If a gun goes off and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? When an innocent hiker is gunned down in the middle of the woods, Special Agent Emily Slate finds herself back in the town where it all began, looking for answers. After some harrowing cases and some narrow misses, Emily knows that an FBI Agent’s job is never done as she returns to the small mountain town of Stillwater. What at first looks like an accident, is soon revealed to be part of something more A hunter, using humans as his targets. The only problem is, Emily can’t prove it. But she’s been in this job long enough to know a predator when she sees one. As she fights to uncover the truth, she’ll also have to face a personal choice, one that tests her loyalty not only to herself, but also to those she loves the most. Love, it seems, is always complicated, especially when your life is constantly on the line. This time, though, she may have to make the ultimate choice. Join Emily in this exhilirating new adventure where the hunter becomes the hunted, and no one knows what’s around the next corner.
I have to say it was refreshing to see Emily in such a mundane, potentially awkward, position. It’s clear Liam’s parents have some boundary issues and they blame Emily for Liam’s (latest) brush with death. Liam is whisked back to Stillwater (where it all began!) to recuperate under his mother’s watchful glare. Emily follows, not only to show support and to help Liam but also to ensure the elder Colls understand she’s not one to be pushed around.
While in Stillwater Emily gets roped into helping the understaffed Stillwater police department and its new Chief, Salazar, investigate a puzzling crime. A seemingly accidental shooting of a hiker turns out to be so much more. Following her gut, Emily finds herself on the trail of a potential serial shooter who has been operating under the radar in the surrounding communities for years.
The murder mysteries that drive these stories all serve as vehicles to force Emily to confront things about herself. Be they bad habits, insecurities, commitment issues… they all reflect back on her and push her personal growth.
We still have the mystery of the anonymous letters Emily has been receiving and, if the epilogue chapter is any indication, we’re likely to get some answers soon. I’m chomping at the bit to see what surprises Alex Sigmore has in store for us.
This author improves with each iterative book in this series. I was not expecting to go back to Stillwater, but it was an incredible ride - and my reading this during Thanksgiving and family was aptly timed.
I am not one to play the whodunit game when reading these books, but Alex never ceases to surprise us with these complex unsubs, and I am certainly no Columbo.
The book moves like a speeding rollercoaster, so be sure to keep all arms and legs inside the car at all times - and yes, do strap in, because Emily is a dangerous (though good) driver.
I love this author and this series, It's got everything. Emily can't seem to help herself but has slowed down a micron. Liam is turning in to her everything and her best friend, Zara, seems to keep her a little more leveled.
Emily runs to help Liam who barely made it out of the fire that was her mothers house.
Emily found out Liam was in the hospital. He had been investigating the house her mother had been raised in. Trying to find out why she is getting letters that say they are from her mother. She knows her mother is dead. Liam is just about ready to come home to DC when his parents arrive and take over their lives. Take Liam home to the town they met in. The town that now has a new killer they need help finding. Emily will need to have something to do while waiting for Liam to recover so she takes on the challenge. She doesn’t realize she has open a new can of worms the kind that takes on a life of its own.
Another great read. This series is full of intricate puzzles that are the kind that keep the reader engaged. Never seems to be a lull in the action. Looking forward to the next installment and hoping there will be an answer to the underlying story.
Alex Sigmore's latest FBI Agent Emily Slate thriller is out and with a bang! Edge of the Woods is initially a slow burner that heats up fast, leaving you burning for the exciting conclusion.
Emily's boyfriend, Agent Liam Coll, is still in recovery from the house fire in Millbrook where they were last looking for clues into Emily's past. Liam's lungs are severely inflamed from smoke inhalation. Emily covers the raw, red scar on her neck before she goes to see him.
Edge of the Woods explores family relationships, the good, bad and the ugly. Segueing from Emily's past to Liam's family, much is revealed about how Liam's interactions with his Mom and Dad have shaped his personality. Shocking information comes to light, influencing both Emily and Liam's plans for the future.
Despite the fact that Emily is supposed to be on leave, keeping Liam company while he gets better, she ends up armpits deep in backwoods intrigue. Before you can say Zara Foley, Emily and Liam are tracking a strange serial killer.
As the case screams to the finish, you'll have bitten off every fingernail. Exhaustedly, you'll turn to the Epilogue, only to find…that case in Millbrook where Liam almost died? Well, it's not over. To be continued…
Someone is hunting humans, striking with one shot from a distance. Are these unrelated incidents or is there a serial killer on the loose? Lucky for the folks in these parts, FBI Agent Emily Slate just happens to be back in Stillwater to care for her boyfriend Liam when a hiker is killed. And lucky for Emily, this case pops up just in time to distract her from interacting with Liam’s overbearing family.
