Jessy's Dad has recently remarried a woman named Marly who has a son named Matt. Both Jessy and Matt are pre-teens, Jessy younger. They live in an apartment in Wichita but Marly was originally from San Antonio, Texas.

Very shortly into the story, Marly's great uncle Matthew passes away, leaving her a big house, all the furniture, a parrot, and some embroidery squares, but no money.

The parrot, Goldie talks and his phrases seem to be just copies of things he heard that together don't mean much until everyone puts together the clues.
