Proven throughout history for physical, mental and spiritual rejuvenation, fasting promotes cleansing and healing; helps normalize weight, blood pressure, cholesterol; rebuilds the immune system; and helps reverse the aging process.
My father and I wrote this book and it has helped many learn more about fasting and living a healthy Lifestyle.
From the book: Our bodies have a natural self-cleansing for maintaining a clean, healthy body and our "river of life" – our blood. It’s essential we keep our entire bodily machinery from head to toes healthy and in good working order so nothing breaks down! Fasting is the best detoxifying method. It's also the most effective and safest way to increase elimination of waste buildups and enhance the body's miraculous self-healing and self-repairing process that keeps you healthy and youthful.
An overly long, poorly organized, rambling book with an important and potentially life changing message: the habit of periodic fasting combined with eating a healthy diet is indispensable to living a vibrant, joyful and disease-free life.
The author recommends 24-36hr distilled water fasts every week and longer fasts such as 7-10 days every three months or so. The author also recommends eating a diet comprised primarily of organic fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds to help keep the body clean and properly fueled.
I personally love the idea of 24-36hr water fasts each week.(Ive practiced this off and on for 5 years) Its a great way to regularly give the body a much deserved rest and detox.
As I mentioned earlier, because of its structure, this book can be hard to get through at times but its core message and practical application tips make it a great resource. I highly recommend giving it a read and most of all applying its wisdom.

This is quite the most incredible book I have ever read. I deliberately did not google Bragg or his 'daughter' until I'd read it cover to cover and yes, this is the only book I have ever read where the inside front and back covers are as full of content as the other pages. 'The Miracle of Fasting' reads like the transcript of a TV advertorial. It shouts. It sells. Barely a page goes by when we are not regaled with the wonders of Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar, or Bragg Amino Acids. Bragg himself is a marvel. He is a man with no self doubt and he delivers his message with evangelical zeal. He has almost supernatural powers - he can survive days without food, travels the world, he sunbathes naked, he hangs out with celebrities. His regime turned his wimpy sister into the hottest chick in the state and he believes that with the right diet, a man can live 900 years. A memorable passage (if you'll excuse the pun) is when Bragg is on a ten day fast at the family homestead in Virginia and he suddenly and unexpectedly passes a turd made entirely of mercury - into a cup - which he then measures.
Bragg comfortably hedges his bets on why he fasts. He alludes to his Christian faith - many people in the Bible advocate fasting - yet regularly mentions 'God and Mother Nature' as some kind of power duo. Surely, for Christians, God is Mother Nature? Rarely does Bragg share any spiritual truths that have been revealed to him while fasting and the end result is that the book feels like an optimistic 'catch all' - after all the Christian market is huge so why not reel them in if you can?
The timeline is also confusing. The book I read was printed in 2012 and is already celebrating the centenary of Bragg Health Stores. Bragg explains that Patricia has written parts of the book but for consistency, she has written as if she is him. However, she appears to continue writing as him long after his death in 1976, suggesting that he is still alive and kicking, conducting physical jerks on a beach in Waikiki.
My internet search dredged up the inevitable truth that Bragg is a liar and a shyster, an opportunist life insurance salesman who reinvented himself as a health guru, adding fourteen years to his age in the process. His energy, as with many villains, was fuelled by an enabler, in this case his son's ex-wife who he may or may not have been in a sexual relationship with, despite calling her his daughter. It seems that Bragg's most significant contribution to the wellness movement was inspiring health guru, Jack La Lanne. For the rest, he appears to have lied as much as he could to make as much money as he could.
