DNF.
I like dark romance. However, rape & mutilation for the pure sake of demeaning the female characters and putting them in their place, just doesn’t do it for me.

I received a copy of this book from the author and very much appreciate the opportunity to read their work. This one just was not my cup of tea.

"Sorcery & Sin in the Second World" tells the gripping tale of a couple, Rena and Pal, who stumble upon a mysterious portal in their backyard. When Rena ventures through it, she unknowingly steps into a new world. Hours later, Pal follows, only to discover that what felt like a couple of hours for him was actually two and a half years in this strange new dimension.

In this fantastical realm, Rena encounters an array of magical creatures. Overwhelmed by the realization that she's trapped in a world unlike her own, she learns that the portal she crossed through was a one-way passage. "Sorcery & Sin in the Second World" by R. S. d'Arcy is a captivating romantic fantasy brimming with excitement and suspense. The story revolves around Rena, a contentedly married woman, and her husband, Pal. Although Rena is appreciative of the income she earns from her job, she had always dreamed of becoming a game designer. She is not happy following the path Pal secured for her.

When Pal was asked to lead a major project by his boss Raphael, the demands on his time increased, leaving less room for his relationship with Rena. One day, Pal notices that Rena has mysteriously disappeared. His search leads him to their backyard, where he stumbles upon a portal to an alternate world. To his shock, he learns that time moves differently there—one hour in their world equals a year in this new realm. Rena had unknowingly entered this world two years and six months ago.

Desperate to return home, Rena must embark on a treacherous journey across forests and distant lands to reach the legendary Mountain of Dors. The tale takes readers on an adventurous quest to discover what challenges await in this unfamiliar world.

The cover art is eye-catching, and the title perfectly fits the enchanting storyline. Rena and Pal's characters are skillfully developed, and the plot is filled with twists that kept me engrossed from start to finish. The immersive narrative pulled me away from reality, and I could easily imagine this story adapted into a thrilling movie. If you're seeking an escape from the routine, this book offers a delightful and mesmerizing read.

This book transports the main characters to a fantasy world through a portal that was there in their backyard. Rena is a woman protagonist. She found a portal in her backyard and entered it. When her husband didn't find her, he entered through the same portal and was informed that his wife came through this portal two years and six months ago.

Pal found this confusing as he saw his wife two and a half hours ago. He realized that the second world is different from their own world. During her journey to the Mountain of Dors, Rena expressed her need for some food and drink. Meanwhile, Pal checked the recorders to know which path Rena went.

Rena and Pal's love will be tested in this new world. Will they find their ways back to each other? The author has crafted an engaging world. This is a page turner story that hooked me till the last page. I loved the way the story ended on a cliffhanger and left me craving for more. It's the first book by the author that I have read and I loved his writing.

I strongly recommend this book to fans of fantasy fiction.

This one was a lot to take in but I think I genuinely enjoyed myself with it. Rena and Pal are well written as characters and its easy to see their struggles and concerns for the most part. There are a couple of leaps in logic that I question but there's enough interesting world building and interesting character twists to keep readers entertained throughout the entirety of the novel.

There are a few things that bothered me. One, I just didn't fully buy Rena being upset with Pal for not rescuing her immediately after she gets sucked into the other world. We learn that time moves much differently in this magical world and Rena being gone just a few hours in the real world turns into years when Pal finally catches up with her. But even without that explanation it still shouldn't be so surprising that your husband would take such a long time to find you in an alternate reality. That and some of the pointless raunchy sex scenes that felt forced but other than that this book is a blast to read. Pal is a humble and kind man and Rena can be a badass on occasion. The Villains were very entertaining as well. Especially Shandi, I loved her conniving nature and schemes. So overall I would highly recommend this one and will be on the look out for the sequel.

This fantasy novel follows Rena and Pal who are husband and wife. The story takes us through their typical everyday life before we transfer to the fantasy world. Rena, who enters the second world first through a portal in their backyard must figure her way through a magical world where she is forced to adapt. Rena goes through two years of battles, love, and self-discovery. Pal, Rena’s husband, enters the second world looking for Rena. Pal unknowingly is from the second world, a world that is filled with swords, sorcery, and enchanting characters. Pal meets dwarfs along the way and watches the recordings from Rena’s experiences of sexual slavery and her journey in the second world. This is how he finds out that hours in their world equals years in the second world. Pal now realizes that this will put a test on their relationship with their trust and loyalty. Rena becomes associated with the wrong sorcerers and puts everyone in danger.

