This is a must read book for researchers and academics!
There are many writings from Australian researcher inside of it, but some of Indonesian writers are also joined in, one of them is Goenawan Muhammad

A broad overview of the political changes and turmoil that has embroiled the nation-state of Indonesia over the last 1/2 century. Detailed review of economic and religious history as well. A bit dated (published almost 20 years ago) and a lot has happened since then. Still a good analytical volume.
