Book 1 of 2 in my accidental sugar daddy double feature lol. I DNFed this at 11%… it seemed a little too uh sincere about the premise. He’s 18 and broke? No questions asked. Rich guy is super rich and heralded as a genius by the press? Probably totally normal, no questions asked.

I assume these things are addressed in some way later on in the book, but based on what I’ve read so far I don’t really trust the nuance and honestly the Pretty Woman concept has never been appealing to me on any level!

(You can imagine my laughter when I turned to my next KU book and realized it was book 2 of 2!)

This book was so cute and it hit all my favorites, as well as some I didn’t know I had. I love indie publishing because it spotlights books that are tougher sells in the trad world, like daddy kink and BDSM. I had no idea that I love daddy kink until this book. I thought it approached BDSM very sensitively, taking the small town innocent Ricky who’s never had exposure to that world and exploring all his kinky fantasies that he never knew he had.

“Provenance” is an age gap sugar daddy meet cute between Ricky, a college student majoring in engineering who works part time washing dishes at a restaurant. He meets Adam, a famous, wealthy artist on a smoke break, who gives him a big tip and his number after they literally stumble into each other.

Ricky can’t stop thinking about the handsome older man and gives in, texting him. Adam asks him to be his escort to a charity gala and one thing leads to another. Adam is soon bestowing lavish gifts like expensive clothing and spa trips on his young protege and Ricky finds he loves getting spoiled. He’s not so sure about the other elements of their new relationship though until he adorably finds out that kink is in fact quite common and not so weird… and he actually likes it.

I loved their relationship and them as a couple. Adam wasn’t a rude jerk which so many billionaire types are painted as, so that was refreshing. The class differences between them were sensitively handled. I found it hard to believe that even a celebrity artist could be that rich so soon but I was willing to suspend my disbelief on that element. I also was surprised that Adam was only 30ish. He acted more in his 40s or 50s. Though 30-year-olds do have back pain that could need surgery, but it’s not as common (speaking as a 42-year-old, here!)

I liked how it kept up the spice level with a nice variety in sex scenes and still maintained the character development. The arc of their relationship and the building of trust between them was lovely. Adam and Ricky were complex, interesting characters and not stereotypes.

I loved the scenes of Ricky liking the gift of the belt from Adam because it was like Adam was marking him, and then graduating to a gift of a collar and Ricky didn’t even realize he’d been newly collared as a sub. The naivete was charming. But Ricky wasn’t naive in his confidence. I also liked that he had a big family and close circle of friends and they were all colorful characters and important in his life. Enough of these 20-year-olds with dead parents.

I liked how even though he was 20ish, he wasn’t infantalized. There was a power dynamic there but I never felt like Adam was taking advantage of Ricky.

All in all I really loved this lovely, steamy book. It was a fresh take that I’d like to see more of. Now I’m on a mission to find more kinky books that portray BDSM in a positive, respectful light.

DNF@30% the first 20 pages were so good, the other 50 a train wreck that I will not partake with for the rest of it.

It had been phenomenal. And every time Ricky had looked for Adam, wanting to point something out, wanting to talk to him…well, Adam was already looking at Ricky. Every time.

This was a very delightful surprise, and this book deserves so much more hype! The tropes in this book were some of my favorites: opposites attract, age gap, class difference + it had lite BDSM and sugar daddy which I haven't read in a while. I loved Ricky, he was so charismatic and I loved how go-with-the-flow he was. He was immediately taken by Adam and was more interested in getting to know him as a person rather than for Adam's money. I liked how even though Adam was closed off, you could tell what kind of person he was by the way he spoke about art and how much he wanted to spoil Ricky. I thought their communication in regards to their physical intimacy was well written, BDSM relationships can be hit or miss with me, and even though this was pretty lowkey it was a hit for me.

I wish this book had been longer (this is my official request to the author for a sequel), I feel like Ricky and Adam just got solid together and then the book ended. They were very cute together though, and I liked how they took care of each other in different ways.

Amazing dynamic!

