To my brother’s teammates, I’m off-limits. But when my sorority sister announces she’s bringing my ex to reunion weekend, I need a hot date…and fast.
It’s not every day you ask your brother's teammate to be your fake boyfriend. But desperate times call for gorgeous, heart-stoppingly impulsive measures.
Denver Kodiaks' sharpshooter Miles is a world-champion athlete with a smile that lights up the darkest room and a cocky charm that’s impossible to resist.
But to me, he's always been more: the guy who puts friends and family first, and my college crush.
When my sorority sister decides to bring my ex to the reunion, I need a swoon-worthy plus-one who can have my back and save my pride. It’s the perfect solution…until Miles raises the stakes for both of us.
He says he’s only playing to win. Except I wonder when his gaze hunts mine across a crowded room. When he protects me with a fierceness that steals my breath. When a make-believe kiss ignites a wildfire inside me.
I’ve built walls and acted tough, guarding myself from getting hurt again. Miles gets under my defenses and challenges me in ways I’ve never been challenged.
Soon, I’m fighting feelings that have been simmering for years. In the mountains of Vail, Colorado, our pretend relationship starts feeling dangerously legit…
Because it’s hard to fake what’s always been real.

Hard to Fake is an NBA basketball romance with lots of banter and spice. It’s the first book in the Denver Kodiaks series. Miles and Brooke’s story continues in Hard to Take.
Piper Lawson is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of smart, steamy romance! She writes about women who follow their dreams (even the scary ones), best friends who know your dirty secrets (and love you anyway), and complex heroes you’ll fall hard for (especially after talking with them). Brains or brawn? She’ll never make you choose. Piper lives in Canada with her tall, dark and brilliant husband. She believes peanut butter is a protein, rose gold is a neutral, and love is ALWAYS the answer.
Hard to Fake is such a delicious, quick and all consuming story. I loved it from start to finish. And I absolutely cannot wait to read the second book in this series!
The book is about Miles Garrett. A famous basketball player who loves to date women casually. He loves his freedom and takes care of his gram. I absolutely love his bond with his grandmother. Every scene she was in made my heart beat with joy.
We also follow Brooke. Her mother just cut off her allowance. And she is desperately trying to find jobs to support herself. She isn't taking the easy way out and really is fighting for the jobs she wants to have. When her former sorority sisters organize a weekend away she sees it as a chance to reel in an important influencer job. But when she sees one of her sorority sisters is taking her ex-boyfriend with her she doesn't want to go alone anymore.
Miles Garrett is her brother's best friend and as a teen she had a huge crush on him. They still sizzle when they are together. And she asks him to come with her.
"I have a lot riding on this, Miles. And you're not capable of that kind of deception." "Act like I am head over heels for you?" Like I haven been for a while?" His smile is heart stoppingly sexy. "Game on, Princess."
And he agrees. And that is what this delicious book is about. It's about two people who share a genuine bond. But they also love to bicker and support the other one unconditionally. And the longer they are together. The harder the fire burns.
"You're better at this than I thought," I manage. "At what?" "Pretending." His eyes are blue fire. "You have no idea how good I can be."
Brooke realizes how unconditional his support is. And how strongly he wants to help her. And the supposedly fake touches burn them both brightly.
"What are you doing?" I demand. "Giving you something new to get worked up about," he murmurs. I'm dragged upward by the force as his mouth crushes down to mine.
Love these two to pieces! Really recommend this hot, fun, quick, amazing love story! 5 big stars from me for this beauty!
“I have a lot riding on this, Miles. And you’re not capable of that kind of deception.” “Act like I’m in head over heels for you? Like I have been for a while?…Game on, Princess.” I officially beat the title “Kodashian” with NO SHAME after finishing this book. Actually, let’s be honest, 4 chapters into this book. Fake dating?! Sign me the HECK up. Fake dating, but they’ve always kinda liked each other, but she’s his teammates little sister & his team is too important to him & he doesn’t want to mess things up?! DOUBLE SIGN ME UP. One of the SLOWEST burns (in the best way) I’ve read this year & it was the best build up that could have possibly happened. Brooke & Miles’ connection is INSANE. Literally fireworks everywhere, sparks flying all over the place, time standing still when they are together & yet, I really have no idea how their story is going to continue. I was extremely shocked by the ending (like literally my jaw hit the floor, thanks piper lawson for that shock). Piper Lawson ate this up & left no crumbs. I can’t wait to continue this series & hear more of Miles’ dirty mouth & see more of Brooke’s navigation through her feelings. SO. STINKIN. GOOD.