Telling the story between Rena and Pal was done phenomenally. R.S. d’Arcy’s writing style made it easy to follow and visualize the entire setting without feeling like it was too difficult to grasp everything that was going on. I finished this in one sitting, my attention was grabbed from the very beginning and kept throughout. Please read Sorcery & Sin in the Second World if you would love to dive into a world of fantasy with loads of adventure, action, romance and tons of different emotions. This was an enjoyable reading experience that was left on a cliffhanger so I cannot wait for the next book!

R. S. d'Arcy’s Sorcery & Sin in the Second World is an epic tale that kept me glued from the very first page. The moment Rena stepped into the portal, her transformation from a woman trapped in routine to a fierce survivor was inspiring. Her character is complex, strong, and deeply human—someone you can’t help but root for.

What took the book to another level was Pal’s perspective. His search for Rena wasn’t just about finding her; it became a journey of self-discovery, pushing him to confront his own fears and limits.

The theme of how love endures even through unimaginable distances and challenges gave the book its emotional core. The interplay between sorcery, danger, and the rawness of human emotions made this an unforgettable adventure.

“Sorcery & Sin in the Second World” by R. S. d’Arcy is a spellbinding tale of love, betrayal, and power that transports readers to a fantastical medieval world beyond a mysterious backyard portal. The story begins with Rena, a woman stuck in the monotony of her daily life, who stumbles upon a portal leading her to an extraordinary second world. When her husband, Pal, follows in search of her, he discovers a realm where time operates differently and where magic and danger intertwine.

As Pal embarks on a quest to find Rena, he encounters magical gnomes who reveal Rena’s harrowing journey through their records. Through these visions, Pal witnesses Rena’s resilience in the face of slavery, her prowess as a warrior, and her complex relationships formed over two and a half years. The narrative expertly weaves Pal’s exploration of Rena’s experiences, creating a rich, multi-layered story that explores themes of love, sacrifice, and identity. R. S. d’Arcy masterfully builds a world filled with enchanting characters and vivid landscapes. The inclusion of magical gnomes as historians adds a unique touch, grounding the fantastical elements in a sense of continuity and tradition. The story takes a dark turn as Rena becomes entangled in the schemes of the Sorcerer Queen Shandi and her brother, Sego, revealing the depths of their ambition and the dangers of unchecked power.

The heart of the story lies in the reunion of Pal and Rena, whose love is tested by the trials they face. Their determination to stay together, despite the forces arrayed against them, speaks to the power of love and loyalty. The twist of Pal’s true heritage and potential as a powerful sorcerer adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, setting the stage for a climactic confrontation with Shandi and Dredden.

“Sorcery & Sin in the Second World” is a captivating read that blends action, romance, and fantasy seamlessly. D’Arcy’s ability to create a compelling, immersive world while exploring the emotional depth of the characters makes this novel a standout in the fantasy genre. The cliffhanger ending leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment, as Pal and Rena’s journey promises even more adventure and heartache. This novel is a must-read for fans of epic fantasy, offering a fresh take on the genre with its intricate plot and dynamic characters.

✨️ I was provided with a copy of this book by the author, but this does not affect my review in any way ✨️

I am thoroughly impressed. Wow. This book is such a wild and fun ride, and if I hadn't been so busy with actual life (🥱), I could've easily finished this within a day.

We follow our MCs, Pal and Rena, as they embark on an adventure filled with fantasy, discovery, joy, dread, grief, love, and just about everything else you could imagine.

The twists and turns kept on coming, and I really enjoyed the dynamic between Pal & Rena, their characters just fit sooo well together 🫶🏻

Here was my only issue, and it's quite a small one: I'm not someone who reads for spice only. If it's included, then sure, but it has never been a priority when choosing my next read. This being said, should a book contain some heated scenes, I prefer for them to be done thoroughly. These scenes in this book could've been slightly more well written or just a bit longer in my opinion, because it ends up feeling extremely rushed and takes a way the believability of how amazing some of these characters supposedly are between the sheets when it seems that they only last for about a minute 👀🌶

Other than that, I really enjoyed this one and I'm actually very keen to read the sequel. I need to know what happens next 😩🪄✨️🗡

When I picked this book up, I didn’t have much expectation to begin with. The synopsis was fascinating but felt borrowed from various adventure & fantasy stories. Much like many portal fictions out there, this book gave me “Narnia” & “Alice in Wonderland” for adults vibes at first. But once I passed the hurdle of story setting, I realised this book has so much more to offer.

