All things Lauren Graham, I love.
Her television shows, her movies – if I haven’t loved the entirety of whatever it is she’s starred in, I’ve at least enjoyed her performance in it. And now I can add her writing to my list.
Have I Told You This Already?: Stories I Don’t Want to Forget to Remember is Graham’s second collection of essays and my first time reading her. (Or I should say, listening to her. I chose the audiobook since she narrates it.)
Graham writes just as she carries herself – with warmth, a down-to-earth manner, and a dry wit. She discusses aging, Nora Ephron, Hollywood hierarchies, New York City, making marmalade, and her ill-fated adoption of her beloved puppy, Mochi. And while the subjects she writes about may run the gamut, she addresses them all with sincerity and candor.
One essay, though, did miss the mark. In it, her topic of choice is directing, and she lists thirty or so tips for wanna-be directors that I believe a director-friend of hers had either given her or written down somewhere. Or perhaps the tips are her own. In truth, I can’t even say which it is because my ears tuned out from boredom.
But all of Graham’s other essays are sublime. Really. Truly.
And I’m so thankful she pointed me in the direction of Nora Ephron. If Lauren says I'm missing out by not reading Ephron, then I know I’m missing out.
