All Ellie Rodriguez wants is a quiet, magic-free life. Witchcraft is under attack, and Ellie knows if anyone were to discover her craft, she would be sent to the nearest courthouse in cuffs. Playing normal was easy at first, but when her boyfriend is found dead in the woods, she does the only thing she can do—resurrect him.
When River Mathews discovers a body has gone missing from the morgue, he doesn’t expect to see it driving around the next day. He especially doesn’t expect to see it kiss the most beautiful woman he’s ever seen. He wants to forget it, pretend like nothing happened, but River has a gift. One that makes him realize the dead man’s girlfriend is in trouble.
Now Ellie is dealing with winged creatures stalking her, her boyfriend’s mysterious behavior, and the unexpected arrival of a nosy medical examiner with a penchant for saving people. Fate keeps bringing Ellie and River together, but the closer she gets to River, the more she questions her choice. River is hell-bent on rescuing her from her resurrected boyfriend, but will she heed his warning? Or is she in too deep to reverse the spell?
Sula Alba is a paranormal romance author living in the deserts of the Southwest. When not writing, she loves to photograph her cat in laying the sun, baking and reading.
I am stunned by this story. From the very beginning Sula did a beautiful job of captivating the reader and taking them for a thrilling and witchy ride. I loved the Mexican themes and references as a Latina woman myself. But overall the story?! This freaking story was unlike anything I’ve read and it was perfect. It’s a slow burn, with plenty of mystery, thrill and build up. Ellie’s story was enchanting from the beginning. I loved it!
I’m not one to write book reviews often (I’m more of a rater) but seeing as this book has no reviews I couldn’t resist being the first. I was hoping to read a fun witchy book now that the temps are getting cooler, what I got was more than I expected. This book is more about grief. About the ways it makes you stick to people and situations that still hurt you because you can’t stand to lose anyone else. It’s a love story too, and I did enjoy the romance and the aspects of found family in the book. But honestly it hit me in my grief, and I could see myself in Ellie and the decisions she made. She’s not perfect, but then I was messy too in my grief.
The pacing was a bit off. Like break neck speed, I almost didn’t get a break. I wish there were a few more spicy scenes, so I would characterize this book more as romance instead of like erotica.
But I really enjoyed it and I hope there are with some if the other witches introduced in the book.
This slow burn book draws you in from page one. Ellie is a wayward witch living in a dystopian future where witchcraft is persecuted again. A death has Ellie using her powers for good? for bad? or love? read this amazing book that will have you hooked till the very end.