While I enjoyed the murder part of this one, I didn’t care for Liam’s family, but I’m assuming that’s by design. Let’s see if they can win over Emily (and me) going forward.
Edge of the Woods is out now and available for free with #KindleUnlimited.
Thank you @AlexSigmore for the advanced copy of this book. Looking forward to the next one!
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. In her service as an FBI Agent Emily Slate has endured several harrowing nearly life-taking scrapes but what her boyfriend and fellow Agent Liam Coll took on to retrieve knowledge of Emily's family has left her haunted; and now all she wants is to give whatever Liam will need to recover. Liam's parents change the plan and before Emily can really object, Brianna and Sean Coll sweep their son back to Stillwater- the small town that got Emily's career pulled back from the precipice while rooting out the deep seeded corruption by the town's former Chief. Feeling more like a third wheel, Emily struggles to do what's best for all involved... but from the moment she hears of a bizarre "accident" and gets a look at the file, Emily can't ignore the death of Josh Newsome is a very well crafted murder. Assisted by Stillwater's new Chief and fellow officers including Liam and his father; chasing down this elusive killer makes Emily and Liam confront the possibility they may not be able to catch an individual that has managed to not make waves for so long. As the case unfolds, Emily finds herself unintentionally embroiled in Liam's family drama in complex ways that is both mesmerizing and frustrating at the same. When the case is smashed wide open, Emily is racing the clock before their killer vanishes once again.

Edge of the Woods is the twelfth book in the Emily Slate Series by Alex Sigmore. This has the vibes of crime thrillers that feel like binge-worthy TV shows, but in book form. Alex Sigmore has created FBI agent, Emily Slate, who’s tough, smart, and just the right amount of emotionally messy to make her feel real and relatable. She’s not some flawless superhero type - she’s been through loss, made mistakes, and still pushes forward, which makes you root for her even harder. Each book has its own mystery, but there’s also this ongoing thread about Emily’s personal life and career struggles that keeps you hooked from one installment to the next. The twists are sharp, and while you might guess a few things, the author still manages to throw in curveballs that make you go, wait, WHAT?! Well worth the read. Happy Reading…
Now that I have read 12 Emily Slate books I need to tell you how I'm feeling about it. At 1st I started out liking Emily for having Guts and being strong et cetera. But having reached the 12th book and finishing it , I'm starting to dislike her. She's really a pain in the butt and I have found that people going rogue Can put other people in a lot of danger. So I'm hoping it gets toned down a little bit. She's now coming across as quite a know it all and I know better than you and that kind of thing rather than just an agent that follows her gut; And I really started to hope that she gets put in her place a little bit more. Her ego is really huge.
As with the other books I couldn't put this one down either. This author definitely knows how to draw you in. . I think if I could do s do over of my life I would go into CSI or the FBI I find these mysteries so captivating to get into how the minds of crimals work but netter how the Agents go about figuring it all out. Another great rrsd. On to the next one!
Lovers of psychological profiling, this is for you! I loved the profiling aspect that came along with this case. Leave it to Emily to link a single “accidental” hunting accident to a pattern of suspicious deaths throughout the state. I loved the hunt for a killer no one else thinks exists, and Emily’s trust in her gut to find the man behind the shootings. A great read!
I couldn't put the book down. The mystery keeps me interested. A easy read and moves a long so I was anxious to see what is next to the final conclusion. Now what Emily do? Will she stay with her boyfriend, move on or find her mother?
I just could.not put these nooks down. Every time I would get to the end of a book, I couldn't wait to start another. The story lines ate so fascinating, you can hardly wait to see what's going to happen next.
I love the Emily Slate FBI mystery books. This one was a little slow. It really didn't grab me like the others. Hopefully, the next one will give me the chilling excitement that I had before.
You know what you guys I lied. I’m not stopping. I just have 3 more and then I will actually be able to move on from Ms Emily Slate — just every book ends on a cliff hanger and Emily is such a badass and Zara is doing field work again ugh I just can’t help it
Congratulations Alex on yet another brilliantly written book now I have read all of your books to date and I can't wait to read your new book called The Missing Bones 😊📖
Wowza. Another high octane ride. Agent Emily Slate can’t seem to relax. She is always in the middle of a wild case. And Wallace is getting on my nerves. I miss Janice. Zara continues to be a favorite of mine. And Liam is growing on me. I also need to know about the current crazy thread. Diving into more.
