The high school show choir Paige Marshall has been coaching has been invited to the national finals in Nashville. She expects that only complication will be the career making audition back home in Chicago she’s been invited to in the middle of the competition. But that’s before someone sabotages all the team’s costumes and band instruments. Then a murder takes place. Can Paige figure out what is going on?

It's been years since I read the first two books in this series, but I was soon back in Paige’s world thanks to reminders in the text about what had happened before. Some of them do get spoilery, so keep that in mind if you are interested in the series. Thanks to the references, I was able to fully appreciate the character growth in the regulars we saw here. The new characters were just as strong. The plot was good and kept me guessing. I was surprised by a sub-plot that took over in the final quarter, completely slowing down the momentum. But we are then flung back into the mystery for a climax that had me turning pages while it successfully wrapped everything up. It also wrapped up these characters’ arcs, so fans of this series will be able to walk away satisfied with the time we’ve spent with them.

This third installment of the Glee Club Mystery series finds Paige and her show choir, Music in Motion, Nashville bound to participate in the National Show Choir Competition. Everyone is along for the ride: Larry the musical director, Devlyn the drama teacher and co-choreographer (and Paige’s quasi boyfriend), Jim the band director, Paige’s Aunt Millie, Millie’s boyfriend Aldo, even Aunt Millie’s dog Killer. Both Paige’s and the choir’s reputations have preceded them, and they are immediately given the cold shoulder by a volunteer, LuAnn. A short time later most of the teams’ costumes are found shredded, and LuAnn immediately accuses Paige of sabotage. Then a light bar falls on the competition stage during a rehearsal, and LuAnn’s accusations fly again in Paige’s direction, and LuAnn insists that Music in Motion be disqualified. No one can figure out why LuAnn has it in for Paige, but the head of the competition, Christine, tries to rein LuAnn in and refuses to renounce Paige’s choir. Finally, Paige finds LuAnn dying behind the performing arts center, an apparent victim of a hit and run.

So Paige has problems. She is briefly a suspect in LuAnn’s death. One of her soloists has a sore throat that is affecting her voice. All of her school’s costumes and band instruments are being stored in her hotel room, making it very crowded. In an effort to discourage any rumors about inappropriate student relations, Devlyn continues to display a gay persona to the world, and this makes his relationship with Paige rather complicated. There are whispers about the school board extending her contract, but she is really hoping that her performing career will take off. And, to make a busy week even more tightly scheduled, Paige’s manager informs her that she must be back in Chicago for an audition for the Lyric Opera or her singing career prospects are toast.

Christine asks Paige to investigate the sabotage because she is afraid all of the “accidents” they have been experiencing will scare the sponsors away. She actually seems more concerned with the money than the students. Paige wonders if the sabotage and LuAnn’s death are related. There are plenty of suspects for Paige to look into, including several other choir coaches, Christine, and Kelly, the competition’s assistant director.

I enjoy this series since it combines two of my loves, mystery and music. As an operatic singer and former choir and band member, I can relate to the trials and joys Paige and company go through. I think Charbanneau does a good job of leading the reader through all aspects of competition. I appreciate how Paige’s attitude has changed, from reluctant teacher to really caring about the kids, as the series progresses. I find Paige amusing. For example, the very first paragraph of the book had me chuckling to myself.

“A singer knows she’s arrived when a limo picks her up and whisks her off to a luxurious hotel, where she’s greeted by hundreds of roses and cards wishing her well before her starring performance the next night. The fact that I currently rode in a yellow school bus with duct-taped vinyl seats, surrounded by a bunch of high school kids hopped up on sugar on the way to a Holiday Inn, spoke volumes about the career choices I had made.” (p. 1)

The author writes well, and her characters continue to grow with each book. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged in the mystery, and all of the suspects blend well together. The romance aspect of the book is realistic and adds a layer to the story. A small criticism: there is a sub mystery concerning a stack of boxes and their contents that is not resolved to my satisfaction. Readers who do not care to know all about costumes, rehearsals, competition politics, and the stresses of performing may find this book a bit tedious. For me, it brings back memories. Recommended for lovers of music, the movie Pitch Perfect, and the TV show Glee.

Joelle Charbonneau is on a roll with the third book in the Glee Club mystery series, A Chorus Lineup. Cozy fans who love music will really enjoy the Show Choir from Prospect High and their director Paige Marshall. It's a combination of the hit television series, Glee and the movie Pitch Perfect with a murder thrown in for good measure. Full of action, twists and turns galore and a red herring or two, this cozy will appeal to readers and music lovers a like. A great addition to the series!

