Verona doesn't believe in Hell when her life is already a living one. After all, she's underemployed, reeling from a harsh breakup, and her graduate degree is slipping through her fingers.
As if her life can't get any worse, a mishap with a cursed grimoire sends her to Limbo where she finds out that she's the reincarnation of the witch responsible for condemning Lo–the Archdemon of Wrath–to Limbo until the curse is broken.
With death looming over Verona's head and a bargain burned into her skin, Verona agrees to help Lo before his patience runs out. But as Verona digs for answers, attraction between her and Lo spikes, secrets are unearthed, and untapped magic itches in her veins.
[I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. PUB DAY: 13 OCTOBER. Thank you B. Nacole]
Verona is a plus size bi unconscious witch living a miserable life until she gets into Limbo where she meets Lo, the cursed Archdemon. It's a bit of a Persephone and Ades meets the Beauty and the Beast
What I liked: - the name of the FMC, Verona (been born around there I feel the attachment) - Verona: quite the spitfire - Lo: the ultimate SBD™ (Stern Brunch Daddy) and Dirty Talker - familiars! Nova the hellcat and Clotho the hound - s3x scenes are 🔥 (one FFM) and the shadows! - the FMC's position on kids 😁
What left me lukewarm: - I really didn't get the relationship between them, beside the arousal I didn't get their motives, or Lo's specifically, and I didn't really get why a few things happened expect for the 🔥 of it, which is ok but left me puzzled - dialogues would need some smoothening
But I did want to know what happened with the curse, and what with the two. And I might be curious about the rest of the archdemons.
tbh i really wanted to love this book, the story sounded interesting, the characters fun, it all looked good… until i started reading.
it was just sooooo slow, i felt like absolutely nothing happened, and this seems more to be a me problem than a book problem because people like it! but yeah…
i just thought there was no plot. i was super bored up until page 200, then i was into it, then at like 240 i got bored again.
i also felt like nothing was explained, and it’s true i could have missed stuff, but i was just super confused the whole time.
also… the writing. look i read a lot of poorly edited books, and if the plot is pretty good i can usually overlook it. but for this book i felt like i was finding grammar or spelling errors on every other page.
this isn’t to say i disliked the book, a lot of sections i found pretty interesting, and the overall premise was good! but the amount of times i considered not finishing this book was… very high. i did get through it tho and i’m glad i did! but yeahhh
There were so many sexily addicting moments between these two! I liked the relationship between Verona and Lo, but I felt like it was a little stunted. There was no smooth over between finding each other super annoying and then making out. No wonder Verona was a little unbearingly insecure.
I also felt like their reunion from a miscommunication didn't feel well thought out enough. It was kind of rushed in my opinion.
However, I thought the book world was so fun and I loved learning about how the author wrote witches and the archdemons. OH THE ARCH DEMONS WERE SO FUN!
Overall, this was a fun and steamy read and can't wait to learn more about the book of Limbo!
Disclaimer: I was part of the beta team for this book, but this is my first time reading it ever since it was published.
Humor me, Starling. It's stationary and this means you can stop stealing my pens. It's a mutually beneficial situation.
Some people are really just out there, living my dream, huh?
IN THE COMFORT OF SHADOWS is B. Nacole's adult debut in the paranormal romance category and it fits her like a glove, gently sliding into place next to other fun, exciting, and seductive adventures.
Perfect for fans of: - Nuisances to Lovers - Plus Size FMCs - Queer normative speculative-worlds - "Who did this to you?" trope - Repressed magic trope - Cozy Café and delicious descriptions that leave you hungry for brunch
In ItCoS we meet Verona, a tired (almost) grad student who's behind on debt, has a shitty ex-boyfriend, and is about to lose all of her scholastic work when the world suddenly swallows her whole after an encounter with a book and a dagger.
Don't all fairy tale romances start out similarly?
After being inserted into Limbo, we meet an array of vast, different, and complicated archdemons that rule the realm with a more-than-lax fist and among them, we get our MMC, Lo, the archdemon of Wrath. (Shadow Daddy!) and all of his deliciously angsty baggage.