3.5 stars –This was a cute and fun read with good chemistry between the characters. I enjoyed the playful banter and sweet moments, but some of the drama felt a little over the top at times. Still, it’s an easy, entertaining romance if you’re looking for something light with a bit of spice.
Brooke has been newly cut off financially from her mother and is desperate to make it on her own. In order to seal the deal of a contract with a sorority sister, Brooke must go to a reunion weekend which her ex will also be at. So, she definitely needs a fake date!! Who better than her brother's teammate?
Miles is everythinggg!! He cares about Brooke so much and would never let anything bad happen to her. Talk about the perfect book boyfriend! I can't wait to see where Miles && Brooke take their story next ❤️
Miles is a hot shot pro basketball player and also Brooke's brother's teammate and best friend. But he is also Brooke's college crush. So how did they end up fake dating? When Brooke finds out her sorority sister is bringing her college ex-boyfriend to their sorority reunion weekend, she needs a plus one and Miles is the perfect fake boyfriend. But what happens when they start fighting their feelings from one another and secrets are revealed?

📚 Book Tropes - Brother's Best Friend - Teammate's Sister - Fake Dating - Pro Basketball MMC - Cinnamon Roll Hero - Sassy Heroine - Secret Mutual Pining - One Bed
💭 My Thoughts: Ok so first things first, I had no clue that this was the first book in a trilogy following Miles and Brooke. And it wasn't until like 54% I was like is this leaving me on a cliffhanger? And guess what? It did! I was left with a cliffy with way too many unanswered questions and bow I have to wait for the next book! How rude!!! Just kidding, kind of.
So first things first, I love the brother's best friend trope. Doesn't matter what kind of book it is, I love the forbidden and secret relationship that develops. It makes me a giddy fool. And this book has all of the good banter, angst and swoon worthy moments. I loved how these two have been mutually pining for each other for years. And I can't wait to see how the secrets that were revealed play out. For example, what happened with that phone call that Miles took that made him leave their weekend early without telling Brooke goodbye? And why was Brooke's brother waiting for her at her apartment saying they need to talk? Talk about what? I have way too many questions and theories! But honestly that's the best part about books that are left on cliffhangers if you ask me.
So I would most definitely recommend this book if you love a brother's best friend sports romance that happens to be left on a cliffhanger. It was a super quick read. It could most definitely be read in one sitting which is what I did.
*A huge thank you to Piper Lawson and Valentine PR for the opportunity to read Hard to Fake as an ARC in exchange for my honest thoughts, opinions and review.
Brooke needs a fake date to impress a sorority sister to give her a job contract so she asks her brother’s fellow nba team mate, Miles. I really liked how Brooke and Miles had undeniable chemistry. They were a good fit for each other. All the drama was so much fun and I’m dying to know more about Miles:) I’m really excited to see where both of their stories go in book 2!
If you love sports romance and brothers best friend trope then you should def check this out. It’s a short and fast paced read.
This was a really fun read! I was invested right from the get go and have loved all the banter and swooning between Miles and Brookes! Brother’s best friend is one of my favorite tropes so it was a real treat to read this basketball romance story!
Hard to Fake is the first book in the Denver Kodiak series.
This fake dating, brother’s best friend story follows Brooke and Miles. There is obvious chemistry between Brooke and Miles from the beginning. This is a short, fast-paced read and is book one of what will be a trilogy. The character development and world building is sort of just starting in this first book. The foundation is there and I expect it to get stronger in the coming books.