What I liked:

The theme for this cozy series is a lot of fun. Singing groups of all kinds from acapella to those with instrumentalists have become all the rage with successful television shows and movies, and now Joelle Charbonneau is bringing it to cozy readers as well. I loved all the information about the rehearsals and costumes and all of the behind the scenes stories. I thought it was a great theme and somewhat unique. The idea that the director is waiting for her big break is also a fun element to the story.

Paige is quit the sleuth, and in this one she is definitely a person of interest in the murder. She has a beef with the lady who becomes the victim, LuAnn. When she is accused of cutting up costumes and causing trouble at a competition she and her choir are attending. I liked the way that Charbonneau set up the murder in order to make Paige look possibly guilty. It gave the book an edge that was enjoyable. Wondering whether it was going to get better instead of worse for the heroine gave it an urgency we haven't had before in this series.

The mystery aspects were well written. There were plenty of suspects besides Paige and once she convinces Christine it wasn't her, she goes about finding a killer. There were a few unexpected twists and turns that had me going for awhile, but eventually it figured it out close to the end. I thought the motive a wee bit predictable, but that didn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the book.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Paige's big audition turns out as well as her relationship with Devlyn and with Mike. Changes are around the corner it appears and I can't wait to see what happens next.

What I didn't like:

Not too much to report here. I do admit that I wonder how much potential there is for this to be a long running series. The motive for this one was slightly predictable and I wonder how many more musically related ideas the author can come up with. A ton, I hope. This is a great series.

Bottom Line:

If you haven't tried this series yet, I think you will be pleasantly surprised, especially if you are a music lover. A Chorus Lineup is a fun cozy read with a personal touch.

Title: A Chorus Lineup

Series: Glee Club Mystery #3

Synopsis (from bn.com):

Paige Marshall is back in the spotlight in Joelle Charbonneau’s newest Glee Club Mystery. My thoughts: I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this cozy mystery series! The books in this series just keep getting better and as I finished this one (which basically just came out), I was already online looking if I could find info on the 4th book in the series and when it would come out – no such luck, but I will keep a look out!!

Bare with me as I know my reviews on this series may sound the same, but some of these factors bear repeating.

As a musician myself, I was very skeptical about this series when it first came out in the cozy genre. I was fearful that it was going to be an overly cheesy version of the TV show “Glee” meets cozy mystery genre . . . but hear me that it is NOT, NOT, NOT, this in any way. It is a well-written, fun, humorous story of a high school show choir in the suburbs of Chicago and one of their directors, Paige Marshall, an opera singer who is waiting for her big break in the opera world.

I love the characters in this series . . . I love Paige’s humor, the relationships between the characters (which in this book get very, very interesting, please tell me more)! The kids in the show choir are great . . . and overall the mystery plots are well written and just plain fun to read.

As a musician/music therapist living in this very area, I just love recognizing some of the places she describes and feel like I am there.

Keep up the great work Joelle Charbonneau, and I beg of you . . . write more in this series, faster :)

Overall, a great, fun cozy mystery series that will make you very glad you picked up the book! Go get them now! You won’t regret it.

I think I'd like anything Joelle Charbonneau wrote! I really liked her Rebecca Robbins series, which is on at least temporary hiatus and this one is even better! Wonderful, well drawn characters and terrific story. Will be interesting to see what happens with Paige in the next one with the way this one ended. Just as an aside, if you also enjoy YA, Ms. Charbonneau's The Testing trilogy - the first 2 are available now, the 3rd comes in June of this year - is well worth a read! RECOMMEND!

great trilogy

Reading this reminds me of high school and our chorus. We didn’t call it show choir, but the feeling was the same.

The Prospect Glen Glee Club, Music in Motion, is in Nashville for a National Show Choir competition. They have the talent. They have the heart. Nothing can stop Prospect Glen’s choir from taking home the trophy. But below the soaring voices, there are murmurs of suspicion. So-called accidents keep befalling the other choirs. Dollycas’s Thoughts
This a fun cozy series. Fans of the television show Glee and movies like Pitch Perfect would love this entire series.

Again Joelle Charbonneau has hit all the right notes. Her characters just sing on these pages. As these stories continue the characters continue to grow and evolve, both the adults and the teenagers.

Paige is still trying to make it as an opera singer but she really enjoys working with these kids. As if a long bus ride and a week long stay in a hotel with a bunch of teenagers weren’t enough one of the local competition volunteers, LuAnn, ends up dead. This volunteer had a real beef with Paige and the Music in Motion group. She was doing everything she could to get them disqualified and no one seems to know why. Then of course Paige is the one to find her body after an apparent hit and run. This moves her the “person of interest” list when the case is ruled as a homicide and this time she is out of her favorite detective’s jurisdiction. But Millie, Aldo and Killer do make the trip so Millie can do the team’s makeup. That Killer is quite the canine. Hopefully they can get Paige out of this mess.

