him or break him.

Not much of a story, no main theme, no secondary story arcs, it's basically a day in the life of a button-man (low-ranking enforcer) and his sensual adventures. Can someone who is really not described physically, has no high-intellect, has no money, has really nothing going for him, be the center of attention of every female in this Urban-fantasy-delusions of sexual adventures of Vince, main character? There is no seduction, no fore-play, no real attraction. Everything is artificial and mediocre.
It has beast-species, has basic magic, but it's really not an adventure book or series. It's like bad porn. Author even writes about doing the laundry, not having enough hot water for a shower, etc. Is this interesting? Not remotely interesting. Because the character's aren't described well, the reader isn't really invested in the hook-ups, the constant sexual adventures of the main character...it's cheap and degrading.
This book has no maps, no inside illustrations, no character summaries, no real world building describing the social, economic, political, religious, systems in place in this alternate reality world. The magical system isn't really explained as well. The author was incredibly lazy in this one, I guess...
I do not recommend this book or the series.

So many things that I would say about this story.... The biggest is that the supporting characters make more sense to me than the MC. Vince is a tool.... I got tired of him really quickly. It's really sad because there was plenty of interesting things to look at in the world the author created. The demihuman species, the culture that exists where human and demihumans overlap...really interesting and well envisioned.

I am so tired of lunkhead main characters who always have to run their mouth for no reason. Maybe it is a generational thing, but the most impressive characters are often those who know when to say nothing at all....

The writing is solid and the worldbuilding was as deep as it should be. The characters are believable and fun. The only exception being the MC who just goes with whatever other people tell him to do. This is very unlike KD so I'm severely confused as to why he wrote this. He never writes such passive MCs who simply get kicked around by hordes of women. I want to support the author but this is the opposite of what I've come to expect from him. Honestly, I'll probably read the next one now that I know what to expect, but it still annoys the hell out of me.

K.D. Robertson has a very distinctive style. To me, I'd say it's defined by extremely strong world building, very very elaborate plots, okay characters, good dialogue, and (almost invariably) kitsune.

If you want a generic hero in a fascinating setting dealing with a mind melting plot while flirting with and sometimes banging a fox girl, then K.D. Robertson has what you're looking for. If not, well...I dunno, why aren't you? It's a good product offering!

Joking aside, this itteration is pretty typical. It's a very well done setting (urban fantasy, magic is real but not especially trusted, and there's a city on the American west coast where most of the magic users and supernatural being concregate, but with some strong cyberpunk vibes), the plot is utterly absurdly complex and intriguing (I won't spoil it, partly because even two books in I have no clue what's going on), the characters are....fine, and there are plenty of lion girls, wolf girls, and, as ever, fox girls with multiple fluffy tails.

I'd strongly recommend the series to anyone who likes K.D. Robertson's other work, and especially to anyone keen on cyberpunk, because even though it's very much not a cyberpunk book, the aethetic and tone is a great match. (Powerful conglomerates, corrupt cops, independent contractors applying violence for corporate ends...)

This was a surprisingly decent read. I like the characters and the world. I was expecting were creatures not monster girls but maybe that is my fault as I didn't read the blurb well enough.

Lots of sexual innuendos throughout the first 3/4 of the book. The only sex scene is graphic, but is very vanilla if a little fem dom-ish.

The egg joke with the harpy got old fast but it appears that the author realized that and ceased. I've got the next book already.

Wolf Mafia, Enforcers, and Urban Goodness

Protagonist is a modern day fixer that can hit a lot harder than he gives himself credit for. He gets hired by a mafia family that's fallen from grace in a city where turf wars are as legal as they are dangerous.

Overall. A lot of great characters, a good amount of action, and several comedic moments topped with a little spice.

A new great series

I find myself eagerly awaiting every book in a series Robertson writes, and this one is no different. I love each and every varied settings and the main characters all have enough unique and interesting features that it's easy to see them as real people.

The newest one focuses on an independent enforcer named vince and his first job away from his previous demonic employers. What follows is a fun tale showcasing an interesting modern world mixed with magic. If you're not familiar with Robertson's other works, this will turn into a harem at some point. I suspect most people will realize fairly quickly, but this is a bit of a slower start to one than some of their other series so it's worth mentioning if that's a major deal breaker to someone.

Overall I can't recommend this enough and suggest reading some of their other series too. Hard to say whether heretic spell blade or demon throne is my favorite series when I love them both, but I could see this edging them out once it gets another book or two.

I had my eye on this for a while. I'm willing to give it a try, but I don't know if I will get another androids want love too... like I got from his other series.