Personally, I’m more a fan of longer interconnected stand alone a rather than series spelled out in multiple shorter books. However, this is still a fun read and hooked me enough to want to continue to see how everything unfolds and how it ends.
There is high society drama. The MMC is a sweetheart. It's Brother's best friend. One Bed. Sports Romance & their story will continue in the next two books!!!
When I picked this book, I didn't know it will end on a cliffhanger & I am kind of sad about it but on a happier note, this book is light and refreshing and the dialogues between the characters are SUPREME. The fact that he wants her and didn't shy away from expressing it was perfect..
I loved the sorority drama and everything about the reunion from the ex to the attempt to get the collaboration deal.
Meh, I didn’t really like the writing style tbh (I listened to it). I love the fake dating trope, however, I didn’t think it was done justice tbh (just a fake bf for a weekend). I thought the fmc seemed a little privileged (not but yes?? Like rich but not??? Not like an asshole but like a little extra?? Idk) just wasn’t vibing w it. Liked it but not great.
This was such a fun, quick, hot read which is exactly why I always love to read Piper ! Miles Garret is a superstar basketball player and the ultimate ladies man who always keeps it casual . The only important woman in his life was his gram and their bond was something so incredibly beautiful . Then we have Brooke who is trying to find her way in life (after being cut off by her mother) by finding a career that she really loves . But when her influencer business journey will cross paths with her ex-boyfriend, Brooke asks the only person she knows to attend with her as her fake boyfriend .. her brother’s best friend, Miles Garret .
This was such a great book and I am seriously beyond excited to see what the rest of this series will bring us !
This is book one in the Denver Kodiaks series and it can be read as a complete stand alone .
This book was given to me for honest review by Valentine PR + Literary Management .
Miles and Brooke are my new favorite Kodiak couple. He’s such a big teddy bear and I just love it. Their banter was it. It was the best. I laughed so hard at their antics. I’m trying to figure out what to say here without spoilers because everything feels like a spoiler. I will say that I couldn’t put this one down. I ended up reading until 4 in the morning and as my eyes were closing and sleep was trying so hard to claim me, I was annoyed that I had to stop. I didn’t want to stop reading. Brooke is one of those girls who has to be perfect at all times. Image is everything. So what happens when she can’t step out in that perfect outfit, with the perfect hair, and perfect shoes? What happens when life puts her in a chokehold and she has no choice but to sink or swim? Miles seems like he doesn’t care too much about anything, except his team and the sexy girl who stole his attention and then some. But she’s off limits, so he does what any guy in that situation would do. Their chemistry was explosive. Despite trying to pretend they don’t like each other… which was quite comical… they cannot deny it. This one has all the tropes too. All the fun little twists and turns that make your heart swoon. I cannot wait for book two. Literally dying for it.

Piper!!! Where have you been all my life and why the hell haven’t I read one of your books before? Shame on me! To say I enjoyed this would be an understatement, I sailed through the pages and had finished it before I’d even blinked to be honest. It was truly a testament to how good the book was that I didn’t realise I was closing in on the end as quickly as I did. I adored Miles and Brooke so much, they were the perfect main characters to bring this story to life. I can’t wait to see what’s to come in this series.
Fake to real romances are one of my FAVORITE tropes. Add in the fact that they've crushed on each other for a while and I am all for it! Miles and Brooke did not disappoint! They lit up the pages together. This ended on a cliffhanger that I was not expecting going into this. I'm anxiously waiting for the next book to see what is going on.
Read if you enjoy✨ • teammate’s little sister • brother’s best friend • fake dating • pro athlete hero 🏀
What do you do when you need a date to a college reunion where your ex boyfriend is now dating your sorority nemesis?! Of course you ask the NBA player you crushed on for years and also happens to be your brothers friend!!
It’s simple. One weekend. Fake relationship. What could possibly go wrong?
This was a good start to a series. Miles and Brooke are a total match. Every time they’re together it just makes sense. The easy banter and playfulness was endearing. Miles with her grandma? So sweet. I’m curious how things will play out. Definitely some questions that need to be answered.
