The First Hytharo #1

The Hytharo Redux

Rate this book
A THOUSAND YEARS AGO THE HYTHARO WERE WIPED OUT.

A THOUSAND YEARS LATER SPIRIC WAS SPARED.

Lost among the dune-swept ruins of ancient glass towers, 14-year-old Spiric hunts for his stolen memories. Guided by the exiled scholar that found him, he embarks on a perilous journey across the Droughtlands to uncover his origins.

He’s told his red eyes mark him as a Hytharo, one of the long-extinct storm callers that sealed all water into the air itself before they were erased from history. In the thousand years since, thirst has been quenched simply by breathing, but that hasn’t stopped the surviving runic peoples from wanting water any less.

For without it, there’s no ink, no runes, no magic, and in the vast desert wastes of the Droughtlands, magic means power.

To Spiric, the mantra is eerily familiar.

Word of his presence ripples across the Droughtlands and pressure mounts on him to reverse the Hytharo’s final, sacrificial act. It’s only as his memories begin to return that he realises the true reason his people were wiped out.

With the fragments of Spiric’s memories growing bloodier and more desperate, he must determine whether carrying out his supposed fate will cause history to repeat, or if he can forge a new destiny, both for himself and the Droughtlands.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
The story follows the journey of Spiric lost without any memories and his compelling adventures discovering about himself and his life, meeting fascinating friends and enemies along the way. His world is very complicated and I had to read very carefully (despite my need to know urgently what happens next) to fully appreciate and enjoy it. Jonathon has great skill for creating a gripping story with very likeable characters with evocative and vivid descriptions. I look forward to the next instalment.

I love a good science fiction book, especially one that makes you think about what you’re reading, and this one does just that.

There’s some great world building in this hefty book. You can really envision the desolate landscape, the author does such a great job describing it. Character development is great as well, especially Spiric’s, as he struggles to figure out his memories and what they mean. I loved Bayreth too, she was such a sassy character.

This book is filled with action and has such a good storyline. If you’re looking for a good dystopian, sci fi book with great characters and world building, this is it. I’m definitely looking forward to reading book 2.

“We are not our past, or what our past intends us to be. This is who you are, Spiric, and you get to choose how the things that led you here will lead you forward”

This book was one of the easiest this year for me to give 5 stars to. The plot was super interesting, so well developed and also very easy to follow. The book is marketed as a “Mad Max” meets “The Last Airbender” type story, and I think despite the various references I could see, this story truly is unique in its own way.

The plot twists were completely unexpected to me and after rereading a few chapters, I realised they were actually so well set up with little easter eggs left all throughout the story - you can clearly tell it was thoroughly planned out.

Spiric, Grethard, and Byreth are written in such a realistic way, in the sense that you feel for the characters as they go on this journey to recover Spiric’s memories. I personally really liked Byreth - she is a strong willed, independent, and street-smart character who contributes a lot to the plot (a rare feature for sci-fi fantasy). She is determined and remains as such despite everything the trio encountered.

I’m currently reading the ARC for book 2 in this series - “The Hytharo Origin” - and can happily say that I strongly suggest this series to anyone who enjoys sci-fi fantasy, abandoned ruins, and endless deserts.

PS: Book 2 releases on August 27th! 👀

The Hytharo Redux – four star review

“All he could think of were runes. Runes that stacked up in his palm.[] . He could only pray it was something deadly []” – page 438

As Grethard sees a boy being dragged out of a dune by nothing more than a shadow he takes the mysterious boy in. Trying to figure out who he is, Spiric goes on adventures that are far more dangerous then he thinks. With Grethard by his side, the two of them find more friend, but have to stay careful – are they really friends? Turns out Spiric is a Hytharo - which were wipped out a thousand years ago - and many people want something from him.
The further the two of them venture into the fallen world of those-of-glass the more memories hunt Spiric. He has to understand the world around him so he can understand himself which takes more time than he imagined.

The story was certainly eventful and had so much action to it! I loved it. It took me a while to get into the book but it was so worth it! ( I read the last 3rd of the book in one sitting 😊)
The pure length of the book (483 pages in the ARC) made me doubt myself if this was a good idea because I usually don´t read books that are over 400 pages but this one had the perfect length for the story to unfold and for the reader to commit and understand the world building.
I like all of the characters even though I had a little problem with knowing who was who at times (probably not a problem of the book though, but rather one of myself)

As the reader one could understand Spiric best( only to a certain extent because: dystopian fantasy…) because one learns with him what the world around him was built like and what he is/ who he really is.

Grethard had grandpa vibes and I like him as a person so much. He took Spiric in and help him along his way. Without Grethard Spiric would have never came as far as he does.

“[] … I couldn´t hide what I´d seen from them. Not after all I´ve heard” – page 150

Arallak was such an interesting character and the ending really shows that. ( can´t really say to much about him because it would spoil)

“You hunted us, just as you hunt me now!” – page 186

Byreth is such a icon. Very easy thinking of me but she is probably my favorite character of all of them! I just like the way she is herself and is a tease and acts like a [ maybe a spoiler?? ] to Spiric!!

