Overall pretty fun but also silly. Very interesting and dated ideas about gender roles, and the style of exposition is so different from things I normally read. Some good spooks, though!
More specific thoughts on some stories: The Derelict is okay! I don’t know if they understand that mold is alive? Ocean Ogre is basically fanfic of the Demeter from Dracula. Interesting display of masculine values Ghouls of the Sea: I like it! Funny prose The Voice in the Night: good but so many words! Feels like a religious allegory for something The Black, Dead Thing: really good and funny. Undertones of racism?? Not sure. “Black thing” with a certain “zone” it inhabits and impersonates people? The Temple: I like when the men call other men very handsome. So racist and classist (no surprise) but couched in the idea that the narrator is a German supremacist?? “the moans of the sick men were decidedly annoying.” The Lure of Atlantis: being gay or ugly could save your life? Science can save you? The Uncharted Isle: boring The Night Ocean: yeah okay! Kinda fun Fire in the Galley Stove: love it. Yes my girls, get your meal The Black Kiss: fun! Weird! Funky and sexy. Kisses will kill you! Lost: finally, some female characters. Passes the bechdel test! Although she was emotional, Marion had plenty of common sense. The Thing in the Weeds: opens with “this is an extraordinary tale.” Okay.