If you are looking for a sports romance that is full of tension and angst, then look no further! Hard to Fake is a brother's best friend romance that follows Miles and Brooke as they pretend to date in order to help Brooke land a sponsorship deal.
I don't know what kind of magic was in this book, but I couldn't put it down! I absolutely fell in love with the characters. Brooke and Miles had amazing chemistry. I loved how even though Miles knew his best friend (Brooke's brother) wouldn't like them dating, he still went out of his way to help her. One scene specifically had me going AWWW. Brooke broke her heel at a party and Miles gets down on one knee to change her heels into slippers. That's not enough the best part! The next day a package arrives at Brooke's home and it's her heels FIXED 😍😩
Since this is the first book in a trilogy, Piper not only gives us only 1 smut scene (crying only a tad bit), but she also leaves us on a cliffhanger. Prepare yourself because I wasn't ready for the book to end when it did. Nonetheless, I feel this book ended perfectly because I believe if a book doesn't leave you wanting more, then its not a good book. I'm glad that wasn't the case with this book.
Thank you so much Piper Lawson and Valentine PR for sending me an ARC of this book. I can't wait to continue this series!
We are back in Kodiak country, more Denver Kodiak’s basketball, book one of a trilogy, and you guessed it, a cliff of an ending.
The setup for the story is not anything new, but the story itself is worth the read. Miles and Brooke go back; he is her brother's teammate and the subject of her college crush. She needs a plus one, and he is available, but will fake blend into real? Then there are the secrets….
I am looking forward to the next books, I need answers.
Thank you to the Author for the advanced copy; this is my voluntary review.
I really enjoyed this - it’s a quick, fun, fast-paced read. It is the first in the 𝘋𝘦𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘒𝘰𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘬𝘴 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴, and I can’t wait for more! Brooke has always had a little crush on her older brother’s hot teammate, Miles. When her sorority is having a reunion and she finds out one of her sisters is bringing her ex, she works up the courage to ask Miles to be her fake date. He decides they should take it one step further and he should be her fake boyfriend. I loved how the way their friendship and banter turned into more. There were a couple of times when I was frustrated with them, but I guess if everyone was perfect, things would be boring! Brooke is fierce and bold, but has a hard time protecting herself when it matters. Miles is loyal to a fault, the cutest dog dad, and has never been in a relationship other than this fake one. There is so much drama and it all kept me hooked and I am dying to find out what happens in the next book, 𝙃𝙖𝙧𝙙 𝙩𝙤 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚. This one left us on quite the cliffy! Okay so, curiosity killed the cat on this one. Generally, these sorts of books are standalones in an interconnected series, right? But no. Not this one. This whole series follows the SAME couple for 3 books.
But it's just a contemporary sports romance.
So I had to ask myself...is it really that deep? Is all of this necessary? Why do we need THREE books for these people to get together?
The answer is because these books aren't actually complete novels. At least, THIS one isn't. Have any of you seen that TikTok of the dude reading and someone expresses interest in the book so he just rips the goddamned thing in half and hands the part he's already read over to the viewer?
This story is like that. Like someone just shredded a book and handed me the front half.
The story's only part-way done. Literally the couple gets together and then shit starts to blow up around them, and then bam. Back cover.
WHY this couldn't have been combined into a single, longer novel, I don't know.
It's not that the story is bad - it's not. The characters are cute and have chemistry. The drama is doing it's thing. The spice was decent.
I could comment on a white author writing a black FMC and giving her ZERO black friends, her black senator mother making her pledge an otherwise all-white sorority because "it looks better and the people are super connected" and outside of having her admit once or twice that she's black, she could be ANY race because that's how few cultural cues are given to indicate it...but I won't. I'm sure others already have. I personally didn't think it was that deep - because these "friends" ... aren't her friends in the first place. And MAYBE, as this series progresses, we'll get a little added depth when the FMC realizes this. Fingers crossed.
Just...who writes books this way?
But hey, they're short and I'm not feeling well so this was an easy audiobook series to pick up and read while rotting on the couch waiting for the plague to either finish me off or grant me a reprieve.