The author takes us behind the scenes of the competition from the rehearsals to the final performance and everything in between. She definitely writes what she knows.

She has choreographed a very clever mystery too. Plenty of real suspects and unexpected turns. One that made this reader quite happy.

Paige's glee club has made it to a national competition. Of course, murder and mayhem follow them to Nashville. Paige examines her relationship with Devlyn, and Aunt Millie does the same with Aldo. Between the performances and sabotages, the show goes on.

A Chorus Line-Up is the third book in the Glee Club series.

This is the first book that I have read in this fun series.

The Prospect High School choir are on their way to Nashville, TN for the National Show Choir championship. A last minute change has Paige Marshall substituting for Donna in a Masters class with Scott Paris. While looking for Scott to discuss the Master's class, someone gets into some of the choirs staging rooms and ruins costumes and instruments. LuAnn, another choir director, had seen Paige backstage when the damage had to have been done and tells the Championship director, Christine, that she wants the Prospect Choir sent packing. Soon LuAnn is run down and killed by a hit and run driver. Paige had been asked by an unknown person the to meet them behind the theater, just where LuAnn is hit. With Paige finding the body and the earlier accusation by LuAnn, naturally becomes a person of interest for a while. Then Paige's investigative skills come in to view and Christine wants her to find who is behind the killing of LuAnn, or the Prospect choir will suffer.

An enjoyable story with real and interesting characters. And little romance too.

Will be watching for the next book.

The assistant in the competition is the killer. Prospect Glen wins and Paige gets an audition with the Lyric Opera in Chicago. Devlyn is out of her life and the policeman is in.

If only a book could come with an accompanying soundtrack that could play as you read! If it did, Joelle Charbonneau's Glee Club mystery series would be the perfect books to feature this.

Her latest book, A Chorus Lineup, continues the story of Paige Marshall and her high school show choir, and the intriguing mysteries that seem to follow poor Paige around!

This is a fun series, with tons of descriptions of rehearsals, costumes, and lots and lots of music. Fans of "Glee" or the movie "Pitch Perfect" will find this book a joy to read, and the entire series one to seek out.

Book three in Charbonneau's Glee Club mysteries. The book is a cut above a lot of the cozy mysteries floating around. Her characters are well developed with human foibles and very human aims and ambitions. Music in Motion is at the national show choir championships in Nashville. Naturally a murder occurs. The ending is particularly exciting. I was turning the pages as fast as I could.

Having experienced high school show choirs as a parent, I enjoyed the insider's view this story offered.
I have not read the earlier books in the series.
This was a fun read. The solution to the mystery was not obvious.
There were a surprising number of people who were not quite what they seemed.
One piece was not clarified. A possible answer was given, but not substantiated.

The best of the series, the characters finally got a chance to mature a little and were a lot less irritating. Also thank god the love triangle ended, though fairly unrealistically.

The author says she drew on her singing experience for these books. The characters do eat a lot of dairy before their performances, which confused me.

Overall, a cute read.

Good little story that was ended on a good note if another book isnt written in this series. Theonly line that wasnt wrapped up was the boxes on the loading dock - a solution was imagined but it didnt really add anything to the storyline.

With this book, I have come to fully understand the term “cozy mystery.” Sure, it’s a mystery with a murder at its heart, but spending time with these characters I love just feels cozy.

And no disrespect to the book, but I didn’t even care all that much about the mystery this time. Because Paige was at the final singing competition with her kids, and auditioning for her big break, and I just cared SO MUCH about those things. I had come to love these characters over three books, almost imperceptibly. And all the emotions of a final performance shortly before graduation just came flooding back to me. Sure, it had a touch of schmaltz to it. But damn if I wasn’t tingling all over at the end, just full of warm and fuzzy feelings, and needing someone to hug.

As to the mystery, it was good. Non-obvious, with quite a few moving parts to keep track of. Made sense in the end.

Charbonneau also found a moment to work out all the romantic angles of the story, which admittedly I didn’t care about, but good that we got some closure.

While this book was really perfect in the way it ended the trilogy, I’m sad I won’t get to spend more time with Paige and Millie. The characters are real to me, and are just a joy to spend time with. Charbonneau has proven now that she excels at finales, which makes me all the more eager to pick up more of her books. And these books may indeed be the rare mystery that I choose to read again.
