At Christmas, Kathryn Dark is visiting her father for the first time since her mother died. The reason? She has received a text from her mother's phone... Thus begins a year in which we weave in and out of the lives of people who experience ghosts of one kind or another. But ghosts aren't what we think they are.
A time-trapped forest. A haunted Tube station. Houses filled with spirits. Doppelgangers. Loss and longing, hope and hopelessness, cold love and burning anger. These are the stories from the Calendar of Ghosts...

I consumed this book in one sitting. It feels more like a well crafted album than a collection of short stories, which makes sense knowing the author’s passion for music.
Calendar of Ghosts by Jason Cobley is an intriguing read with a fascinating concept, but it didn’t fully live up to my expectations. The premise is compelling—ghostly encounters linked to different times of the year—but while some parts were atmospheric and engaging, others felt a little underdeveloped.
The book shines when it leans into its eerie storytelling, creating a chilling and immersive experience in certain scenes. Some moments truly stood out, especially when the narrative embraced the idea that “time is full of echoes, and some refuse to fade.” However, the pacing felt uneven. Some sections flowed well and pulled me into the ghostly mysteries, while others were slow or repetitive. At times, I wanted more depth in how the ghosts’ stories connected to the overarching narrative.
Overall, I enjoyed parts of Calendar of Ghosts, but it didn’t completely grip me. It’s a decent read for those who love ghostly tales, but I was hoping for something a little more immersive.
This book is perfect for the spooky season approaching, but can be read at any time of year. A real mix of stories thrown into this, and its difficult yet exciting to see where this will take you next!
A little creepy, and it kept me on my toes. I absolutely flew through this collection, and was keen to see where the next one would take me. Intriguing, surprising and very readable.
I loved it!!! Read it in just 2 sittings. Shades of MR James but contemporary. Beautifully woven together, each story is a stand alone gem. I/m hoping there will be a book 2. Recommend you buy it.
