Charlotte Halverson's dream had once been to fall in love, get married and have a family.
But trusting the wrong person has left her a single mother. Now, Charlotte is content to raise her daughter and pursue her career as an elementary school teacher.
Unfortunately, the past comes knocking, bringing with it more baggage than Charli wants to unpack.
Blake Madden could have been a wealthy man had he just followed the path set out for him.
It's been twelve years since Blake last spoke to his family, so when he has to leave the military to care for his young daughter full-time after the death of her mother, rather than going home, he goes to where he last felt a real sense of joy and Serenity Point.
Though Blake regrets the decisions he made the last time he was in Serenity, he can't help but hope that he hasn't completely burned all his bridges there. Being a full-time single dad is new to him, and he needs help and support. He is certain his cousin, Jackson, and his parents would be there for him. But dare he hope that Charli might be too?
Blake's return brings with it a bunch of messy feelings and revelations that Charli had hoped to never have to deal with. Finding out Blake's daughter is in her class at school, Charli knows she can't ignore his return, no matter how much she'd like to. And when he asks for a second chance, she isn't sure that's even a possibility.
However, their daughters connect as friends, and soon Blake and his daughter are very present in Charli's life. Being close to him again, dredges up old feelings and emotions, leaving Charli confused about how to move forward with him.
Can Charli find it in her heart to forgive Blake for making promises and then leaving her? Or will the risk of being abandoned again keep her from opening her heart to the man she once loved?

I have really enjoyed the entire series but this one was my least favorite. It was hard for me to get into it in general. I had a hard time relating to Charli for some reason. The second half of the book I enjoyed so much more. Less of the wallowing in the past lol
With out giving spoilers I would’ve given this book more stars but I could not get over Charlotte. She was hard to like, selfish and just plain foolish. I was perplexed that her parents and siblings gave Blake the side eye for him breaking up with her over 12 years ago. But no one was upset at her for keeping a secret for 12 years!! It was as if everyone blamed Blake for her actions. Yes he broke up with her and didn’t respond when she reached out to him. But she could have tried harder to talk to him. Also when he returned she had ample time to tell him the truth. She stated she didn’t want to lie to him when he point blank ask her a question but yet she did exactly that! She deflected and never answered his questions.
She blames him for her straying from her Christian values and takes no accountability for her part in anything. It was always Blake’s fault because he broke up with her. As if she was a simpleton who has no control over her own actions. I felt as if she didn’t do enough to redeem herself. I was impress with how quickly Blake forgive her but thought she needed to do more before they had their HEA.
This is a story about love and forgiveness and second chances. Charlotte fell in love and based on promises of the future with Blake compromised her values. When Blake visited his family to say no to the family business he walked away from everyone including Charolette. Soon after she finds out she is pregnant. Her family rally’s around her and Layla is born. Fast forward 12 years and Blake is back with a daughterAmelia. After 12 yrs in the Army after the death of the mother of his child dies Blake returns to Serenity to raise his daughter and get support from his Aunt and uncle. Will they find their way back to each other? Or will the events from the past keep them apart?
Makes you think and touches the heart. 'The pastor, having heard their story during a meeting with them earlier that week, reminded them again of the verse in Ecclesiastes 3 that said He has made everything beautiful in its time. It had certainly taken time, but Charli believed that what they had was beautiful, and it was only going to get more so with time. When they spoke their vows, Layla and Amelia stood with them, listening as Charli and Blake pledged their love and made promises of forever to each other, before God and family. Happiness radiated off the girls, and it was matched only by the happiness Charli felt and could see in Blake’s eyes.'

I've been enjoying getting to know the Halverson family. It helps to read the books in order so that you're familiar with the characters from previous books. From the beginning of the series, there was always the question about Charlotte (Charli) and her daughter - who was the dad? So we finally get the story. It's pretty emotional. Jordan handles the pacing well. It's not fast-paced, so the reader has time to think through the issues Charli is dealing with and be ready for the next plot twist. I look forward to the next book!
I love this story and how it continues the Halverson family saga. It was a wonderful story of forgiveness on many levels. My only complaint was the number of typos throughout the book, there were even points within the story that words were entirely missing or only a few letters of the words were there leaving the reader to decide what was meant to be said. This is something I have never experienced before in one of Kimberly’s books and it was a tad disappointing.
KRJ absolute favorite author! Love all her series. Charlotte’s journey so many of us can relate to choices made whether good or bad. All about communication, grace, forgiveness and love. Fear can so do a number on us and causes one to retreat and not do what is best. Thank God He is All forgiving and welcomes us with open arms.
I’m glad they got to their “promises kept.”
And to see “Junie” in the book as a teacher made my day - even though it probably didn’t have anything to do with me 🤣🙃
A clean romance and it didn't disappoint me. This book is what you expect from the author and both Blake and Charlie were perfect in this story. I would have liked Blake's parents involvement or character arc growth while Blake visited them after 12 years or at least Blake's relationship with his sisters should have been touched upon since Charlie always has a big family of brothers and sisters to turn to.
Trying to change God's plans isn't to be taken lightly. Yes Charlotte & Blake had taken plans in their own way which sadly was a mess. Yet in the mess precious Amelia was born and Blake stepped up to the plate as her dad. Now will he step up again for another daughter? Restoration and redemption come to those who seek it.
Wow this is a tear jerker all the way through. The author does a fantastic job of bringing out a real life story and adding Christian beliefs in to show us we all fall short but with God anything is possible. I really enjoyed this book and I think everyone else will too.
Enjoyed Charli’s story. In the earlier books you just wondered what her secrets were. Now we get to hear all about them and meet her mystery man. I liked Blake’s serious desire to be better than his past, starting with the responsibility of fatherhood, and seeking to be forgiven by Charli. Good story, good outcome.
In the beginning I was not certain if this 5th book in the Halversons series would be as good as the previous books. In some ways I have enjoyed (though tears at times) more than the others. A great read!
Oh what a mystery for all of them to put the pieces together. God is always in control no matter when we think we are going to control our own lives. Wrong once again. He is always there. Stopping and listening is the hard part. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Sometimes the road to happily-ever-after is full of twists and turns. For Charli and Blake, the road is also a path of heartache and sorrow. But glimmers of joy as bright as Layla’s and Amelia’s smiles bring hope and healing as love and lives are mended.
A beautiful story. The characters are supportive, loyal, a strong Christian faith and family values. I am just enjoying this series with strong Christian family and how they navigate life's ups and downs. I'm hooked and can't wait to read the next book. Enjoy.
Lots of emotion in this story. I knew we would one day read Charli’s story and learn the details behind Layla’s birth…. And especially why Charli has kept the identity of Layla’s father a complete secret all these years. That happens in this book and it’s a bit of a surprise and well done.
And other surprises along the way, including a big twist at the end.
Charlotte, the newest installment in The Halverson series, brings us the story of Charli and Blake, which features their heartwarming second chance romance. Even with the mistakes of the past, I found both characters to be enjoyable. I was rooting for their relationship for the entirety of the book and I just loved being back in the Halverson family universe.
While this book is part of a series featuring a family, you can read the book as a standalone if you like. Personally, Jordan is one of my favorite authors, so I'm thinking you'll want to read the whole series.