Having said all this, I found The Miracle of Fasting almost un-put-downable. Here is a man who has travelled the seven seas, met Gandhi, hung out with Douglas Fairbanks Junior, advised Liz Taylor and Clint Eastwood. This 120 year old has ranches in California, tanned skin and white teeth. He can go thirty days without eating, trek through Death Valley without food, and he shits Mercury. What's not to like? Not only that, his message is credible. I have ordered a water distiller and stopped crossing my legs when I sit. In a small way, Bragg really has changed my life. How dare he! But much of what he writes has been written elsewhere. Kellogg went before him and the Skinny Bitches came after him and the news is always the same: meat, white bread and sugar bad. Pulses, raw veg and juices good.
Still, this book is valuable proof of the salesman's schtick. It's not published by Penguin or HarperCollins. It's published by Bragg, and it plugs another 9 Bragg books within its pages. No editor has come close to it. The typesetting is all over the place. It has random graphics, medical diagrams and lists of vegetables. I love how the content of almost every page is an exact unit and ends with a full stop, even if the editors have to remove the odd preposition. Who needs 'the' and 'an' anyway? You still get the message. Most pages have a quotation, homily or product promotion tagged at the bottom of them.. Some have poems about life. Some, like 'it's the song you sing and the smiles you wear, that is making the sunshine everywhere' are utterly random. But why pay money to a publisher when you can do it all yourself? The Miracle of Fasting is unashamed vanity publishing, despite being top and tailed by ten pages of 'praise' by happy customers. Many of these are big name film, TV and sports stars, proving that Bragg did indeed have a silver tongue. Who cares about his past? His message seems credible, and the odd fantastical story about a three week journey on foot with Mahatma Gandhi, or several months spent in a Swiss TB clinic as a teenager only serve to enhance his myth among people who themselves are perhaps a little divorced from reality.
The crazy thing is, I'm going to miss being told to 'Read Bragg book Super Power Breathing'. I'm going to miss asking myself why Patricia always wears a straw hat with flowers in it and dots the 'i's in her name with tiny love hearts. I'm going to miss Bragg's teeth and tan and the pictures of him standing on his head. I'm even going to miss being sold Apple Cider Vinegar. I'm genuinely glad I read this book. I was given it by a friend and assumed it would be yet another anodyne self help manual but instead it's the maddest thing I've yet read this century. Thank you Bragg!
Very informative. Did a 50-hour fast and it was fantastic.
Although somewhat repetitive, this book has a lot of good insights on the benefits of fasting (physical, mental, spiritual). It could have been edited in half, but again, the information was helpful.
Even though this book is peppered with hokey and downright dangerous health advice, there is a surprising number of health practices that Paul Bragg crusaded about in his time that science has only recently started to confirm as beneficial, namely the health benefits of fasting, water-fasting, to be more specific. Not his 10 to 40 day fasts, of course; but even just the idea that eating is something that should be done in response to need, not a pre-emptive exercise, as health officials have been promoting for decades with the absurd notion that people need to eat breakfast whether hungry or not. Paul Bragg was a mover in the health movement of the 1930's and remained an inspiration into the 1990's "health nuts".
My father in law who is 93 y/o lent to me this book early this month. He said that this might be the reason why he is still alive. My wife says that he, even before, has really been practicing fasting and her mother sometimes complains and gets worried about my father-in-law not eating anything for the whole week. The fasting is not for religious reason (Good Friday or Ash Wednesday) because he is not really as religious as the ladies in the family and at his age he is already exempted anyway.
Fasting for "few" days? I did not believe that he could do it until I read the first page of this book. The author, Paul G. Bragg who was 92-y/o when this book was first published in 1964, actually recommends the following schedule for successful fasting (definitely no food intake):
24-36 hours on a weekly basis 7-10 days on a quarterly basis
I was shocked! When I was trying to reduce weight more than 2 decades ago, I enrolled at Slimmer's World International and I underwent a weight reduction program (which they call Behavior Modification Program). Day 1 was no solid intake except unsweetened pineapple juice, calamansi juice with no sugar and unflavored yogurt (no limit). This cleansing day was really a struggle already but I remember that I was able to do it thrice since then but the last time was maybe 8 years ago. In the recent years, when the annual PE comes, right after blood extraction for fasting blood sugar (FBS) that requires 8 hours of no-food, no-water intake, I normally rush to the nearest fast food outlet to grab something to eat. So fasting for 7-10 days? OMG.