“You are Spiric. My Spiric. This Spiric.” – page 383

I want to say that this book is especially for DUNE fans a fantastic read!! and really anyone who likes complex systems and dystopian books.

The premise was interesting and I was definitely interested at first. However, quickly, I felt things going askew for me.

At first, it feels like a normal amnesia story leading to discovery of the past, with some magic, empires and the like added in. A few chapters in, there's a bit of a shift in the main character that already complete catches the reader off guard. He goes from wanting to be Hytharo so bad that he climbs into a potentially dangerous situation, to suddenly thinking getting his memories back and remembering his powers is the last thing he wants to do. This flip flopping continues throughout the story, feeling a bit jarring.

This is maybe the crux of my issue with the book itself. Its very interesting, but the discovery journey full of twists and turns feels instead like it can't pick a path and stick to it. The attempts to constantly surprise the reader only help to exacerbate that feeling. While there is nothing wrong with taking that approach, and all good twists build off of effective foreshadowing, some of the moments that unfold made me want to ahah! but I couldn't, because I had seen it coming from a mile away and left me just a bit underwhelmed. At one point as well, I thought I was basically watching an in-universe meeting with The Architect. I half expected the main character to be chosen to repopulate Zion.

Overall, maybe worth a read if the summary interests you, but I didn't find it entirely polished to its full potential. The main character can also be a little tough to love, so keep that in mind as well.

The Hytharo Redux was a complex, well developed world with interesting characters and an in depth plotline. So much so that I will need to re-read the book I'm sure, to fully comprehend everything that happened. There is a lot going on with the different timelines of Spiric trying to remember his past, as well as the complexities of the magic systems.

I do have two complaints with the book. The first The second, is that everyone kept telling Spiric to hide what he is, he's even given goggles to wear to hide his red eyes, but every time he meets someone new the first thing he does is declare to them that he is in fact a Hytharo, and shows them his eyes. Every. Single. Time. What is the point of the goggles if he's just going to parade his identity around? I couldn't understand this.

Overall, I found the book intriguing. It's definitely got that post-apocalyptic vibe, there's magic galore and lots of (but not too many) characters to get to know and cheer for (and a few that you really want to just die).

Thank you to the author for a free copy of this book to review, I am leaving my thoughts accordingly.

It's a really easy book to read, I found myself whizzing through chapters in no time at all both because it was easy to read and because I was enjoying the world-building. Whilst I loved the world-building, there were times that I felt we could have had a little more character development and there were missed opportunities to find out more about their background. The companions especially felt like they lacked a little depth, I would have liked to have points where we found out more about them.
I liked getting the flashbacks of Spirics memories, I just would have maybe liked them to be in Italics or a different font so they were easy to define. Spiric himself is interesting but I just didn't feel he read like a 14-year-old boy, he read like he was older maybe closer to 20.
I found the way that magic was used was really interesting, I liked how they had to use the runes to be able to use it and that a lack of water is making magic a valuable commodity because they just can't make the ink for the runes. But I couldn't pinpoint a system for understanding the power hierarchy.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I read a lot of dystopia novels, it’s one of my favourite genres, but I have to say, none of them up to now have had quite the same effect or gripped me like Hytharo Redux. I absolutely love this book and flew through it in two sittings.

What a brilliant start to what will hopefully be an amazing epic fantasy series.

I found the different factions, characters and places to be very well written, with brilliant development over the course of the book. The various plot lines all interlinked perfectly.

Weiss’s world building really is top notch with lots of great detail that really make the world come alive in your imagination.

I also found the character development to be phenomenal, Spiric in particular.
The Hytharo Redux is full of action, great plot lines, brilliant characters and an absolutely amazing world.

A big, big 5 stars from me.

The Hytharo Redux by Jonathan Weiss was such an amazing book! All I knew was that it was Avatar the Last Airbender meets Dune, and boy did it deliver! I loved the world and the characters and the storyline!

This book has a unique magic system and a rich history. The main character, young Spiric, is pulled from the sands one day with little memory of who he is or how he ended up buried. Throughout his journey, he meets trustworthy and dubious people and slowly understands his place in the world. I loved how everything unfolded, and there were so many unexpected twists! I don't want to give anything away, but this was really a perfect fantasy read (especially if you loved Last Airbender)!

This was the first book I've read by Jonathan Weiss, but I'm excited for the second book in this series, and I'm definitely picking up his other books! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 stars, no question about it!

I read a lot of dystopia novels and none of them have gripped me like Hytharo Redux! I devoured this book and loved how the plot unfolded.