This author really likes fox girls, and girls with "your tits are bigger than my head, how does your back not break?" It's in all his books... "sigh"

This is sad. The author is going the way of William D Arand. He has different books, but they all basically boil down to the same girls, same conversations, and same personalities. Just write a story and forget the smut.

I really don't know if I will read the sequel. The protagonist was a meh for me, and it's the same girl personalities as his other books, with "big tits". Yes it's a different story, but your characters are what makes your story live.

I didn't even like the protagonist's magic. If he was super powerful and fought smarter, I probably wouldn't have a problem giving book two a try. As it is right now, I really don't know.

EDIT: I really enjoyed this story however as I read further in the series I find the MC's actions inconsistent at times with how he deals with the various women to it being even stupid so I went from 4 down to 3 stars as this negatively affect the overall story.

The story, characters and world are interesting and so far not a huge amount of smutty smexy scenes just for the sake of smexy scenes.

I like the LI's like Nina, Nicki and Fia but no so keen on Pola but think Alessia is fine too. My main issue with Pola is she comes across as simply some female version of a violent thug with an abuse rapeish mindset/attitude. Sadly I expect Pola and her sister to be part of the "girls" at some point so I do hope Pola's shit attitude gets corrected as I find she highly detracts from the overall story which would lead me to at some point to putting the next books down to 2 stars.

As for the MC I find he is just a tad too simpy, especially in his later interaction with Pola, when it comes to females a bit like a naive virgin which he clearly shouldn't be according to his background and upbringing.

This was a truly fun read. The MC is a human independent "enforcer", a mage for hire on contract work for various corporate elements to keep their own names out of criminal activities. And he goes from working primarily for a demon group to a wolf group.

The MC is not only believable, but I really liked him, something more rare than I would like in haremlit. Confident, but not to the point of "cocky stupid but I have plot armor" levels that set my teeth on edge. He's not exactly clueless to how various women he meets feel about him, but it's more a care of they aren't a primary focus.

And what a cast of women they are, from the lioness roommate, the various wolf women, the harpy that flies him around, to even the shopkeeper that sells him amazing stuff at a discount, they are all intersting.

The book is well written and edited, and I very much look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Mafia and Magic? sign me up

This was a great read.
The writing was more mature than I expected and each character we meet has their own memorable and unique personality.
None of the women are immaturely head over heels for the MC, but they are attracted. This lead to some interesting tension and build up, and while there was rarely any adult scenes I truly appreciated the pacing up to when we finally got one.
Because everything in between was really entertaining. The world building is done well. It doesn’t shove a lot of new stuff at you. It’s grounded, with it being modern earth but more dystopian in a new city.
Combat is very interesting, with a lot of it being straight brute force with quite a bit of tactical combat woven in.
I’m looking forward to book 2.

I'm be real, I wasn't entirely sold on this new path that K.D is taking, but it's so far really good. I'm halfway through and I don't see it getting any worse but I'm excited to read more.

I'll edit this review If I dislike it but this is a very fun world, fun world building and I like his interactions with the side characters.

I had read K.D's older stuff recently having ran out of his books like demon's throne and I wasn't impressed, if felt really bad compared to his neural wraith and spellblade books, I'm happy to say mob sorcery joins those two as solid books and I want more asap! Keep it up mate.

I enjoyed myself thoroughly.

Currently at 18 percent. The cast so far is ver diverse with clear reasoning for the way they behave. Also, very, very tall girl if that is your thing. So far, the magic seen system is very different than traditional systems to me. But I am not knowledgeable about this. I would say I am very eager to read the author other series now.

EDIT. 50 percent done. Nina is such a pleasure to read. I am going to be buying the other book and the cyberpunk one, too. The female characters are very enjoyable. Never thought 7 foot plus little bit possessive lioness was something I needed.😳 seriously, everyone has personality and charm. They also have flaws, but those flaws are realistic to me. Seriously, this is so good to me.

I FINISH. I will buy book 2 and only one explicit, but it was very good. Though I think it was a bit short.

The mafia setting doesn't really work for me. That it's a mafia of only "horny wolf girls" makes it worse. The real problem, though, is that I don't really like any of the characters. Vince is a weird, inconsistent mix of aggressive/passive, experienced/ignorant and weak/powerful. I don't have the highest expectations of the female characters in this genre, but usually, there are a handful of complex, interesting women in at least the early books of a series. In this case, Alessia might be the closest to that, but overall, they all seem to start out as haremlit caricatures.

This series is a miss for me.