One of the shining aspects of this novel, that worked perfectly in tandem together with its other attribute, was the setting. Limbo is such a vibrant, fun, unique, and diverse place with its paranormal influences mixed in with its retro-future style neon lights aesthetic, that it all eventually coalesces into a big, beautiful sprawling scenery, making the reader wish they lived there as well. (Don't even get me started on The Lucky Raven, I'm so fucking bummed it doesn't exist IRL)
But the real star of the show is Verona-- sweet, anxious, feisty, messy, loving Verona. With her purple hair, razor-sharp attitude, and loving personality underneath it all, it's no wonder that I gravitated toward her as a character, and I'm positive any reader will too. She's damaged, adding extra layers of complexity to a character that could have been one-dimensional and bland, but if B. Nacole knows how to do anything with expertise, is to make a main female character with a lot of agency and everything to lose, creating one of the most dynamic and engaging protagonists that I've read all year.
Spoiler Note: But can I take a moment to gush about the amazing decision to not "reform" Verona or make her "be the bigger person" and that the author actually allowed us the satisfaction of watching Verona reclaim her life from the one person who took it all away and hurt her the most-- fuck you 5ever, Daniel.
The romance between her and Lo is also excellent, perfectly blending into the nuisances-to-lovers trope with a dash of "You vex me quite greatly" until the first time that Lo ever calls her Starling-- that's when Verona (even if she doesn't know it yet) and the reader is caught in this for the long run, wanting to see where and how these two messed up, intricate and complicated people make their situation work, amidst demons, curses, witches and blood.
All in all, IN THE COMFORT OF SHADOWS is a warm pastry made for you by someone you love. It is the soft blanket to hug you on a cold fall night as you get ready for an incantation or two on your own-- you never know what lurks in the dark. It's vibrant, sexy, and thoroughly enjoyable as you experience a hellish romance unlike many others.
5 out of 5 stars, no questions asked. I can't wait for what awaits us in this world in the future.
I read In the Comfort of Shadows for a book tour hosted by the author, B. Nacole, and Bound By Mischief Author Services. Thank you to both for inviting me along and for the gifted e-arc. I thoroughly enjoyed this dark, spicy, romantic ride.
This story takes Verona on a journey physically, emotionally, and mentally. Her life was already a mess and then she touched an ancient artifact which pulled her into Limbo, surrounded by archdemons. Having no idea how she got there and no idea how she would get back home, she did the only thing she could. She made a bargain. And her life was changed forever.
Lo, the Archdemon of Wrath, sees a way to possibly break the curse holding him in Limbo. He didn’t expect Verona, though. Sparks start to fly that neither one wants. She has untapped magic that is begging to come out. Can she truly be the one that will actually break the curse or will they break each other in the process?
While Verona and Lo are working together in order to break the curse, they are each working through their individual issues. Verona has anger and low esteem stemming from a bad relationship. She can’t bring herself to think that Lo wanted her for anything more than a means to an end. She wouldn’t allow herself to even think of that possibility. And, Lo had done things in his past that he couldn’t let go of. He refused to think he was worthy of happiness…just doomed for eternity. I love their banter. It was frustrating, though, that Verona never lets Lo finish a sentence. So much miscommunication could’ve been avoided. I liked how they started to bond and where their relationship was going.
The spice is pretty hot. There are a few kinks represented and they are well-written. These explicit scenes fit with the story, too. Shadow play…oh my! You can tell when things are just thrown in for ratings or shock value. This had none of that. It was perfectly written for this story.
The build up to the ending had me on pins and needles. There are some twists and WTF moments. It’s just so good.
In the Comfort of Shadows is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I recommend it to fans of fantasy romance, dark fantasy romance, spicy romance, plus-size FMC, repressed magic, touch her and die, archdemons, shadow play, and enemies-to-lovers.

𝓒𝓸𝓶𝓶𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼: This book took me a little bit to get into but I enjoyed reading it. I absolutely loved the storyline and I loved Verona and Lo even more.
