Capitalism and Class in the Gulf Arab States
This book analyzes the recent development of Gulf capitalism through to the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis. Situating the Gulf within the evolution of capitalism at a global scale, it presents a novel theoretical interpretation of this important region of the Middle East political economy.

A well-researched book, the content is invaluable. However, it's a heavy read for those who don't know much about the Gulf and its economic structure. I concentrated mostly on Chapter 5 which spoke about Khaleeji capital, specifically in equity markets and I found a lot of what Hanieh wrote about can be used for future research, or at least give you a sense of direction.
The topic is really messy and at times shady so I applaud the author for bringing it all together and shedding even a brighter light on the subject.

I knew this was going to be fantastic on page 50.
Obviously, from the title, Hanieh uses Marxist concepts in his analysis while clarifying its limits. He shows how the GCC basically played a big role in neoliberalism and the GCCs societies.
The book is well researched, and I can co firm that as a GCC citizen.

This book was an excellent and masterful overview of the political economy of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the deep ties between the GCC and the global economy (beyond their well-known role as important oil producers). The book can be rather dry at times, with pages of numbers and figures that are listed out without a whole lot of context (but probably extremely useful to somebody doing serious research on the topic; but much of the book is more accessible and readable, as it relies on tracing the evolution of GCC political economy via a historical narrative. Overall, this is an essential book for not just understanding the nature of the Gulf Arab states, but the global economy itself.

A comprehensive analysis about the current capitalist world system and its roots in the Arab world.