Mr. Bragg, however, presents an interesting and compelling reason for this "scientific" fasting. He said that our body needs time to rest. It needs this resting time to refocus its effort in releasing the toxins that we've been putting into our mouths by taking unhealthy and/or excessive foods. For the 7-10 days, the rationale is that the body will crave for food only up to the 3rd day. On the 4th day, the faster (the person doing the fast), will no longer feel hunger as the stomach has already shrunk.
Jesus did fast for 40 days. Buddha, Gandhi, Aristotle, Gandhi, Socrates and even the father of Medicine, Hippocrates are advocates of fasting. Fasting heightens spiritual awareness that made these men truly exceptional and great.
Today, I tried to fast. I did not eat breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, my family went to SM North to buy stuff. I waited for my wife and daughter to come back from their usual shopping. After spending an hour in NBS Bestsellers and another in Booksale, I left empty-handed (good for the budget). But I got bored and terrible hunger followed. As I was finishing this book, I tried using what Mr. Bragg says as "mind over body" but I just could not hold on any longer. I ordered salad at Las Paellas... There. I failed by missing the last 4 hours. I was only able to complete 20 hrs of fasting. I failed!
But I will try again sometime this week. My next strategy: Stay at home when fasting.
This book is rather old-fashioned in its presentation and a bit creepy. Patricia Bragg wrote it with her father's, Paul Bragg's, voice. Hmmm. Wonder why he didn't write it himself? Could it be that he is DEAD? He may not be. I don't know (and don't really care). No real info on the authors is available on the cover or inside pages of the book.
The instruction is over the top in many places, but they do make some good suggestions about fasting. When they wander off the fasting focus, they get a bit weird. And repetitive. There are some good recipes there and good advice on keep your GI tract healthy. This is definitely a skimmer!
This book is really long, repetitive and re-hashes a lot of things that people who would buy such a book already know. Most of the knowledge by now is pretty common sense as in: additives are bad for you, salt is bad for you etc.
The actually useful part of the book can be summarized in one paragraph:
Take one 24-36 hour fast a week (in which you only drink water(distilled preferably )(even though that part does no resonate with me) and then take 7-10 day fasts 4 times a year. You break a fast slowly with small portions of fresh vegetables and other such things.
All else is pretty much repetitive self-endorsment/common wisdom/ truisms etc.

Like reading the entire label found on Dr. Bronner's Castile soap. Positive, uplifting, crazy, and cut into arbitrary chunks. Fasting is great, most people can go forty days even with below average health. Do it.

B)DEEP BREATHERS LIVE LONGER AND HEALTHIER
"I have done extensive research on long-lived people and I’ve discovered the one common denominator among them all– they are deep breathers! I have found that the deeper, therefore fewer breaths a person take in one minute, the longer they live. Most rapid breathers are the nervous, short-lived people"
When I do deep breathing, I feel a sense of calm and tranquility. I've done my share on research about the importance of deep breathing from ancient Indian Pranayama, Chinese philosophy, and modern-day discovery about deep breathing.
C) SUNSHINE IS A GREAT HEALER TO NERVES
"Sunshine is a health tonic and a Great Healer! As you bask in the warm sunshine, millions of nerve endings absorb the solar energy and transform and store them into more Vital Force energy for your nerves and body."
-Solar energy gives you a vital force for your nerves and body.
D) FASTING PROTOCOLS
"If you have never fasted before, start with 24 or 36 hour fast each week. I urge you to be the judge of the wonder-working miracle powers of the fast. Then you may graduate to the 3 to 4 day fast and, after that, to a 7 to 10 day fast that will make you very proud of your willpower. You can accomplish a great amount of internal cleansing on short fasts."