I considered docking a star for editing (there are several typos, including “taught” instead of “taut” more than once), but ultimately I just really loved this book and the growth of the characters.
The story is told from the younger MC’s POV, and it starts off almost as a sugar daddy kind of arrangement, but soon they start dating in earnest. There’s some fantastic kink, and they also learn to communicate and get past some barriers. It kind of had RJ Moray His Boy Next Door vibes to me (which is a huge compliment). Loved it!

I really enjoyed this. Like really really really enjoyed it. Such an easy read too. I have no words. I enjoyed this so freaking much. I can already feel the book hangover and I literally finished this book like 10 minutes ago.

Edit: I’m rereading some of my favorite parts, cause I just can’t get this book out of my head. I absolutely love how S Matthews wrote sub-drop. I mention this in my notes, but wanted to write it in my review too. More often than not, many authors write drop like a panic attack, which can definitely happen but in my experience, is somewhat uncommon. Typically, I’ve experienced dropping more like how they depicted it, where Ricky was worried about ‘something’, “a tiny bit nauseous, a tiny bit itchy”. I loved this. It made me really feel like the author did a whole lot of extensive research or is actually a part of the lifestyle and has first hand experience. And the way Adam helped Ricky feel better? Perfection.

Also, the part where Ricky is roaming through Adam’s apartment and goes into his room to see his medication bottles and glasses and stuff, and rather than hiding that he did that or lying to Adam or whatever, he just outright asked him if Adam’s okay or if Ricky needs to be worried. This was so refreshing and just nice to experience honestly. Again, a lot of authors rely hugely on miscommunication or lies of omission, and the fact that they didn’t do either in this book is sooooo nice for me. Obviously there were some instances of miscommunication or hiding something, but these instances were resolved very quickly and the story and character development made a whole lot of sense regarding the ‘hiding’.

Also also, I absolutely LOVE how these sex scenes are written. They’re not over the top, they’re not porn-y, they’re not excessive. Perfect. I love this book so much lmao

Well written (though I can always do without present-tense narration), with appealing MCs, hot sex, and a decent reason for the failure to communicate.

This was heading for 4.5 stars (I had a couple of quibbles about Adam's career) right up until I hit the epilogue, when it was five years later, Ricky was wearing an engagement ring, and they wound up having a small, tasteful wedding ... in Bora Bora. It was like being yanked into a Gay Issue of Brides magazine. (Does Brides even still exist in hard copy?) I don't object to queer people getting married! I am a queer person who is married! But JFC, the happy ending has already happened: the MCs are in love, their relationship is harmonious, they're looking at permanence. I don't need or want a wedding tacked on as if the MCs' love for each other were incomplete without it. Also, destination weddings offend me even if one of the grooms is rich enough to cover everybody's airfare.

I really loved this book!

I'd give this 4.5 stars. It's written very well, and there are only a few minor errors. It did take me a minute to get used to the third-person, present tense, which is pretty rare, but once I acclimated, I really enjoyed this author's writing style. The only thing that threw me a bit was that the main characters are American (unless I missed something) and it's set in New York, but the dialect leans toward European phrasing? And I don't just mean spelling, but actual dialect.

This book isn't especially deep or angsty, but there's just something about it that resonated with me and pulled a lot of emotions to the surface. Adam and Nicky are precious. I found myself wanting to reread it immediately. And I'm writing this review the next day and have found myself thinking about it off and on all day. So, yeah....I definitely recommend it, and I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Sweet Love and Healing

This was a beautiful story. I interpreted the blurb as an escort to boyfriend type of situation but it wasn’t that at all. It was the story of a hurt man who was trying to have a relationship but wasn’t sure how to go about it. It was a sweet stumbling relationship in which Adam tried to protect Ricky from repeating his previous experiences. It was about love and support and healing. There was some mild BDSM. I thought it was medium spice. It definitely is not a smutty daddy book so look elsewhere for that.

I enjoyed this book because of the nice character development and would read more by this author. I think the author took something that I would not usually enjoy, sugar daddy with kink, and humanized it. I didn’t care for the epilogue due to conspicuous consumption.

Excellent

What a beautiful book. So well written. The style .... I hate to say pretty. But I keep finding the words so damn pretty. In a very masculine romantic way, of course!