This is my second KDR series and I thought it was cool, if on a smaller scale than Heretic Spellblade so far. Set in the magic city, Aulfair, WA, our MC is an independent human “enforcer” that decides to take a job for the wolfgirl mafia. All the conflict centers on the interactions and shenanigans of the various conglomerates and criminal organizations in the city. It appears that this will be an all-monster girl harem as the only human women have been nameless thugs. So far Nina is best girl by far. I also like V as the protagonist as he isn’t OP and really his only claim to fame is his moderately above average strength in combat fire magic. I look forward to seeing where this story goes.

Great starting point.

Kd robertson is fantastic at creating another world and this is another great world he has created.
This one is not as serious as his others but so enjoyable and the characters.

I love the character's interaction with one another, the humour was done so well.

If you have not read a Robertson book before I say this is a great starting point.
I definitely recommend it.

Another Great Series Beginning

As always K.D. builds a creative, structured magic system with a very interesting world surrounding. I enjoyed this one a whole lot. Not quite as spicy as Demon's Throne or Heretic Spellblade, but a much more structured society and less "We're facing/recovering from the end of the world" gives us a chance to wonder at how our character will find his way through the world. Looking forward to the next installation.

Whew

If you like this author you’ll like this book. I don’t entirely dislike his books but they’re always about 80% buildup and 20% something is actually happening. Granted that 20% is usually really good, but you’ve got to make it to it. Spoilers: this book is almost exclusively lore/setting explanation until about 60% of the way through, and the last 40% has more distributed action and of course more setting up.

It's a good start to a new series, solid worldbuilding and characters. I liked that the relationship progression was slowish... gives you time to know all the characters. I like Vince as the MC, he is an enforcer who acts like his part(even though he is strong), respects the hierarchy, thinks about the consequences before jumping into the fray.

Majority of the book was setting up the world and its lore (which might be slow for some people) and the last 30-40% is where the action and plot takes place. With most of the setup covered in the first book I hope the plot picks up the pace from second book onwards.

This hit all the right notes.

The general vibe Robertson's books have works perfectly with the mafia angle. Using the setting to differentiate groups keeps everything clean without relying on stereotypes. The different characters, the plot hints, it all is a wonderful start to a series.

Great story line.

Robertson as created some grate characters in this book. His story line started with a great graphic seen and continued on. There are so many sides in conflict with each other that the story takes many turns and there is some comedy involved mostly our reluctant protagonist is the butt of most it. Looking forward for the next release.

Another awesome story!!!

In my opinion everything this author writes is definitely worth reading!!! Another awesome story with dynamic and powerful women from interesting "monster girls" categories!!! I truly enjoyed the pace and the twists in turns of what type of family the MC is building!!! I can't wait to see what comes next!!!

great start to hopefully a long running series

When I read neural wraith I thought K.D was on point now with mob sorcery… I am thrilled. Keep them coming the concept I thought was odd at times with measured responses but the story kept moving it never felt stale, I did want perhaps more alessia chapters what with she thought of V and his shows of force ^^

what an incredible book 1

I’ve only read 1 other book series from this author, but if this is the standard quality they put out, I’ll have to read them all. Fun characters, cool fights, interesting magic system and enjoyable relationships between characters makes this an easy purchase for me.

Loved it!

What a great first book, interesting characters and settings. Lots of room for growth with his dad not being in the picture and people being surprised how strong he is, hoping this means he isn't fully human and can get a bit of a power boost as the new enemies coming week even stronger!

Solid start to a new series. I like the protagonist, and appreciate that he's a relatively normal person (you know, for a spellcasting mob enforcer), and the supporting cast are interesting.
The story moved at a good pace, the spellcasting action was fun and well described, and the book ended in a great place.
I'm looking forward to the next one.

I came to this book looking for some kinda trashy fantasy smut but stayed for a surprisingly entertaining gangland story that wasn't completely overshadowed by sex scenes. The setup is a little convoluted with the gangs and corporations thing and there's more than a few inconsistencies in the world building but despite that I'm still going to re-read it at some point.

Wonderful

Yup. Yup. This is yet another great novel by an author who just keeps getting better. Every series is a progression, from n the settings, to the characters, to the pacing. I live this story and where its going. Can't wait for the next.

This far, there is nothing the Robertson has written that I haven't enjoyed. Well written and well thought out stories with excellent pace and multi dimensional characters. Now, I just have to wait again for the next story...

Vince tries to do well. Now that has blown up in his face. Another good one from K. D. Robertson. Fun MC and supporting characters. Good fun start, that appears to be a good bit of a well thought out plot. Can't wait for the next installment.