"Once a week make it a habit to take complete water fast, lasting from 24 to 36 hours. On the days you do eat, consume only natural, organic and unpoisoned foods. Let your mind rule your body. Flesh is dumb! You can feed your stomach anything. Now you are going to use common sense and eat with new health intelligence."
(Quarterly mandatory 10 day fast) -Today he fasts every week for 24 to 36 hours without fail. Four times a year – winter, spring, summer and fall – he takes a 10 day complete fast."
(Fasting heals the body) -When you fast for 24 to 36 hours, or from 3 to 10 days, the healing power starts to work in your body. I have told you, over and over, that the power to cleanse, purify and rejuvenate yourself is within your body. This power has always been in your body. When you go on a complete distilled water
(The inspiration of Dr. Bragg) -From that time on my health and vitality grew by leaps and bounds! That was not my only fast under Dr. Rollier’s supervision. He started me out with a 24 hour weekly fast and in the next 9 months, put me on a 7, 14 and 21 day fast. Between fasts I was fed an alkaline diet."
-I know the great benefits I have received from fasting, and that goes for my whole family. Every week Patricia and I take a 24 to 36 hour fast. We never miss this! In addition we fast from 7 to 10 days, 4 times a year."
"hen we fast for a 24 to 36 hour period, or from 3 to 10 days, all the Vital Force in the body is used for internal purification . . . which includes purification of all the arteries. That is why after a 10 day fast there’s a feeling of lightness in the body. The mind becomes keener, more alert and the memory improves. The craving for physical activity will often become intense."
I started her on 2 weekly 24 hour fasts for the first 2 weeks. The third week I gave her a 3 day fast and in the fifth week I gave her a full 7 day fast. After a month of healthy eating I put her on a 15 day fast. I had her eat for 2 weeks and then put her on a 21 day fast. This eating, then fasting program did the trick! She got back her lovely figure (5’2” and a firm, trim 110 pounds). Her eyes became bright.
D) FASTING REVERSES PREMATURE AGING
Fasting not only slows down the aging clock, but it produces a healthy youthfulness and rebirth in the body. In my years supervising fasts, I have seen thousands of 130 unbelievable miracles happen to people of all ages.
As a write my report, I'm on day 3, I felt glowing, younger, lighter, and revitalized during these past days. Fasting is indeed man's greatest modern discovery.
E) YOU MUST EARN YOUR FOOD BY EXERCISING
-You must earn your food by exercising! We hunt bears, tigers, lions, water buffalos and wild animals thousands of years ago in order to obtain our food. In other words, we are meant to move and earn our food.
F) NO BREAKFAST POLICY FOR KEENER MINDS
"I have shown elementary school, high school and college students that they can do their greatest studying early in the morning on an empty stomach. Most students eat an evening meal, which is their heaviest meal of the day, and then they try to study."
-Looks like I will be implementing this policy when I go back to school in September(2020).
G) HOW TO BREAK A FAST
"As soon as I finished the fast, I was placed on a highly alkaline diet with an abundance of fresh fruits and raw and lightly steamed or baked vegetables. About 2 weeks after the fast, I experienced a sense of exhilaration and well-being that I had never
H)FASTING HAS BEEN THE BEST REMEDY OF ALL AILMENTS SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME
"Fasting has been practiced by man and animals since the beginning of time. Primitive man had no other method of healing except fasting. He would fast when he got hurt or when ill because fasting was a natural instinct for self-preservation. Along with fasting, he used herbs from the field and forest as tonics and antiseptics."
I)FASTING DE-SALT THE BODY
-Salt robbed offs the calcium in your body. -Salt causes HB pressure. -"Hidden salt" scattered everywhere in our modern foods. -Salt causes bloating in the body. (When you desalt the body, you allow your face to look youthful, slimmer, and radiant.)