Sorcery & Sin in the Second World by R. S. d’Arcy is a sword and sorcery fantasy novel that combines elements of adventure and romance. The book follows the journey of Rena, who finds a gateway to the second world and how she navigates a magical realm filled with battles, love, and self-discovery. Rena’s character development is a central focus as she learns to adapt to the new world she finds herself in and discovers her strengths and abilities.

But there’s another protagonist in this story as well. Pal, Rena’s husband in the normal world, enters the second world looking for his wife. While Rena’s journey of self-discovery goes on a different track, Pal has a pretty enigmatic backstory too, unknown to himself. d’Arcy’s valiant effort of telling two stories at once pays off as he ties the knots of both the husband’s and wife’s character arc beautifully.

The book’s descriptive writing style accentuates the visualisation of the story, making the reader feel fully engrossed and invested, both in the plot and the lead characters. The setting, action sequences and character motivation are all on par in advancing the story at a nice pace. The integration of multiple perspectives (although the story is narrated in the third person) and subplots also add depth to the story providing a broader understanding of the inhabitants.

The narrative’s exploration of the indomitable human spirit, trust and loyalty adds depth and significance, making the story meaningful as well as entertaining. A finely tuned pacing captivates the audience, skillfully blending action, character evolution, and plot twists to perfection. Adding humour and wit, prominently in the characters’ banterful conversations, makes this sword and sorcery novel stand out in the crowd.

But the world-building of the second world felt a little off at moments. A simple muggle like me belonging to the otherworld (as the inhabitants of the second world call our realm) wanted to know more about this fantasy land of sorcery. A story that’s focused on people entering this second world from another, we the readers, make the journey with them knowing as much as the protagonists. It isn’t like we are totally clueless about what’s going on. But a bit more detailed building of this mystifying world would have done wonders. The author kinda leaves the reader high and dry in that area.

The book also has its fair share of eroticism blended in, and it does get quite steamy at times! But it, in no way, overpowers the main narrative, making it irrelevant or forgotten. In fact, the sensuality helps the reader understand the characters’ intentions and leeways into their development. I have read many fantasy books using erotic themes to fill in when the storyline falls flat or there’s nothing much interesting in the world they’re building but d’Arcy’s erotic scenes complement the story, and the characters.

All in all, “Sorcery & Sin in the Second World” provides an engaging and enjoyable reading experience. This book will appeal to fans of character-driven fantasy novels with a touch of romance. Oh, Did I mention? The book ends on a BIG cliffhanger, and you’ll surely wait for the next instalment of the series to drop soon.

After reading this book from cover to cover, I can wholeheartedly say this book took me on a journey I wasn’t expecting. The story is packed with layers of magic, adventure, and emotional challenges that kept me completely invested from beginning to end.

The story introduces us to Rena and her husband, Pal, who find themselves accidentally thrown into a mysterious and perilous world filled with dark sorcery, mythical creatures, and intense battles. Rena’s transformation as she navigates this unfamiliar realm is a journey on its own. She starts off as someone who’s completely unprepared for the threats around her, but as the plot unfolds, you witness her grow into a resilient, resourceful, and even brave figure. Pal’s character arc, too, is beautifully crafted—he’s someone who feels the weight of time slipping away as he battles to save Rena and to make sense of their relationship under these extraordinary circumstances. His internal conflict and dedication make him relatable and easy to root for.

One of the things that struck me most was the book’s world-building. the author has a gift for creating a setting that feels so real and immersive. Every corner of this world is described with enough detail that I could practically see it in my mind—its dangers, its hidden beauty, and the mystery that lurks behind every turn. The added element of time shifts between the worlds brought a unique and clever twist, adding urgency and complexity to the story.

Though the story involves romance, it’s handled in a way that doesn’t overshadow the main adventure but enhances it. The relationship between Rena and Pal is filled with both tender and tense moments, making their journey feel genuine and relatable. The steamy scenes are tasteful and fit the story’s tone, blending into the plot naturally and adding a layer of intimacy that feels authentic.

The pacing was spot on, with each chapter revealing new twists or challenges. By the time I reached the climax, I was so engrossed I couldn’t put the book down. It’s clear that d’Arcy has thought through every character arc, every subplot, and every piece of dialogue to make this a complete, satisfying experience.

Overall, it isn’t just a portal fantasy—it’s a heartfelt tale that digs deep into themes of loyalty, courage, and the test of love under the most unusual circumstances. I’d recommend it to anyone who loves fantasy with substance, where both the magical world and the characters feel fully alive and impactful. This one left a lasting impression, and I’d gladly pick up the sequel to see where Rena and Pal’s journey takes them next.

