Cataal is the disgraced former head of the warrior clan on Argala. Now a lowly scout, he's resigng to having lost everything, until he's nearly killed on a routine patrol.

The attack shows that something larger is at play than a simple raid. Caylun has been stabbed with a poisoned dagger, but is suddenly saved by the Terran female Maeve, a doctor, and friend of the overlord Caylun's wife Ashleen.

Maeve is professional on the one hand, tender and caring on the other. Cataal was married before, until the terrible Argalan plague took his wife. He has always been a warrior first, a man second. It's the THIRD part of him he has to hide from everyone, or at least try to.

Maeve knows all about Cataal's actions that have led to his exile, and his shocking secret. Maeve has one of her own--she's come through the portal because of the new human-Argalan matchmaking program Caylun and Ashleen have started. Maeve has turned out to be a perfect genetic match for some of the overlords desperately looking for wives in order to save the Argalan civilization, Cataal included.

Will she choose the wounded warrior with no status, or one of the wealthy leaders of the other clans? More to the point, will Cataal choose Maeve? Or refuse to have anything to do with the new humans he has seen in the past as a corrupting influence that might destroy Argala once and for all...?