I really loved the other characters as well, especially the other Archdemons. However, I wish there was a little bit more character building for them and a little more world building in the beginning. I knew much about Verona but not enough about Lo and his history along with the other characters.
The banter between Verona and Lo was my absolute favorite. I LOVED how feisty she was. She had a terrible attitude and tbh I can relate lol He was just the grumpiest of grumps and the fact that she found that attractive…I can also relate 😂
I loved how this book touched on body image issues and insecurities but what made it even better was that everyone did what they could to make Verona feel beautiful in her skin.
I will say the ending did feel a bit rushed but I definitely still recommend. 🩶
In this totally spellbinding fantasy novel, the author crafts a story that's all kinds of enchanting and steamy. Picture a slow burn that's like Mariana Zapata but with a fresh twist, where Verona, a broke research student, stumbles into the realm of shadows, encountering the Demon King of Wrath, Lo, and his seven sins squad. Verona's journey of self-discovery through Lily's Grimoire brings out a ton of sexual tension and slow-burning passion.
Special shoutout to the reimagined Cerberus, bringing a whole new vibe to this mythical creature. This book flips the script on traditional Hades and Persephone tales, offering a unique and engaging experience.
In a nutshell, this fantasy novel delivers on the promise of steamy scenes and slow burn romance while throwing in a curveball with its inventive take on a classic myth. The author's creativity shines through, making it a must-read for fans of the genre. The burning question of whether Verona can break the curse keeps you hooked till the very end, delivering a narrative that's equal parts thrilling and emotionally resonant
Thank you so so much to the author and Bound By Mischief for letting me read an ARC copy of this book!!!
"I'm Astra, Archdemon of Pride, and I have some news," Astra offered a fangy smile. "Wel-come to Hell."
"If you don't go, it will only feed into their presumed contempt. Give them what they want, then be worse. Do you understand?"
I loved it!!! This book was perfect for the spooky season!!! A very steamy paranormal romance book with witches and demons and a relationship that starts with an enemies to lovers and then the forced proximity turns it into something so much more !!! Verona is stuck with a witch’s soul and now she has to face the high demons of hell whose power that witches had stolen: Lo, the demon of wrath. This book was so good!!! The tension between the characters was so good, you can’t help but being sucked into the story without being able to stop !!! Also Lo … that man is just sooo good!!!! It’s incredible how sweet and frustrating and hot and handsome he can be!!!! Also, just so we are clear, the relationship configuration is not only MF … so check that one out !!!! I had such fun going through this book. Fun and spice and some painful moments to go through!!! Really really good !!!! And I loved the HEA !!! Not even the third act break up could lead me down !!!
"Because I happen to enjoy it when you're scowling and scheming at others,"
Verona's life is a complete and utter mess. Her degree is in the tubes, she's trying to overcome a really bad break-up, and is barely making ends meet. Seemingly nothing can get worse in her life; that is until she touches an ancient grimoire and finds herself sucked into Hell--literally. Here she discovers a unique secret about her existence, and learns that she (along with Lo, the Archdeacon of Wrath) are destined to break an ancient curse.
The premise of this story is super intriguing--I love the use and incorporation of ancient artifacts that are spelled as otherworldly portals. I also felt like the lore of the story/world was well built and intriguing. Verona is really insecure, and I wish she became a little more confident as the story progressed--I'm guessing that her character will continue to develop throughout the story. I also wasn't fully sold on the relationship between Verona and Lo--the spice was GREAT and really spicy (Lo can TALK), but I felt like I wanted a little more depth to their relationship. I also am not a huge fan of when an FMC just jumps into a relationship when they're still trying to heal from a previous relationship.
Aside from these hangups, I felt the story was written well and the plot was intriguing. I am invested enough to read the second book in order to figure out what happens with Verona, Lo, and the curse.