Sorcery & Sin in the Second World, by R. S. d'Arcy, offers readers a portal fantasy journey centered around Rena and Pal, a New York-based married couple. The narrative begins with Rena stumbling upon a mystical portal after a challenging day at work, which whisks her away to a realm brimming with magic, dwarves, and complex societal structures involving sex and slavery. Pal ventures after her in a twist of fate, only to uncover a time dilation where hours in their world translate to years in this newfound land. This leads to a separation that tests their deep love and commitment.

The story begins with a thoughtful exploration of the couple's everyday life, setting a solid foundation for the characters before introducing fantastical elements. While deliberate in its pacing, this approach provides a comprehensive understanding of the characters, including the secondary ones, whose presence adds depth to the narrative, even if their relevance to the main storyline is somewhat limited. The opening chapter intriguingly inverts typical portal fantasy conventions by introducing a character from the other world into ours. This creative choice piques curiosity about the mechanics and reasons behind inter-world travel. However, the narrative momentum remains gradual upon entering the magical world, which may impact reader engagement. The narrative of Sorcery & Sin in the Second World skillfully utilizes perspective shifts between Rena and Pal, creating a multi-dimensional dynamic that keeps the reader engaged. This technique adds depth to the story as it evolves, with Pal initially appearing as the primary focus, only to gradually reveal Rena's growing significance in the plot. This unfolding of character roles is handled with subtlety, allowing Rena to emerge as a key driver of the story's action intriguingly and unexpectedly. The worldbuilding, particularly the magic system, highlights d'Arcy's work. The author crafts a world where magic users wield significant power, a facet that invites further exploration and understanding. Amidst this rich setting, the character development presents as subtly nuanced, offering the potential for further exploration and deeper character arcs in future works, which adds to the anticipation and intrigue for readers.

Sorcery & Sin in the Second World presents a unique take on the portal fantasy genre, with intriguing worldbuilding and a distinctive approach to character perspectives. Readers will find the engaging setting and premise filled with promise for future volumes in this series.

Book Review: Sorcery & Sin in the Second World by R.S. d’Arcy ✨

Rating:5/5

Review:

📚 Sorcery & Sin in the Second World by R.S. d’Arcy is a beautifully crafted, immersive fantasy that pulls you into a world of magic, love, and adventure. The story begins in the most unexpected way—a portal discovered in the backyard by Rena, a woman longing for something beyond her everyday life. When she steps through, she finds herself in the Second World, a place filled with dwarves, giants, powerful warriors, and armies of the undead. It’s a world unlike anything she has ever known, and she’s thrown into a journey that tests her spirit, courage, and sense of self. 💫

👉Two and a half hours later, her husband Pal goes searching for her, only to follow her into this parallel realm. But in a thrilling twist, he discovers that time flows differently—every hour in our world equals a year in the Second World. When he steps through, Rena has already been there for over two years! His quest to reunite with her leads him through lands brimming with ancient magic and hidden dangers, where he learns just how much they’ve both changed in the time apart.

👉One of the things I loved most about this book is the depth with which R.S. d’Arcy explores their relationship. Rena and Pal’s love is tested not only by the strange world around them but also by the distance that has grown between them, both in time and experience. 💖 The emotional intensity builds as they face obstacles and secrets that force them to see each other—and themselves—in new ways. Their story is filled with courage, sacrifice, and rediscovery, making it so much more than a fantasy epic.

👉The world-building is absolutely breathtaking! Every detail, from the enchanted forests to the mystical Mountain of Dors, feels vividly real and atmospheric. d’Arcy’s writing makes you feel like you’re right there beside Rena and Pal, facing each danger and marveling at the wonders of this Second World. It’s easy to get lost in the beautifully described landscapes, magical beings, and unique cultures of this realm. ✨

👉This book is filled with suspense, romance, and plot twists that kept me eagerly turning the pages.

Hopeful Erotic Fantasy Romance

A woman drops her baby off with a priest, and 40 years later, Paulo Finan or "Pal" can read people's strengths and weaknesses. Pal and his coworkers detest the supervisor, Troy. Pal's wife, Rena Finan, also works at the same site. Pal meets his new neighbor, Kana Rigoletti. Pal talks to his wife. Pal and Rena are newlyweds and don't have enough money to have a baby. Raphael, one of the bosses at work who is unimpressed with Troy, doesn't want to promote Troy to the CEO. Instead, he wants to give Pal a $20k raise and hire him. Rena and Pal got into a fight, and then Rena went to the bar with Kelly. Kelly tries to get some girl playtime with Rena, and Rena refuses because she is a married woman. When Rena goes home, Pal lets her know he got a raise and she could quit her job. Rena tells Pal how Kelly tried to get it on with her, and Pal was fine with having a 3rd, and remarked that Kelly was hot.