J)FASTING GIVES MENTAL & PHYSICAL AWARENESS
"As the body cleanses and heals itself through fasting, keener mental concentration and clearer spiritual perception develop. Remember, the brain is the physical instrument of the mind. As the mucus and toxic wastes are flushed from the brain cells, with it go the worries and frustrations from your mind."
-When you fast, all those negative emotions stack in your body will come out. It is like, rewinding back, which is part of healing. The beginning is messy but the end will be beautiful.
K) THE TONGUE IS AN INSIDE MIRROR OF YOUR BODY
Your tongue – your inside magic mirror – reveals how much toxic material is stored in the cells and vital organs of your body. The tongue (a spongy organ) is mirror of the stomach and the entire mucos membrane system."
L) LIQUID SUNSHINE FROM RIPENED PRODUCE
"We must have the direct rays of the sun on our bodies and our diet must contain 60% or more of food that has been ripened by the sun’s rays. When we eat fresh fruits and vegetables we absorb the blood of the plant – the rich, nourishing chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is the solar energy that the plant has absorbed from the sun, the richest and most nourishing food you can put into your body..."
M) THE IMPORTANCE OF AIR BATH
"Air baths are important to good health. You should sleep with your windows wide open and with a cross ventilation of air moving across your bed."
-I sleep better when the window is open and let the air flow freely throughout the room. My body loves it when it's cool not HOT. Plus, there was a man who reached 110-year old that goes by the name of Bernardo LaPallo who also suggests the importance of air bathing and how it impacts the condition of our skin. Also, I love walking and biking around the park at night to let the fresh breeze of air caressed my face.
N)FASTING KEEPS MONKS YOUTHFUL
The monks told me that they fasted 2 days every week, and once a year they fasted 40 days and nights in the grotto. They felt that this fasting had not only given them great spiritual enlightenment, but had also added vigorous, healthy years to their lives. Their youthful appearance bore out their belief. Although far along in calendar years, these men had great flexibility in their bodies. It required a lot of physical stamina to keep the monastery in good condition in this rugged, barren wilderness and oven-like heat. All were healthy, lean and muscular, with the glow of health to their skin and bright, keen eyes – none of them wore glasses!
- Wow! Better eyesight!glowing youthful skin! spiritual awareness! great flexibility! Fasting is indeed amazing.
O) CROSSING OF THE LEGS IS ONE OF THE WORST POSTURAL HABITS OF MAN
"When you cross your legs you immediately cut down the blood flow to almost a trickle. When the leg and knee muscles are not nourished and don’t have good circulation, the blood goes stagnant in the extremities which can lead to varicose veins or broken capillaries."
This is golden! I vowed to never cross my legs no more.
P)GOOD POSTURE IS IMPORTANT FOR HEALTH
-A good posture must be practiced at all times for the reason of allowing the "life-force"/"Prana"/Chi" to flow all over the body.
Q)A BODY FULL OF TOXINS IS A CONSTANT IRRITANT TO THE NERVES
A body full of toxins is a constant irritant to all the nerves. How is it possible to get a good night’s rest with irritated nerves? In my many years of experience with fasting, I found when people discard their stimulants when fasting, they become deep, restful sleepers. You will notice as you purify your body you will be.
R)SLEEP IS THE GREATEST REVITALIZER
Sleep is the greatest revitalizer, but so few people get a long, peaceful and refreshing night’s sleep. Most people habitually use stimulants: tobacco, drugs, coffee, tea, alcohol, sugar, chocolate and cola drinks. All of these whip the tired nerves, so people who use these stimulants can never have complete rest and relaxation because their nerves are always in an excited “on” condition!
