As a bookworm in rural Nova Scotia, a girl who always orbited the popular crowd, I craved acceptance.
During my freshman year at Scotia Academy, I devised a plan to transform myself.
My reinvention, however, leads to a chain of unsettling events, blurring the boundaries between my true self and the façade I've created.
When a baby unexpectedly appears outside my dorm room, I'm forced to live with my best friend's brother Kace Andrews—a notorious hockey player who loves all the puck bunnies.
Well, all the puck bunnies except for me.
But soon enough, he begins to see beyond my disguise, which leads to soft kisses, tender touches and late nights between the sheets.
We’re on a journey of self-discovery as we play house, but when a reckless mistake catches up with me, bringing up old hurts Kace can’t seem to outrun, I question whether our love is enough to help rebuild our shattered trust in a world consumed by betrayal.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cathryn Fox is a wife, mom, sister, daughter, aunt and friend. She loves dogs, sunny weather, anything chocolate (she never says no to a brownie) pizza and red wine. Cathryn lives in beautiful Nova Scotia with her husband, who is convinced he can turn her into a mixed martial arts fan. When not writing, Cathryn can be found Skyping with her son living in Seattle (could he have moved any farther away?) shopping with her daughter in the city, watching a big action flick with her husband, or hanging out and laughing with friends.
College was supposed to be a new beginning for Jemma where she could finally live the life she wanted and not the life she was living. She thought the plan was unfolding as expected until she finds herself with an unexpected baby and an unexpected roommate.
Even though Kace has a lot going on in his life and a lot of responsibilities he is there when Jemma needs someone the most and isn’t about to let her face the situation on her own.
I enjoyed seeing Kace and Jemma find their way to each other as they didn’t let outside forces derail what they could have together, and his support gave her the confidence and strength to become the woman she was destined to be.
I love a good sports romance! This was a first for me from this author and I was excited to dive right in.
First impressions of Kace - He's slightly grumpy (I love a good grumpy guy) in the beginning. He's had to be the more serious guy for so long that it really adds to how he approaches things in life. He's dedicated to his sister, which I love! He works hard between work, hockey, school, and being there for his sister. What I love about him too is that when there is someone in need, like Jemma, he'll do what he can to help. He went above and beyond for her.
First impressions of Jemma - She's a sweetheart. She was reinventing herself in an effort to avoid what she had been through in high school as well as what her sister did. It's a shock to her system a little bit with the change. But, she rolls with it. She hated being the "new Jemma" at times, especially during that opening scene with her at the party. A lot gets blown up though when she takes on the responsibility she's left with. Between her and Kace they have a lot to focus on.
Their budding relationship was interesting to watch. There's that push and pull with them. They were uncertain of things because of others butting in just added to the building angst with them. They were thrown into the fire so to speak There are a few things like fake relationships, forced proximity, slight grumpy sunshine, miscommunication, and seriously ridiculous people I wanted to throw down within this story. All of them added to the drama of the book and I enjoyed it!
I would have liked to learn a little more about Jemma's family. I commend the author as well for putting a focus on mental health struggles and the reality of dysfunctional family dynamics throughout the story.
ARC Review of Scoring Fast by Cathryn Fox * * * * * A college sporty romance with a suprise baby and tons of drama from our lovers, friends, family and just plain nasty thirsty people!
Jemma had a plan. Work her sorority, get through college, fakes it until she makes it. She was not one for parties and socializing to such an extent, however, the night she met Kace change it all. One minute she was partying and the next she was waking up in the same be as him...then to find a baby outside her door! Kace to the rescue! He was unsure about Jemma, sensing that she may be the very thing he did not like: liars and scammers. However, when Jemma's sister leaves her daughter in the hands of the young beautiful girl he cannot get his mind off of, he's willing to step in and step up. Now, they are roomies. The sexual tension is rising, the tenderness is growing, and the secrets are starting to show.
So many people I want to punch in this book! Trust me, you will know when you read it. One of them has me wanting to have a chemical bath and scrub all the nastiness away. Kace is a bloody jewel, manning up when most guys his age would run and look the other way. Jemma's insecurities really do get the better of her, but she evolves with Kace and he true self starts to come out. Becoming someone else sounds way to exhausting, especially when it is an introvert becoming an extrovert around horny young adults. Brynne and Alison are great as well, awesome backup.
Cathryn Fox gets a win with SCORING FAST (Rivals). Bookworm Jemma Maloney decides to reinvent herself entering her freshman year at Scotia Academy. She goes from being a quiet introvert to a sorority-girl puck-bunny, or so she wants everyone to think. She does not fool everyone, especially her roommate’s brother hockey star, Kace Andrews. There is nothing Kace dislikes more than a liar. Strange circumstances leave her temporarily raising a baby with Kace’s help.
Cathryn does a great job with SCORING FAST. The characters develop a lot throughout this story. They face challenging obstacles. They face deception. They learn to trust. The characters have great chemistry. SCORING FAST is an entertaining story that was hard to put down. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
This is the 8th book in this phenomenal series, and this is Kace and Jemma’s story. Jemma just craves acceptance in her life, and she reinvents herself, but when a baby girl is left outside her dorm room, she ends up being roommates with Kace, her best friends’ brother. Kace sees through Jemma’s façade to the person she is, and not who she perceives herself to be. This is a well written story which easy to read, with self-discovery, enemies / lovers, forced proximity, fake relationship, secrets, surprises, drama, emotions, family, friendships, tension, sports romance, and love, which leads to an entertaining, heartwarming, and steamy addictive page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.
This series simply keeps getting better and better! Each new book that comes along is my new favourite. This one has a surprise parcel that quickly changes and cements our couple together. Forced proximity brings everything out in the open. It is simply wonderful how Kace sees through Jemma’s act so quickly and easily, and falls in love with the women she is, not the person she thinks she needs to be. How Jemma gets Kace to open up and see things he has locked down in a different light. These two opened up their minds, and their hearts, and we were lucky enough to be on that journey with them <3
The Story Shows How Distrust And Jealousy Are Tough To Overcome On A College Campus Atmosphere When Trying To Find Where You Belong. Even Tougher To Find That Special Person You Like And Maybe Love. I liked the way this author developed the story and showed what the characters were thinking. It reminds me of myself when I was away from home on a campus trying to find out where I fit and how to improve my situation. I recommend this book.
Scoring Fast is a great addition to the Rivals series by Cathryn Fox. The book has a surprise parcel that adds an interesting twist to the story. The steamy scenes are well-written and full of anticipation, making it a fast read. The characters are relatable, and the story is engaging. The book has great potential, and I can't wait to see how the story continues. Overall, Scoring Fast is a sexy and enjoyable read that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys romance novels.
I enjoyed reading Scoring Fast, book 8 in Cathryn Fox's Scotia Storms spicy rom-com series. Set in my home province of Nova Scotia, I really enjoyed the character's visit to Shelburne and in particular the Sandy Point Lighthouse, a destination I made in the spring of this year for the first time. I was also pleased when I read the epilogue and it made mention of the store I work at, Dartmouth Book Exchange. I look forward to reading Cathryn's next release.
