From cities at Eastern Europe’s crossroads of empires to an inn an the Borgo Pass in the Carpathian Mountains — journey with author Raffael Coronelli ( How to Have an Adventure in Scotland ) to a land synonymous with mystery and adventure at Europe’s frontier. Ensconced tradition, dark history, and vampiric legends await.
Raffael Coronelli is a Chicago-based world adventurer and writer. His works include the How to Have an Adventure in… travel book series, several novels, and essays for Anime News Network and blu-ray releases from Arrow Video.
Another outstanding travelogue by Raffael. This entry in particular may just be his best yet. Full of history and culture.
Transylvania is a land that has had a few good travel books associated with it but they are usually hyper focused on the Dracula legend and are VERY dated. Raffael explores a modern Romania and tackles the past from a deeper lens than juust Dracula. Rest assured the count has plenty of appearances but it isn't the sole focus and the book is all the better for it.
An essential book for anyone interested in exploring a land most of us only know from pop culture.
Equal parts storytelling and informative you'll not find a better preview of your own adventure abroad. The most engaging aspect of these "How to have an Adventure" books is the careful linkage between information and the very raw experience of a person traveling from location to location with all the careful sensory information being conveyed in concise, well formed prose. Highly recommended whether you're taking a trip yourself or merely interested in the region.
Think a gentler Bill Bryson - what does an outsider see as quirky about the people and places he has chosen to live amongst? Coronelli writes well about his lifestyle and neighbours in this rural Transylvanian community. We read it as we embarked on our week of Transylvanian travels, enhancing our pleasure by doing so, and cheering when we spotted it prominently displayed in a bookshop inside one of the heritage fortified churches.
