Montana is a magical place to Genell. Late in the 1800s, Westerners called it "The Last Best Place" and to her it seems to be so still today. The enormity of the sky and the mountains, the few people with so much space and so much strength, and the land that seems to go on forever hold a powerful attraction that she loves to use for the background of her books.

Genell is also a lifelong rodeo fan. Growing up, attending the Frontier Days Celebration and Rodeo in Fort Smith was a yearly tradition of her family. She and her sisters loved the danger and the drama and the flamboyant personalities who were part of the show. They played at being trick riders and barrel racers for weeks afterward.

So, when she realized that Chase Lomax, rodeo cowboy, who was a character in her first single title romance, Montana Blue, would be the hero of her next book, Montana Gold, she felt she had been given the best of all possible worlds. What a perfect excuse for attending more rodeos and performances of the PBR, the Professional Bull Riders! What a great reason to make another trip to Montana! Callie Sloane, alone and pregnant and kicked out by her father, she decides to fulfill her past love's dream and go the Cherokee Strip and set up a homestead there, despite all the hardship she knows she will face. But right when she is about to stake her claim, a handsome renegade comes insisting that she is on his claim. Nick half Cherokee but no one knows that he is indian, or he would never be able to have this land, that is very precious to him. So when he comes across a lone widow claiming his land, he forces her to claim another piece of land, but what he never expected was to be drawn to this fiery woman who takes his breath away, despite how he keeps saving her, and starts being her protector, and finds that she is a temptress who entices him more than any other woman has.Nick is the second installment in the Renegade series. This is a story about two people that have both been hurt when it comes to the matter of the heart. Although their pasts are very different, they both know pain, and need each other more than either of them fully realize. I found the plot to be strong and full of excitement. I really liked the characters in this book, they were very likable, and both so alike, they just fit perfectly. I did feel through most of the book like there was something missing from the story and from their relationship as well. There was definitely a sensuality about their relationship, and a tender love story, however especially toward the end, I felt like there should have been something more in it. However overall it was a an entertaining adventure, and I had a fun time reading Nick's story.

Callie Sloane, alone and pregnant, was kicked out of her father's home because she dared to love the family's enemy. So, posing as a widow, she decides to pursue her dead lover's dream and stake a claim on the Cherokee Strip. There, she alternately competes and cooperates with Nickajack, a half-Cherokee who wants to reclaim his people's land. Nick doesn't want the feisty woman on his land, but he finds her spirit admirable and can't seem to just leave her go. He feels a need to protect her and see her succeed. Both have had troubled pasts and a lot of pain when it comes to love, but friendship and love help them heal.

The first part of this story was really good. I enjoyed seeing Callie and Nick argue it out, but then also develop a friendship. Callie was a bit irritating and borderline TSTL in her stubborn determination to do it all herself. I don't respect that brand of stubbornness very much. Not when someone is offering much needed help. It wasn't until the end that the story started losing stars - primarily in it's wrap up, which I feel, didn't wrap it up enough. First, you've got Callie, who was desperately in love with her baby's father, Vance Harlan, and she claims that he is the only man he could ever love and sees the baby as a memorial to that love. Yet in the end, less than 2 months after his death and she's in love with Nick, yet she never talks out those feelings with him. There's no moment when she acknowledges that she'll always love Vance, but now she loves Nick just as much - that sort of thing. Nor is there a moment that we get to see where Nick starts to think of her baby as "his." Considering he only learns of it at around the 80% mark, there isn't much time for him to process it. And unfortunately, this story doesn't have a much needed epilogue where we can see him loving the child as well. It kind of felt like they said "I Love You" and we were supposed to buy into the happy ending with no other talking about it. But the fact remains that there were some complicated issues and feelings in there that never got talked about.

Ooooh, I remember I read this in my native language YYEAAAARRS ago and I never forgot it! (It is called "Oklahomas rose" in norwegian) I was NOT able to find the book so I needed to ask the publisher here for the original title and YAY they found it! :D
I remember I loved it way back when, so I'm going to re-read it and see if it still deserves four stars. ;)