So I'm irritated at the fact I had to buy 3 books to read ONE story, but not enough to stop reading. Do with this what you will.
Not bad but rated one due to the fact she lived off her mother for her whole life and couldn’t fathom or understand why she was cut off. Also ended on a cliffhanger
** This novel is NOT a standalone; it is the first novel in a series**
Piper Lawson does it again.
I fell in love with this author's writing when Instagram somehow caught wind of my algorithm and put her Wicked and Rivals series front and center.
This next series is a Brother's Best Friend, Friends-to-Lovers Basketball Romance. And for my first basketball romance, I could not have chosen better.
Hard to Fake Follows NBA star Miles and influencer (and senator's daughter) Brooke.
Brooke, as a senator's daughter, has always been in the spotlight, and is constantly "on." That is, until a picture she posted to her influencer account caused a flux in her mother's polling, and she was cut off from the very luxurious life she was used to living. Down on her luck, she learns that one of her sorority sisters is getting ready to launch her next clothing line and is looking for some influencers to help out. Brooke knows that she is just the one for the job, and all she has to do is convince her sorority sister, which she is planning to do at their annual weekend event. There is one problem:: one of her "rival" sorority sisters is bringing her ex, and Brooke can no longer show up alone. Enter Miles, Brother's best friend and longtime crush. They made a plan, it is only for the weekend and it is only fake... at least that's what they said... I love that Brooke not only knows her worth but is also willing to stand up for others who may not be strong enough to do it themselves.
Miles is a hottie, pro basketball player, and fierce protector. He has told himself that he was only going with Brooke to not only help her get the influencer account but to make sure her ex gets nowhere near her. What he doesn't expect is that all of the feelings he thought he hid away many years ago will resurface.
Here is the thing I love about a brother's best friend storyline, there is almost always an established relationship that we, as readers, get flashbacks of. Piper's development of both of these characters was believable, and I attribute that to the discussions that they have about their past. It also makes the "F" it moment" all the better because they both know the stakes should things go wrong. I loved the banter not only between the FMC and MMC but all of the characters. I think that the supporting characters are just as important as the MCs, and Piper does all of them justice. The spice and spicy, and in true Piper fashion, this novel ends on a cliffhanger.

“You wanted to disappear last night. So disappear with me, Princess.” — Rating: 4.75 stars Spice: 🌶️ — Two chapters in and i was already head over heels in love with Brooke & Miles. Brooke is THE girls’ girl and Miles is the poster boy hiding just how much he really cares behind his star athlete persona.
What starts off as fake dating to save face during a weekend retreat turns into an effortless bond that seems to have been simmering for years between these two characters👀
I love how self aware and unapologetic Brooke is, even when rocking the boat might mean losing an opportunity she desperately needs. And Miles? Well Miles made me squeal practically every. Single. Chapter. He’s attentive, protective & comforting. All that wrapped up in a 6’4 basketball player package 😩😍
“But she’s under my skin, in my head, and until this weekend, I was searching for a way to get her out. Now, I’m not sure I want to.” HOW COULD I NOT SQUEAL WHEN HE SAYS THINGS LIKE THAT!!
This indie romance novel is fast paced and short which makes it an amazing read for when you need a quick lift me up that’s well written and fleshed out so well!
It was hard not to love this book when there was pinkie holding, he takes off her heels & puts on her flats for her and a “f*!k this” moment but ✨ make it for comfort. ✨
I was expecting a bit more in terms of arcs and the Elise plot line but I didn’t want to dock a whole star for this as Brooke and Miles’ story continues for another two books! So I’m sure we’ll be getting all of that and more in the next two stories 🤭
Overall, if you like: 🏀 Basketball romance 🏀 Teammate’s sister 🏀 Fake dating 🏀 Very subtle “it’s always been you” vibes 🏀 There’s only one bed
Then this one is for you🥰 and if you love it as much as I did, you’ll be counting the days until book 2 releases to see what happens next!!
Thank you for trusting me with your work, Piper Lawson♥️
