An overworked salaryman and a mischievous cashier with a dual personality form an unexpected bond in this sweet-and-sour comedy!
After the twists of a misdiagnosis, Sasaki's strange yet calming nighttime smokes with Tayama continue. The office worker is still unaware that Tayama and Yamada, his therapeutic idol, are the same woman! Sasaki and Yamada are merely customer and cashier inside the store. But as more quirky supermarket employees enter the mix, will Sasaki's relationship with Tayama begin to change?
I’m enjoying this series BUT I can also see myself getting bored with it in the future if we don’t see a reveal happen in the next few volumes. For the moment, it’s charming, funny, and light and I’m looking forward to reading volume 3.
The ludicrous mistaken identity premise of this series still manages to work for me as the main characters bond over cigarettes behind the supermarket. It's quiet and slow and comforting to wrap myself up into.
But then the bonus story and material slapped me in the face with the age gap, literally showing us pictures of the man at age 22, graduating college, and his future smoking partner as an infant. Oof.
i am def hooked on this manga and will be picking up the other volumes
relationship is the definition of slowburn, so if you arent into that, maybe pick up a different book. but they have such good chemistry and their interactions are just too cute, i cant wait for the reveal of the double personalities...
i physically can't bring myself to rate below 5 stars, love this series so much
Well, there’s not exactly a plot here, so it’s not much of anything to describe. Sasaki and Tayama continue to meet up and smoke and just discuss nothing terribly important. Once in a while there’s a dog and occasionally they get that much closer together.
If you liked the first volume, this is that. If you did not like the first volume, this is also that. The chapters pull from the same sort of ideas each time, just sort of assemble them in a variety of ways, and keep on going.
Which is perfectly okay for the genre. Sasaki can’t figure out that Tayama is actually the kindly Yamada of his supermarket fantasies, but the two of them keep forging their bond in little tiny increments. Sasaki manages to survive work a little better, Tayama has trouble holding onto her tougher side when Sasaki is nice, etc.
Little tweaks manifest themselves - torrential rain and missing ashtrays and stifling heat - just to give things another angle of attack. Sometimes there are little jokes, although the only one I really feel is worth a mention is the shojo parody page Tayama’s boss is reading. You have to zoom in to make it out, but it’s a very brisk swipe at I Wanna Eat Your Pancreas.
Anyway, ‘two people who have a lot in common slowly become close via talking’ is a vibe I often enjoy and so it goes here. The art is very solid and it conveys the chemistry brewing between them. I really appreciate Tayama’s design, as well, which is attractive without going full ‘manga babe’ design. It’s quieter, as befits the story, much like those little moments between them that land really nicely.
There just isn’t a whole lot to say without talking about what they’re talking about and that’s not much fun to write or read about. The ways they subtly influence one another and how the story shows the difference in their ages is very well done. It’s a light read, but certainly a rewarding one as well.
3.5 stars - it’s not as wonderful as the first volume since the story was so delightfully novel then. Even without that aspect, this doesn’t drop the quality and rather maintains it at a level that I’m quite satisfied with.
It was a fairly uneventful volume, but did have a bit of character development for the two leads and introduced a couple of new characters. Overall, it was a good time.
Every time Sasaki gets frightened by something 'Tayama' says or does, I remember that one test they did back in Vol 1 where his personality test results came back as 'You look down on others even though you're a little submissive'🤣🤣🤣🤣
More of the same. Normally, I'd want the mangaka to switch it up; however, this series has such a solid formula that I genuinely won't mind if it's just 10 volumes of this over and over again. Sasaki and Yamada have great chemistry and it's just so fun to see them interact with each other.
This series is like potato chips. I keep saying “just one more quick chapter and then I’ll go do something else”, and suddenly I’ve finished the bag … I mean volume. Hilarious and sweet.