This book comes from one of the pioneer health excerpts, Paul Bragg. Before others started the health trend, (in the 1930s) Paul was already preaching, nutrition, diet, exercise, and fasting. The Apple cider vinegar trend we have today was started by Paul. The book "The Miracle of Fasting" is a good beginner primer on fasting. It is easy to read and has positive themes to encourage a person to begin this process. As you can tell I am kinda biased. But though I have dabbled with reading this book, I never finished it until now. "The Miracle of Fasting" is a good read. I encourage others to seek it out.
This book details how fasting creates inner peace and removes toxic emotions. As the body removes toxins from the bloodstream, caused by unhealthy food and pesticides, etc. the mind and heart can heal. Toxicity in the blood when circulated throughout the body, creates ill emotions and thoughts, as this slug poisons the brain. Toxins create diseases, detoxification promotes health, and prevents illness. Having blood made clean by fasting makes a difference in one's longevity.
When the body takes its energy away from digesting food, (which requires a great deal of internal work/energy), it can focus on other activities, like healing, and building up "nerve force energy." I'm also reading "Building Powerful Nerve Force," Paul Bragg wrote. Nerve force energy is simply internal energy, that can grow like money in the bank, that can be cashed in, (for healing) when illness comes. It's a bit more complicated than that. I encourage you to read up on this from other sources.
He stated that tonsillitis is the result of people eating "mucus-forming foods", cancer is caused by "gooey, slimy foods" and that colds are caused by the consumption of white bread or ice cream. In the health communities...Before dots were connected, that sugar feeds cancer, through the gooey sweets people eat, before mucus was connected with dairy products and with drinking milk, Paul Bragg pointed these themes out.
My mom had 3 children, we were all sick. I remember being held down by medical staff as a boy when getting a shot. We saw doctors all the time, with ear infections, runny noses, and colds. It was traumatic. This was in the 1980s.
Mom took us to an alternative health practicer and he said, "stop giving your kids milk, it feeds mucus." Our ear infections, runny noses, and colds stopped. I have noticed this as an adult, when I am around someone who is sick with the flu or cold or when I am out in the cold I tend to get sick if I have been drinking milk and consuming dairy products as a lifestyle diet.
If someone gets sick and looks at me, it seemed I'd get sick. Every year during the cold season, I'd be out weeks at a time. WHICH WAS frustrating. When I eliminated milk and most dairy products, I've not had a cold or flu since. I know I am straying off the path of the review but I wanted to highlight that this guy is the real deal and knows what he is talking about. :)

I think this is by far the worst book I've ever read. This book begins with page after page ad nauseum of reviews written by the rich and famous—supposedly. The book is filled to the brim with constant promotion of the author's products. The author repeats the same information over and over, chapter after chapter. I am suspicious of the accuracy and origin of many of the quotes throughout the book heaping accolades upon the author. I finally stopped reading after I double-checked a quote from the Bible in which the author twisted the wording to make his point, and totally changed the meaning and emphasis of the passage. It's quite intolerable to misquote anybody, but misquoting the Bible is going too far.
I am so disappointing in this. My expectation was so high for this one. Initially I was reading its translated version in my native language. I liked it so much, and I wanted to read its original version. It was filled with redundant information and highly unorganized. Painful to go through. I thought he was an expert, but it seems like he was just a guy who disagrees with science to create his own facts. He calls them facts that has been proved by lifelong experience. He even mentions "even though some experts might disagree with this, my facts are still good facts". I am not saying that fasting does not do miracles on your body. I hope to find comprehensive guide to fasting.
2.5 stars. Read this book to get perspective on fasting. Some good tips in a very wordy book which is very poorly written. His nutritional advice contains lots of information that is old and inaccurate (and in my mind discarded). However, the principle of fasting and its benefits are interesting. Sadly, he does not get into any of the specific physiological changes, no mention on blood work, ketones, or anything else that might be measurable. His perspective as a practitioner is purely observational and offers no hard data.
