The 18 essays in this volume offer a cross-section of Preus's research and commentary on the doctrine of justification and on the Lutheran Confessions and their application in the life of the church today. Also included in this volume are 4 reflections on the life and ministry of Robert Preus provided by David P. Scaer, John Stephenson, Kurt Marquart and Daniel Preus.
Preface and introduction written by Klemet I. Preus, Robert's son.
Didn't read every piece included here, but the ones I read were excellent. If you want a good, essay-length, and rigorous explication and defense of the classic Lutheran doctrine of justification, read his essay on Quenstedt or the one on justification in high Lutheran orthodoxy. His stuff on confessionalism is likewise excellent, skillfully defending a continued confessionalism as congruent with Sola Scriptura.
Preus was arguably the best conservative Lutheran theologian of the last half of the 20th century, and he was sometimes palpably worshipful in his writing. Don't miss the historic Lutheran contribution to mere Protestant Christianity.
