3.7 Stars - I found this book at a Book Extravaganza and met the lovely author herself who immediately sold me on it with it's nostalgic, fun and exciting premise and the clear passion and care that she put into this book. Thank you Loz for chatting with me and signing my books :3
This was a really fun read - full of feeling, brilliant creativity and great ideas. It's a really good debut novel! Vampires have been done many times before and it does play into some of the cliches and at the same time flips and adds new ideas into the genre. I absolutely adore the fact that instead of the human having to/wanting to turn into a vampire, that it's all flipped and the vampires want to turn human! So cool to question and explore the ethics of being a vampire, eternal life and the grief of losing one's humanity. Really creative and interesting details like the Behemoth forms.
The coven and the band becomes so wholesome, there's quite a few characters but the dynamics between them all are interesting and sweet. Found family is definitely in here and I loved it a lot. The fact that they are all in a band and love their music and want to follow their dream gives a wholesome edge that vampires don't usually have! The dialogue is one of the writing strengths for me, the banter and serious conversations felt really organic.
The chapters come across as clearly structured and visualised scenes, I think it would translate really well into a show! It's quite a long book and these clear scenes made the storyline easy to follow and made you want to keep reading to find out what would happen next.
The descriptions of clothing, the music and the concerts give a nostalgic emo/punk/goth atmosphere that is really fun! I wonder if there could be even more little details of that era and culture to add in to make it extra immersive. Love the playlist at the back what a cool detail <3 There was also a little bit of hostility towards mainstream fashion and in particular female characters that were wearing them which was a little unfriendly, alternative lifestyles can be celebrated/protected and mainstream beauty standards can be criticised without putting others down. That being said the friendships that form between, Kat, Tabitha and Laura are lovely.
The romance between Will and Kat for me followed a few cliches and subverted some, I'm very fussy about romance (especially heteronormative/heterosexual relationships) to be fair! I like how the two communicated frequently about their feelings, and that there is a general sense of each preserving their individuality and friendships alongside their relationship together.
Only things to note is that there is quite a lot of typos/grammar mistakes throughout the book - easily fixed and doesn't stop it being readable, also shows that this clearly a work of human passion! A great first novel - the writing could gain further strength by using more stylised, detailed writing devices as quite often the feeling or detail is told or explained rather than shown. There is undoubtedly a lot of wonderful emotion behind the writing, it would be lovely for it to have more tools to express itself. Overall, such a cool idea that took a lot of hard work to turn into a whole book. I got to have some real joy and reminiscing with my younger self that was besotted with the 2000s emo/goth scene and vampires stories reading this, so thank you!

For a first book published by this author I have to give it a 4.5! It’s Twilight and Buffy the vampire slayer rolled into one for me. The characters all had their own amazing personalities, and the story was written at a very good pace. The sudden plot twist really got me, I wasn’t expecting it at all.
Only critique I have is the editing, words were sometimes not past tense or missing, but for a first published book the story was phenomenal and exactly what she told me it would be like when she sold it to me. Looking forward to buying the next one at a book event in October!

I bought this at the Birmingham bookfest last August and was promised it would satisfy the hole in my heart left by the fact that Twilight came out sixteen years ago. And, ya know what, Midnight Devotion absolutely delivered! Loz Cadman is a great indie writer with a fun story to tell and this was the exact kind of vampiric emofest my heart craved. Southampton needs vampires irl.
I highly recommend if you, like me, were the peak age for Twilight back in the day and need something to remind you that emo is forever. I also loved the recommended playlist at the back!

When I read the author’s note and found out this book was inspired by the exact same Salem show I went to, I had to pick it up and I was not disappointed!! This was a really fun read for those who love both bands and vampires. I thought the fight scenes in particular were really well done!
My main critique would just be the editing as there was the odd missing word or sentence which didn’t flow quite as well as it could’ve. However, for a debut indie author the story was phenomenal and I will be immediately diving into the sequel because THAT ENDING !!

Really enjoyed it. It was like a version of the Twilight story. I can't wait to read the next book