As a dietitian/author currently reading sources (all things fasting) for research and evidence-based practice for advancing the understanding of fasting, this book completely lacks any references or hardly addresses any solid base of evidence of fasting. Filled with zealous assertions. Nonetheless, let's not dismiss some of the claims here regarding potential benefits of fasting given the more recent foundation for fasting research. Let's just rely more on evidence-based practice and regard scientific studies more.
Liked the ideas...a lot of true principles. Some extreme notions. Book is written in a way that detracts from the message. It looks low-budget and like it was just pasted together. Not much research to support a lot of the assertions.
So this guy hung out with Gandhi, helped tons of celebrities, and has endorsements from the author of The Peaceful Warrior and Steve Jobs. How have I not heard of this guy until now?
I couldn't stop reading it. It was incredibly inspiring, uplifting, and informative - and I'm sure it will have a significant impact on my life - as fasting will become a more important part of my life.
The main premise is that the body heals itself - and fasting allows this process when it doesn't have to assimilate a constant stream of nutrients. Fasting is often seen as unhealthy, and the pain you feel when doing so is the body cannibalizing itself, and the reason you're tired is you don't have nutrients. But that's simply not the case. The body is healing itself, clearing out toxins and mucus.
A remarkable story he told was after 5 years of doing 1 day of fasting every week and 7-10 day fasts x4 a year, one day he shat out mercury.
The book itself is a chaotic mess. Flowers, quotes that are repeated, lots' of copy-paste from other books of his, exclamation marks in almost every sentence, and the annoying use of "Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar." Since he can't make money on fasting, he better plugs in his ACV.
I find it amusing to imagine Hippocrates back in the day advocating "Hippocrates Apple Cider Vinegar."
Bragg's words have to be taken with a grain of salt (especially on the topic of salt) because he has a tendency to massively exaggerate. He makes it seem like crossing your legs while sitting IS A DEATH SENTENCE!
And he thinks we're really supposed to live 900 years... I'll forgive his craziness for his positivity.
He has an outdated view of cholesterol and saturated and meat. Which is annoying but doesn't take much from his message.
This book is a crazy beautiful mess written with the potential to alter how you view fasting and is undoubtedly extremely inspiring to take care of your health.
To all that have given less than 5 stars to Dr. Bragg and his daughter of his book "The Miracle of FASTING". I not a writer so please excuse my writing. I am 62 years old/young.
I read this book when I was first 14 yrs old. The first time I fasted 7 days. I think I saved my life then without knowing.
My sister was 30 years old was diagnosed with a deadly autoimmune disease called Scleroderma, there is no cure. My sister died at the age of 56 from something else.
Returning to Today, April 2024, I was diagnosed with the same autoimmune disease in February 2024. Despite of the odds of me having Scleroderma. It's -1% for someone that would have Scleroderma in the save family and it's rare that anyone that would have Scleroderma after the age is 60. Well, I am the lucky one.
I was given medication to help with the inflammation that comes with this disease, I got the prescription but didn't take it instead I fasted for 12 days. I returned to the doctor's second visit following a new lab work he had ordered. He was AMAZED, and said to me... The medication is working all your lab results went back to normal, the medication is working, I told him that I changed my diet to Gluten free, lactose free, sugar free and lectin free, and asked him if that help me? He said no, it is the medication that helped you. There is more to this story, but will make it short.
Why fasting works, and is there a scientific study on this issue of fasting? Yes there is. It's all about AUTOPHAGY. There was scientist cell biologist from Japan called Yoshinori Ohsumi, received the Kyoto price and in 2016 a Nobel Price for his discoveries of the mechanism for AUTOPHAGY, which occurs during fasting. AUTOPHAGY helps with cell regeneration which has helped even with the recovery from cancer. Please read more, learn more before given less than 5 stars. Fasting is saving my life. Also look into Dr. Alan Goldhamer.