The different factions, characters and places are all really well written, with great development that happens over the course of the book. I loved how Spiric’s and Grethard found each other and became fast friends despite the scariness of their situations. The book moved at a great pace and I loved how detailed it was. There were lots of points where I really felt for Spiric, it must be awful to not have any memories and then to have them slowly come back. The different plot lines all interlinked perfectly and it is a book that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Prepare to travel through a desolate landscape in search of lost memories and self discovery. Spirit was a brilliant character, who grew as he searched for his memories and lost life. He travels through a desolate world, expertly created by the author, in search of himself, literally. This was a great dystopian read, full of action and adventure that definitely had me wanted to turn page after page to see what was next. I wanted to learn about Spiric as much as he himself did. I felt like I went on the journey with him. This is quite a hefty read, but we’ll worth the time it took to read it. I can’t wait to see what happens in book 2.

This is such a good Science Fiction novel, the kind that draws you in and weaves a complicated story in a detailed world. Honestly, the world building is top class, I felt like I could close my eyes and see the world Weiss was describing. This book is full of action and grips you right from the first page. The level never dips and I really enjoyed reading it. I think this will be a great read for anyone who enjoys dystopian science fiction novels.

I received a gifted copy of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and written voluntarily.

There's nothing better than an epic story of survival, knowing your roots and lots of adventure. The Hytharo Redux delivers that and more. We meet Grethard, and he seems to discover what it appears as a child, abandoned in a deserted landscape. He quickly saves the child and cares for him. That child is our protagonist named Spiric.

Spiric grows up with Grethard's teachings, but there's one thing, he doesn't remember his past. Suffering from memory loss, he begins an adventure into the unknown. What he discovers is that he's kind was eradicated a thousand years ago, and only he survived. This book had a little bit of everything, adventure, amazing world building, and en epic cliffhanger. I can't wait for book two and see what happens.

what a great start for a new epic series 🔥. it was amazing, breathtaking and unbelievable journey that I'm super excited to continue in the next book.

I could feel the vibes of dune and the maze runner in this amazing new word of sand ,machine and magic🪄 .

Weiss creates a really unique world.

With a great mix of dystopia & sci-fi, the writing is very descriptive and although there are a lot of new characters elements & terms to get to grips with, the story flows so well.

there was alot of scenes I had to hold my breath 🔥, it was amazing and very interesting 🤔 they were will written 💜.

we see a huge character development particularly from Spiric, as he tries to figure who he is & where he fits into the world. He really comes into his own in the story and brings the other characters with him. It's interesting to see how they develop with him and bond together. At times the story is so detail oriented it slows down, but that doesn't effect the overall feel of the book.

The Hytharo Redux has a very good plot , characters and environmental you will definitely enjoy it 😁

This is the first book in an exciting new series - The First Hytharo.

As ever with dystopian or high fantasy books like this, we start of with a fair amount of world building and setting the scene of this new world we find ourselves in.
This was actually done really well and didn't overpower the storyline which flowed nicely.

We also get to grips with our main character Spiric who finds out that he's the last of the Hytharo - the great storm callers of the past.
at only 14, Spiric has no memory of his people, but Grethard is there to guide him on his journey.

I really loved our main characters and it was great to watch Spiric develop throughout this book setting the mission up perfectly, ready for book 2.
Grethard was so lovely too. He really reminded me of my favourite teacher. Really taking Spiric under his wing and helping him to find out who he was and who he could become.

The writing style was exciting and the plot full of adventure which made this a great read.
At over 400 pages I expected to flag, but this really held my attention throughout and I'm already looking forward to continuing the journey in book 2.

What a start to what will surely be an amazing epic fantasy series!
The world building by Weiss is really top tier! The amount of detail really makes the world come alive and feel like you could be there with the characters. Add in the characters and the story truly comes alive in your mind.
The character development is also phenomenal, especially Spiric. He really comes into his own in the story and brings the other characters with him. It’s interesting to see how they develop with him and bond together. At times the story is so detail oriented it slows down, but that doesn’t effect the overall feel of the book.
The Hytharo Redux has action, good plot, great characters, an amazing world, and a great overall plot!

I was so excited to read this book. Especially after reading the blurb. The story was interesting from the start. After reading the first chapter I knew it was going to be a book that I would really enjoy. Being able to follow the main character through the challenges in which he had to face. With the challenges it helped the main character, developed throughout the book. I loved the writing style of this book. It was written every cleverly. And with how this book ended I am curious where the next book will go.

The Hytharo Redux is the kind of story that forced me to slow down, think deeply, and really chew on its ideas. And that's exactly what makes it such a brilliant read! The high-concept sci-fi elements are bold and complex, but incredibly rewarding once they click.

This is definitely a book that will linger in your mind long after you've finished it.

The subtle easter eggs to Jonathan Weiss' other series of works - The Flux Catastrophe - were a thrilling addition to the story. While not necessary to understanding this series of works, it was a nice reward as a reader to see the clever ways the story lines overlap and just gave me an overall better understanding and love for the fictional world of the Droughtlands.