This book had me leaning between choosing three and four stars, but I went with the four stars because I wanted to know more about the world that Nacole has created and for me, wanting to be in a world and learn about it is a big part of my rating scale. This was a very interesting spin on a human crossing the threshold of Death to discover their fated mate. I liked that this was not a carbon copy of the Hades and Persephone Myth and that it avoided being a straightforward reinterpretation of that story, rather this was one that took inspiration from that original tale and then went off in its own direction. I did want a little more development of Lo’s character to be honest, I enjoyed his character but I felt like there was something more just under the surface. This is where I opted for the higher rating because I believe this is something the final edit of the book may have addressed. With that being said, I would read this book now that it’s published and I would love to see this story continued, maybe being picked up with another demon to bring the full power of this world to bear. I really enjoyed this read and will be checking out future books by Nacole
I thought this book had some very interesting elements to it! It involves the 7 deadly sins as Archdemons who rule over Limbo, one of which (our MMC) was cursed by a witch and can only be freed by her reincarnation - our FMC, a struggling woman who finds herself plummeting into limbo without any knowledge of being a witch. I am a sucker for enemies to lovers, but this story felt a bit rushed in places and I feel like it was missing that smooth transition from enemies to lovers; however, it did not hinder the unfolding of their relationship too much. Verona and Lo’s chemistry was steamy and Lo gives hella Shadow Daddy vibes! I wish we would’ve gotten to know the other Archdemons a little better but from what we are given, I liked their characters. The build up to the end of the story low key made me anxious and I was trying to speed read to find out what happens next! The reconciliation between Lo and Verona after their disagreement also seemed a bit rushed but it ended on a good note and I was overall pleased with the ending! A great read for sure!.

I just want to say, before anything, I truly loved this story. That being said, this book was a challenge to read. The characters were amazing, the spice was top tier, but over all it felt like a rough draft of what could be an incredible book. Less than half way through, I was really starting to wonder if the author ever utilized an editor. Quite a bit of the dialog was disjointed enough I had to rely mostly on context clues or simply disregard entire conversations because trying to puzzle things together based on what was said was nearly impossible. I also don’t think that the conflict toward the end was fleshed out enough to justify the main characters response to it. That felt like a recurring theme though, things not being fleshed out enough to make sense or to feel complete. There’s a lot of things I wish could be improved upon. I would have loved to read what this stunning story could be with more writing, more clear direction and better editing.
originally i started reading this book because i found the premise to be interesting, and i liked the main character verona. however, i cannot get over the fact that because it’s ridiculous, given the fact that the book is only three hundred pages long. this is an example of how the pacing seemed inconsistent, as it starts off as almost glacial and ends on a break-neck speed, which i guess was to fit in all of the intimacy scenes. i feel like i missed some explanations about certain things as well. i did like all of the archdemons though, and wished that there were more scenes with them just hanging out with each other, just so that i could gleam more about the dynamics of each relationship.
Okay, so for the most part, I liked it. There was some hilarious characters, some great sex and then tension. Wow.
I liked Verona and Lo and their story was a pretty fun read, but I have to admit that it took me a bit to get into it. When I started, I found Verona a little bit unbearable. She was annoying and whiny, and I was actually quite close to DNF-ing. However, I’m more than happy I pushed through and by about the middle, I was much more invested. Nova, though, is my absolute favorite in this. Who doesn’t want a cute and cuddly Hellcat?
Thank you Voracious Readers and B. Nacole for my copy! I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All above thoughts and opinions are my own.
I find a lot of comfort in Verona as an anxious character with her life falling apart around her. Limbo is new and somewhat terrifying at first but also a chance at a new beginning. I love the worldbuilding, that Limbo is a blend of old and modern but in it's own unique way, and that it's a place that would feel comforting for someone like Verona even if it's not always welcoming. The dynamic between her and Lo is hot (let's be honest I wanted to punch him but I was also barking) and it's very satisfying when their flirting bears fruit. All in all, a fun and hot read that scratches the asshole to lover itch.

Review:
I love a relatable and realistic FMC, and Verona certainly is. As someone who can struggle in new and unknown situations and settings, Verona was someone readers who struggle with anxiety can empathize with.
Limbo is a place I could add to my list of worlds I would like to visit, much like the worlds of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Celestial Haven.
The banter, tension and interactions between Verona and Lo were absolutely chef’s kiss.
Will I be reading this again? Yes. Will I be reading more by the author, also yes!