This is a book of a man and a woman who wanted to live in peace and harmony with nature, and worked hard for that till it happened. I loved the soul of this book. and the energy that comes out of it's words. i did read this book after my attempt of water fasting for many times. and i found many answers for my mysterious beautiful experience. water fasting is really powerful to reach health and clarity. i found the book very helpful and informative. specially when it talks about the relationship between the vital power and cleansing the system, and how to fast gradually from 1 day till 20+ days , and how to break your fasting to get the best benefits. and it was interesting to know about how getting older is not the actual reason of the joints pain and the drain of energy ! i already felt younger when i knew the truth about that !
* Most healthful lifestyle habits are free. * It takes energy to eliminate body wastes. * Build up the "Vital power" . * Energy ( and JOY ) is a reward for living as close to nature laws as possible. * You must EARN your Health ! * EARN your FOOD by exercising ! * I only helped him help him self. * Nature works slowly -but surely- . * the fast will shrink your stomach and you will feel better. * DNOT tell anyone that you are going to fast . * Fasting is a very personal thing . * Slow me down lord. * Every hour that i am fasting , i am happier and happier. * in fresh air and solitude you will find better results. * When you are healthy you are happy.
I have very mixed feelings about this book. It felt like too much selling and pushing his name, products, and approaches. It is almost unfear to add your name to something known for ages... Book full of adjectives describing the miraculous effect of fasting, a bunch of statements with no evidence, like we are supposed to take his words for granted... This book style reminded me of the famous decade ago - movie "Secret", which also promised miracles.
And with all those reasons not to believe what is written in this book, I tried to keep in my mind that: - it was written a few decades ago, before autophagy was scientifically proven, and author won noble prize - many other books I've read with more scientific approaches have many intersections with what it said here - indeed, it is hard to argue about the age of fasting as an aspect of spiritual cleansing
So I tried not to get affected by the author's delivery and to see where his words intersected with my knowledge and experience. Outcome - I'm starting a daily fasting routine and, in 3-6 months, will see if my experience confirms what the book was claiming
While I do have several pages dog-eared and I loved all the quotes on the bottom of the pages, I did find there to be some redundancy, which really, I suppose they are trying to drive some points home. The book is also "loud" with the big titles on each page and random pictures. It's not exactly the best in terms of organization, and I don't really like how they refer to "Mother Nature" as though she's a god all on her own. How they talk/write givers the impression they are actually new age Christians rather than actual full Bible believing, Yahshua (Jesus) is my Saviour and only way to YHVH the Father Christians. The book also contains now quite out-dated food science, (y'all, rice dream? And all that soy? especially without speaking about how soy should be consumed only when it's organic, non-gmo, & sprouted and/or fermented), however, when you weed through it, there is a decent amount of good information.
I bought this book a long time ago, around 1980. Although much has come to light about Paul Bragg's showmanship and embellishments of history, I believe this book to be spot on till this day. Paul was from an earlier era and we need to cut him some slack.
If one follows his guidance I believe you'll have a long and healthy life. I used to fast religiously 36 hours each week, but that got waylaid when I started a family with 4 kids. Fasting with distilled water only is the way to go. I drink/drank copious amounts during my fasts and that helped control the hunger. (when I tried a juice fast it was a disaster - only worsened any hunger pains) . On the longer fasts that I've tried, the hunger does subside after the first 36 to 48 hours.
Of course fasting is difficult if not impossible when you're in an active family and also have to go to work. I'm planning to resume soon - kids are grown, I hope to retire soon.
The book would've received 5 stars if it wasn't trying to "Bragg" about everything. The Bragg healthy lifestyle, the Bragg this, the Bragg that. Fasting and exercise has been around for a long time. Claiming a specific format of doing something is an egotistical joke and also a necessary evil in our capitalistic society. Exploit stuff for money, in the name of solving something, popularize it, then run it's resources to the ground from mass production, and once again taking away an essence or purity of something. Subjective thoughts aside, this book is very helpful in getting you to live a much more free and healthy lifestyle. Stop overeating and fast today! One love.