Pal and Rena are teleported to another fantasy dimension separately. Rena meets Queen Shandi, and Pal meets a gnome. Pal starts a search to find Rena. Amara preps Rena to meet Malastar, who expects Rena to strip. Malastar took Rena to his chamber and had his way with her. Rena was assigned to the brothel, where she had visitors like Jungor. Jungor buys Rena's freedom. Instead, Rena is sold to an unclean man. Prince Sego, Queen Shandi's younger brother, pays for Rena's freedom. Jungor kidnapped Rena, taking her back to his village to become his lover. Rena keeps waiting for Pal to rescue her, but Pal is with Amara. Will Pal and Rena ever get to be together as husband and wife and fulfill their dreams of having a baby?

The choice of this book is special from the start, as it marks my first dark romance set in a fantasy world this year. The story begins with the lives of Paulo Finan and Rena, a couple leading a simple, ordinary existence. While this life satisfies Paulo, Rena feels trapped and struggles with their mundane routine.

Everything changes for Rena when she discovers a mysterious portal in her backyard. This portal leads her to an enchanting world filled with giants, warriors, and magical wonders—a realm where survival requires courage and resilience. Leaving her dull life behind, Rena embarks on a thrilling journey where she must fight to live each day.

Meanwhile, Paulo is deeply troubled by his wife’s sudden disappearance. Determined to find her, he stumbles upon the same portal and enters the fantastical second world. However, this new realm is not as forgiving to him as it is to Rena. While Rena has adapted to this perilous new life, can Paulo do the same? What will become of their relationship as they navigate these two vastly different worlds? To find out, dive into this enchanting tale of love, magic, and survival.

I stumbled across this book by accident, but I thoroughly enjoyed the blend of magic, romance, and adventure. The author masterfully maintains the excitement from start to finish. While there are a few rough spots in the narrative, I’m eagerly anticipating the next installment in this series. This is a must-read for fans of fantasy and romance alike.

Sorcery & Sin in the Second World is an adventure fiction novel written by the author R.S. d’Arcy, published in August 2023. The narrative centers on the main characters, Rena and Pal, a blissfully married pair. Rena stumbles upon a gateway in her garden, leading her to a realm beyond her wildest dreams, filled with warriors, dwarves, giants, legions of the undead, and enchantments. Two and a half hours later, Pal, her husband, begins to search for her and inadvertently passes through the same portal. He soon finds out that one hour in our reality equals one year in this extraordinary world, realizing that Rena has been there for two and a half years. During his journey to find Rena, he uncovers a deeper understanding of both her and himself in this realm of magic, passion, affection, and adventure. The relationship between Rena and Pal is both charged and poignant, presenting a delightful blend of romance and personal development against a backdrop of enchantment and peril. With witty exchanges and passionate scenes, the book keeps readers engaged from beginning to end, making it an enthralling and pleasurable read. Sorcery & Sin in the Second World is an expertly crafted fantasy that seamlessly intertwines romance, adventure, and magic. The prose is captivating and brisk, pulling readers into a richly envisioned world filled with surprises and well-rounded characters. Spanning over 280 pages, it is an excellent choice for fans of the genre. Highly recommended from my side.

“Sorcery & Sin in the Second World” is a gripping story that blends intense action, complex world-building, and intensely poignant character development. I was drawn into the enigmatic Second World, where magic, peril, and metamorphosis all come together, from the first page. The narrative centres on Rena, who slips into a portal and is thrown into a dangerous new realm full of evil magic, legendary animals, and never-ending obstacles. As he follows her into this dimension and struggles with the startling realisation that time moves differently there, her husband Pal gives the story an additional level of complexity. Some of the most compelling parts of the narrative are his desperate attempts to save Rena and the resulting emotional tensions between them.

With luscious descriptions that transport you to every aspect of the Second World, the world-building is superb. A fascinating dimension is added by the time difference between the universes, which raises the stakes by fostering a sense of urgency. There are enough twists and turns to keep you interested right up to the very end, and the pacing is perfect. Although there is romance, it strengthens the story's emotional centre rather than overpowering the fantasy or adventure parts. This book is about love, loyalty, and the sacrifices we make for the ones we care about, not only magic. For fantasy readers who have a deep yearning for adventure, it is an essential read.