This was an intriguing book, with demons and witches. A portal to another world and a big shadow daddy A curse that needs to be broken but no one know how. An FMC without the usual standards, curvy, neglected by her parents abused verbally by her ex-boyfriend and with a lot of insecurities. A demon that hated the idea of her but was captivated by her presence and her personality and showed her that she was worth everything. Some plot Twists in the middle and we have an awesome story.
I want to thank the author B. NACOLE and BBM tours for my copy of this book in exchange for my review.
I enjoyed this read. It was fun. Verona is a very relatable character. I love how she is a bi, plus sized witch. I enjoyed watching her grow throughout the book. Lo was a character I did not know if I liked him or not. Their relationship just did not make sense to me besides the sexual attraction. I enjoyed the storyline. It is perfect spooky season read
What a great book! I loved Nacole's writing style. It was refreshing and unique to anything I've read in a while. It was so easy to read and follow along with the story, her world-building was great though I did find in certain situations, I wished for a little bit more detail, but it was still really well done. The spicy scenes were on point, and ughh the dark elements ♥
A great read for fans of dark fantasy! I highly recommend it!
This book has both good and bad. The story was fun and unique. The supporting characters were a wonderful addition to the book. In fact I wish we could have had more time with them. Unfortunately the book never really flushed out. The FMC is the most unlikable person. She is mean and selfish and I found myself rooting against her. I don't know if I will read anymore from this author because I disliked her lead female so much.
Definite spice for those who really like a lot. Some kink. Great characters. Lo and Verona go well together with all of their angst to deal with. Definitely well written without gratuitous spice. It felt real. Twists and turns.

I wish this book had a better cover because the book wasn’t entirely what I thought it would be, but it was way better. It’s super spicy. I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other. I wasn’t bored for even a second with this book, so it was worth the read. 4 out of 5 stars.
This was just so bad and I feel awful for saying this because there was so much potential. Things didn’t make sense throughout the book to the point where I had to go back and reread parts multiple times because I was convinced I missed something that would explain what was going on. But nope. Just bad.
Did I understand the magic system or anything about the curse/Lily? No.
Did I care? Also no. I was just here for a good time.
I was so entertained and had a great time reading it. I wish I knew more about the world because honestly if this had been more detailed and fleshed out, it would have been 5 stars.
In all honesty, I was torn between two and three stars when it came to rating this book. I finally settled on three as the copy I received was an ARC and therefore some of the issues I had may be mended in the final copy. [Note: the aforementioned ‘issues’ are mainly grammatical and structural.]
In the Comfort of Shadows is an easy read that I would recommend for anyone who is new to the dark fantasy genre. The plot is easy to follow and the erotic scenes are enjoyable but don’t lean too far into the ‘dark’ side of things. The characters are easy to fall for and their well rounded creation is the main reason I was drawn towards three stars rather than two. Everything about each of the characters was well thought out which allows them to feel realistic.
With that being said, I feel as if the plot is missing something. We’re given everything needed for the plot to flow but whilst reading I couldn’t help but feel as if a piece of information was just out of reach the entire time and that even by the end, it eluded me. This book felt like finishing a puzzle only to find that there was one piece missing from the box.
I had a really hard time putting this book down! I love enemies to lovers, one of my top tropes and this was spectacular. The characters were perfect, I didn't like V at first but grew to enjoy her. I hope there will be more to this story!
3.5 stars This was just such a fun book. It really tosses you right into things and then just keeps going. It was a super quick read. I won't say too much else on it because really if the blurb interests you and you want a really fun time then this is for you.
This book has so much potential, but at the moment, it just really didn't land with me. I will revisit it in the future and looking to see if other works by B. Nacole are more up my alley.

Please check CW and TW before starting this one. Verona’s life is a chaotic mess and it’s about to get even more crazy. If you enjoy fantasy books that have amazing imagery this one is a must read imo.
A confusing mess of a story… I can’t even say that plot was sacrificed for smut because even that was lacking. There was also a number of typos and grammatical errors throughout which made it even more confusing to follow at times.
